2 | BON SECOURS HOSPITAL

WELCOME to the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee where, for over 90 years, our team of dedicated staff has been serving the people of County Kerry. During that time it has commanded a well-earned and enviable reputation for offering the highest standards in patient care, delivered with the utmost compassion.

We’ve had a busy year at the Bon Secours during which there have been many highlights. The most recent came in October 2013 when the Bishop of Kerry, Most Reverend Raymond Browne, blessed the magnificent Josephine Potel extension, the first of a two-phase €7 million development at the hospital.

2013 started on the right note when we became the first Bon Secours Hospital to be represented at the Irish Healthcare Centre awards, being nominated as one of the top five hospitals in the country.

In May we announced that the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus will be the new beneficiary of the Hospital’s Community Fund for the next three years. The Health Link Bus fulfils one of the main aims of the Bon Secours Health System which is to provide good help to those in need.

In June, we opened a new Consultation Centre in the heart of Limerick City to serve the medical needs of people in Limerick and the Midwest Region. We have noticed an increase in the number of people travelling great distances from

Limerick, Clare, north Cork and Tipperary for a consultation in Tralee. Our new Consultation Centre in Limerick will help to reduce the stress for existing and new referrals.

Following a very successful recruitment campaign towards the end of 2012, we welcomed four new Consultants to the hospital in Tralee to work in a number of areas covering Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Paediatrics and Cardiology. We aim to further strengthen our team of dedicated professionals in 2014.

We hope you enjoy this brief insight to the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee and we look forward to continuing to meet the varying healthcare needs of our patients into the future.

BRANCHING OUT IN TRALEE

IN October 2013, in the presence of Fr Seamus Linnane, Hospital Manager, staff and Sisters, the Bishop of Kerry, Most Reverend Raymond Browne, blessed the magnificent Josephine Potel extension, the first of a two-phase €7 million development at the hospital.

Bishop Browne said that it would have been a proud day for his late mother, had she been alive, to see him blessing a Bon Secours building, as he had two grand-aunts who entered the order of the Bon Secours Sisters. He blessed all who will work in this building and to keep their faith alive in their hearts and in their work.

This has been an exciting project for everyone involved in the day-to-day running of the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee. The need to expand has arisen over a number of years and this new development will result in the provision of additional space for the hospital’s clinical

outpatient departments. Great credit is due to the design and construction team who worked tirelessly to complete this phase of the project on schedule.

Construction work on the new Administration and Storage building, 125 additional car park spaces and a new vehicle entrance from Matt Talbot Road began in February 2013 and it provided jobs for 50 people.

The Josephine Potel extension will be the new home to the Administration, Finance, Supplies, Laundry and Medical Records Departments at the hospital and prayers were said for each during the blessing ceremony.

A CARING FORCE WITHIN THE COMMUNITy

One of the main aims of the Bon Secours Health System is to provide good help to those in need and each year the Hospital identifies and supports a number of beneficiaries who, for various reasons, meet that criteria.

In 2013, the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus was selected to become the new beneficiary of the Hospital’s Community Fund for three years until 2015. The three annual contributions of €30,000 thereby strengthened the capability of the Kerry Cancer Trust purchase a new bus which was delivered in September.

In 2012, the Health Link Bus provided free transport for cancer patients from Kerry to attend 3600 appointments for radiotherapy at Cork University Hospital. The bus takes patients from one of the pick-up points en route to Cork and brings them to the hospital for treatment, waits while all patients on board are treated and then brings them back to where they were picked up.

There were many other beneficiaries of the Community Fund in 2012 & 2013, and among them were:

• Tralee Musical Society, a community-driven organisation that is dedicated to touching people’s lives with enjoyment.

• Tralee Dynamos FC who, for many years, have worked closely with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and have used sport as a means to instil a sense of pride, team play and community spirit.

• Daffodil Day Cake Sale raised €5000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

• Kerins O’Rahillys CLG who provided our staff with parking facilities for most of the year.

At the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee we are committed to recognising the need to engage with the local communities and we are lucky that our organisation has always had an annual fund dedicated to community initiatives.
