Letter from the NCGA
In 2013, Americas farmers showed how, with resilience and resolve, they truly are heroes.
Following a year of record drought and confronting a late, wet planting season, these
strong, independent men and women worked tirelessly to plant a crop that would produce
an unparalleled abundance. Their hard work and determination provide our nation with
the corn that fuels our economy, feeds our people and drives innovation. Exhibiting
both character and excellence, corn farmers provide the uniquely American crop that
drives our countrys unequalled success. As you turn these pages, you too can take
a journey that celebrates the World of Corn.

The World of Corn
U.S. Corn at a Glance2013
Corn starch is preferred in manycommercial food applications dueto its translucent nature versusflour which is opaque.
Corn starch can be used to createpolylactic acid polymers. Thesecan be processed into sustainableversions of fibers and plastics.
Corn syrup is used as asweetener, thickeningagent and as a humectant,a water-absorbingingredient helping foodretain freshness.
Only the starch is used to make
ethanol. The remaining nutrients, protein, fiber and oil, knownas Dried Distillers Grains withSolubles are used as feed.
*In dry-grind ethanol process.**In wet-mill ethanol process.Gluten feed is 20 percent protein and gluten meal is 60 percent protein.

Founded in 1957, the National Corn Growers Association represents more than 40,000 dues-paying corn farmers nationwide and the
interests of more than 300,000 growers who contribute through corn checkoff programs in their states. NCGA and its 48 affiliated state
associations and checkoff organizations work together to create and increase opportunities for their members and their industry.
