hope you enjoy this year’s Annual Report, which summarizes some of Augusta Prep’s great achieve-ments of the past year while also recognizing our

all-important partners as we venture forward into our 52nd year of successfully preparing students forexcellence.

With the help of the Annual Fund and individual donor and volunteer support in the past year, we have seen some exciting developments at Augusta Prep that have led into the start of this school year. Because of your generosity, we accomplished great things for the students. There was cutting-edge web conferencing that will provide distance learning options to students and teachers; the successful and well-attended ArtsFest focused funds on performing and studio arts; our first Community Service Day engaged our students in meaningful ways of giving back on and off campus; the Cavalier Stadium lights shone for the first time; and a Mac Lab excites Lower School students andintroduces them to this modern educational tool.

None of these programs that have touched all students throughout the school would be possible without the annual gifts that make our work here possible. I wish to thank you for your loyal and generous support of the 2011-2012 Annual Fund and for being a KeyConnection in every way. Through the year, we have also been envisioning Augusta Prep’s future and the programmatic advancements that will keep our future

a bright one.Our Strategic Vision calls for a strong commitment to our students and to providing the 21st century skills they will need tonavigate the world theyenter. As always, weinspire them to Prepare for Excellence. Our newmission speaks to a broader Augusta Prep education that incorporates excellence in academics, arts, athletics, community involvement, and in using the tools of technology.Again, your support makes that aim possible, and I look for-ward to continuing our work together as Augusta Prep moves ever forward in improving the lives of its students and thereby enhancing the world in which we live.

reetings Augusta Prep Family and Friends,

The past year at Augusta Prep has been one of much excitement as we have seen the implementation of new technological advancements and other additions that further enhance our programs, outreach efforts within our community that tell the story of the heart and character of our school, and a new mission statement that embodies our message of diversity in a college-preparatory, non-sectarian setting.

Augusta Prep is now in its 52nd year – an accomplishment of much hard work that paved the road to success for an institution focused on the greater good of preparing tomorrow’s leaders for the betterment of our region, our state, our nation, and our world. To that end, your support as a member of the Augusta Prep community has been vital and greatly appreciated as you have helped us build the foundation to Prepare for Excellence in all ways. This past year, we continued our path in a tradition of excellence through our highly-qualified faculty and top-notch programming that assures the development of our students’ academic, athletic, and artistic interests while also further strengthening their character.

This truly is a wonderful time to be a part of Augusta Prep, an institution unique for its non-sectarian foundation, which embraces the diversity that makes our community a great one in which to live, work, and volunteer. Your

contribution to furthering the role that Augusta Prep plays in attracting, retaining, and preparing a talented workforce for this area does not go without notice. I thank all those whose names appear on the following pages. It is your support of the Annual Fund, Endowment, the Georgia GOAL Scholarship program, and the Golf Classic that provides the strength so vitally necessary to sustain our mission. Your gifts serve to foster the immense benefits of an Augusta Prep education, and that generosity is a wonderful lesson for our children to learn from and emulate. Thank you again for your financial support and for all the ways in which you contribute to Augusta Prep.

With Gratitude,

Clayton Boardman III ’77President, Board of Trustees

It is with great privilege that we announce and celebrate with you the outstanding success of the 2011-2012 Annual Fund. The Augusta Prep school family exhibits an amazing heart of generosity and support for which we are grateful.

The following list of donors demonstrates the commitment within this community to equip Prep students with the skills they need for today, tomorrow, and beyond. Thank you for being a Key Connection this past year and for all you do for Augusta Prep!

This report includes gifts received during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2011 and ending June 30, 2012. Every effort has been made to ensure information is correct. In the preparation of such reports, however, errors occasionally occur despite our best efforts. If you have questions, please contact Director of Development Pam Weinberger at (706) 863-1906 ext. 203 or [email protected].

