ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2009-10 3

Headmaster’s Message

Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family,

At the beginning of this past school year I suggested to the students a possible theme for the year - “Celebrate the Devon Experience.”

I chose this short phrase in order to highlight the realization that what Devon Prep provides to its students is much more than simply academic instruction imparted within the confines of four classroom walls. Instead, Devon is truly an experience. A myriad of wonderful things come together to create that experience which is known as Devon Prep.

For the past fifty-four years the greatest portion of the Devon experience has been provided by some very special people. First among them are our caring and inspiring teachers who guide their students in the quest for knowledge. This guidance is willingly received by enthusiastic students who not only savor the interaction with the faculty but also cherish the relationships they form with their peers during their Devon years. A host of athletic opportunities, field trips, and numerous activities further enhances the experience for the young men who attend our school.

In order for the Devon experience to be what the Piarist Fathers, faculty, and staff desire for our students, significant material support is essential. Since the tuition does not fully provide the necessary level of support, the Annual Appeal becomes instrumental in the continued success of our students. It is our generous benefactors who provide the resources we need to make the Devon experience something which we can truly celebrate. To each one of you I am profoundly grateful.

This Annual Report of Gifts 2009-10 highlights the kindness of our benefactors during the past year. At the same time it also serves to provide you with a glimpse of the Devon experience.

I invite you to read this report carefully. I also invite (and kindly request) that you then generously support the 2010-11 Annual Appeal. The value of your gift this year will be multiplied by the fact that in difficult economic times each dollar is even more needed.

As you may know from viewing your favorite website (www.devonprep.com), for the past year and a half we have been making capital improvements to the entrance areas of the school. These include a complete new appearance to the Valley Forge Road entrance as well as a dramatic improvement to the portal of the school. Through this portal pass our students on their way to celebrating the Devon experience. With your continued generosity that experience will be one which is truly life altering.

Thank you again and may God bless you and your loved ones at every moment of your lives!

Cordially,

Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. Headmaster

Gifts to Devon Prep can be made in a number of ways, including the following:

Devon Prep Annual Fund Gifts to the Annual Fund are the cornerstone of the School‟s development program. These gifts, from trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends, support the current operations of the school, providing additional resources to enrich the educational experiences of our students.

Capital Giving Gifts to the Capital Giving Fund allow us to meet the long-term goals identified in an internal assessment and in our strategic plan. These gifts funded the construction of Saint Anthony Hall and other campus improvements and will fund an endowment to provide for Devon‟s future needs. Please contact the Development Office to discuss a Capital Fund Gift.

Matching Gifts The easiest way to make your gift to Devon Prep grow is through matching gifts. Donors (or their spouses) employed by companies with matching gift programs can double or triple their contributions by designating Devon Preparatory School as the recipient of match-ing gifts.

United Way Devon Prep CYO is eligible to participate in the Donor Choice/Specific Care Program of the United Way. During the United Way‟s

annual campaign, donors may designate a gift to Devon Prep CYO on the Donor Choice pledge/designation form through Specific Care. Devon Prep CYO is classified as a “non-member agency,” and recorded as CYO/DEVON PREP, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636. The assigned identification number is consistent from year to year.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts Donors can further educational opportunities at Devon Prep by honoring or memorializing a special person or event. Acknowledgment of the gift is made directly to the family or desig-nated individual.

Gifts of Appreciated Property A gift of stock, real estate or other appreciated property can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax advantages to the donor. The full value of the securities is usually de-ductible, and you may avoid the capital gains tax on the profit.

Bequests Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to your will. You may wish to consid-er naming Devon Prep to receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning you can protect your family and also contribute to the financial security of Devon Prep. If you have already considered Devon Prep in your estate plans, please let us know, so that we may count you among the members of The Calasanctian Society.

Ways of Giving to Devon Prep

Gifts in Kind Devon Prep gratefully accepts gifts of sup-plies, books, and equipment. Tax deductions are available for firms and individuals contrib-uting gifts in kind to educational institutions.

Scholarship Gifts While unrestricted gifts to the Annual Giving Fund provide Devon Prep with operating funds to help maintain the quality of its academic programs, scholarship gifts enable the school to award scholarship aid to deserv-ing students. Scholarship gifts can be made to the General Scholarship Fund or to one of the named Scholarship Funds. You can also give or gain a little immortality while making a lasting impact on future generations through the gift of an endowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone you would like to honor.

Educational Improvement Tax

Credit Program (EITC) Companies that do business and pay corporate taxes in Pennsylvania may receive substantial tax credits for donations to Devon Preparatory School‟s student financial aid program. The Educational Improvement Tax Credit program is a wonderful opportunity for Devon Preparatory School. Our financial aid program, which provides financial assistance to needy students, is primarily funded by individual contributions to the school. Corporate support allows us to offer access to a private school education to more students, who may otherwise not be able to attend Devon Prep.

