From the Headmaster

                        DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL 2

Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family, From the very first day I stepped through the doors to Devon Prep in September 1962, this school has been a huge part of my life. I received my formative high school education from the dedicated Piarist Fathers and lay faculty members who had the wisdom to understand that education is not the same thing as teaching. The education provided by these wonderful professionals enabled each student to reach his full potential in an environment in which excellence was expected and Christian values were foundational. Simply stated, my high-school experience at Devon Prep changed my life. Devon Prep continues to change lives. As Devon develops the minds of our students, it simultaneously provides opportunities to grow in spirit so that each of the young men entrusted to our care can develop into men with a respect for God and neighbor. In addition to the quality education in the classroom our students also benefit enormously from their shared experience on field trips and as team members, on the stage or in the many service projects that we sponsor. Similar benefits result from enthusiastic student participation in our many athletic and other extra-curricular opportunities. All of these facets of life at Devon Prep enable our students to grow as individuals, gaining a deeper understanding of themselves, their talents, their responsibili-ties, and their place in our world. The professional, personal, and spiritual accomplishments of our alumni are a proud testament to the success of the Devon Experience. The Devon Experience! As you read the pages of this report you will certainly note that Devon Prep is blessed with many wonderful benefactors who make this Devon Experience a reality. Their faithful support for our mission yields dividends which last forever. I now ask you to continue this support or to join the many whose generosity is reflected in this publica-tion. Your support provides needed scholarships and financial aid opportunities for deserving students, helps to attract and retain dedicated faculty and staff, provides needed materials for classrooms and labs, and funds the many Devon extracurricular activities so that we may continue to provide that same Devon Experience which has changed so many lives. Thank you again and may God bless you and your loved ones, now and always!

Gratefully,

Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P.

Headmaster

Mission Statement

Devon Preparatory School is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school for young men in grades six to twelve. Devon Prep’s approach to education is based on the traditions of the Piarist Fathers who are dedicated to the education of youth. For more than 50 years Devon Prep has provided a trusting and supportive atmosphere where young men are motivated to excel academically, think independently and creatively, to pursue careers in diverse fields and to enjoy extracurricular activities, both in school and in the community. It is the goal at Devon Prep to inspire in our students a commitment to values that will enable them to become responsible leaders. Focusing on each student’s potential, we believe that the school and the family must work together to foster a love of learning which will propel the student into a lifelong quest for excellence— for the glory of God and the service of neighbor.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS  2012‐13  3

Page 4: Devon Prep Annual Report of Gifts 2012-13

Devon Prep Annual Fund Gifts to the Annual Fund are the cornerstone of the School’s development program. These gifts, from trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends, support the current operations of the school, providing additional resources to enrich the educational experiences of our students. Capital Giving Gifts to the Capital Giving Fund allow us to meet the long-term goals identified in an internal assessment and in our strategic plan. These gifts funded the construction of Saint Anthony Hall and other campus improvements and will fund an endowment to provide for Devon’s future needs. Please contact the Development Office to discuss a Capital Fund Gift. Matching Gifts The easiest way to make your gift to Devon Prep grow is through matching gifts. Many employers sponsor match-ing gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. If you work for a company that matches gifts, you can double or triple the value of your contribution! Contact your Human Resources Department for eligibility information and to obtain a matching gift form, and follow your employer’s matching gift procedures United Way Devon Prep is eligible to participate in the Donor Choice/Specific Care Program of the United Way of Greater Phil-adelphia and Southern New Jersey. During the United Way’s annual campaign, donors may designate a gift to Devon Prep on the Donor Choice pledge/designation form through Specific Care. Devon Prep is classified as a “non-member agency,” and recorded as DEVON PREP, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636. The assigned identification number is consistent from year to year. Workplace Giving Many companies and government agencies offer their employees the opportunity to make charitable gifts through payroll deduction. Such workplace giving pro-grams provide an easy and efficient way to make tax-deductible donations, and to spread your gift over an en-tire year. Please check with your employer to see if this is an option for you, and ask how you can designate your gift to Devon Prep.

Ways of Giving to Devon Prep Memorial and Tribute Gifts Donors can further educational opportunities at Devon Prep by honoring or memorializing a special person or event. Acknowledgment of the gift is made directly to the family or designated individual. Gifts of Appreciated Property A gift of stock, real estate or other appreciated property can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax advantages to the donor. The full value of the securities is usually deductible, and you may avoid the capital gains tax on the profit. Bequests Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to your will. You may wish to consider naming Devon Prep to receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning you can protect your family and also contribute to the fi-nancial security of Devon Prep. If you have already consid-ered Devon Prep in your estate plans, please let us know, so that we may count you among the members of The Ca-lasanctian Society. Gifts in Kind Devon Prep gratefully accepts gifts of supplies, books, and equipment. Tax deductions are available for firms and individuals contributing gifts in kind to educational insti-tutions. Scholarship Gifts While unrestricted gifts to the Annual Giving Fund pro-vide Devon Prep with operating funds to help maintain the quality of its academic programs, scholarship gifts enable the school to award scholarship aid to deserving students. Scholarship gifts can be made to the General Scholarship Fund, or to one of the named Scholarship Funds. You can also give or gain a little immortality while making a last-ing impact on future generations by establishing an en-dowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone you would like to honor. Educational Improvement Tax Credit Pro-gram (EITC)

Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) Companies that do business and pay corporate taxes in Pennsylvania may receive substantial tax credits for dona-tions to Devon Preparatory School’s student financial aid

fund through two programs. The Educational Improve-ment Tax Credit (EITC) Program and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Program together pro-vide a wonderful opportunity for Devon Preparatory School, and a way for businesses to turn their tax dol-lars into donations. Our financial aid program, which provides financial assistance to needy students, is primarily funded by individual contributions to the school. Corporate support allows us to offer access to a private school education to more students, who may otherwise not be able to attend Devon Prep. For more information on these programs visit www.newpa.com or contact the Development Office at Devon Prep.
