The ‘Seniors & Elders Guide tothe Westside’ was produced byand for seniors on the Westsideof Vancouver in an effort tobuild community and developresources. Through boththe community consultationprocess and the final guide,the Seniors & Elders MappingProject supports communitydevelopment throughmeaningful dialogue andresources on topics that matter.

The Mapping Project broughttogether diverse seniorspopulations, including KitsHouse Seniors Drop-InProgram, Musqueam Elders,South Granville Seniors CentreLatin Seniors Outreach Programand Kitsilano CommunityCentre Seniors Committee,around such topics as:

The BuildingWelcoming & InclusiveNeighbourhoodsInitiative (BWIN)

The Building Welcoming andInclusive Neighbourhoods(BWIN) project is a 3 yearinitiative funded by the Provinceof British Columbia that exploresthe role of NeighbourhoodHouses in building communitycapacity by encouraging

inclusion and building on B.C.’scultural diversity. This project will explore the leadership roleof neighbourhood houses inthe Lower Mainland in buildingcommunity capacity to be welcoming to all and to addressracism and social exclusion increative and responsive ways.

Specific KitsilanoNeighbourhood House BWIN

initiatives include the SeniorsMapping Project, CommunityPotlucks, Youth Initiatives,Welcoming CommunitiesSteering Committee, SpecialEvents and Volunteer & PolicyDevelopment.

Finding Home: BelongingMeaning and DialogueProgram

Finding Home: Belonging

Meaning and Dialogue isa neighbourhood baseddialogue program thatsupports communities andindividuals to foster a senseof belonging, build inclusivecommunities and strengthen values-based problem solvingskills. From 2007 to 2008,Finding Home collaborated with the Environmental Youth Alliance and KitsilanoNeighbourhood House on the Youth Asset Mapping Project.In 2008 to 2009, Finding Homecollaborated with the JusticeInstitute of British Columbia andKitsilano Neighbourhood Houseon program development,outreach and facilitation for theSeniors and Elders MappingProject. About The Seniors & Elders Mapping Project

In the fall of 2008, over 100 Seniors & Elders on the Westside participated inworkshops to identify and discuss community strengths & resources, using the ‘FindingHome’ model, developed by Jessie Sutherland. Information collected was used tocreate a ‘Guide to the Westside’ for community members, seniors’ organizations & government agencies.

 “Itwasnotedthatinsomeperiodsthe(m-uh-th-kwi)grassourished,andinsomeperiodsitcouldscarcelybefound.Itwasalsonotedthatinsomeperiodsourpeoplewouldourishandinsomeperiodsthepopulationwoulddwindle,perhapsbyplagueorwar.Itwasinthisway

Wearetraditional(h-un-q-uh-mi-n-uhm)speakingpeopleandhavedescendedfromtheculturalgroupknowastheCoastSalish.Ourpeoplemovedthroughoutourtraditionalterritoryusingtheresourcesthelandprovidedforshing,hunting,trappingandgathering,tomaintaintheirlivelihood.Today,theMusqueampeoplestillusetheseresourcesforeconomicandtraditionalpurposes.

 AlthoughametropolitancityhasdevelopedintheheartofMusqueamterritory,ourcommunitymaintainsstrongculturalandtraditionalbeliefs.Ourcommunityhistoriansandeducatorsteachandpassonourhistorytoourpeople,whichhasalwaysbeenthewayofourpeople,tokeepourcultureandtraditionsstrong.

Todayourpopulationourishesandweareastrongcommunityofoveronethousandmembers.Weliveonaverysmallportionofourtraditionalterritory,

knownastheMusqueamIndianReserve,locatedsouthofMarineDrivenearthemouthoftheFraserRiver.
