Diabetes spending could reach$US396 billion by 2025

The economic effect of diabetes mellitus in countrieswith a high incidence of the disease could be higher thanthat of the AIDS pandemic, warn diabetes experts,reports the New Zealand Herald.

A report released at the International DiabetesFederation conference, held in August in Paris, estimatesthat > 300 million individuals worldwide are at high riskof developing diabetes. For individuals aged 20–79years, the worldwide healthcare cost of diabetes is ≥$US153 billion annually, the report says. However, ifpredictions are correct that the number of individualswith diabetes will increase from 194 million to 333million by 2025, total direct healthcare spending on thedisease worldwide will be $US213 billion–$US396billion, the report states.New Zealand Herald.
