They expressed concerns about the viability of their business model, and mentioned they have tried to sell the building without success. They also expressed concern over the density of the vegetation around the sidewalk from Broad St. to Green St. as well as around and under the footbridge. Specifically citing the proliferation of seasonal homeless camps and the cover the vegetation provides for illicit activity. The meeting was concluded at 8pm with several invitations of friendship and cooperation made by various community members. The owners were invited to attend monthly West Salem Neighborhood Association meetings, and it was resolved that the owners will begin receiving the monthly newsletter. Royal Inn Meeting Opening remarks were made by Council Woman Molly Leight welcoming all in attendance and thanking them for their participation in this important issue.

Capt. Mitchell Masencup of the Winston-Salem Police Department then addressed the members of the community asking that a respectful and positive tone be maintained in an effort to foster productive communication with the owners of the Royal Inn.

Asst. City Attorney Alan Andrews then offered a brief explanation about the laborious, costly and difficult legal processes required to pursue a public nuisance abatement under chapter 19 of the NC General Statutes. Attorney Andrews further encouraged the gathered community members to seize the opportunity at hand to try and formulate a solution with the owners of the Royal Inn outside of the legal system. Further noting this type of resolution offers the opportunity for a win-win for all parties involved.

At this point the Owners of the Royal Inn arrived, were seated and introductions were exchanged.

Several concerns were voiced by the community regarding the criminal activity occurring around the motel, the policies and procedures in place by the management to address those activities, the general appearance of the building and grounds, and their willingness to make changes and work with the community for a mutually beneficial outcome.

The owners of the Royal Inn expressed openness to suggestions from the community about changes they could make as well as a willingness to better engage the community going forward.

A great, quick way to dry herbs: just lay a sheet of newspaper on the seat of your car, arrange the herbs in a single layer, then roll up the windows and close the doors. Your herbs will be quickly dried to perfection. What's more, your car will smell great!

It was further recommended by Attorney Andrews and Capt. Masencup that a committee be formed by community members to continue working directly with the owners to formulate and implement strategies to begin addressing some of the concerns raised.

As of 4/11/2013 I began gathering information from various city departments and governmental authorities to establish a reasonable scope of services we can expect from them specifically regarding the footbridge and the vegetation along business 40. I also stopped by the Royal Inn and thanked Mr. Jack Patel again for his attendance and willingness to work together moving forward. By 5/1/2013. I expect to have enough actionable information from the City and DOT to begin forming the suggested committee to further address these issues. I look forward to your continued participation and input as we continue to improve our neighborhood.

Don’t let the squash borer get the best of you! They are moths that lay their eggs on the stem of squash plants. Hatching larvae usually bore directly into the stem and feed internally for about 4-6 weeks, though some may feed externally prior to entering the stem.

Before you know it, your entire plant has wilted and quickly dies.

A natural way to help prevent the borer from destroying your squash is to keep dirt loosely piled on and around the base of your stem. The moth will not lay its eggs on the dirt.

What did the carrot say to the wheat? Lettuce rest, I'm feeling beet.

Bingo was a hit! Don’t miss the next game night at the Civic Club Facility on May 11th, 7p.
