SILESIAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SPIE STUDENT CHAPTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015
INTRODUCTION The Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter was created in August 2005 at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Institute of Physics, Department of Optoelectronics at the initiative of prof. Tadeusz Pustelny, and Ph.D Kamil Barczak. The chapter members are Ph.D. students from the Institute of Physics, as well as students of Electronics and Telecommunication from Electrical Engineering faculty at Silesian University of Technology. Currently Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter is localized in The Department of Optoelectronics under the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES The activities and tasks of Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter are mainly focused on these topics:
Popularization of photonics science in the local community The aim is to increase interest in science and encourage young people to study optoelectronics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology.
Developing the competence of Chapter members in the field of optoelectronics and provide possibility for knowledge exchange, as well as develop personal relations with members of other chapters/institutions – this goal is realized by taking active part in various chapters meetings and conferences.
These goals were realized in 2015 through the following activities:
The Opto-Meeting for Young Researchers & 10th Anniversary
International SPIE Students Chapter Meeting Wrocław 27-30th May 2015
Conference was organized in Department of Experimental Physics of Wrocław University of Technology. Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter with other SPIE Chapters from Poland has supported organization of Opto-Meeting. This is the annual conference to share own scientific and personal development and experience gained in optics and physics research. Conference is international and very popular for young scientist from Europe. In each edition of the conference, several foreign speakers are invited to make very interesting lectures for young researchers. Main topics of conference include, e.g.: sensors, quantum optics, optoelectronics, imaging techniques, biomedical optics, optical modeling and simulations, fiber optics, optical communication. Our chapter was represented by six people, and following topics were presented:

Eco-Responsible workshops
Members from the Silesian University of Technology SPIE student chapter organized special workshops on eco-responsible science, people behavior, casual life and bussines. Aim of the workshops was to increase interest in science and encourage young people to live in an ecologic way. We presented alternative sources of energy, e.g. PV panels, hydrogen cells, etc. Mainly high school students and undergraduates were participating in this event. During this event participants were introduced to optics and optoelectronics laboratory equipment containing various interactive stands of alternative energy sources.

Energy Days
The aim of Energy Days was to increase interest and knowledge in renewable power sources and photovoltaics. Main visitors of these workshops were young people and ungraduated students interested in presented topics. Our SPIE Chapter presented many modern technological solutions for alternative and environmentally friendly energy sources. We explained working principles of the photovoltaic and hydrogen cells, concepts and solutions for building private solar power plants. The youngest participants of this event mostly enjoyed bright light emitting diode powered by lemon power station and small toys powered by PV cells.

This event lasted two days. The first day of workshops was held in the convention center in Katowice, the second day was held in the city center of Katowice. Overall over a thousand of visitors have enjoyed our workshops.
Optics + Photonics, 8th - 13th August 2015, San Diego, California, USA Our member, Piotr Kałużyński, took active part in Optics + Photonics conference 8-13th August 2015 in San Diego California thanks to Travel Grant award. This meeting was beneficial in case of exploring new cooperation possibilities with other chapters, exchanging experiences with SPIE members around the World and exploring another cultures.

Student Chapter activities
Personal time management workshops in Warsaw 2015 A the end of November 2015 Silesian University of Technology SPIE Chapter took active part in personal time management workshops organized by Warsaw SPIE Chapter in cooperation with SPIE Chapters from Poland. This workshop was very beneficial for our members, because we had opportunity to develop personally in the management of time and planned tasks, e.g. organization of scientific conference, distributing tasks within the Chapter, and many other challenges which we are experiencing every day at our Chapter and University.

Optics Workshops for high school students and younger people The aim of Optics Workshops was to increase interest in optics and physics science and encourage young people to study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology. Members from our Silesian University of Technology SPIE student chapter organized workshops for high school students and undergraduates. We presented basic optical phenomena, e.g. waveguide workshops, where participants were making their own model of the fiber optic illuminator based on LED, transparent tube and USG gel. We also show how LED work in different temperatures changing color of emitted light (changes in energy gap), and many more phenomena in optics and optoelectronics. These workshops were great success for our SPIE Chapter.

Scheduled activities in 2016 Participation of The Silesian University of Technology SPIE Chapter representative in the
forthcoming SPIE Optics + Photonics conference in San Diego 2016,
Participation in the Science Picnic of National Polish Radio held in Warsaw – about 100 000 participants,
Participation in Silesian voivodeship (mainly in Katowice & Gliwice) science events - 1000÷2000 participants,
Organizing Khet 2.0 tournament for students, Educational initiatives:
- demonstrations of physics and optoelectronics for students and undergraduates, - demonstration for High School students of various optical phenomena in the
laboratories of Department of Optoelectronics.
