TIDBITS ® IS SEEING by Kathy Wolfe Cardinal, scarlet, ruby, flame, cranberry or carnelian: No matter how you say it, the color is red! This week, Tidbits looks at what Crayola ranks as America’s 12th favorite color. • The longest wavelength of light discernible by the human eye is red. Longer wavelengths can’t be seen and are called infrared. Red light carries the least amount of energy. It’s also the highest arc of the rainbow. • Early red dye was a very expensive commodity. It came from the female cochineal, a little beetle found in Mexican cacti. When the Spaniards arrived in Mexico in the 16th century, they scraped the beetles off the plants and dried them, then shipped them to Europe. About one million beetles were required to produce just one pound of water-soluble extract. • Symbolism associated with the color red is full of opposites. We think of it as the color of love — red roses, Valentine’s Day and Cupid — but it is also the color of danger, hate and the devil. Red can be used as a symbol of guilt, sin and anger, as in the biblical statement, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.” Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel “The Scarlet Letter” tells the story of a woman found guilty in the sin of adultry and forced to wear a red letter RED

Eiffel was adamant about safety precautions, and as a result, only one worker died during the construction.

• At the time of its completion, the Tower was, at 986 feet (300.5 m), the tallest structure in the world. It surpassed the previous record-holder, the Washington Monument, and kept that title for 41 years. But in 1930, New York City’s Chrysler Building exceeded the Tower’s height by 61 feet.

• Gustave Eiffel engraved the names of 72 notable French scientists and engineers on the side of the tower in 23.6-inch-high letters, just under the first platform; there are 18 names on each side.

The iconic national symbol of France welcomes nearly seven million visitors every year. Follow along and learn more about the Eiffel Tower, one of the most recognizable structures in the world. • Paris was chosen as the site of the 1889

World’s Fair to mark the 100th celebration of the French Revolution. The city solicited ideas for a unique entranceway to the area. Gustave Eiffel’s company submitted the winning design, although it was Eiffel’s employee Morris Koechlin who actually designed the Tower.

• Ground was broken in January of 1887, and over the next two years, two months and five days, 300 workers on wood scaffolding assembled more than 18,000 pieces of iron, holding them together with 2.5 million rivets to form the open-framed structure. Gustave

“A” sewn onto her clothing. • According to psychological research, people of

both genders find those of the opposite sex more attractive if they’re wearing red. Men wearing red appear more powerful to women, as well as higher in status and more likely to succeed. In a University of Rochester study, men were shown identical photos of the same woman. In one, she’s in a blue dress, and in the other, the dress is digitally altered to red. Consistently, men chose the photo of her in the red dress as more attractive.

• Other research indicates that red can keep us from doing our best on important tests. During experiments, those who saw a flash of red before the test were impaired in their performance, perhaps because they associated the color with mistakes and failures, as errors are traditionally marked in red on school papers. Studies also show that red elicits the strongest reaction of all colors and can actually stimulate energy and increase blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat and pulse rate.

• Most Americans have probably seen the U.S. flag countless times without knowing what its colors mean. The red stripes symbolize “courage, hardiness and blood shed from the brave men and women who fought for America,” while the white stripes stand for

purity and equality. The blue field represents justice, perseverance and vigilance.

• Before the days of synthetic dyes, the shade of red known as crimson was produced by using the dried bodies of the kermes insect. This bug is found in the Kermes oak tree, which grows in Mediterranean countries. Crimson is not only the official color of Harvard University’s athletic team, it is also the name of the team itself. Likewise, the University of Alabama’s 19 varsity sports teams adopted the name Crimson Tide in the early 20th century.

• A poem entitled “Warning” inspired the formation of The Red Hat society, a social group founded for the purpose of “fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness” for women over 50. The lines “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me” gave the original group of 18 their signature hat idea. Within seven years, there were 40,000 chapters of the group worldwide. The Society has an online store, a magazine and more than 70,000 registered members who believe “silliness is the comedy relief of life.” The first red hat, which had been a birthday gift to one of the charter members, has been donated to the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

• An abundant amount of iron oxide on the surface of Mars gives the planet its red color, hence its nickname, the Red Planet. The fourth planet from the sun, Mars is the only planet whose surface can be seen in detail from Earth.

• In China, red is the symbol of good luck and fortune, and a bride traditionally wears red and walks down a red carpet to her groom, who lifts her red veil. When the couple’s children are born, well-wishers gift them with red eggs. During Chinese New Year, homes are decorated with red, red clothing is worn, and unmarried children are given red envelopes filled with “luck money.” Feng shui is an ancient Chinese method of organizing our spaces to achieve balance, harmony and good fortune. Devotees of feng shui recommend painting your home’s front door red to invite prosperity.

