established: to honor and recognize individuals who have named

AS LEAVES BEGAN TO FALL on the

rustic but elegantly decorated pavilion

and serene pond at The Pavilion at

Gaie Lea in Staunton, more than

150 friends of the Augusta Health

Foundation gathered for the

Foundation’s annual signature

event, Shades of Autumn.

The Sept. 16 event fea-

tured hors d’oeuvres, adult

beverages and a jazz quartet.

In addition, community and

business leaders, Augusta

Health physicians, employees

and grateful patients came

together for an all-around

great cause: the expansion of

Augusta Health’s Emergency

Department.

Thanks to the generosity

of sponsors, attendees and

individual donors, Shades of Autumn

raised more than $85,000 to provide

for an advanced trauma or criti-

cal care area in the new Emergency

Department planned at Augusta

Health. “Given our location not far

from Interstates 81 and 64, Augusta

Health Emergency Department physi-

cians and staff care for many patients

with severe trauma,” said David Fosnocht, MD, chair of

Emergency Medicine. “This new Resuscitation Area will

provide ample space and the most advanced technology

to diagnose and treat patients with critical injuries, or suf-

fering from stroke, cardiac or other life-threatening events.”

The event was made possible by many of Augusta

Health’s business partners and community advocates. In

addition to the generosity of Bob and Liz Schreiber, the

proprietors of Gaie Lea, more than 20 local businesses and

hospital vendors provided sponsorships. Alltran, one of the

health system’s business partners, served as the Signature

Event Grand Sponsor. “We are truly humbled by the gen-

erosity of our sponsors. Without their support, this special

event would not be possible,” said Tami Radecke, execu-

tive director, Augusta Health Foundation.

Sodexo, Augusta Health’s food service partner, once

again generously provided the food and catering services

for the event. “The food was amazing,” said Barbara Frank-

lin of Fishersville, Shades of Autumn committee member.

“Mango crab in endive leaves, goat cheese poppers with

honey, and the beef tenderloin with garlic and merlot jam

were some of my favorites.”

“Our Committee volunteers have helped us manage

every detail, and we are most grateful for their hands-

on efforts,” said Susannah Via, Annual Fund officer and

Shades of Autumn coordinator.

WHEN BJ AND CAROLYN HARVICK

retired to Augusta County, they were

on the lookout for a beautiful place

to enjoy family visits and make new

friends. But they also knew they

needed a place with excellent

healthcare. BJ has been a patient

at Augusta Health on numerous

occasions. He and Carolyn both

volunteer their time and loving care,

alongside their dog, Cider, to the

many Recreation Therapy patients

who come through the Animal

Assisted Therapy Program.

During a conversation centered

on the importance of the Augusta

Health Foundation, BJ was adamant

about the quality healthcare and

compassionate staff here at Augusta

Health. He even offered to share his

patient experience with thousands

of others across the Shenandoah

Valley through a special letter. Here

is his story:

Dear Friends,

Carolyn and I moved to the Shenandoah Valley because we believe it to be as splendid a place to live as any we have ever seen. We love the beauty, the weather and the people. When considering a place to retire, we knew that at the top of the list had to be a health system that offered solid and excellent healthcare. When we discovered Augusta Health, we knew very quickly that Augusta County would be our next home.

Both of us — and our children — have been patients at several top-notch hospitals and all have been excellent. Yet, now we have been patients at Augusta Health or received treatment there and, with all things considered and when possible, we eagerly prefer Augusta Health to other options.

I have been a patient at Augusta Health in the emergency room to treat a reckless mishap, in skilled nursing for spinal surgery recovery and as an oncology patient for radiation treatment — all within the past eight years. Clearly, health threats and treatments are never welcomed. Nevertheless, as patients at Augusta Health, we have been surrounded by highly skilled physicians who have chosen to practice here and a nursing staff that is by any standard the envy of other healthcare facilities. This includes enthusiastic and upbeat CNA staff and folks who see to our every need. I place Augusta Health’s caregivers and staff above any I have ever experienced. Augusta Health is truly world class for patient treatment in my book!

