The Valentine’s DayProgressive Dinnerwas a lot of fun andeven included a littlespirited driving onsome of the backroads south of Palm-

dale. You can read more about this anAlice Rivera’s event report on page 4.

We have 3 events coming up onApril 5th: the breakfast meeting in Lan-caster, the Zone 8 Festival of Speed atthe California Speedway and a shortafter breakfast tour to the Poppy Re-serve. I plan on going to the speedwayas they have a historic run group thisyear and there will be 917s and other

rare Porsches running at full song. Ihave never seen these Porsches on thetrack, but I have been told that it’ssomething you don’t want to miss! Thehistoric groups will be on the trackaround “mid-day.”

On April 19th I will be at theCamarillo Airport just east of Venturaoff the 101 freeway teaching at a GrandPrix Region autocross school (see adbelow). Jim Gude has suggested form-ing a caravan of members to attend theevent. If you plan to attend be sure toget your registration in as soon as pos-sible! There is a Zone 8 autocross thenext day where you can practice yournewly developed skills. There will alsobe instructors available at the auto-cross. Hope to see you there!

Our PCA globetrotters Rich andMary Ann Paré are going to the Por-sche Parade, are also planning to attendthe Porsche Escape in AlbuquerqueNew Mexico. My wife and I attendedthe first Escape a few years ago and wehad a great time! The Escape is a non-competitive event which includes din-ners, tours, and a car show. Registra-tion opens on April 15th so mark your

of you, Spridgets were not very reliableor durable but (fortunately) were veryeasy to repair. To overcome the manybreak downs, I carried a great selectionof spares as well as tools in the boot(trunk). My brother once asked why itrode a little low in the back so I poppedthe trunk lid to reveal a virtualcornucopia of spares; a gallon ofcoolant, several quarts of oil, brakefluid, SU Carburetor parts, a sparegasket set, fuel pump, water pump, thermostat, fuel filter, points, condenser, belts, hoses, and so on. Abig tool box rode between the backwheels.

One memorable day I was fullyjustified in hauling around mycollection. Whenever I wasn’tattending classes, I worked as a flat ratemechanic at my brother’s independentDatsun repair shop. One Spring Break Ifelt particularly flush with cash having

First and foremost I would like to thankJohn and Kathy Quick, Ed and ElaineFriend, and Richard and Sheila Semanafor opening their homes to us. Our thirdValentine’s Day progressive dinnerwas a success! The event started at theQuick’s home in Juniper Hills whereJohn and Kathy welcomed us with avery nice spread of appetizers and abeautiful view of the desert below theirhome.

The next home was the site for themain course. To get there most of ourmembers took a nice ride over Eliza-beth Lake road then down to 60th streetand arrived at the Friend’s home in

Lancaster. We dined on Hawaiian BBQChicken and Beef with side dishes ofmacaroni salad, white rice, and greensalad. The food was excellent! Theweather was so nice that some of ourmembers had the luxury of enjoyingand discussing our Porsches while out-doors. After dinner it was time to headto the Semana’s house for dessert.

A short drive across Lancaster andthe group arrived for a wonderful pres-entation of pies, cookies, chocolatecovered strawberries, coffee, and tea. Some of the gentlemen played poolwhile mixed company sat in the familyroom enjoying each others conversa-tion. During dessert we raffled off abeautiful basket to a lucky couple. Bypure coincidence I won, which in fun

caused everyone to think the raffle wasrigged… thank you Judy Snodgrass forpicking my name!

We also had four new members(Tim and Sue Hagner, Gordon Hansenwith his friend Alma) who joined us forthe day. I hope to see them at futureevents. Over all we had a very goodturn out with 26 guests. Once againthank you to all who opened theirhomes to us and thank you to everyonewho joined us for the day.

Why does my car do that?

How can I make my car do what Iwant it to?

This is just a problem Porsches have, right?

Before pilot candidates begin to flythey spend time in a classroom learningthe basic principles and properties offlight and airplanes. In this column, Ihope to cover topics that affect howvehicles respond in the same type ofapproach, as an understanding of somebasic principles may translate to im-proving mastery of your car on the roadand track.

