Welcome!

The Sun Prairie Area School District is pleased to offer Summer School Enrichment courses for students currently in Grades 4K – 4. Students whose homeschool is Creekside, Horizon, Royal Oaks, or Westside will register for classes at the Westside location. Registration for Enrichment Courses featured in this course guide will begin at 8:00 am on April 15 – April 29, 2013. Registration will be done online at: http://www.sunprairie.k12.wi.us/ss_information.cfm If you do not have access to a computer or would like some help with registration, computer access is available at your neighborhood school, the district office, or the public library. Now is the time to look through this guide and check out the great courses being offered this summer.

Key Information

• When registering for classes, please use your current year grade.

• Transportation is based on each student’s home address. To be eligible for transportation, a student must live more than one mile from the summer school location. Transportation must be requested at the time of registration.

• Breakfast will be available at 8:00 am for students attending the 8:30 am class.

Grades 2-4 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Do you like to play board games? Would you like to learn strategies to outwit your opponent(s)? Would you like to create your own unique board game? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you will love Board Game Strategies!

Grades K-1 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: You will study Eric Carle books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Busy Spider, and learn about the science behind the insects in the books! There will be many fun craft projects to go with the bugs in the books. It will be a creepy crafty crawly good time!

Grades 2-4 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Would you like to learn how to create your own movie? In this class you will research a topic of your choice, find pictures and music, and add your own voice to create a movie which you will burn onto a compact disc to take home to share with your family and friends.

Grades K-2 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $15.00 Description: Clay is an exciting and magical material. At Clay Camp you will learn the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring your creativity! A wide variety of ceramic techniques will be taught: shaping clay into Pinch Pots, designing and constructing Slab Projects, building unique Coil Vessels, and Clay Decoration. Clay Camp is a hands-on experience.

Grades 3-4 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $15.00 Description: Clay is an exciting and magical material. At Clay Camp you will learn the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring your creativity! A wide variety of ceramic techniques will be taught: shaping clay into Pinch Pots, designing and constructing Slab Projects, building unique Coil Vessels, and Clay Decoration. Clay Camp is a hands-on experience.

Grades K-2 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $15.00 Description: Do you ever wish you could take a sneak peek behind the scenes of some of your favorite childhood stories? In this class, you will be introduced to the artwork of famous children’s book illustrators. You will draw inspiration from Eric Carle, Lois Elhert, and many more. You will explore various art making techniques, such as drawing, painting and collage to create your own masterpieces.

Grades K-2 10:15 – 11:45 am No Fee Description: If you like to be active and play games, then this is the class for you. You will be active throughout the summer in this class. You will learn different skills and play various games such as competitive games, leisure games, board games, and some individual sports. A few of the games you will participate in are: soccer, tennis, basketball, hockey, board games, scooters, and much more!

Grades 3-4 8:30 – 10:00 am No Fee Description: If you like to be active and play games, then this is the class for you. You will be active throughout the summer in this class. You will learn different skills and play various games such as competitive games, leisure games, board games, and some individual sports. A few of the games you will participate in are: soccer, tennis, basketball, hockey, board games, scooters, and much more! .

Grades 1-3 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Do you like books with female main characters? Do you enjoy going on adventures with Thea Stilton, Ivy & Bean, Katie Kazoo or the American Girl characters? Do you like to learn about real girls/women who have changed the world? If so, then this is the class for you! You will read about, explore, discuss, and reflect on what it means to be a confident, kind, responsible, and courageous girl. You will also write your own stories/poems and create art that reflects your own girl power style!

Grades 3-4 8:30 – 10:00 am or Fee: $10.00 Description: You will explore each of the five elements of Hip- Hop. You will use the knowledge gained from your exploration to choreograph a final performance to share with the community.

Grades 3-4 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Learn about great leaders in history and the language of leadership. Practice various leadership skills through fun and engaging activities. Learn how to put your fantastic ideas into reality by planning and developing a project. Have fun discussing important topics with other student leaders!

Grades 2-4 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Relieve history with this hands-on Laura Ingalls Wilder study! You will read many Laura Ingalls Wilder books, do many pioneer crafts and projects, map the route Laura’s family took, learn about life in pioneer times, participate in a Pioneer Day Celebration, sew your very own mini quilt, pioneer bonnet or suspenders and more! This course is perfect for the Little House on the Prairie fanatic or a student who loves history.

