Energy Tips
Ceiling fans work great to circulate air and
make you feel cooler. But when you aren’t
home, turn them off! You will save energy
since they don’t actually lower the temperature of your house.
And did you know that a full refrigerator & freezer uses less energy than an empty one?
That’s right! So spend your money stocking up
instead of paying extra for wasted space.
Bringing Neighbors to Neighbors ~ Want to share
your story? We’d love to feature you, your family
and/or your pets! Send photos & info to:

The West Salem Garden Club
forgot the thank the following people for their help during the
2012 West Salem Garden Tour:
Meet Peggy Caudle. She celebrated her 80th birthday in July. Almost all of Peggy’s birthdays have been celebrated here in West Salem. There have been, in the past decade, 4 generations of the family actually living in West Salem at the same time, including Peggy’s mother, the late great Lucy Bowles (Hutton St), her daughter Diane Saunders (Hutton St.), and her granddaughter, Jenny Hutcherson (Shober St). Before Lucy passed away, gatherings on Hutton would actually include five generations of the family!
Peggy has lived on Holland Street since 1966, but her family has lived in West Salem since before she was born, starting first on Bank Street in the 1920’s. Peggy was born on Poplar Street and lived there until she was 12 when her family moved to Hutton Street. She has lived, at various times, on Spring St., Poplar St., and Mulberry St. Her only time away from West Salem was a couple years spent on the north side of town, and a few years on Vintage Avenue in Washington Park (West Salem’s neighbor). Her five children were all raised in West Salem, and several of her grandchildren as well!
Peggy is recently retired from Forsyth Hospital. She enjoys spending time with her family, taking care of her beautiful flower gardens, watching the birds at her feeders, and an occasional trip to the Cherokee Casino. During nice weather you’ll find her on her front porch, so be sure to say hello to this West Salem fixture!

Know?
Peters Creek Parkway is undergoing a
study by the city of Winston-Salem
and DOT for major changes.
With guidance from the Peters Creek
Community Initiative and local
residents & businesses, concepts are
being considered that would reduce
the roadway to 4 lanes, making room
for such amenities as sidewalks,
landscaping, bike lanes and a
pathway. Roundabouts are also being
considered for the Academy Street
intersection and well as Link Road.
