ADDITIONAL INFO

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING? Children who are not potty-trained need to wear a swim diaper. Long hair needs to be tied-back to help them swim without the distraction of hair in the face. Although not required, we suggest that girls wear a one piece suit so that they do not have to adjust it while swimming.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILD’S LESSON? Yes! We require that parents stay during lessons but ask that parents stay within the seating areas so that the children are not distracted.

WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS? Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missed classes.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER? The decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather will be made as early as possible. We will notify you of any cancellations as soon as we can.

All sessions have 2 inclement weather make up dates set in case classes are cancelled. However, the YMCA can only guarantee 6 classes per session. Inclement weather makeInclement weather makeInclement weather makeInclement weather make----up days are typically on Fridays, same time.up days are typically on Fridays, same time.up days are typically on Fridays, same time.up days are typically on Fridays, same time.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE? Once a session has begun, if the child is pulled out of the class by the parents/guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit. No refunds will be issued.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS AFRAID OF THE WATER? If your child is fearful of water, our instructors will be limited in their ability to help during group lessons. Most fears come from a lack of exposure to water, resulting in uncertainty of the water. In order for children to learn to swim, they must be willing to participate and attempt the skills that are being taught.

We recommend helping your child get adjusted to water by playing in the bathtub. Water on and around a child’s face can be an overwhelming experience the first time it happens. Help them prepare before they

arrive at lessons. Also consider private swim lessons for one on one attention.

The purpose of CYSL competitive swimming is to provide young boys and girls an opportunity to participate in competitive swimming, under conditions that will foster skillful aquatic ability, good fellowship, team association loyalty, a finer appreciation of swimming for its own sake and not just for winning; and sportsmanship of a high type on the part of spectators, as well as swimmers and officials.

They should be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Swim goggles may be used. Self defense and self protection are an important priority for women. According to statistics, a woman who is only 21 years of age has a 25 percent risk of suffering violent crime in her life. When a woman's safety is in danger, defending herself by fighting back is the most ethical decision she can make.

This 2 hour course taught by Master John Roberson of Palmetto Martial Arts will empower women to feel they have options when presented with difficult situations. The YMCA is proud to partner with Master Roberson!

SUPPORTERS $12-$119

FRIENDS $120-$239

CHAMPIONS $240-$999

Each year, the Pickens County YMCA scholarships thousands of dollars to families and children in need in our community. We offer valuable services that many in our community need and want to be a part of such as afterschool and summer camp. As a non-profit, we strive to serve everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We raise money each year to fund what we call the “Share the Spirit Fund”, which allocates money to those asking for help. All money that is donated to our Y stays in our community and goes directly to those in need. In 2013, our YMCA provided $113,878 in scholarships!

Like many other non-profits, we strive to raise money so that we do not have to turn anyone away that is in need. However, in 2013 we were only able to raise $83,114 through direct donations, United Way and special events.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Pickens County YMCA is a community non-profit (501c3) company that serves the local community through membership and programs. The ‘Y’ receives no government funding nor is it governed by the community. The PC YMCA is governed by a local Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD has full authority to execute all decisions regarding policies, financial obligations, supervision of the CEO, and the future happenings of the YMCA. Board Members serve a 3 year term but are eligible to serve again after one year. All board members are full volunteers and receive no compensation or benefits for their service to the YMCA. The Pickens County Y BOD requests all matters regarding the YMCA be brought to the staff and/or CEO. Day-to-day issues, program decisions, facilities and interpretation of policy are the decisions of the CEO. The BOD serve primarily as a policy making body. They also approve the vision of the YMCA, financial debts and supervision of the CEO. Board Members serve the YMCA by offering their ‘4-W’s’.

WORK Serving on the BOD requires work. Whether its manual labor, writing letters, making phone calls, planning events or researching policies. Work must be performed by the members.

WEALTH Financial contributions to the YMCA is a requirement to serve as a Board Member. The amount is not specified. Board Members are also asked to raise funds in the community for the Share the Spirit Fund (pg 26). Soliciting funds is something that all Board Members and staff do in service of the Pickens County YMCA.

WITNESS Sharing with the community, friends, and family about the YMCA and its impact on the community is an important factor of being a great board member.

WISDOM When the YMCA needs to make important decisions, the collective experience of the Board Members are critical in making wise decisions. If you have an interest in serving on the board, please contact Sid Collins at [email protected]
