First we will prepare the fabric for the front, back, and bottom of the bag. Cut a piece of fabric (we used sturdy upholstery fabric) to 9 1/2 inches by 23 inches.

We are placing the design in the exact center of the front of the bag. Lay the fabric with the right side up. With an air-erase pen, measure and mark down 4 1/2 inches on each side, starting at the top edges. Then, measure and mark in 4 3/4 inches from one of the corners along the top edge. Also, measure and mark in 4 3/4 inches in from one of the sides about 9 inches down from one of the top corners. Draw lines connecting these marks. Where the lines meet is the center of the front of the bag.

Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. Trim around the design to make it easy to place. Poke a hole in the center of the template and align it with the center point on the fabric. Make sure the design fits well within the shape. There should be about 2 3/4 inches of space from the edges of the design and the outer edges of the fabric.

Remove the template. Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with a bit of temporary adhesive. Smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

After the design has finished, unhoop the fabric and trim away the excess stabilizer on the back of the embroidery.

To prepare the inner lining, cut a piece of the nylon to 9 1/2 inches by 23 inches.

Now we will prepare the pockets. We will prepare the mesh pocket first. Cut a piece of mosquito mesh to 9 1/2 inches by 16 inches. Fold one short end of the mesh over 1/2 inch and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the fold.

Next, cut a piece of bias tape to 9 inches long. Wrap the tape around the seamed edge of the mesh. Then, align the bias tape edge of the mesh to the bottom edge of the 9 inch zipper and pin in place.

Using a zipper foot, sew a seam right along the inner edge of the bias tape.

Next, fold the mesh widthwise with the unfinished short end of the mesh aligned with the back of the top edge of the zipper. Cut another 9 inch length of bias tape and wrap it around the top edge of the zipper and the edge of the mesh. Pin in place and sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape.

Now we will add the mesh pocket to the inner lining piece. Lay the inner lining piece with the right side up and align the sides of the mesh pocket with the long sides of the lining piece. Position the top edge of the pocket 1 1/4 inch from the top edge of the lining piece. Pin in place and sew another seam along the inner edge of the tape on the top of the zipper. Also, sew a 1/4 inch seam along the sides of the pocket (on the mesh only not on the zipper).

Now we will prepare the nylon pocket. Measure and cut the pieces for the pocket using these dimensions:

A. Sides and bottom - one piece - 3 1/2 inches by 24 1/2 inches B. Front - one piece - 9 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches C. Top - 8 3/4 inches by 3 1/4 inches

Next, lay the front piece flat and align one of the long sides of the side / bottom piece with the right side (short side) of the front piece. Align the upper right corners of each piece together. Wrap bias tape around the layers on the right side starting at the upper right corner as shown. Pin in place.

Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape - stop about 1/2 inch before you reach the bottom right corner of the front piece

Continue around the shape by aligning the side / bottom piece along the bottom edge of the front piece. Fold the side / bottom piece at the corner and wrap the bias tape around the layers. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape. Continue this process around to the other side of the front piece. When you reach the upper corner, trim the bias tape leaving about 1/4 inch excess.

To create the top of the vinyl pocket, first wrap bias tape around the right side (side to the right of the zipper pull) of the 18 inch zipper. Then, lay the top vinyl piece flat and align the end of the 18 inch zipper starting at the upper left corner of the top piece. Allow the end of the zipper to extend past the edge of the vinyl about 1/4 inch. Pin in place.

Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape stopping about 1/4 inch from the first corner. Then, continue around the top piece by bending the zipper around the corner and aligning the zipper with the edge of the vinyl - this will create a small fold in the zipper's edge / bias tape. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape. Continue this process around the other short side of the top piece - leave the back edge open.

Sew a seam back and forth a few times across the zipper at the far back corner of the top vinyl piece (where you ended the zipper). Trim the zipper leaving about 1/4 inch of excess.

Add the top of the pocket to the assembled bottom portion by first wrapping bias tape around the bottom edge of the zipper. Then, align the bottom edge of the top portion with the bottom edge of the bottom portion and pin in place. Working from inside the bag and using a zipper foot, sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape all the way around.

