ABOUT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY SETTLEMENT HOUSENorthwestern University Settlement House’s (“Northwestern Settlement”) mission is to Nurture, Educate, and Inspire children and families in need, so they can take responsibility and attain self-sufficiency.Northwestern Settlement is a dynamic and innovative leader in creating transformational opportunities for children and families to disrupt generational poverty. Northwestern Settlement operates under the firm belief that the succeeding generation should be better educated, more financially secure and empowered to set and reach aspirational goals.

Founded in 1891 by leaders of Northwestern University, Northwestern Settlement operates as a separate and financially independent institution, predominantly serving disenfranchised immigrants in a neighborhood – West Town – that failed to register in Chicago’s collective conscience. Although the methods of service have changed, Northwestern Settlement continues to provide transformational opportunities to those who need them the most.

With an annual operating budget of $20 million, Northwestern Settlement serves more than 6,500 people each year through eight core social service programs. Each program provides a unique and valuable contribution to the Settlement’s mission:

• Rowe Elementary School (“Rowe”) is a K-8 CPS charter grammar school campus grounded in intensive research and national best practices. Rowe delivers rigorous academic instruction and provides social and emotional support to its more than 1,000 scholars across two campuses. Rowe’s goal is to cultivate the expectation and desire to graduate from college, while defining and embodying the values of pride, success, and honor.

• House In The Wood, located in Delavan, Wisconsin, delivers Summer Camp, year-round Outdoor Education and Leader-In-Training programs in a safe and natural environment removed from urban life, introducing adult role models who counsel and exemplify Northwestern Settlement’s values and creating a positive atmosphere in which underserved youth can be themselves.

• Food Pantry and Support Services has provided sustenance and emergency services to residents of the West Town community since 1933, serving over 3,500 neighbors in 2020.

• Family CARES Center offers bilingual on-site mental health counseling and family wellness services to members of the Northwestern Settlement community, in partnership with Children’s Home & Aid.

• Adventure Stage Chicago (“ASC”), Chicago’s leading children’s theater, creates and tells heroic stories about and for young people, engaging the community and inspiring all to be heroes in their own lives. delivers a high-quality theatre experience while integrating artistic practice into the fabric and delivery of social services.

• The After School Program, housed in both Rowe Elementary School and Northwestern Settlement, offers school readiness and recreational activities for children ages 5 to 12 in a safe environment before and after the school day.

• AmeriCorps Project YES! members and volunteers educate, nurture and inspire students in their schools and reach out to serve the community at large.

• Early Childhood Education is a Head Start program that provides families with year-round programming for children ages 2-5, both in-home and at Northwestern Settlement House. The program integrates responsive care into a research-based curriculum known as the “Creative Curriculum,” which is aimed at developing a wide variety of skills.

With the search for a new President & CEO (“CEO”), Northwestern Settlement is at an important and exciting inflection point. This is a remarkable opportunity for a visionary leader to invigorate the landscape of services and opportunities provided to children and families in need. The CEO will provide leadership and direction to fulfill Northwestern Settlement’s mission, amplifying its profile in the community it serves.

Collaborating with the Board and Senior Management Team, the CEO will lead the organization to achieve and surpass fundraising, cash flow and business goals and objectives. This is an exceptional opportunity for a fundraising leader to accelerate Northwestern Settlement’s impact, partnerships and portfolio growth, and to diversify fundraising streams. This leader will spearhead the development, communication and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes. The CEO will work to inspire engagement externally among Northwestern Settlement’s donors, partners and constituents.

Reporting to and working closely with the Board of Directors, the CEO will provide strategic leadership to refine Northwestern Settlement’s vision and strategies in ways that both build upon its history and expertise and positions the organization to meet the future needs of the social sector.

Inspired by a genuine passion for serving children and families and the Northwestern Settlement mission, the CEO will embody Northwestern Settlement’s strong commitment to its work and will promote the organization, accelerating its impact, resource development and program excellence. The role provides leadership and oversight of the organization’s operations, culture, values, talent and financial performance.