The three questions above werefrequent queries I heard during a recentcar control clinic. In this first column Iwould like to address some basics ofvehicle dynamics: weight shifts, andbalance to hopefully answer these ques-tions. In future columns, I intend toexplore oversteer, understeer, drifting, cornering techniques, and how to adjustyour line on the track. If you havequestions or suggestions you’d likeaddressed feel free to e-mail me and Iwill try to answer them. In this articlewe need to cover some basic science tobegin.

As with everything in the physicalworld, our cars are governed by thelaws of physics. Newton’s First Law

(Inertia) states that objects in motionremain in motion and objects at restremain at rest unless acted upon by anoutside force (Miss E - that explainswhy I can never get around to cleaningout the garage - its against the Law!).Whether you drive a 997 GT3 RS, a356 or a Tucson City bus you directlycontrol the outside forces of the throt-tle, the brakes, and the steering. Grav-ity, wind resistance and the frictionbetween your tires and the road surfaceare also acting upon your vehicle. Ob-viously spoilers body shape and dam-age etc. can affect wind resistance, butwe’ll assume it’s largely beyond ourcontrol once we’re behind the wheel.Gravity is also beyond our control(except for Walt Harrington - I’m surehe had a gravity control device in hisold 911!). It’s the last item, the tractionof our tires, which we can modulate to

our advantage while driving.Traction is a function of the road

surface, the tire rubber compound andsurface area, and the pressure betweenthe tires and road. While we can’t con-trol the grip of the road surface, thereare conditions that will negatively af-fect it. Ice, snow, water, sand, gravel, debris, and cracks all deteriorate thequality of the road. For high perform-ance driving this means avoiding thedebris, sand, gravel, and“marbles” (chips of rubber from tires)to maximize the grip of the surface. Wecan address water and “the rain line” ata later time. As for our tires, a “slick”or similar tire with minimal voids be-tween tread blocks has more rubber incontact with the track, which translatesto more traction, all other things beingequal. If you were driving in snow,

(around the blanket full of parts) whileholding a bit of shrubbery in each hand. This may sound weird but we were acouple of college kids in the early 70sso it all somehow felt normal;nevertheless, I was sure that if we werein LA we would be arrested forsomething. As I pondered and scrappedgaskets, a huge Dodge rolled up(making a cloud of dust) and outstepped a very polite HighwayPatrolman. He walked up as I wasfrantically blowing dust off of theengine; he looked down at me and said“Are you guys all right” and I saidyeah, just fixing the car. He then said“You can’t fix that here, can you?” Ilooked up and said “why not” I can’tafford a tow. “What about your buddy”

good at the time but for some reason Ihave not made one in many years.

Paul had never worked on a carbefore so I asked him to kick back andrelax. I would take care of everythingand in fact I would enjoy doing it (OK Ilied). Once the engine cooled, I drainedthe remaining coolant into soda bottles, disconnected hoses and cables, pulledthe carbs, manifolds and finally thehead itself. With the new head safelysitting on the blanket with the rest ofthe cleaned parts - some distance fromthe mess - I was busily cleaning theblock and the exhaust manifold surfacearea. Paul had stripped to the waist andwas doing his rendition of a NativeAmerican dance of some kind. Hechanted “Ho Ka Hey Wah Nah WohNah Woh” as he danced in a circle

just overhauled a Datsun 2000Roadster. My old Sprite had 60,000miles on its 1275cc engine which wasway past what was expected for a valvejob. A low speed miss reminded methat failure was not far away, so I builtup another cylinder head. It was portedand polished with new valves andnewly cut valve seats. Not having timeto install it before returning to school, Itossed it in the trunk with the rest of myparts.