Our Key Donors 2011-2012

n the 2011-2012 school year, we asked our community to become Key Connections in the ways of giving,

and there was much success in that effort with the Annual Fund making funding possible for several technology upgrades as well as campus beautification efforts, and faculty and staff professional devel-opment to attend Advanced Placement conferences in Art, Math, and Biologyalong with SAIS, CASE, and NAIS 21st century learning conferences and work-shops.This year, we are issuing a new call to become a Prep Pillar - Upholding our Tradition to Prepare for Excellence by playing your part in this year’s Annual Fund. Throughout this publication you’ll see the ways in which we have prepared in the past year to lead Augusta Prep toward excellence in the four key areas shown at right.

ugusta Prep’s 2nd graders were amazed the first time they eyed the 22 iMacs in the new Lower

School Mac Lab.The advancement is one that was added just prior to this school year, and it is among several technology advance-ments that have been made possible, in part, due to Annual Fund contributions this past year. The Mac lab was funded by way of a Prep family donation, acontribution from Augusta Prep’s Par-ent League, and Augusta Prep’s tech-nology budget, which is assisted with Annual Fund dollars. The Mac Lab is a big upgrade from what the Lower School previously had in its computer lab – 18 PC netbooks. Along with the new iMacs, there is also the addition of a new Mac laptop for a teacher, who can access any of the lab’s iMacs at any time from her laptop and even send messages to students that way. The iMac combines the display, processor, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive, memory, and more all in one simple enclosure for what Apple calls an “all-in-one desktop computer.”Beyond that, new PCs were installed in

the Jackie and Dale Phelon Technology Center at the start of the school year and new high-definition video conferencing equipment was added in the Upper School, setting the stage for some specialty class offerings next school year. The equipment includes two 70-inch monitors, a camera that points toward class partici-pants, microphones that hang from the classroom’s ceiling, and a touch-screen re-mote. The idea is to offer specialty classes that are a combination of other Malone Scholars schools throughout the nation. It was in 2008 that Augusta Prep was selected as a Malone Scholars school, making it today one of only 49 schools in the country and the only school in Georgia designated as such. Augusta Prep also has been workingrecently on a bandwidth upgradeproject, which will aid in academics by allowing faster Internet connections for computer labs. Many faculty also received new flat screen monitors.

ugusta Prep’s athletic program was placed in the spotlight – literally - at the start of this school year.

The lights, a capital project for the school, were installed around Cavalier Stadium prior to this school year to allow a limited number of Friday night home football games to

be played for the first time in Augusta Prep’s history. The lights also will be used in the future for some soccer and track events. The night football games – which included homecoming festivities – drew large crowds of Cavalier fans who came out to celebrate the

historic move for the athletic program. With the support of the Athletic Booster Club, a new scoreboard was also added for the field

this past summer.Augusta Prep took the opportunity to invite the nearby Springlakes neighborhood to the first night football game by offering free tickets. Several residents accepted the offer, and Augusta Prep received media coverage. Many of those attending the home games brought their own lawn chairs as bleacher seating remains limited. A fundraising effort that continues is the “Get in the Game” campaign to provide funding for the construction of a stadium at the school’s athletic field. The stadium project is designed to provide an essential resource to Augusta Prep’s athletic program while providing a re-energized feeling on campus and an increased sense of pride for all Cavaliers. For more information on that campaign, contact Director of Development Pam Weinberger at [email protected] or 706-863-1906 ext. 203.

he community was once again welcomed in to Augusta Prep for the school’s annual ArtsFest

event, which took place on Saturday, April 28.Families enjoyed food, fun crafts, and a silent auction. The event is one that has evolved through the years, but the theme has remained the same: to showcase the talent at Augusta Prep and in the CSRA while raising money for Augusta Prep’s Fine Arts Department. This year’s event raised enough funds to provide a new comput-er for use in an art room, an upgrade to the Lower School Kiln with a safety venting system, and assistance to the Conservatory. Inaddition to ArtsFest, there also wereseveral theatrical performances this past year that were offered to the generalpublic. Little Shop of Horrors was the

first time Augusta Prep had an all-student band play alongside Musical DirectorMichael Ray. “A big reason for choosing this show was the technical aspects,” said Augusta Prep’s Director of Theatre, Jamie McAteer. “We had a fired-up tech crew led by a very special senior that designed the lights as well as the huge man-eating plant this show requires.”A Midsummer Night’s Dream was the first Shakespearian show that McAteer had put on Augusta Prep’s stage. The show, led by a group of seniors, marked a new begin-ning and growth of the school’s theatreprogram because the cast was filled with mostly underclassmen.“It was extremely exciting to have a large group of young performers not only act in their first big acting role but for it to be a Shakespearean role,” McAteer said. Aladdin was a production of the Middle School, with many 7th and 8th graders taking lead roles. Technical tasks for this presentation involved a flying magic carpet as well as a Genie popping in from thin air. Finally, Into the Woods was offered as a mix of storyland characters.

