INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICKMany people know St. Patrick's Day as a time to let their hair down and participate inthe often rowdy revelry that has become synonymous with the holiday. Parades andloud music as well as flowing drinks make Patty's Day a favorite for people of all ethnicbackgrounds. But revelers might be surprised to know that the holiday's namesake wasan interesting figure whose impact on the world can still be felt today.

* Though he is forever linked to the Emerald Isle, Saint Patrick was actually born in Eng-land, and his initial introduction to Ireland was anything but pleasant. That's becauseSt. Patrick was captured by pirates as a child and brought to Ireland, where he spentsix years in slavery. After escaping captivity, he eventually returned to Ireland as a mis-sionary.

* Saint Patrick's work as a Christian missionary incorporated some pagan beliefs towhich many natives of Ireland had previously subscribed. He combined those beliefswith the Christian sacrament, and the Celtic cross traces its origins to this combinationof pagan beliefs and Christianity.

* Despite growing up in a family with strong ties to organized religion, Saint Patrick him-self was not raised in a particularly religious household. Though his grandfather was amember of the clergy and his mother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours, SaintPatrick's childhood home was not especially religious nor was it one that placed a strongemphasis on education. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in life that his lack of formaleducation had long been a source of embarrassment for him.

* While in captivity, Saint Patrick tended sheep under a high priest of Druidism, a Pagansect that had considerable influence over Ireland at the time.Despite that, Saint Patrickbecame deeply devoted to Christianity during his captivity, when he became determinedto free the Irish from Druidism.

* After fleeing captivity, Saint Patrick said that the idea to flee came to him in a dream inwhich a voice promised him that, if he fled, he would safely find his way home to Eng-land. So he convinced sailors to let him board their ship. This was a ship those on boardwould soon abandon, eventually landing in France, where they wandered 200 miles in28 days. But true to his dream, Saint Patrick was eventually reunited with his family inEngland.

* Despite his determination to free the Irish from Druidism, Saint Patrick was initially metwith much resistance from Irish natives. But his persistence would eventually pay off,as he convinced a growing number of Pagan Druids that they were worshiping idolsunder a belief system that was ensuring their captivity and not their salvation

For most of us there are plenty of vegetable and flower seedlings available at the garden center to choose from in spring so you may not feel the need to start any seeds. However, there may be a tomato variety that you want to try that you’ve never seen available as a seedling, or an uncommon annual flower that you want to try out. In this case, you’ll need to start your own. “But how…and when do we start our seeds?” For instance, a tomato seed pack might say, “For best results, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting time.” The beginner will say, “Yeah, well what day is that?” The average last frost date for the Albany Airport is May 7th. That date seems wildly optimistic to me. We often get frosts after May 7th. For our area, I think May 15th - 20th makes more sense, and there’s no reason to rush planting only to risk a late frost. Tomatoes and peppers stall when temperatures go below 50°F, so waiting to plant them often results in an earlier harvest than from plants subjected to too many cold nights early in the season. In my garden in the Glenville Hills, I generally shoot for planting the week before Memorial Day. T he next step is to get a calendar and combine the information on the seed packs to come up with a logical schedule for starting our seeds indoors. First mark ‘Planting Week’ (May 15th-20th) on your calendar. Then mark the week previous to ‘Planting Week’ “1 week” meaning ‘one week before planting’. Mark the week previous to that “2 weeks” and so on until you’ve marked up to ’10 weeks’ before planting. 10 weeks before planting should end up being second week of March (6th - 12th). Now look at the information on the seed packs to see how many “weeks before planting” we need to get the seeds started indoors. For instance, here’s the info on the pack of eggplant seeds: Now that we’ve got a calendar custom made for our growing season, we can easily figure out when to start these seeds indoors...sometime in mid-March. You can tape the seed packs to your calendar on the week that they need to get sown or just write them into the correct week on the calendar. There are a few, like onions and leeks, that need to get started 10 weeks before our frost-free planting date. The real flurry of seed starting occurs between 6 and 8 weeks before planting. On the calendar, that’s the last couple of weeks of March and the first week of April. There are some seeds that only need to be started a only two or three weeks prior to planting week, like theses zinnias, so you really need to read the directions on the seed packs. You might be thinking, “Why not start them as early as possible so the seedlings will be further along when I plant them?” If you have a greenhouse you might get away with that. Most of us are starting our seeds on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights. Space is at a premium and the larger plants crowd each other and get leggy as they compete for the light. Leggy, spindly transplants will struggle to survive once they get outside. It’s better to have smaller, sturdier plants when it’s time to put them in the ground, so follow the directions on the seed pack and you’ll have the right size plant at the right time. There are plenty of vegetables that don’t need to wait for “planting week”to get started from seed directly in the garden. Peas seeds like to get planted at the beginning of April as soon as the soil can get worked. Spinach, chard, radishes, potatoes (from seed potatoes) and many others can also be planted before our “frost free” planting date in mid-May. Indeed, most of what we call cool weather crops can produce 2 crops per season; one from an early sowing for early summer harvest and another mid-summer sowing for a fall crop. This is something that new gardeners need to understand. I think many new gardeners have the belief that you “plant in spring and harvest in the fall”. This is true for some vegetables like potatoes and some of the larger tomato types. The real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from these crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make you garden pay maximum dividends. Thanks for the read.

