Day 2 Kielder week – the long walk challenge! You’ll see from our blog posts that team Year 5 have ventured out. Can you follow part, or all of, our walk? We have questions and clues for you to spot along the way. Email photos and comments to let us know how you got on! 1. There are many bridges along this route. We started above the Dene near to pet’s corner. Do you know the name of the tall metal fenced bridge we started on? (There’s a park nearby with the same name!) Walk to the end of the bridge and turn right onto Jesmond Dene road. 2. On Jesmond Dene road there is a blue road sign that tells you the weight limit for the road. Can you spot it? What is the limit? Follow the road all the way around, past the allotments on your right and down the little slope near the old Banqueting house. Here you will find a little turning on your left which will link to Reid park road. Walk a little way up the slope. You should spot a small black metal fenced wooded area on your right. Here you will find a ruin to explore…. 3. In a shaded spot above the old Banqueting house is an old ruin. What is it called? Can you find the information board and read a little about it and its history? If you track around the ruin you will find a path that leads back to Jesmond Dene road. Stop near the gate- there are a few steps down to your right. Here you will find a tunnel under the road leading to the back of the Banqueting house. Inside you will be able to spot a pretty, little sheltered garden…do be nosey! Aren’t the plants lovely!

(There’s a park nearby with the same name!)

Walk to the end of the bridge and turn right onto Jesmond Dene road.

Stop near the gate- there are a few steps down to

your right. Here you will find a tunnel under the road leading to the back of the Banqueting house. Inside you will be able to spot a pretty, little sheltered garden…do be nosey! Aren’t the plants lovely!

Can you find the fine curved arch of a stone bridge to take you across the Ouseburn?

4. The main path through the dene is below you- do you know that it has a name?

Turn left after the bridge. Head towards the waterfalls. Stay above the main pathway here in the shade.

5. Do you know what these flowering shrubs are called?

6. Can you find this sign? I’ve cut part of the wording off the photo. What should it actually say?

Keep walking towards the waterfalls. Here you will find another, much smaller bridge with some strange shaped stones.

7. How many of these stones are there as you cross the Ouseburn again?

Then on you right you should see this ruin.

8. Do you know what is it and why it was built here?Do not cross the Ouseburn by the waterfalls. Turn to your left and follow the path around, past the meadow picnic spot and along the side of the Ouseburn. You will be curving around under the beautiful old school now a hotel called ‘Jesmond dene house’. Cross the Ouseburn once again.

9. Can you work out how many bridges you have crossed now?Follow the path, passing the old quarry to the tall sturdy bridge at Castle farm road. (The Ouseburn is now on your left-hand side).

10. Can you find the tunnel under the road? Can you count the number of stones needed to make the arched entrance?

Make your way up the last part of the dene and come out on Freeman road opposite Lilburn Gardens. Cross over carefully and walk to the end of Lilburn. Now turn right and follow the wagonway up to St Francis church.

11. Have a look at the bike route signs- how many miles is it to ride to the Quayside?

12. Can you spot the information board about the wagonways?

Turn left down Cleveland gardens. Soon you will be able to see our school. When you reach the gate, you will have walked 5km.

13. Can you find out what that is in miles? You did it! Congratulations!
