West Salem ~ Putting the Unity in Community
Since 1782!
C a r i n g
f o r o u r T r e e s
Thank you for your efforts to support and maintain the beautification of our neighborhood!
In the fall of 2011, as part of the West Salem Tree Project, over 900 trees and shrubs
were planted along major corridors of the neighborhood, including Academy, Broad
& Hutton Streets.
We’d like to encourage and inform you of our responsibilities to maintain the beauty
and health of these trees and shrubs in light of the extreme heat and drought of our
summer.
What you should know
It is your responsibility to water the trees and
shrubs in front of your homes. An inch per
week is ideal (roughly 15 gallons). (Every resident was informed of this with door hangers
by the city of Winston-Salem before the plantings were
done.)
It is also your responsibility to carefully mow
and trim around the trees and shrubs in a
manner than is not harmful to them.
All other maintenance issues including
trimming, pruning, repairing or replacing will
be done by the city. Please call 311 to report
any issue with your trees or shrubs. The city
is planning to replace any dead trees or
shrubs in late fall of 2012.
You…

Meet Nico Rodriguez La Haie. Nico moved to Walnut Street in West Salem one year ago to be closer to school. He’s 15 years old and a sophomore at UNC School of the Arts High School where he studies the trumpet. Having played since 8 years old, Nico is quite an accomplished musician. Last spring, he was a semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition in Washington D.C. where he met Doc Severinsen, his trumpet-playing idol.
Nico came to North Carolina with his family so he could specifically study at UNCSA. His high school curriculum includes normal studies throughout the week except Wednesdays. On Wednesday, Nico spends the entire day with other students in an art studio honing their craft. Music students are placed in large ensembles to put on concerts at The Stevens Center or Crawford Hall. Nico has played both.
When Nico isn’t playing the trumpet, he loves to swim competitively for the YMCA as well as WS Parks & Rec during the summer. He also enjoys doing yard work around the neighborhood to earn money for his music needs and trip fees. He paid for his D.C. trip that way! (if you need his help mowing ($15/yard) or shaping up your yard ($10/hr), give him a call: 336.422.8552)
As if semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition wasn’t enough, you can count 2nd place winner in the Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest in West Salem among his credits!
Maybe you’ll run into Nico on the streets of West Salem. He has just hit the road with his driver’s permit!

Don’t miss our September 4th
Neighborhood
Meeting where two guests will join us.
Kelly Mitner of Habitat for Humanity will speak
about the A Brush with Kindness
Program.
“Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness is an exterior home preservation service that offers painting, landscaping, weather stripping and minor repair services for homeowners in need. ABWK helps low-income homeowners impacted by age, disability and family circumstances, who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes, reclaim their homes with pride and dignity.”
If you are interested in participating in the program
or would like to volunteer, please let us know!
([email protected]) We hope you’ll
attend the meeting to learn more.
Also, John Redmond of Home Energy Solutions of the
Triad will speak on how to make your home more energy efficient.
And as always, we’ll have a brief update from our local police officers concerning
all safety issues in West Salem. Join us as we connect with our neighbors and
share snacks. See you there!
