A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

For this Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus continues to describe the Kingdom of Heaven in three short parables. Like last Sunday, Jesus once again interprets the parables for his disciples.

All three parables use ordinary experiences to describe different aspects of the Kingdom of Heaven. The first parable is longer and more detailed than the other two, and it alerts us to the two-fold reality of the Kingdom of Heaven. First, the beginnings of the Kingdom of Heaven can be found in this world. Second, the fruition of the Kingdom of Heaven will not be realized until the final judgment. In the meantime, only God, in the final judgment, will distinguish the fruits of the Kingdom of Heaven and offer its reward.

The second and third parables call our attention to the abundance that will result from the first beginnings of the Kingdom of Heaven. Just as a mustard seed—the smallest of all seeds—will become like a large bush, so too God will bring his Kingdom to full bloom. As a small amount of yeast will leaven the entire batch of bread, so too God will bring about the expansion of his Kingdom. In each case, the image is of the superabundance that God brings out of even the smallest of signs of the Kingdom.

Contained within these parables are also words of caution. Like in the parable of the sower, we were warned against judging others. To judge and uproot the “weeds” prematurely will also harm the wheat. The final judgment rests with God alone. In the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast, we are consoled by the message that God can work wonders and produce an abundance of fruits from even the smallest beginnings of the Kingdom of Heaven.

PS- I want to thank all our parishioners for your prayers and cooperation during this past week when we had to suspend daily and weekend Masses. Fortunately, it was not a Covid case, but it is always better to err on the side of caution. We will resume our Phase 2 scheduling of Masses as before.

PSS- Be sure to stop by and see the 40 Baskets and 5 Specialty Items for the St. Mark Corona Care Fundraiser Silent Auction in the windows of the Parish Hall. You can place bids on ONLINE by going to our homepage website: www.stmarkcc.net until July 25th. Check it out!

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 13: 24-30 Overcoming Weakness Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. (Romans 8:26)

Living the Word: We are all surrounded by weeds: our own sins and failures, pain and suffering, the evil actions of others, and disasters of the world. I am sure your children are aware of these things; how can we help them understand that even though evil exists in the world and bad things do happen, God loves us and forgives our sins when we repent. We must always stay focused on God. Talk to your children about allowing the Holy Spirit to enter their lives through prayer and being open to the guidance the Holy Spirit gives. As family, how can we do this?

Questions of the Week: Child: When will you need the help of the Holy Spirit this week? Adult: What weakness can the power of the Spirit help you overcome?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On July 23rd, we celebrate the birthday of James Gibbons, the Cardinal who helped start ---- and then laid the cornerstone of -----the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Would you like to go to college someday? What kind of college do you think you would like the most? What would you like to study? What would you like to be when you grow up? Why don’t you look him up on the computer and find out more information about him?

BLESSING AND INVESTITURE OF THE SCAPULAR OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

Please join the Legion of Mary, on July 16, 2020 at the 8:30am Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This feast, instituted in the 14th century by the Carmelite Order, commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1251 when the Blessed Mother gave the brown scapular to Saint

Simon Stock. Stay after Mass and Fr. Cesar will do the Blessing and Enrollment in the Confraternity. When you are enrolled in the Brown Scapular, Our Blessed Lady becomes your Mother in a special way. The Scapular with which she clothes you reminds you of your dependence upon her. Childlike simplicity is one of the silent sessions it teaches. As long as we wear it we shall be reminded that we are in a spiritual state in which we need to be clothed by Our Blessed Mother, and it will keep us in her arms always. Additional literature explaining Our Lady's Conditions and Brown Scapulars will be handed out afterwards. Any questions please call Nora Hamilton, Legion of Mary-Mother of Mercy Praesidium, 910-358-8199.