• Surveys reveal that those who drive red cars have dynamic personalities, are high-energy, speedy and sexy.

• Your blood is red because it contains the protein chemical known as hemoglobin. Bright red in color, hemoglobin contains iron, which makes it a superb medium for transporting the oxygen and carbon dioxide essential for the body’s

During presidential election years, states favoring the Republican Party candidate are considered as “red” states, while those favoring the Democratic candidate are “blue” states. The practice began with the 2000 presidential election.

Red foods that come from plants, such as straw- berries, cherries, tomatoes and peppers, get their red color from carotenoids, red pigments that assist in photosynthesis. Red meat gets its color from the iron found in myoglobin and hemoglobin in the animal’s muscles and blood.

EIFFEL TOWER (from page 2)

• Nicknamed La dame de fer, or the iron lady, the Tower was finished at a cost of about $1.5 million, which translates to about $58 million in today’s dollars. By the end of its first year, the Tower had recouped about 75 percent of its initial cost.

• The Tower was not well-received by Parisians and was frequently referred to as the “eyesore.” The structure’s building permit allowed it to stand for 20 years, after which it was to be dismantled. However, in 1898, it was decided that the structure was valuable as a radio tower, and it was saved from demolition.

• There are 347 steps to the first level of the Tower where visitors can dine at the fine restaurant Le 58 tour Eiffel. Another 674 steps bring climbers to the second level, location of the swanky restaurant Le Jules Verne. If climbing to the top of the Eiffel Tower is on your bucket list, this is one item that you can’t check off. Tourists can only climb as far as the second level, with access to the summit by elevator only. At the top, on a clear day, visitors can see 42 miles in every direction.

• In order to protect the Tower from oxidation, its iron surfaces are repainted about every seven

years, 18 times since its 1889 opening day. All the painting is done by hand by 25 painters over an 18-month period. About 50 tons of paint are used, along with 1,500 brushes, 5,000 sanding disks and 1,000 scrapers. The Tower’s color has changed occasionally over the years, starting with red-brown, progressing to yellow-ocher and chestnut brown, and finally ending up with its current bronze color.

• About seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower each year, making it the most visited paid monument in the world. Since its opening, it has welcomed 250 million people from every corner of the world. ■

Gustave Eiffel

● It was American author James Thurb-er who made the following sage observa-tion: “Humor is emotional chaos remem-bered in tranquility.”

● If you’re a fan of the original “Wizard of Oz” movie, you might be surprised to learn that the actress who played Glin-da the Good Witch, Billie Burke, was 54 years old when the film was shot.

● The award for the most needless war in history could very well go to Paraguay, whose president, Francisco Solano Lo-pez, believed himself to be an excellent tactician. He was a great admirer of Na-poleon Bonaparte and wished to emulate the French emperor, but he had no wars to fight. To remedy the situation, in 1864 Lopez declared war on all three of his neighboring countries, Uruguay, Argenti-na and Brazil. His tactical abilities seem to have been of little use, however; it is esti-mated that 90 percent of Paraguay’s male population was killed during the course of the war.

● During this time of election madness, “misology” could be a useful word to know. It means “hatred of reason.”

● French novelist Marcel Proust’s mag-num opus, “Remembrance of Things Past,” has been hailed as a literary mas-terpiece, but not everyone was a fan at first read. As Proust was trying, unsuc-cessfully, to find a publisher for his seven-volume work, one publisher said, “I may be dense, but I fail to see why a chap needs 30 pages to describe how he toss-es and turns in bed before falling asleep.” The author finally published the first vol-ume with his own money; after the book was hailed as a masterpiece by critics, the same publishers who had rejected Proust competed for the opportunity to print the other six volumes of his work. *** Thought for the Day: “Before I got married I had six theories about bringing up children; now I have six children and no theories.” -- John Wilmot

• The ever-popular Hawaiian shirt was first marketed as the “Aloha” shirt in the early 1930s. Chinese merchant Ellery Chun was living in Waikiki and began sewing the colorful shirts out of old kimono fabrics in the back room of the dry goods store where he worked. Surfers and tourists snapped up the shirts as fast as Chun could produce them. Their popularity spread to the mainland when Hawaiian-based military personnel returned home after World War II. President Harry Truman wore them on a regular basis and even appeared on the cover of Life magazine wearing one.