Shortly after returning to school; Imade a day trip to the Sierra NevadaMountains. My friend Paul (apromising young biologist) came alongand we planned to collect insects forour entomology class. Paul was aNative American and usually did notstand out in any way. But today hebraided his hair and wore a beadedhead band to protect his shaggy hairwhile riding in the open Spridget. I saidthat his get up made him look likeGeronimo to which he smuglyanswered “Good, he was a great man.”We happily set out in the little Spritewith two butterfly nets hanging overthe folded top, Paul looking likeGeronimo and me wearing one of thosefunny little English tweed flat caps; itwas an amusing sight. While drivingalong a lonely road in the foothills, coolant and steam started coming outaround the bonnet (hood). I pulledunder an oak tree and popped thebonnet, err… hood. A most miserablelittle hose had broken. The miserablelittle hose in question was between thehead and the block and the hose nipplesnearly touched. The only way toreplace that hose was to pull the head!Fortunately I probably had all that Ineeded fix it in the trunk, err… boot. Ispread a blanket on the ground andcarefully sorted out the parts and tools, yep, everything was there. Whilewaiting for the engine to cool Paul andI feasted on my college days travelstaple of bologna, Fritos and bean dipsandwiches slopped on Wonder bread.I came across that particular sandwichcombination while traveling with myfriends. We would chip in and buybologna, bread, chips and dip; hatingbologna, I would put all of theingredients together in one sandwichand choke it down. I thought it fairly

he said as Paul was still dancing andsinging, I replied “He is helping in hisown way.” He stared for a bit, lookedat the parts laying around, looked at theengine, looked at the butterfly nets andthen said that he would stop by in anhour or two to see how we were doingand what could be done to help us. Hewas a nice fellow but seemed verymuch in doubt of our ability to fix thedisassembled Spridget. Shortly after thePatrolman left, Paul stopped dancingand walked over to the car. I said “Whydidn’t you stop dancing when that copcame? I thought we were going to jailfor sure.” Paul answered “I couldn’toffend the spirits and never be ashamedof your culture man.”

The new head went on easily. Isoon had the valves adjusted, thecoolant topped off and it purred like akitten. We loaded up my spares, toolsand so on and were eating anotherbologna, Fritos and bean dip sandwich(now tainted with the taste of enginegrime) when the big Dodge rumbledup. The nice patrolman stepped outwith a big grin and said “You got itfixed I see” I said “yep” and wethanked him for looking out for us. Heasked “Did the dancing help?” Ianswered “absolutely.” He was stillstanding there as we pulled awayrunning the little Sprite through thegears and in no time (less than a quarterof a minute!) was up to its max cruisingspeed of 60 MPH. Paul laughed andsaid that the spirits smiled.

I don’t think I could swap thecylinder head of my 944 while sittingalongside the road; but I still have somefriends that might dance in circles as Ifix the car (joking of course). Thosewere simpler times and I miss them.

Thanks for Reading!

sand or mud, increasing the tread voiddepth increases the surface area contactas these soft surfaces push into thesevoids, hence mud & snow tires for yourSUV. The actual rubber compounditself is a crucial part of the tire’sgrip—imagine an old dried out tirewhich is hard and smooth versus thesoft gummy surface of a track tire onceit has heated up. This is why some use“R compound” tires on the track, asthey are a much softer, stickier rubber. In general, the lower the tread wearrating, the faster a tire will wear down, but the stickier it will be on the track.Tire width is somewhat dictated byyour car’s design, but clearly as wide atire as you can fit without rubbing willincrease the amount of rubber you haveon the road. Obviously, tire selectionand its influence is accomplished be-fore you get behind the wheel, but afterthe road surface and the tire factors aremanaged, we’re left with the last factor, the pressure between the tire and theroad. This is where a good driver usesvehicle dynamics to his or her advan-tage.

Remember Newton and his FirstLaw? The car’s inertia will resist theforces you apply with brakes, throttleand steering. You experience this as aperceptible leaning of your car oppositethe direction you are encouraging it togo. Push the throttle and the vehicleweight shifts to the rear, increasing theweight on the rear wheels. For a rearwheel drive vehicle, this is useful andreduces wheel spin as you accelerate. This is also why many of our cars havewider tires on the rear wheels to in-crease grip for acceleration. For a frontwheel drive, however, this weight shift