Planting the SeedOf Service in the Community

ugusta Prep offered a helping hand this past year to its surrounding community,

and this time it added a new arm of outreach. The school held the inaugural Service Day on March 26, with Augusta Prep students, teach-ers, and administrators grabbing rakes and shovels as they worked on beautification and volunteer projects at their Martinez campus and in the community.Lower and Middle School pupils raked, mulched, and added stepping stones to a playground on Prep’s campus. Upper School students took on volunteer projects at Goodwill Industries, CSRA Happy Tails Rescue Inc., and at 15-20 other community organizations.Head of School Becky Gilmore said it was a great way to show that Augusta Prep cares for its surrounding community and that the school plans to continue the effort annually. In addition to Service Day, Maggie McLeod (’12) and Amanda Murphy (’13) organized a February 25 Natalee Holloway 5K event that raised nearly $8,000 for the Natalee Holloway Resource Center, which assists famlies and raises awareness among teens about the dangers of international travel. Lower School students and those “In the Middle” also raised more than $7,500 in the annual Jump Rope for Heart benefit for the American Heart Association.

Those Who Prepare While we Prepare for Excellence, we know a crucial component to the success of Augusta Prep and its students is our faculty. The followingprofiles demonstrate just how talented anddedicated Augusta Prep’s teachers are.

Years at Augusta Prep: 8

Degrees: BS Business Administration (Samford University); MBA (Georgia State University); MTS, Master of Theological Studies, (Candler School of Theology, Emory University)

What you enjoy most about teaching at Augusta Prep: The “Traveling through History” course which culminates in an overseas educational tour (France & England, China)

Teaching philosophy: Like my approach to teaching, my teaching philosophy always has room for improvement. It is a work in progress. I am a life-long learner, and I want my students to become life-long learners, too. The courses I teach--World History, World Religions, Psychology--are fascinating. My goal is to introduce these subjects that help explain who we are, how we got here, why we do the things we do, and where we are going. If I can generate some excitement in the students to learn, to read, and to grow, then I will have accomplished much.

Science Center; accepted to partici-pate in NASA’s Zero-G flight program; selected to participate in a leadership program at USC Aiken; has 31 hours over her masters degree; and presently searching for a doctoral program.

What you enjoy most about teaching at Augusta Prep: After teaching in the public school system for 14 years, it is wonderful to be at a school that allows teachers to teach, to work with students who care about their work, and to work with parents that care about their child’s education.

Teaching Philosophy:I believe all students’ learning levels in-crease when they are accepted for who they are and instructed as to where they might be academically. I have learned that effective learning requires collabo-ration between teacher, students, and

parents. This relationship should be built on respect and trust. When teaching Science, I believe that incorporating lectures, articles, videos, discussion of differ-ent theories, and hands-on labs is crucial to the student’s learning.

What you enjoy most about teach-ing at Augusta Prep: I love, love, love teaching at Prep because new ideas and teaching techniques are always being explored and encouraged. It’sinvigorating for a teacher to try new methods within her classroom and to see students thrive. This summer, the LS teachers read a book by Doug Lemov, Teach Like a Champion (49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College). Mrs. Burns hosted an evening at the end of the summer where we discussed many of these techniques. It reenforced some techniques that are mainstays in my classroom and empowered me to use some new methods. The ability tochallenge my class at a higher level is also one of my favorite things about Augusta Prep.

My teaching philosophy:I believe that in order to learn to their highest ability students must feel safe

and valued within their environment. I even remind my class often that we are like a family because we spend so much time together. In 1st grade, I strive to give each child a voice in a calm, happy environment. Our day begins with “Morning Meeting” time in which each child has a chance to share what’s on his or her mind. It is often very revealing and lets me know them more personally.I have always felt that students learn best by “doing,” so hands-on activities are the norm in 1st grade. This doesn’t always mean that the classroom is quiet, but it is so much fun for the students and the teacher!

