But if we do not spend time with it, if we do not sit with it, ponder it, and ingest it, how can it become a part of us? How can it change us and mold us into the disciples Christ seeks? This morning (or afternoon or evening, depending on when this reaches you), I want to encourage us (that includes me!), to be intentional about finding time to sit with God’s Word. There are times it will challenge us, times it will confuse us, times it will make us stark raving mad! (Hint: it’s supposed to!). But all times, when we sit with it, we will find that it becomes a part of us, and thusly, we become part of God’s wonderful kingdom, becoming agents of Jesus who are called to minister to a world that is broken, made whole only through his love and mercy. WESTERN SPIRE

October 2017

“The words of Jesus… can support us, encourage us, and give us life even when everything around us speaks of death.”

~Henri Nouwen, Bread for the Journey

Friends in the Spirit,

This morning I received some words (printed above) that were both inspiring and convicting.

October 1st marks one year since I began serving as your pastor. On the one hand, it feels like the year

has flown by! A year?! How is that possible?! Yet at the same time, we have done so much and grown in our

relationships, that I also think, ‘It’s only been one year?!’

One of the things I struggle with is taking time for personal prayer and devotion. Confession time: there

is always something else to do, so taking a few minutes to sit and be present with the Word of God sometimes

takes a back seat. But those times are so important, so crucial to grounding us in our ministry and mission, that

when we do not take those times, we suffer for it.

So when I opened up one of my devotionals this morning, Bread for the Journey, by Henri Nouwen, I

found words that challenged me to do just that: take time with scripture, and just let it speak to me. He goes on

to say that, “Jesus words are food for eternal life. They do much more than give us ideas and inspiration. They

lead us into the eternal life while we are still being clothed in mortal flesh. When we keep close to the word of

Jesus, reflecting on it, ‘chewing’ on it, eating it as food for the soul, we will enter even more deeply into the

everlasting love of God.”

The world around us is in pain. Hurricanes churn up the oceans at a pace I’m not sure has been seen in a

long time; wildfires in the west continue to eat up their surroundings leaving devastation in their wake; just

yesterday a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Mexico. Violence, war, and the threat of war looms over so many

nations, including ours. “Everything around us speaks of death.”

Yet we cling to a Word that speaks hope; resurrection; promise… life!

But if we do not spend time with it, if we do not sit with it, ponder it, and ingest it, how can it become a

part of us? How can it change us and mold us into the disciples Christ seeks?

This morning (or afternoon or evening, depending on when this reaches you), I want to encourage us

(that includes me!), to be intentional about finding time to sit with God’s Word. There are times it will

challenge us, times it will confuse us, times it will make us stark raving mad! (Hint: it’s supposed to!). But all

times, when we sit with it, we will find that it becomes a part of us, and thusly, we become part of God’s

wonderful kingdom, becoming agents of Jesus who are called to minister to a world that is broken, made whole

only through his love and mercy.

Always in grace and peace, ~Pastor Kyle

A special thank you to Patricia Dlugosh for her sincere commitment to the care of the church’s defibrillator. Every month she inspects the parts to determine if a replacement is necessary. When needed, Patricia will take care of the replacement as soon as possible. We appreciate her dedication to this important device in our church. Reminder--- The defibrillator is located in Fellowship Hall in the south west corner near the door. Sally Chase

Greetings one and all,

As Canal Town days come and go and the rhythm of the fall is in full swing, so is our woman’s circle schedule. It is with great pleasure that we extend an invitation to you all to come join us in the parlor on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:30 pm for a gathering of insight, prayer, fellowship and a delightful desert.

Jan Taylor and Randy Kennard will be leading the program with the support and participation of all. We are asking everyone who attends and also those who may not be able to attend to donate a birthday kit for the food pantry.

The Birthday Kit is comprised of a cake, frosting, balloons, plates, and napkins with the theme of male or female. This was the brain-child of Wilma R. Since these kits have been offered in the food pantry, they have enriched the birthday celebration for scores of children in our area.

We hope to see one and all of you come October 11th.

Warm regards,

Randy K.

Your Property Team would like to remind you that we have a monthly point person on call. If you spot an

urgent issue that needs attending, please contact the appropriate person rather than the person you may have

reached out to in the past.

