EDEN-NORTH COLLINS PENNYSAVER
Greetings and Welcome to the Eden Corn Festival
Well we made it through our first 50 years and will now embark on putting together the plan for the next 50 years of fun and excite-ment in the Eden Community.Looking back to last years 50th anniversary celebration, we had a great attendance and most of our vendors and local organizations had one of the best years they have ever had. (And the great weather didn’t hurt either). As we move into our 51st year
we will be partnering with a new amusement company. Bates Brothers Amuse-ments will be on board with us and will be bringing some fresh new attractions to the midway. We are looking to have a great long term relationship with them and hope that all of our visitors will be impressed by their operation. Some other good news… we have reformatted our daily and nightly enter-tainment schedule and will be bringing back the popular “Battle of the Bands”. We had this a couple years ago and had a lot of success but were not able to work out the details for the past 2 years, but I am glad to say that it is back and will be bigger, better, and more enjoyable than ever. This will now become an annual event at the Festival. Staying with entertainment no one will want to miss the Saturday evening “Beatlemania” show. This show will feature the original west coast cast, and from all I have seen and heard promises to be a spectacular event. Back and better than ever will be “The Eden Agricultural and Community Show-case”. This exhibit continues to grow and expand each year and is worth check-ing out. The committee that puts this together works year round planning and gathering new ideas. There will be a lot of emphasis placed on our communi-ty, you will see everything from the latest in new farming techniques, animals, school events, tractors, and may even watch trees be sawn into boards, so some pretty exciting stuff. I would be remiss if I did not bring up the sudden loss of a long time committee member. Jack Smith was taken from us in November of last year and it was a terrible loss not only for the festival but for the Eden Community. Jack was involved with every festival in one way or another. Chairing everything from the baseball programs to most recently the Hall of Fame program as well as being the Festivals historian. Jack gave the board a lot of guidance, encouragement, and fresh ideas. I am confident he is looking down at us from the 18th fairway and smiling, Jack you are truly missed by all. Very special thanks to all of our sponsors, without all of these businesses we would not be able to give you such a clean, affordable, entertaining, and family friendly event. Please be sure to view our program book and support all of these sponsors. In closing, I need to thank the 11 other board members who make me look good by putting on an outstanding Corn Festival year after year. There are countless hours of planning and executing put in to each festival from an all volunteer board of directors group. And lastly, I would like to thank everyone who attends and supports the Eden Corn Festival; you help to make it a great community for us to live in.
Sincerely,Jeff Winter, President Eden Corn Festival

One of the most popular parades in Western New York is the Eden Corn Festival Parade. Featuring marching units, consisting of multiple Bands, highly decorated Color Guards, polished Fire, Police & Emergency Departments, and beautifully deco-rated floats. The Eden Corn Festival
Parade also showcases the newly crowned Corn Festival Queen, and her contestants as well as the Corn King winners!
The parade will travel along Route 62 Sunday, August 3rd, with a 12 noon start. It is right in the heart of the Eden Community and is viewed by thousands of people lining both sides of the street. Many residents use the parade as a chance to have annual family, and neighborhood gatherings during the Eden Corn Festival Parade. The parade has been enjoyed since the festival began. It continues to delight and entertain all who come to watch.

“Celebrate Eden !” is a new presentation that will be aired for the first time at the Eden Corn Festival - July 31 - August 3, 2014. It is a slide and video presentation that features the many organizations, groups, churches and schools in Eden, focusing on their purpose, programs, and the people who make it all happen. Under the direction of Mr. Dave Kean, Social Studies/Economics teacher at Eden, it is being produced by the “Eden Raiders Respond Team” of students, who are contacting each organization, gathering information, photos, and video that will tell that organization’s story. This project is an extension of Eden’s Community Showcase.

An interactive, multi-media display of the many organizations, churches, clubs, schools, and farms in Eden. Learn about the academic, rec-reational, geographic, agricultural and historical interests and opportunities that collectively make up the “Fabric of Life” in Eden. More importantly, this exhibit will showcase the many fine people who are passionate about these organizations and who invest a large amount of their time and creativity to keep their organizations viable and to bring their valuable programs to town residents.
Location: In a large tent on the lawn in front of the elementary school playground. The exhibit will, in effect, be located between the Chicken BBQ dining tent and the Eden Elementary School. The sidewalk towards the school will lead you to the Showcase.
What you will find: Displays by many Town of Eden organizations, demonstrating their purpose, programs, and people. Also, there will be many photographic displays of local farming operations - you will see the wide variety of vegetables, fruits, horticultural crops, dairy products and livestock that are produced in abundance on Eden area farms.
Large Flat-Screen Television: A continuous slide show and video presentation will be projected, helping to visually explain and promote the many organizations and programs that the town has to offer its residents.
“Community Conversations” and “Focus on Farming”: Stop in to hear live interviews with individuals from various Town of Eden organizations and farms, each one with an interesting story to tell. Slides and video on the large-screen TV will accompany the conversations. A Question and Answer period to follow!
“Farm Friends: - We will have some furry four-legged friends stopping by! Visit the Barnyard Corral to feed the newborn calf, hold a baby piglet, pet a goat, learn about alpacas, and brush a mini horse. Learn all about the wide variety of livestock on Eden farms and their importance to the local and regional economy.
Stop by to learn why the Town of Eden is a great place to visit, do business, worship, live and raise your family!