REAL INSIGHTS FROM REALTORS(NAPSI)—For many people, buying a home is a goal they aspire to achieve and oftenthe most significant financial decision they'll make in their life. If you're among them, consider this advice: Given the mass amounts of information, data and tools available,it's critical to work with a professional who can help you make sense of it all. During thehome buying or selling process, it's wise to follow these tips:

• Work with a local expert. Realtors are the most trusted resources for up-to-date, com-prehensive and accurate real estate information when it comes to navigating each stepof the complex home buyers process. More than four out of five recent home buyersand sellers used a real estate professional, according to the National Association of Re-altors.

• Learn about the area. Looking to move to a new neighborhood? Chances are you'reunfamiliar with some characteristics of the area, such as traffic patterns on busy streetsand the best schools within the district. Realtors have a finger on the pulse of each mar-ket where they do business. They're responsible for knowing the nuances to considerbefore buying a home and can leverage that expertise to help you.

• Seek accurate information. Many websites offer to help potential home owners find theperfect house. Some people have even suggested the Internet will eventually make buy-ing a home as easy as buying an airline ticket or a stock certificate. However, consumersoften complain that some of the information provided on these sites is either out of dateor inaccurate, creating confusion and frustration.

A Realtor, on the other hand, can provide valuable counsel, discuss listings, show youhomes in person, negotiate on your behalf and help you stay focused on the emotionaland financial issues that are most important. That may be one reason 88 percent of buy-ers in 2013 used a real estate agent, up from 69 percent in 2001.

PROTECTING AGAINST SUN DAMAGE WHILE IN A CAR(NAPSI)—The average American spends more than 101 minutes a day in a car. Unfor-tunately, what many drivers and passengers fail to realize is that when they are in a car,not all the danger they face is on the road.

Both drivers and passengers are often exposed to harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, par-ticularly from the side windows of the cars in which they ride.

“Damage from certain kinds of ultraviolet rays is cumulative,” says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, vice chair of the dermatology department at St. Louis University. “These rays penetratedeep into the skin and can silently accelerate the aging process, cause wrinkles andeven skin cancer.”

Fortunately, adding a UVA-blocking film or tint to car windows can be an effective way tohelp block damaging rays and protect yourself while you drive.

For example, a range of window film options, sold under the brand name LLumar, provideUV protection. There’s even a clear film that appeals to those who do not want a darkerwindow appearance, or where the use of dark films is prohibited by state law. When ap-plied over ordinary automotive glass, this film’s virtually invisible protection blocks morethan 99 percent of harmful UV rays.* LLumar window film acts as “sunscreen”—offeringdaily sun protection with a one-time application.