Thank you! We appreciate all the members of our congregation being eyes and ears for our facility.

Greetings from the Fellowship Team

• Western Horizons

As a long time tradition in October the Church (that is all of you) will once again celebrate our 50 plus year

members with a Pot Luck dinner following worship on October 15th. This year Fellowship will be cooking a

meat dish (Ham and / or Chicken) to go with your dish to pass.

So break out your culinary skills and whip up something yummy to share with your Church family on the 15th

of October! Fellowship will also be providing dessert and refreshments.

• Hanging of the Greens

This year Hanging of the Greens is scheduled for November 26th following worship. We are asking you to bring

an ornament for our tree in fellowship hall and to help decorate as we did last year. Many hands make lite

work!

Along with that ornament, please bring a dish to pass for a nice lunch. This will be a great opportunity for

sharing your Thanksgiving stories. Hope to see you there!

Welcome Pastor Bob Ike!

On Sunday, September 17th, we officially welcomed Bob Ike to our church as he will be joining us in a pastoral

role! Most of us know Dr. Ike as the Superintendent of Pal-Mac schools, but something you may not know, is

that he has been a student at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan for a couple of years now. As

he continues to study and discern what God’s calling for ministry in his life is, he has entered the time when he

needs to find practical learning experience in a congregation. Our church is going to be that place for him!

Over the next three months, Pastor Bob will be working in the area of pastoral care, both by actively engaging

with those in our congregation who are in need, as well as providing opportunities for us to think about our

future plans and wishes. Stay tuned for more!

Please join me in welcoming Pastor Bob to our congregation, and keep him in prayer as he continues to listen

for God’s voice.

Western Horizon Sunday Save the date! October 15, 2017

The Fellowship Committee will be hosting the Western Horizon Sunday celebrating our faithful servants who joined the Western Presbyterian Church 50 years ago. Also recognized are those who have been past 50 year members.

We will gather after worship and share a Pot Luck dinner. We ask everyone to join us as we celebrate with our 50-year members and their families.

Please bring a dish to share with your church family and your table service. Fellowship will be cooking a meat dish (Ham and/or Chicken) to go with your dish to pass. Beverages and dessert will be provided by the Fellowship Committee.

Addition to WPC 2017 Fall Rummage Sale

Summer is over and fall is here and with it comes the WPC fall rummage sale. This fall it is scheduled for

Thursday-Saturday, October 19-21, 2017, with set-ups on Monday-Wednesday, October 16-18, 2017. Please

mark your calendars.

As always, many volunteers are needed. It begins with donating your great stuff, to helping with the setups,

working during the sale, as well as helping with the tear down and cleanup once the sale ends. If you are

willing to volunteer, it would be greatly appreciated if you would let me know as soon as possible. You may

contact me via email or give me a call and leave a message if I am unavailable. As in the past, I will also begin

contacting WPC members a week or two before the sale in an effort to recruit volunteers.

Our decision a few years ago to start selling donated baked goods at our rummage sales has been a great

success. I thank everyone who has provided us with their delicious baked goods in the past for this add-on. It

has helped generate much needed additional funds and is now a permanent feature at our rummage sales. I

look forward to receiving your donated baked goods on Wednesday, 10/18/17 for this fall’s rummage sale.

Additionally, as mentioned to you last spring I had noticed several churches were selling takeout bowls of hot

soup besides selling baked goods at their rummage sales. After speaking with individuals from these churches

and getting confirmation from them all that the addition of selling soups was a good money maker for them, I

feel we should give it a try.

So, I would like to sell hot soup this October at our fall rummage sale and see how it goes, but I need your

help. Do you have a favorite soup recipe you would like to make and donate it to our soup sale?

Probably the most efficient would be to bring your soup in a crockpot. Please let me know before the rummage

sale begins if you do plan to donate soup. You may deliver it to the WPC kitchen on Wednesday, 10/18/17,

and we will store it in the WPC refrigerator overnight and reheat it the next morning or you can bring your soup

to the church at 8:30 am on Thursday morning, 10/19/17, before our rummage sale begins that day.

Thanks, everyone. I look forward to us once again having another successful rummage sale.