Grades K-1 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Have you ever wanted to go on a safari through Africa? This will be an adventure as you learn about African animals and the lifestyle of the people. You will read books, sing songs, make crafts, and learn the language of Swahilli. Come along as we tour the Seringeti in Tanzania.

Grade 4K 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Each week you will focus on a different camping critter (ex. fish, bugs) in order to learn the alphabet, letter sounds, numbers, and some hands-on science. The daily routine includes a story time, a directed reading or math activity, a music/game time, and a free choice center activity. Note: This course runs six weeks (June 17 – July 25)

Grades 2-3 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Explore the oceans of the world through books and experiments. You will read about various ocean animals and create a 3D model. You will research salt water vs. fresh water. Our biome study of the ocean will include various experiments and craft projects to enhance your ocean exploration.

Grades 2-4 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Calling all doodlers! Would you like to draw cartoon characters and simple comic strips following easy step-by-step directions? If so, this class is for you! You will also study comic books, comic strips, and on-line videos to learn varying drawing styles.

Grades 3-4 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $15.00 Description: Ever wonder how artists turn trash into treasure? In this class, you will have the opportunity to explore less conventional art materials to create works of art. You will draw upon your creative juices and learn how to transform art material into two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art.

Grades 2-4 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Learn the basic elements of sewing and complete a variety of hands-on sewing projects during this three week course. You will learn a variety of sewing stitches, learn how to thread a needle, follow sewing directions in a sewing kit and create many projects of your own. At the end of this class you will have many sewing projects to keep including either a stuffed animal or a large pillow (depending on the costs and availabilities of the materials and number of students in the class).

Grades K-2 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Join Sports Fundamentals to get a chance to learn and tone such skills as proper running form, correct throwing techniques, and tricks to ball handing. You will learn and review the fundamentals of sports from basketball to football to soccer in both a gym and outdoor setting. Description: Sing! Sing! Sing! If you love to sing, come join the Summer Choir. This course is designed to review and build upon the music concepts explored during elementary general music classes. You will also learn about influential singers from history and explore songs from different genres. This course will help create good singing habits. The course will conclude with a musical presentation!

Grades 1-2 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Dive into wild and wacky adventures with this hands-on Amelia Bedelia character study! You will read many Amelia Bedelia books, create crafts and projects, participate in a Character Dress Up celebration, and design your very own memory scrapbook to always remember Amelia Bedelia! This course is perfect for the Amelia Bedelia fanatic or a student who has a vivid imaginative and loves to laugh.

Grades 3-4 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Ever wonder what it would be like to take those amazing rides on the magic school bus with Ms. Frizzle and her class? Well we may be lacking a magic school bus, but we are sure to provide fun and excitement as you learn about the extraordinary human body. You will examine and explore fascinating facts about the human body to promote lifelong health and fitness. Hands on experiments and demonstrations are provided using models of skeletons, brain, heart, muscle, lungs, and human torso along medical equipment such as stethoscopes, heart rate monitors and microscopes. Students will also be able to explore literature and internet resources to find answers to questions kids have about the body. This course will primarily focus on the nervous, sensory, skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and immune systems in regards to benefits of exercise and other healthy habits, along with harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and drug use, inactivity and poor nutrition.

Grades K-2 8:30 – 10:00 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Learn about beads from all around the world, and how to make your own necklaces and bracelets! You will learn how to string beads, bend wire, and make colorful bead combinations. You will use a variety of beads, including pendants and beads that you made on your own with clay and wire! We will also learn how to make beaded animals, friendship bracelets, and braiding/weaving techniques.

You will explore with the characters in the Magic Tree House as they go on adventures. Research and discuss the facts learned from these adventures and connect them to social studies and science! You will enrich your reading comprehension in this “book club” class!

Grades K-3 8:30 – 10:00 am or 10:15 – 11:45 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Learning Sign Language has never been more fun! You will play games, sing songs, and watch great DVDs to learn how to communicate using your hands. Learn about Deaf Culture, hearing loss, and how you hear. If you've taken the class before, come and learn some new things and make new projects. You will get a booklet of signs and will make a special project with your name using signs. Don't just say it, Sign it!

You and your friends have so much to share about your family traditions, traditional clothing, traditional foods, and language. You will be covering just a few of the cultures you may have had in your classroom. Examples of those being covered are Mexican culture, Hmong culture, Norwegian culture, Indian culture (from India), and Korean culture. You will read books about these cultures, have guest speakers, do various projects, and of course make some food! So get those passports ready, they will be provided the first day, and prepare to travel through your classroom and learn more about one another!
