By Shanee EdwardsL.A.’s Westside is known

for its sunny weather and beach culture, but summertime provides the extra warmth and freedom to break out of your usual routine. Whether you’re looking to get more exercise, relax or simply spend time outdoors, here are 10 fun activities for you to explore.

Know Thy SelfThis gorgeous landmark is

the site of Lake Santa Ynez, the only authentic spring-fed lake to be found in the city of Los Angeles. The Pacific Palisades lake is teeming with swans, ducks and turtles and served as an early film location for Inceville studios in the 1920s, before becoming home to the Self-Realization Fellowship. A picturesque windmill house is a reproduction of an authentic 16th century Dutch windmill and is nestled amongst the lily pads and lotus flowers, adding to the serene atmosphere. Come on the first Friday of the month for a one-hour guided

meditation or take a tour of the many gardens that include exotic orchids. Parking is free and the garden and pond are closed Mondays. Call 310-454-4114 for more details.

No Fear of FlyingFly high over the Santa

Monica Pier as you learn how to navigate the sky while holding onto a trapeze bar. Below the aerialists is a safety net and each student is connected to a safety cable, guided by an instructor. Once students have mastered basic “flying,” they are then allowed to “be caught” by the hands of an instructor, swinging on a second trapeze. The experience is an adrenaline rush that inspires bonding amongst the students. A two-hour flying trapeze class costs $57 and reservations can be made online at http://losangeles.trapezeschool.com.

Animal Style Flight PathThe patio at the Westchester

In-N-Out Burger makes for fun plane watching as the

jets land nearly over patrons’ heads at nearby Los Angeles International Airport. Are you a vegetarian? No worries – order the “wish” burger, which is made of all the yummy fixings just without the meat patty. Most Angelinos know about the famed “secret” menu where you can get your burgers and fries “animal-style,” but did you know it applies to beverages as well? In-N-Out will happily swirl your shake to make a “black and white,” include vanilla, chocolate and strawberry to make a “Neapolitan,” or even create a “root beer float,” by adding vanilla soft-serve to your soda.

Venice-style SunsetLooking for a romantic

way to take in the Pacific sunset with your loved one? A gondola ride from Gondolas D’Amour will leisurely row you and that special somebody around Marina del Rey. The ride includes Italian music, candles and pillows and also provides roses, chocolates,

appetizers and an ice bucket in case you want bring your own bottle of bubbly to sip while on the water. You’re likely to see pelicans and seals snacking near live-bait tanks and you’ll glide past Fisherman’s Village. A one-hour ride for two costs $140. Visit www.gondolasdamore.com for more details.

The Artist’s Life for MeThis art gallery complex was

once a stop for the Red Line trolley that ran from downtown Los Angeles to what is now the Santa Monica Pier beginning in 1875. Named for the Bergamot flowers that used to grow in the

area over a century ago, Bergamot Station is now home to dozens of world-class artists. Grab a “Mexican Mocha” at the Bergamot Café and get inspired as you stroll through the many galleries. There is no admission fee, but the complex is closed Sunday and Monday. Visit www.BergamotStation.com for more details.

Take a HikeTemescal Gateway Park is located

just off Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades and offers the Temescal Canyon Loop, which is 2.6 miles long. Full of pretty sites that include a white footbridge and seasonal waterfall, there are other trails attached to the loop if you are looking to extend your hike. Keep an eye out for blue-bellied western fence lizards peaking out from the chaparral. Parking is free along Sunset Boulevard and $7 inside Temescal Park.

Get Some Egg on your FaceEver wanted to bake your own

buttery brioche or impress your friends with a perfect chocolate soufflé? Elle A Cooking School in Brentwood will give you hands on instruction and foolproof recipes to take control of your kitchen. Classes are limited to four students who will immerse themselves in French country-style cuisine. Check out their class schedule at www.elleacooking.com or you can arrange for a private lesson in the comfort of your own home – Elle A Cooking School will arrange for all cooking equipment and ingredients to be brought to your house. Classes start at $85 and gift certificates are available.

Rollerblade the Marvin Braude Bike PathWho’s Marvin Braude? Braude was a

member of the Los Angeles City Council for 32 years and dedicated his public life to preserving the Santa Monica Mountains. The 22-mile bike path that begins at Will Rogers State Beach and ends at Torrance Beach was renamed after Braude to celebrate his legacy. Why not grab some rollerblades and hit the path on a sunny afternoon? You’ll take in the beautiful Pacific Ocean nearly the entire way and get some great exercise.

A Festival Fit for a LordThe Festival of Chariots is an annual

parade of decorated four-story-high chariots from Santa Monica to Venice. The event celebrates the Hindu god Lord Jagannath, the “Lord of the Universe.” This festival has free entertainment, Indian food and exhibits that showcase Indian culture. Set to take place Sunday, August 4, the parade begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and moves south on Main Street toward the Windward Plaza on the Venice Boardwalk. Be sure to bring your camera! Visit www.FestivalOfChariots.com for more information.

A Laughing MatterEver been curious to know if you have

what it takes to perform comedy without a script? M.I. Westside Comedy Theater on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica offers beginning improvisational comedy classes with their veteran performers who teach you the basic rules of improv, like “Yes, and…” Need some inspiration first? M.I. Westside Comedy Theater also offers plenty of live shows where the audience may participate by calling out “suggestions.” A six-week intro to improv class begins Monday, June 3. The class includes a chance to perform and costs $285. More details are available at www.westsidecomedy.com.

“ The menu is about what you’d expect — ribs, chicken and sausage, some side dishes that go with barbecued anything, and several desserts including pies. . . .Morfia’s has a real brick smoker, crucial for getting the tradition-al product. Real Texas barbecue has a chewy exterior called bark, a rosy ring where the smoke has penetrated the meat, and an interior that is moist and tender but not mushy.. . .Morfia’s doesn’t serve alcohol but has an eclectic selection of soft drinks. . . .There are many des-sert choices at Morfia’s and they’re all made in-house, so there’s a good chance you’ll find something you like.” — Excerpts from restaurant review by Richard Foss