The CEO will be a highly visible member of the community, representing Northwestern Settlement among peer social service organizations, civic leaders and other key stakeholders throughout Chicagoland and beyond.

The CEO will have experience working with diverse client and employee populations. This empathic leader will have a deep understanding of issues of equity, diversity and inclusion, and will foster these ideas in the management of staff and the work of the organization. This person will be responsive to the needs of the community served by Northwestern Settlement and will be respectful and mindful of the unique cultures represented among those families.

The CEO will have the character and confidence to work comfortably in a highly visible role and to work effectively with a broad range of constituents, both within Northwestern Settlement and externally. The CEO will be a strong and decisive leader, making decisions on a factual/analytical basis with fair consideration of other’s views.

An empathic, confident leader, the CEO will embrace the history and culture of Northwestern Settlement, which is integral to gaining credibility with the staff and community. This leader will partner with staff, innovating to help expand the organization’s brand and reach. They will have a collaborative spirit and a sense of humor. They will lead by example, understanding that, at times, empathy is an essential quality. The CEO will have an eye consistently focused on the future and how to best adapt the organization to its changing environment. The CEO will be an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics and values; someone who can be trusted without reservation. On the most fundamental level, the CEO will look for ways to enrich, empower and educate youth, families and communities.

Business Acumen, Operational and Change Management

The CEO will be a confident leader with a track record of success in organizational management, including deep managerial and operational expertise with a deftness to guide an organization to maximize opportunities. This leader will bring experience retaining, building and leading teams of the highest degree of professionalism and guiding team members’ growth and development. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop a robust partnership with the Board and ensure fiduciary responsibility, sound financial management practices and accountability while remaining creative and innovative. The CEO will be a catalyst for the organization, implementing best practices for nonprofit management and ensuring that overall day-to-day operations are aligned with strategic goals. This leader will bring a high level of intellectual horsepower and a curious, collaborative and creative mindset. The CEO will have a vision for the social services and educational landscape and will understand the importance of technological infrastructure as well as effective operational and financial administration in the management of an organization. Fundamentally, this leader will be capable of pulling the strategic levers to drive the organization with the right focus in the right areas.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

A Fundraiser for Northwestern Settlement

The CEO will have a demonstrated ability in building transformational relationships for sustainable revenue, relevance and impact. A highly adept and fluent communicator, the CEO will steward the highest-level corporate and foundation executives, high-net worth individuals and key influencers. This leader will have familiarity with a wide range of fundraising channels, including individual giving, corporate and foundation support. Experienced in building and sustaining relationships with diverse stakeholders in the social services ecosystem, the CEO will bring deep fundraising experience to the role. The CEO will leverage thought leadership, marketing and communication assets and channels that can drive sustainable revenue and relevance for Northwestern Settlement. As an external voice of the organization, this leader will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and must be a confident public speaker. This leader will be able to work effectively with diverse populations and will be credible in the community.

An Ambassador & Relationship Builder

The CEO will be a high-energy, charismatic leader who will serve as an ‘Ambassador’ for Northwestern Settlement. The CEO will have an executive and mission-driven presence. They will be able to effectively articulate and convey Northwestern Settlement’s mission and priorities to a range of constituents including donors, partner organizations, public officials and the communities and families that Northwestern Settlement serves. The CEO will also have the capacity to build and sustain excellent relationships at multiple levels internally with the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers. The CEO will be a proactive, transparent and persuasive communicator who can deal effectively with people of different philosophies, backgrounds and cultures. The CEO will be inclusive, allowing for the building of consensus and recognition of teamwork. It is imperative that the CEO fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and partnership across the organization. The CEO will understand the need to learn the history and culture of Northwestern Settlement and appreciate the complexities it faces. Charged with helping the organization continue to diversify its talent while also developing a robust, dynamic and inclusive culture, the CEO will work to nurture a transparent and compassionate culture.