• Although the first college football game was played in 1869, players didn’t start wearing team jerseys until 1877. Because there were no distinct uniforms, it was becoming more difficult to tell the difference between the two teams. Princeton University was the first team to don a specialized jersey, a black cotton sweater with an orange “P” worn under a laced canvas jacket. The jacket was designed by a player, L. P. Smock, which led to the term used today for a loosely fitted garment. Football jerseys didn’t feature numbers until 1916, when the NCAA instigated rules requiring one on the back, and it wasn’t until 1937 that numbers on both front and back became regulation.

• The word “T-shirt” didn’t appear in the English dictionary until the 1920s, and, at that time, was solely used to refer to underwear. Its origin dates to World War I when American troops were clad in wool uniforms during Europe’s hot summers. They saw European soldiers wearing lightweight cotton undershirts, and it wasn’t long before the Army and Navy had them as part of their uniforms.

• T-shirts were so named because of the outline of the garment’s shape. They moved from underwear class to fashion status in the 1950s when James Dean appeared in “Rebel Without a Cause” wearing a T-shirt, and Marlon Brando wore one in “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Almost overnight, it became cool to wear “underwear” as a fashion statement.

• Tie-dyed T-shirts became a craze in the 1960s, and the introduction of screen-printing provided the opportunity to create shirts bearing artwork, slogans and advertising. Screen-printing uses stencils, with ink directly imprinted onto the fabric. A different screen is required for each color. Today’s digital printing is much easier, eliminating the need for separate screens. Much like an ink-jet printer works with your computer, digital printing can transfer full-color photos directly onto the fabric.

• The oldest known printed T-shirt is a campaign shirt from New York Governor Thomas Dewey’s 1948 presidential bid against Harry Truman. The shirt is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute.

• The term “blue collar” worker came about from the popularity of the color blue for the durable shirts of manual laborers. Because most office workers were attired in white

shirts, that term evolved to identify those who work in office or professional environments. The color distinction has expanded to include a socio-economic class difference. Studies have revealed that when a group of individuals in dress shirts enter an area, a person in a white shirt will be perceived as the “boss” over those wearing colored shirts. ■

What could possibly be interesting to read about shirts, you say? Au contraire! Just keep your shirt on and try some of these fascintating facts on for size!

The shirt on your back

Q: I read in an interview with James Van Der Beek that he was going to be in a new comedy this year, but I haven’t seen anything about it. I know he’s in “Franklin and Bash,” but I don’t think that’s what he’s talking about. Do you have any inside information that can help? -- Violet F., Harrisburg, Pa.

A: James was referring to his mid-season comedy called “Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23,” in which he plays a “sort of” version of himself. The series debuts after comedy powerhouse “Modern Family” on April 11 on ABC. The show is about a female odd couple who live together in New York City, with James por-traying the best friend of Chloe, the mean-girl roommate. I’ve seen the pilot and it is very funny, and I love that James is able to parody himself in a non-self-conscious way, and that he isn’t afraid to bring up “Dawson’s Creek.” ***

Q: When does the new Snow White movie come out in theaters? -- Brandon D., Omaha, Neb.

A: That would depend on which Snow White movie you mean. “Mirror Mirror” -- which stars Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins as

Snow White and Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott -- hits theaters on March 30. This film is being billed as family fare, in contrast to the darker “Snow White and the Huntsman.” The latter film stars Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna, with Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, and will fill the big screens on June 1. “Snow White” is a twist on the fairy tale, in which the Huntsman schools Snow White in the art of war and together they start a re-bellion to bring down the Queen. ***

Q: I watched a full version of the movie “Dressed to Kill” on TV recently, and I’m posi-tive that Sylvester Stallone played the part of Angie Dickinson’s son but was not listed on the credits. Did he use another name? -- Lin L., via e-mail

A: The part of Angie Dickinson’s son, Pe-ter Miller, was played by Keith Gordon, 51, whom I remember best as Jason Melon in “Back to School,” the bullied college nerd whose father (played by Rodney Dangerfield) enrolls in college with his son to help him assimilate. In the late ‘80s, Keith made the move to directing, helming such series as “Wild Palms,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” “Dexter” and “House.” ***

Q: Could you please tell me if “Against the Wall” will be returning? -- Kathleen E., via e-mail

A: Despite positive reviews by “New York Daily News,” “Los Angeles Times” and “The Hollywood Reporter,” Lifetime’s cop-drama “Against the Wall” wasn’t able to hold enough of its lead-in audience from “Drop Dead Diva” each week, and its ratings slipped from a meager 1.78 million viewers at its pre-miere to 1.47 million by its season finale. Lifetime opted not to renew the show for a second season.