The Garden Tractor Pull has been a part of the Eden Corn Festival since 2002, and the Eagle Garden Tractor Pullers Association (EGTPA) have been the only tractor pulling club providing the entertainment here, right from the be-ginning. In 2005 I was asked by the Vice-President of the Corn Festival to coordinate the event throughout the year and to do the announcing the night of the tractor pull. When I started, I meet the members of the club and made a promise to them that I would do all I can to provide a great track for the competitors and to provide a great show for the fans in the bleachers. In my humble opinion, I feel we have done just that.
One of the primary contacts I had with the club throughout the years has been Mrs. Barb Hackemer. Barb would send me the contract and insurance paperwork as part of work we did together during the planning of the festival and during the afternoon of the pulling event, we would set up the announcer’s booth and registration area for the pullers participating later in the day. Barb was the person responsible for making me sound educated while I was doing the announcing. She would hand me little clipboards of 3 X 5 cards with the names of the drivers, their home towns and the name of the tractors. She had “Cheat Sheets” made for me so I could inform the crowd of the tractor requirements for each of the seven classes of tractors seen during the pull. She even helped me pronounce some of the names of the drivers or the name of the towns. For the past few years, Barb has been doing double duty as the coordinator at the announcer’s booth and driving her own tractor. At the end of the night, Barb would help me hand out the trophies to the winners for each class and we would quickly tear down the booth and pack everything away in preparation for their next puling event.
In February, I started coordinating this year’s tractor pull and contacted Jeff Hackemer, Barbs husband, and the operator of the transfer sled the tractors hook up to and pull down the track, to discuss the pull for this year. Jeff informed me that Barb has been battling cancer and was not feeling well. At this point, the paperwork for the tractor pull was the last thing on our minds. When Jeff called back it was just after Easter and he told me Barb had passed the weekend before.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the Hackemer family and the EGTPA.

The first meeting of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 was held on February 10, 1920, at the Kazoo Factory. The Post was organized by Veterans returning home after serving in World War I. The first officers of Newell-Faulkner were Lewis Galloway, Commander; Ivan Hammond, Vice Commander; Allyn Maplesden, Treasurer and Edward Bartlett, Secretary.
The Post was named after Loren Newell, a Marine, who was the first serviceman from Eden to die in action on June 7, 1918, and Herman Faulkner, the second, who died on July 14, 1918.
Walter Watson was elected Treasurer (now called Finance Officer) a post he held for forty years, following which Paul DeBalski held the position for thirty-one years.
Membership swelled in 1945 with the return of Veterans who served in World War II.
Unit 880, the Auxiliary, was granted its charter in 1946 with Esther Maddocks serving as the first president.
Squadron 880, the Sons of the American Legion (SAL), was granted its unit in 2000, with Donald Greuschow serving as the first commander
Legion meetings were held at various sites over the years until a parcel of land on North Main Street, now known as Legion Drive, the present location of the Post, was obtained. Work on the clubhouse began in 1955. Thousands of hours of donated labor, materials and equipment went into the project under a Building Committee headed by Norman Soule.
At the time of the dedication of the building in May of 1957, there were 141 members of the Post. Presently, the membership of the Post is 368 and the Auxiliary membership is 175 and the SAL is 133.
As well as the clubhouse and hall (which was added in 1963), the Post complex now consists of a softball field, a basketball court, bar-b-que pit, a large building for outdoor functions, a heated swimming pool for which Legion members donated labor and materials and which was later donated to the Town of Eden who continues to operate it. Various other buildings are located on the property erected by other organizations for use during the Corn Festival and other events. One building has been erected for the use of the Firemen and one for use as a snack bar, locker and equipment building by Little Loop Football. The newest building is a storage facility built by the SAL to house supplies for community events.
The grounds of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 are home to the Eden Corn Festival; The Post, Auxiliary and SAL have established four scholarships for graduating Eden Central Seniors. Each organization grants a $2,000 scholarship to students who will be attending a four-year college and each awards a $1,000 Scholarship to students who will attend two-year schools.
Newell-Faulkner Post 880, its Auxiliary and the SAL donate very generously to many youth activities such as softball, baseball, soccer, hockey, football and to many various community and civic projects. They also pay many expenses incidental to its facilities which are utilized by Little League, Little

It has taken many people working together, over many years to get where we are today. As we move on to year 51, it is nec-essary to look back and thank all who have been a part of the Eden Corn Festival. One person in particular that has put an enormous amount of time and dedication into this organization is Mr. Jack Smith. Jack was a member of the organizing com-mittee for the Corn Festival, for which he remained active from its founding in 1962 to last year’s 50th anniversary celebration. He also served as the general chairman, parade chairman, corn master and softball chairman when the festival’s popular soft-ball tournament became a premier event. Thank you Jack for the years of great memories. You are truly missed by all.
The 2014 Corn Festival Program Book is dedicated to all who have collaborated to make the past 50 years of the
Corn Festival successful.
