Design used: Ferdinand Rooster - Sm This design is also available in the following design pack: A Kickin' it Country Chickens Design Pack - Sm Finished size: 9 1/2 inches wide by 5 inches tall by 5 inches deep

First we will prepare the fabric for one side of the bag - we will embroider the design on this side. Draw a 10 inch wide by 5 1/2 inch high rectangle on the fabric (we are using a sturdy upholstery fabric). Leave a couple of inches of excess around the shape to make for easy hooping. With an air-erase pen, measure and mark the center of the shape by measuring along each side and divide by two. Draw lines connecting the marks. Where the lines meet is the center of the shape.

Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. Cut around the design to make it easy to place. Poke a hole in the center of the template and align it with the center mark on the fabric. Make sure that the design fits well within the shape - there should be at least one inch of space in between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with a bit of temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is right over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

After the design has finished, unhoop the fabric and trim away the excess stabilizer from the back of the embroidery.

Then, cut out the shape.

Next, cut out the remaining pieces for the outer shell of the bag using these dimensions: A. Side and bottom - 2 pieces: 10 inches by 5 1/2 inches B. Ends - 2 pieces: 5 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches C. Top pieces - 2 pieces: 10 inches by 5 inches D. Side pocket - one piece: 10 inches by 8 inches

Take the top pieces and side pocket piece and fold them, wrong sides together, with the long sides together. Sew a 1/8 inch seam along the folded edges of each piece.

Now we will create the side pocket. Align the 12 inch zipper with the folded edge of the side pocket piece (align the zipper pull with the upper left corner of the side pocket piece) Mark the zipper (at the upper right corner of the pocket piece) and sew a seam across the zipper at this mark. Trim the excess zipper about 1/4 inch from the seam.

Pin the folded edge of the pocket piece along the bottom edge of the zipper. Using a zipper foot, sew a seam right along the folded edge of the fabric.

Next, align the side pocket piece with the bottom of the side piece (there will be about a one inch space between the top edge of the zipper and the top edge of the side piece). Cut a piece of the bias tape to the length of the zipper. Wrap the tape around the top edge of the zipper and pin in place to the side piece. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the bias tape and also around the sides and bottom of the pocket piece.

Now it's time to assemble the bag! Align the embroidered side piece with the bottom piece with the right sides together. Make sure the top of the design faces in (this will insure that it will face upright later on) Insert the piping in between the two layers of fabric with the right side of the piping facing inside and the raw edge aligned with the outer edges of the fabric. Start the end of the piping at the right bottom corner of the embroidered side piece. Do not trim the piping just yet. Pin the layers in place and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the pinned edge only starting and stopping 1/4 inch from each corner.

Then, open the sewn pieces and lay them with the right sides facing up. Align one of the end pieces to the short end of the bottom piece (working clockwise from the first side piece) with the right sides together. The end piece should lie on top of the bottom piece as shown. Tuck the piping between the layers, pin in place, and sew and continue with a 1/4 inch seam starting and stopping 1/4 inch from each corner. Working clockwise, continue with this process with the remaining side (with pocket) and end piece. After the end piece is in place, trim the piping leaving about 1/4 inch of excess.

Now we will prepare the strap. Cut a piece of fabric to 10 inches wide by 3 inches high. Fold the long edges together, wrong sides together, to meet in the center of the fabric.

Then, fold the fabric again bringing the long folded edges together. Sew a seam right along the long folded edges.

Bring the ends of the strap together to form a loop and sew a seam along the ends to hold the loop in place.

Add the loop to the right side of one of the end pieces about one inch from the top edge. Allow about 1/4 inch of the end of the loop to extend past the side of the end piece and pin in place.

Next, align the side edges of the side and end pieces together with the right sides together. Pin in place and sew a 1/4 inch seam along all the pinned edges.

To prepare the top of the bag, align the folded edges of the top pieces with the 9 inch zipper. Pin in place and sew a seam right along the inner edges of the top pieces.

Unzip the zipper and align the top piece with the side / bottom portion of the bag with the right side of the top piece facing inside the bag. Start by aligning one of the short ends of the top piece with the top edge of one of the end pieces. Add the piping by starting at one corner and tucking the piping between the two layers (right side facing in, raw edge aligned with outer edges of fabric). Pin in place and sew a 1/4 inch seam. Continue with this process all around the top edge of the bag. When you are finished, trim the piping leaving about 1/4 inch of excess. Tuck this excess back inside the bag through the seam. Then, turn the bag right side out.

Now we will prepare the lining. Cut the pieces of the lining from the nylon using these dimensions: A. Sides and bottom - 3 pieces: 9 1/2 inches by 5 inches B. Ends - 2 pieces: 5 inches by 5 inches C. Top pieces - 2 pieces: 9 1/2 inches by 5 inches

Next, fold the top pieces long sides together and wrong sides together and sew a seam right along the folds.

To prepare the inside mesh pocket, cut a piece of the mesh to 8 inches by 5 1/2 inches. Cut a piece of bias tape to 5 1/2 inches to cover one short end of the mesh.

Wrap the tape around one of the short ends and sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape.

Next, fold the mesh so that the tape is about one inch from the other short end and pin in place.

Sew a 1/4 inch seam along each side between the top edges of the tape to the bottom fold. Turn the pocket right side out. Lay one of the side lining pieces with the right side facing up. Center the mesh pocket with the top edge of the side piece, pin in place, and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the top of the mesh pocket.

To assemble the lining, lay the bottom piece with the right side up. Align the mesh pocket side piece with the bottom piece with the right sides together and pin in place. Sew a 1/4 inch seam along the pinned edge.

Align the other side piece with the opposite side of the bottom pieces right sides together. Pin and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the pinned edge.

Align the end pieces with the bottom piece right sides together, pin and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the pinned edges.

Next, align the edges of the sides and end pieces together, pin in place, and sew a 1/4 inch seam along each edge.

Align the top pieces with the top edges of the assembled lining (the sides and end pieces), pin in place and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the pinned edges.

Insert the lining inside the bag. Align the inner edges of the top pieces of the lining with the inner edges of the zipper on the bag and pin in place. The edges of the lining should be about 1/4 inch from the teeth of the zipper.

Working from the inside of the bag and using a zipper foot, sew a seam right along the edges of the lining to attach it to the bag.
