Happy 2013 West Salem! We hope everyone had a safe and joyous holiday season.

It is time to renew our Officers and Board of Advisors for the West Salem Neighborhood Association.

We encourage everyone to attend our next meeting on February 5th at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall of Christ Moravian Church. It is the small brick building at the corner of Academy and Granville.

It’s a great opportunity to meet neighbors, learn about the positions available, and discover how the Association has impacted our neighborhood. We will be holding elections soon.

We hope you’ll take this invitation to make your own impact, large or small, in the ongoing efforts of the Association.

Why an Association? West Salem would not be on the Register of Historic Places without the previous work of our Association. We plan events like the Easter Egg Hunt, Music in the Park, The 2011 Tree Project, Fall Festivals, National Night Out, etc. We also tend to neighborhood issues involving housing, safety, and beautification among others.

Ultimately, we are a group of neighbors and friends who understand and appreciate the benefits of our synergy- that we are greater together than the sum of our individual parts.

Even if you have no interest in serving, we hope you’ll at least come say hello. A strong, healthy and thriving neighborhood is one where neighbors know each other.

So let’s do it. Let’s get to know each other. See you on the 5th!

Q: A: According to the city’s website, the sanitation

department of Winston-Salem collects curbside brush on a rotating schedule throughout four quadrants in the city. West Salem is located in the second quadrant. It takes crews an average of 4 weeks to cycle through all 4 quadrants. You can track the city’s current location on their website (see below).

Christmas trees, tree limbs and shrub trimmings may be placed in front of your home on the curb - do not completely obstruct the sidewalk, nor place debris in the street.

This is a good time of year to prune dormant fruit trees. Also, crape myrtles and butterfly bushes will benefit from thinning or pruning as blooms emerge from new growth.

How often does the city pick up brush from the curb?

In celebration of Meals-on-Wheels’ 50th anniversary in late 2012, legendary racecar driver Richard Petty delivered a meal right here in West Salem!

Mary Lee Slawter has lived on Wachovia Street for more than 75 years! She receives meals regularly from the program and was more than delighted to welcome Mr. Petty into her home.

Let’s talk history. Based on our recent Facebook poll for desired newsletter content, we discovered your interest in the historical details of our neighborhood and homes. West Salem is the second o ldest ne i ghborhood in town, so there’s a lot to talk about. First things first…

That’s when it all began for the neighborhood of West Salem. Comprised of farmland extending from the expansion of Salem (Old Salem as it is known today), our history begins with the

1782

stockburger farm.

As West Salem neighbor, Michael Bricker, writes in his book Historic West Salem, “Brother Johannes George Stockburger began the farm with the intent of providing milk and meat for the congregational town.” Congregational? That’s right. West Salem began as a settlement of

The 68 acre farm was short lived, with Brother Stockburger leaving in 1789. The original farmhouse, the first home in our neighborhood, later became the Salem Flour Mill (c. 1820). The structure still stands today, reflecting early 1900 renovations. That makes the Stockburger farmhouse the first and oldest home currently in West Salem at

DIY Tips Is your plaster cracking up, but it’s no laughing matter? Instead of costly repairs by a plaster professional, our neighbor Cameron suggests a DIY project that involves plaster washers (also known as ceiling buttons). You won’t find them in the big box stores. Try amazon.com. That’s where Cameron bought his. You’ll also need a box of drywall screws (those can be bought cheaper locally).

Cameron suggests that you don’t pick or chip away any of your cracking/loose plaster, as that can cause a large majority to fall down. Rather, he suggests re-securing it to the lathe behind with these little washers and screws that the professionals use. Then you can “feather out low cost joint compound” to cover and sand.

Check out his work. His bedroom went from drab to fab! Thanks for the tip, Cameron.

Brought to you by our neighbor ~ Cameron Sattenfield.