We are grateful to the following companies for their participation in the Matching Gifts to Education Program. Through their programs, these corporations and foundations have enabled our donors to double or even triple their gifts to Devon Prep. By enrolling in your com-pany’s Matching Gifts Program, you can bring significant additional support to our school. Please check your company’s participation in this program or contact the Development Office for more information. “You see, what really makes Devon so different is that the school truly fosters a

sense of community and family.

At the same time, we are unafraid to take a stand as a place where religion is an

intrinsic part of our daily lives. That‟s something you‟re not going to find at most

colleges and universities. Devon has always made its mission very clear. For its

alumni, the school doesn‟t have hopes but rather expectations. We are all

charged to serve God through our service to humanity.”

“When you‟re at Devon you‟re surrounded by excellence. But really it goes

beyond the academic rigor. There‟s a moral and ethical foundation. It‟s

not only knowing what‟s right or wrong, but you‟re encouraged to have a

moral...fortitude that not only do you know what‟s right and wrong, but

you‟re willing to do what‟s right.”

Devon Prep‟s first graduating class, the Class of

1960, returned to campus for their 50th reunion

weekend in late 2009. Along with their spouses

they enjoyed a cocktail reception at a class-

mate‟s home, dinner in the area, and a tour of a

much different school than existed 50 years

ago. Before bidding each other goodbye they

attended Mass together in St. Mary‟s Chapel

Grandparents &

Special Others Day

More than 115 Devon Prep students welcomed their grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings and/or friends to the school’s annual Grandparents and Special Others Day. Held in the school’s athletic facility, the day began with a continental brunch as the guests gathered with their Devon Prep hosts. There they met other students as well as other guests.

After the brunch they were treated to a presentation by Devon Prep’s Music Society. Before leaving for the day many of the students took their guests for a tour of the school, to meet teachers and a stop in the school store.

Devon Prep has been holding Grandparents and Special Others Day for more than 10 years and it has proven to be a very popular Thanksgiving tradition for the students and their guests. Many of the attendees look forward to spend-ing this special time with their Devon Prep student each year.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2009-10 13

“We have watched our sons mature from middle school into their junior year

in high school at Devon Prep. The Devon experience -- a nurturing culture

in middle school and a challenging but supportive curriculum in high

school -- has been instrumental in molding them into the fine young

men they are today.”

DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL 14

Devon Prep’s Parents’ Association raised over $55,000 with TIDE 2010 which was held on campus on Saturday, April 17. The theme –“Puttin’ on the Ritz-TIDE Style” –was beautifully carried out through the entire school, including the mansion and gym. The food was delicious thanks to Devon’s own Mrs. Ruth Kalivas and the atmosphere was fun and exciting. Guests included Devon Prep parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends. In addition, many students worked as servers throughout the evening as well.

We offer our thanks and congratulations to Event Chairs Mike and Teri Magnotta and all of the parents who volunteered to make this event such a great success.

“I’m… richer from the experience.”

“Among the many benefits of being part of the Devon Prep family, two stand out:

Not a week goes by that I don't learn something from teaching these young men;

and I am constantly reminded that the future is in good hands. They care, and

their actions speak for them. Teaching them is a privilege I wouldn't have traded

for all the money in the world. In fact, I'm spiritually and professionally richer from

the experience.”

Annual Alumni Golf Outing

On Monday, September 28, 2009, more than 60 golfers traveled to Bellewood Golf Club in Pottstown to play in the an-nual Devon Prep Alumni Golf Outing. Alumni, parents, friends and senior members of the Var-sity Golf Team, spent an after-noon on the challenging links of the rolling hills at Bellewood. The winning foursome again this year included Jim (’87) and Ed (’88) Curran and Nick Meter ’88.

At the end of the day the golfers were joined by Fr. Jim Shea ’66, Devon Prep Headmaster,

and Mr. Barry Mulhern ’72, Alumni Association President, for a gourmet dinner. A large sign displayed the names of organizations and individuals sponsoring the Golf Outing. Led by Co-Chairmen Nick Ciocca ’93 and Sean O’Reilly ’93 and the Golf Committee, the Alumni Association raised more than $13,000 on behalf of Devon Prep through the generous support of its sponsors.

Thanks to all of our sponsors and golfers.

“I can state with pride that Devon Prep was instrumental in shaping me into who I am today.

We‟re a family, and there are so many opportunities here. The thing I love most about Devon

is that it encourages students to be themselves.

Fr. Shea is 100% right when he says that Devon is not a school it is an experience.

As with everything in life, the Devon experience is only as valuable as what you put into it. I

am fortunate to have built such a resilient base with my four years at Devon upon which I will

build my career and future.”

Devon Prep’s varsity baseball team, under coach Mark Aquilante, won the PIAA Class AA District 1 championship against New Hope-Solebury in early June. Devon's victory ended New Hope's three-year reign as District 1 champion.

"This is the first baseball championship for us since 1996," coach Aquilante said. "We lost to New Hope the past couple of years, so this is a great win for our kids. They deserve a ton of credit."