Now that the pocket is complete it is time to attach it to the lining piece. Lay the lining piece right side up. Cut a length of bias tape the same width as the back edge of the top flap. Then, wrap the bias tape around the back edge of the top flap and place the pocket on the opposite side of the lining from the mesh pocket (with the top flap facing the short end of the lining). Position the pocket with the top edge of the top flap 1 1/4 inch from the top edge of the lining and with the edges of the pocket aligned with the sides of the lining. Pin in place and sew a seam along the inner edges of the tape.

Next, so that the sides and back edge of the pocket will lie flat, make 1/2 inch cuts in the vinyl at the bottom corners. Then, measure and mark 9 1/4 inches down along each side of the lining starting from the top corners. Cut another length of bias tape the same width as the back edge of the bottom of the pocket. Wrap the tape around the back edge and align it with the marks you just made on the sides of the lining. Pin in place and sew a seam along the inner edges of the tape.

To prepare the strap for the snap closure, cut two pieces of fabric to 3 inches by 8 inches. Align the fabric pieces with the right sides together and pin in place. Sew a 1/4 inch seam along the sides and one end (leave one end open for turning). Turn the strap right side out and top stitch a 1/8 inch seam along the sides.

To add the snaps, measure and mark one inch down (and centered side to side) from the closed end.

Using a snap tool, add the button part of the snap at this mark.

12

Page 13: Women's Travel Toiletry Bag

Next, add another snap to the strap by measuring and marking two inches from the open end of the strap.

Add the inside part of the snap using the snap tool. Make sure that the snap faces down - this will ensure that the snaps will line up properly to create a loop for hanging.

Lay the outer shell portion (embroidered fabric) right side up. Working on the embroidered end, measure and mark the center of the top edge of the fabric by measuring and dividing by two. Then, measure and mark one inch down from the top edge starting at the center mark. Add another inside snap part at this mark - make sure the snap faces outwards. This is the snap that creates the closure for the bag.

To prepare the handle loops, cut four pieces of fabric to 3 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Fold the long sides together, wrong sides together, to meet in the center of the fabric.

Then, fold again so that the folded edges meet. Sew a seam right along the long edges of each piece.

Next, thread the loops through the rings on the handles and match up the ends of the loops. Sew a seam across the loops as close to the rings as you can get. Repeat this for all four loops.

Fold the short ends of the outer shell fabric over to the wrong side 1/2 inch. Sew a 1/4 inch seam along the folds.

Then, lay the ends of the loops of one of the handles on the backside of the embroidered end of the outer shell. Position the ends of the loops so that they extend about one inch down from the top edge. Center the loops by measuring equal distances from the outer edges of the loops to the outer edges of the fabric. Sew the loops in place by sewing a seams right along the top edge of the outer shell fabric.

Add the handle to the backside of the other end of the outer shell fabric by positioning the loops just as you did for the first handle. Also, add the strap for the closure centered in between the handle loops with the button side of the end snap facing down. Pin in place. Sew seams across the loops and the strap by again following along the top edge of the outer shell fabric.

Next, fold the short ends of the lining fabric over to the wrong side 1/2 inch and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the folds.

Lay the outer shell portion with the wrong side up. Align the lining / pocket portion on top with the wrong sides together and with the vinyl pocket on the same end as the strap closure. Pin along the short ends.

Sew a 1/4 inch seam along the short ends - make sure that the handles and the strap are lying flat and are out of the way of the needle.

Next, create a "pocket" in the bottom of the bag for the foam board. Sew a seam from side to side 1/4 inch from the bottom of the mesh pocket. Also, sew another seam from side to side right along the inside edge of the tape along the bottom edge of vinyl pocket.

Cut a piece of foam board to 8 1/2 inches by 3 1/4 inches using a craft knife and cutting pad.

Insert the board in the "pocket" you just created (slide it in between the outer shell and lining fabric).

To finish the sides of the bag, wrap bias tape around each side. Align all the layers together along the sides and wrap the tape around all the layers as you go - the outer shell, the mesh pocket, the vinyl pocket, and the lining. Pin in place and sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape and...

...when sewing past the bottom corners of the vinyl pocket, fold the corner towards the inside of the bag, and sew the seam.
