Class IX Summer Holidays’ Home Work-Assignment 1

English

NOTE-This task is to be done in the HW notebook. You may paste this worksheet in the

copy.

Read the passage below and attempt the questions that follow:

Invitation to the Royal Wedding

1 Even under normal circumstances, buying a wedding gift is complex. But buying a

gift for someone who is fifth in line to become king is filled with pitfalls. But here‘s the excellent

news: It doesn‘t matter what you buy! Protocol dictates that the Royals must accept every gift,

no matter how awful. So this might be an opportune time to unload the unwanted gifts you

received for your birthday.

2 Did you get your fascinator yet? That‘s a trick question because you probably don‘t

even know what a fascinator is. Royal dress code etiquette states that women must wear hats

for formal events, and fascinators are the preferred accessory. These funny hats have a large

decorative design—often floral—attached to a band or clip. Gentlemen are expected to wear

morning coats and top hats. Royals will likely don their military uniforms.

3 Men, when greeting the Royals, a simple bow will do. Not so low that it looks as if

you‘re examining the carpet for any medals they might have dropped. This is a subtle neck

bow. Women perform a curtsy. Simply put one leg behind the other, bend your knees and bow

your head slightly. The first rule of talking to the Queen: Don‘t talk. That is, unless spoken to. If

she does start a conversation and you find you‘ve run out of interesting stuff to discuss after

―Hello,‖ break the ice with a joke. Watch the Queen‘s reaction.

4 It‘s said that if she moves her handbag from its normal spot on her left arm to her

right arm, her handlers know that she wants to wrap up her chat with you. Don‘t be deterred. If

the Queen places her handbag on the floor, that is a sign that she needs to be saved from an

uncomfortable encounter ASAP. If the queen takes her handbag and stuffs it in your mouth,

then that signifies that she‘s not waiting for help!

5 Every meal begins and ends with the Queen. You can‘t start eating until she starts,

and you stop when she stops. When dining, the royals hold knives in their right hand and forks

in their left with the tines facing down. Instead of stabbing their food and making a complete

mess like normal people, they balance morsels on the back of their forks, then bringing them to

their mouths. Should they spill even a pea, they drop one spot in the royal line of succession.

6 During the wedding ceremony in the church, the Royal family usually sits on the

right-side of the church, but if the groom is not royal, then they will sit on the left. A royal trend

that was started long ago in 1840, would last until today, with every British royal bride carrying

flowers that include a sprig from a myrtle shrub. But they'll be no tossing the bouquet to all the

single ladies. The late Queen Mother started another tradition, leaving the bouquet in

Westminster Abbey at the grave of the Unknown Warrior, to honor those in military service.

Have you unearthed your invitation yet? No? Don‘t worry. Don't worry if you didn't get invited,

there are other royal family milestones you can participate in this year!

i. What does the rule says about the Royals accepting gifts?

ii. What do Royals wear at wedding functions?

iii. What is the indication that the Queen wishes to finish her conversation with someone?

iv. How are men supposed to greet the Queen?

v. How do the Royals hold their cutlery?

vi. What was the tradition that the Queen Mother started?

vii. How do the Queen‘s handlers know that she needs to be rescued from an

uncomfortable situation?