After winning the district title, the TIDE moved on to the PIAA Class AA state playoffs. Unfortunately, their season ended with a 10-2 loss to District 11 champions, Catasauqua, in the opening round. The TIDE ended their season 18-5.

DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL 20

,

“Teachers are the foundation of any school; they give the school its personality

and character. Devon teachers make the school an academic powerhouse.

Although we all endured some intense challenges along the way, the rigors of a

Devon education have prepared us well for college and life in the real world.

Most importantly, the Devon student is taught how to think critically, how to work

hard, and the meaning of integrity. The teachers make the school what it is. They

dedicate their time, their knowledge, and their undivided attention to educating us

and giving us the tools we need to be leaders in the future.

Devon is not about its exterior. At the heart of Devon Prep are its people. A

school can spend millions on new buildings and expensive upgrades, but there is

no substitute for good people. Devon is rich where it matters most.”

The Calasanctian Society

Devon Prep has established the Calasanctian Society to honor those who have shown their commitment to

Devon Prep through a very special and important form of financial support. These donors have named the school

as an ultimate beneficiary of a planned gift by including Devon Prep in their estate plans.

We direct gifts made through bequests to Devon Prep‟s permanent endowment, but they can be directed to anoth-

er use if you wish. Endowment is a particularly effective way to leave a lasting legacy, since the earnings

accrued on your gift will help to support the school in perpetuity.

If you have already made a planned gift, you are a member of the Calasanctian Society. You qualify for member-

ship simply by notifying us that your gift is arranged. If you have any questions about making a planned gift to

Devon Prep, please contact your financial advisor or you may contact the school.

We recognize and thank the following as members of the newly formed Calasanctian Society, whose considered

generosity helps to insure Devon Prep‟s future.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2009-10 23

It only takes a few minutes to get to St. Norbert‟s Church in Paoli from Devon Prepara-

tory School in Devon. But for Nelson Henao that short trip took nearly 15 years.

Rev. Nelson Henao, Sch. P. was ordained to the priesthood last March in St. Norbert‟s

Church by Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia. Father Nelson fulfilled his

dream of joining the Piarist Fathers, the religious order of priests that conducts Devon

Prep, with over 300 guests as witnesses, including Rev. Mario Vizcaino, Sch.P. the Provin-

cial Superior of the Piarist Father‟s USA Province, as well as priests, students, parents,

alumni, family and friends.

Father Nelson‟s journey began 55 years ago in Bogota, Columbia where he was born

the oldest of five children. He studied in Catholic schools throughout his childhood and as a

young man he pursued studies in the Hotel and Restaurant Management field. In the late

1990‟s, after many years of secular life, he went through a long process of rediscovering

his faith and felt the call of God to serve His people. In 2002 he decided to enter religious

life by joining the Piarist Fathers.

Father Nelson studied philosophy at St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami, and theology

at the Gregorian University in Rome. In September of 2008 he came to Devon Prep where

he began a new journey as a teacher of religion in the Middle School. In 2009 he was or-

dained to the Sacred Order of the Diaconate by Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas, D.D.

Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia.

In his homily, Cardinal Rigali told Father Nelson, “The joy you bring to your family is a

sign of what your ministry is meant to bring to the entire people of God. As a priest,” the

Archbishop continued, “you will serve the people of God in so many relevant ways. There

is no greater human fulfillment than to touch human hearts through the power of the Holy

Spirit.”

In the past two years Father Nelson has touched the hearts of Devon Prep faculty, staff

and families as well as many members of St. Norbert‟s Parish. But perhaps those touched

the most by Father Nelson‟s spirit are his students. They shared their thoughts in letters

written for his ordination.

“Father, you taught me so much,” a Sixth Grader wrote. “Even though I am not Catholic, I now truly believe in God‟s presence… remember

that God created you for this purpose.”

An Eighth Grader wrote, “It has been a pleasure and an honor to have been part of your long journey. We are proud of you and your

achievement. I am grateful to you for not only teaching me religion, but also many life lessons. We are blessed by the presence of such a caring

and generous person like you.”

“Congratulations on becoming a priest! It will be exciting to see you say Mass,” wrote a Seventh Grader. “You will be very good at being a

priest. I know it because a big part of being a priest is being a good person, and you are a great person!”

Rev. Nelson Henao, Sch.P. celebrated his First Mass as a newly ordained Piarist Father on Sunday, March 28 in Devon Prep‟s gym for over

200 parents, students, alumni and other guests. Devon Prep‟s Student Council sponsored a barbeque picnic in his honor following the Mass.

Nelson Henao Ordained to the Priesthood

“Being a small school rooted in a Catholic, Christian tradition, we believe in

the formation of the entire individual - academically, athletically, spiritually,

socially, morally, and emotionally.

For many of our students this becomes a second home. And ultimately our

goal is to take young men, train them in an academic environment, but at the

same time give them a sense of values and morals and ethics. And we hope

that we are training not just young men who will be leaders in the world, but

who will change the world in a positive way.”

Mr. Larry Iezzi

Assistant Headmaster

“...we believe in the formation of the entire individual.”
