PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 428 - 6 Sep 2003 Diabetes spending could reach $US396 billion by 2025 The economic effect of diabetes mellitus in countries with a high incidence of the disease could be higher than that of the AIDS pandemic, warn diabetes experts, reports the New Zealand Herald. A report released at the International Diabetes Federation conference, held in August in Paris, estimates that > 300 million individuals worldwide are at high risk of developing diabetes. For individuals aged 20–79 years, the worldwide healthcare cost of diabetes is $US153 billion annually, the report says. However, if predictions are correct that the number of individuals with diabetes will increase from 194 million to 333 million by 2025, total direct healthcare spending on the disease worldwide will be $US213 billion–$US396 billion, the report states.