One of the best compliments I have ever received was from a parent who told me her child cried on Saturday morning when she realized that it wasn’t a school day. Lastly, I strive to get students excited about the process of learning. I can easily model that excitement because I enjoy presenting the material and seeing

them begin to really grasp it. It’s been a huge blessing to see students at Augusta Prep get “turned on” to learning.

Our alumni also excel in many ways, as evidenced in the following profiles. Those Who Were Prepared

Current Profession: Labor Ana-lyst for Huron Consulting Group’s healthcare practice based out of Atlanta, GeorgiaDegree(s): BA in Public Policy, Vanderbilt UniversityFavorite faculty member while at Augusta Prep: I may sound like abrown-noser, but I found something to enjoy in every teacher’s class at Prep. Though my softspot for English and History made senior year classes with Mrs. Debbie Jones and Mr. Steve Boyd extra enjoyable.Favorite Augusta Prep memory: There are a lot of them. In middle school, Mr. Buckley’s class was the highlight of the day - especially if someone in the class made a gram-mar mistake and he jumped on their desk or, better yet, out the window. I loved my time on the cross country and swim teams. Our meets, trips, and practices were filled with a lot

of laughter. I’m very thankful Prep sports teams do not exclude anyone by holding tryouts. There is no way I’d ever have been on that cross country team if so!What you’ll cherish most about your time at Augusta Prep: My senior superlative was “Most In-volved.” At the time I thought that was a little lame. However, having the opportunity to be involved in so many things taught me how to work with others and begin to develop my leadership style. And we managed to make coordinating freshmen lock-ins and spirit week decorations a fun time. How Augusta Prep prepared you for the world and your profession: Prep teachers demand that students remain personally invested in their studies. Being an active participant in lectures and discussions was es-sential to performing well at Vander-bilt, and I’ve had to take initiative and carry responsibility early on in my job. I credit Augusta Prep with forming that habit.

Favorite faculty member while at Augusta Prep:Dr. Doug Williamson

Favorite Augusta Prep memory: My senior year at APDS, the Varsity Girls Track and Field team won their very first region title in School history under Coach Tom Holodak.

What you'll cherish most about your time at Augusta Prep: Augusta Prep instilled in me the importance of a support system. Regardless of where I am, I have found that the teachers and administrators of the school have supported and believed in me through everything that I have tried to achieve so far. Without their support, I know that I would not be where I am today.

How Augusta Prep prepared you for the world and your profession: For me, Augusta Prep was extremely challenging both academically and emotionally. However, this school prepared me to work hard, remain determined, and never give up. Though elementary in nature, these lessons have been carried through to my collegiate career as well as my professional life. I truly understand success does not come easy but through consistently striving for excellence in the face of adversity.

Eliot Flannery: From Prep Graduate to Prep Pillarliot Flannery, Class of 2000, has many fond memories of his time at Augusta Prep

– an experience that he says helped prepare him for the world and his career as a Senior Software DevelopmentEngineer at Microsoft.“In 1999 Augusta Prep did not have an Advanced Placement Computer Science class but because Augusta Prep has talented teachers and the flexibility to accommodate indi-vidual needs, I was able to be guided through an advanced independent study

course in logic and computer science that gave me a jump start on my stud-ies at Rice,” he said. “I am thankful that the students, as well as the teach-ers at Prep, come from diverse back-grounds; this helpedprepare me for work at a globalcompany where I work daily with people from different nations.”Flannery - who received his B.S. de-gree in Computer Science from Rice University - also cited Latin teacher Franklin Kennedy as a favorite, not-ing that “His wit and affability en-deared him to the entire student body.”He said he gives back to Prep today to

E support his alma mater’s mission.“I donate money to the Annual Fund every year because I want to ensure that Augusta Prep con-tinues to grow and because I trust that the money will be well spent. I want to ensure that there is always a school in Augusta thatnurtures a diverse student body and asks its students to embrace the world and all the opportunities in it.“I would encourage other alums to give back to Prep as well.”