For an Augusta County resident to have a home-based hospital on a national top 50 list is remarkable. And in my particular case, to be treated at our oncology department that has a Duke Health affiliation is icing on the cake.

Where other hospitals across the country have lost their autonomy, Augusta Health continues to be led by a strong Board of Directors and administrators, and recruits world-class physicians who are lured here by the beauty and friendliness of our community. Our region has a community-centered, top-notch healthcare facility guided by local values and principles. It is a great treasure.

We would do well to ensure Augusta Health’s vitality and financial strength. It is my fervent aspiration that we can bequeath to the next generation what has, at great cost, been handed down to us. I hope you will consider a gift to support patient care initiatives at Augusta Health.

EACH YEAR, the Augusta Health

Foundation provides for new and

expanded patient care programs at

Augusta Health because of the gener-

osity of many residents, foundations,

organizations and businesses in our

community.

The Foundation helps to ensure

that our community has access to

top-notch healthcare and lifesaving

care right here at home, when critical

minutes matter. All administrative

costs of operating the Augusta

Health Foundation are generously

provided for by Augusta Health.

Therefore, 100 percent of all gifts

supports the patient or employee

service designated by the donor.

Every dollar raised by the Foundation

stays right here in our community.

In the first half of 2016, the Foun-

dation provided for three new patient

services:

* New communications technology for patients who

are deaf or hearing impaired. This new service is

available in the hospital, as well as at Augusta Health

locations throughout the Greater Augusta area.

* A Medication Assistance Program for uninsured and

underinsured patients. This program provides free

prescription medications to uninsured and underinsured

patients. The Medication Assistance Program is one of

42 across the Commonwealth made possible through

the Virginia Health Care Foundation’s Rx Relief program.

* Breastfeeding Education program. This service is

geared to new moms who need extra assistance and

support while learning to breastfeed.

In addition, the Augusta Health Foundation continues to

fund many patient programs and services that would not

exist without the generosity of those who make gifts to the

Foundation, such as: the Shenandoah House Gifted Care

Program, Camp Dragonfly, the Employee Emergency Fund,

the Cancer Services Bridge Fund, the Cancer Healing Arts

Program, nursing education awards, the Managing Health

Outcomes program and Living Well With Diabetes, just to

name a few.

local residents with free

prescription medications.

SINCE MARCH, Augusta Medical Group, a network of

employed physicians, advanced practice providers and

caregivers, has provided more than 420 uninsured and

underinsured residents of Staunton, Waynesboro and

Augusta County with free prescription medications through

a new Medication Assistance Program (MAP). More than

1,515 prescription medications with a wholesale value

of $1,837,381 have been processed during the first six

months of the program.

This program would not be possible without the Virginia

Health Care Foundation’s RxRelief funding. “The Virginia

Health Care Foundation (VHCF) has provided RxRelief

funding for 42 Medication Assistance Programs across the

Commonwealth. We are most grateful for the grant to make

this program possible for residents in our area,” said Tami

Radecke, executive director, Augusta Health Foundation.

The grant provides two Medication Assistance

caseworkers (MACs) and covers the licensing fees

for The Pharmacy Connection (TPC), a web-based

software program. Patients are referred to the program

by physicians throughout the cities of Staunton and

Waynesboro, and Augusta County. A patient may self-

refer by calling the Medication Assistance Program in

the Medical Home Clinic in Fishersville at (540) 213-

2615 but must have a prescription from a provider.

After a patient is referred, a caseworker confirms eligibil-

ity and processes the financial assistance paperwork with

the pharmaceutical vendors. The drugs covered through

the program are trade “brand name” drugs because

generic drugs would require co-pays, and the purpose

of the program is to provide the drugs free of charge to

Once the prescription order is placed,

the medications are delivered to the

Medication Assistance Program office.

A caseworker works with the patient

on the delivery of the medication and

provides medication education. The

entire process can take four to six weeks.

For medications needed immediately,

the caseworker works with physicians,

pharmacies and vendors to provide

“bridge” medications so the patient does

not miss a required dose. The Medication

Assistance Program recently expanded to

include prescription eyewear.