Ground School (Continued from page 6) moves the weight off the drive wheelsand may induce wheel spin or hop ifdone abruptly. In a similar way, whenyou apply the brakes, the weight of thecar shifts forward (and you do too, pushing you against your seat belt)applying more weight to the frontwheels. This is why most vehicles havelarger brakes in the front than the rear,as the front wheels apply most of thestopping force. When steering, the ve-hicle’s weight shifts towards the out-side wheels of the turn, improving theirgrip, as it shifts off the inside wheels, reducing their traction. In a perfectworld, the reduced grip experienced bysome wheels during these maneuverswould be exactly offset by the im-provement experienced by the other.Alas, this is not the case, with the mosttraction obtained when the car is atconstant speed in a straight line. Anychange will upset this balance and de-grade the total traction present. Yourcar’s suspension’s job is to keep all 4tires in contact with the road over un-even surfaces, and yet keep the car aslevel as possible. Themore lean experienced, the bigger the loss oftraction provided by thesum of all 4 tires, whichis why high profiletrucks won’t corner aswell as a go-cart. For us,the importance of this isthat the smoother youapply steering/throttle/brakes, the less it willupset the suspensionoverall, and the bettertraction you will have tocontrol the car. It alsomeans that if the weight

is shifted to the rear tires while youaccelerate there is less weight on thefront tires for steering. This is whyyour car will drift toward the outside ofthe turn as you accelerate out of a cor-ner, a phenomenon called “throttlesteering.” We’ll explore this morewhen we examine oversteer and under-steer.

One last facet of traction to con-sider before we move on is that there isa certain maximum traction available, and you can use that for accelerating, steering, or slowing, or a combinationof steering with either of the other two,up to that maximum. The more you usefor steering, the less is available forspeed changes and vice versa. If youexceed that maximum, your tires willbreak loose. This is why you’ll hearWendy Walker warning you against“braking and turning.” While advanceddrivers do this as “trail braking” yourisk loss of traction and control if notdone properly.

Now that your head is spinning, goclear it with a spirited drive and start

David Witteried wiggles through a slalom. For a fast run, being smooth so youdon’t upset your Porsche is important here. Photo by Rich Bessette.

A great way to learn is to have an instructor ride with you toexplain what is going on and what to do!

someone will step up and take over thejob. No experience is necessary butsome computer skills are required. Ihad never produced a newsletter beforetaking the job myself, so don’t be shy!

See you on the road!

Q I am a newbie at this, but Iwant to put 19” wheels on the

car plus have it lowered. Do you rec-ommend any springs? My buddy isafraid I will ruin the suspension bydoing this and he suggests I put 20”wheels instead and not lower the car.Which option do you suggest?

A The 20” rims are not recom-mended at all do to they are

not approved for use on the Boxster. They also do not have any approvedtires in 20” that would fit the car. Por-sche does not offer any other springsexcept what is standard for the PASMsuspension or the standard suspension.Should you have the PASM suspensionthe car already sits 10mm lower thanthe stock suspension. In either caseinstalling after-market springs is highlyinadvisable. The lower springs do notallow the proper control range of thestock shocks to be used and will dam-age them. The best option would be toincrease your rim and tire size to the19” and leave the suspension alone.

calendar if you want to attend. Highlyrecommended!

The first Zone 8 autocross of theseason was at the El Toro airport nearIrvine. Myself, and Rob Rossitto werethere representing Cal-Inland Region. This was the first autocross I've everbeen to where I got to watch my Por-sche race, but didn’t get to do timedruns myself… The morning started outgreat even though we had driventhrough a few rain showers on our waythrough LA the evening before. Thesun was shinning as I parked my trailernext to Rob who was in the process ofunloading his 928 off his trailer. Afterunloading, getting the car through tech,

Bumper Smiles (Continued from page 2) and getting myself registered; we gotreacquainted with some of our friendswe hadn’t seen since the last Zoneautocross. There were about 120 cars inthe field and Rob and I both had com-petition in our classes. The courseseemed very long, but was rather fastso lap times seemed kind of short andwe quickly cycled through the rungroups for the two practice sessions. Our new Zone 8 Autocross Chairman,Neil Heimburge, and a good friend ofmine came over and asked if he coulddrive my Porsche as he didn’t have histoday and he needed the event points. Iagreed but pointed out that my 1976911 didn’t have any turbos, huge tires, power anything, or traction control likeNeil’s 993 twin-turbo. As the afternoonprogressed a thunderstorm to the south-east slowly crept in our direction. Neilwas able to finish his timed runs butjust before my timed runs we had sev-eral lightning strikes in the vicinity sothe remaining sessions were canceled. So that is how my Porsche got to racewithout me!

As I mentioned in my January col-umn this will be my last year as thenewsletter editor. Production of thenewsletter is very important to the vi-tality of the club and I am hoping that