Warehouse Club Pharmacies for All Dear Mary: I read your column in Wom-an’s Day magazine about warehouse clubs. In it, you said pharmacies at warehouse clubs offer prescriptions at discounts and, by law, must be open to nonmembers, too. Does that mean I can drop off my prescription without a membership, or do I have to get the one-day pass and end up paying extra? -- Jim, email

Dear Jim: Membership is not required by law for full access to Sam’s Club and Costco phar-macies. Tell the store employee that you are there to use the pharmacy. You will not be required to pay any nonmember surcharges or fees. You can pay for your medications at the pharmacy instead of going

through the regular checkout lines, if you desire. For more information on Sam’s Club and Costco phar-macies, check out their websites. BJ’s has closed its pharmacies. * * * Dear Mary: My husband is 65, and we need to figure out his health care options. Right now, he is covered by my insurance at work, but it is very expensive. How do I determine the most cost-effective supplemental plans? Does he have to call each provider? Is there a resource that will help us get the biggest bang for our buck? -- Mary, California

Dear Mary: Go to www.Medicare.gov, a very comprehensive website that is quite easy to navi-gate and understand. You will learn what benefits he qualifies for now that he is 65. You’ll learn what Part A covers, what the premium is for that, why he needs a Part B policy (Medigap), what is available to him in your area, how much it costs, what it covers and so on. * * * Dear Mary: Cascade dishwasher deter-gent isn’t doing its job now that they have taken out the phosphates. A friend told me to add TSP (trisodium phosphate) to our dishwasher deter-gent to make it as good as the old Cascade. I’m wondering whether TSP is safe to use on dishes. My friend uses one part dishwasher detergent to

one part TSP. -- Mary Beth, email

Dear Mary Beth: Responding to laws that went into effect in 17 states in 2010, the nation’s de-tergent makers reformulated their products to reduce what had been the crucial ingredient, phosphates, to just a trace. That’s when Procter & Gamble added a low-phosphate version to its Cascade product line-up. You must live in one of those 17 states. But good news! You can still get the original Cascade Dish-washer Powder online where it is sold as a commer-cial product. Among sites that sell the original Cas-cade, Amazon sells single boxes, double packs and cases of multiples. The prices are very reasonable -- all cheaper than Cascade sold in discount stores and warehouse clubs. I’m hesitant to recommend that you supple-ment with TSP, something I have not tried myself. TSP is formulated for industrial cleaning, not for dishwashers. While it might work, my fear is that it would chemically react and over time permanently etch my dishes and glassware.

(and more than a few adults)

Dog Talk Whether confessional, emotional, baby-like or all business, we humans talk to our dogs. And as those of us paying attention know: They talk back. They talk with their tails, with their ears, with their eyes, with their posture, with their bodies, with their tongues and with their voices. And unlike we humans, they say exactly what’s on their mind -- no games, no mixed messages, no hard to get. A woman called recently and told me her dog growls only when she kisses him goodnight. Only when she kisses him goodnight? Great. Stop kissing him goodnight. Problem solved. That’s not what she did. She kept on kissing him goodnight, every night, again and again, until he bit her. Eight stitches on the face later, and she’s ready to listen. Her dog warned her. He told her to knock it off. He said with his growl: I don’t like it when you do that, and if you don’t stop, I’m going to bite you. In truth, he probably said it in more ways than one. The whites of his eyes might have been larger than usual. His body and tail probably stiff-ened. He likely lifted his head, nose in the air, and gave her a wide-eyed sideways stare. But she didn’t hear any of it -- not even the growl. When I asked her why she persisted in kiss-ing him despite his obvious displeasure, she told me she loved giving him kisses and didn’t think he meant it. Turns out, he did. They always do. We can do our dogs and ourselves a great service by taking them seriously as the animals they are. And I don’t mean “seriously” as in all business, no play. To the contrary, play is an important part of being a dog. In fact, they employ postures and body language that say, “Hey, let’s play!” Recogniz-ing a dog’s play bow helps dog owners distinguish between friendly play and a potential fight, say, at the dog park. Taking our dogs seriously as animals means not pretending they are human. It means educating ourselves in the wonderful ways of dogs. It means learning how to communicate with them in ways they understand, and learning to listen to them in their many attempts to get their message across. Recognizing changes in a dog’s eating habits and energy level informs a dog owner as to the pos-sibility of a need for a trip to the vet. Recognizing fear and anxiety in a dog can help a person pinpoint his triggers and gradually

lessen their power over him. Recognizing shy or antisocial behavior in a dog can serve as a guide to designing effective so-cialization techniques. And recognizing the signs of aggression, whether isolated or general, will help protect you, your dog and others from harm. But recognition is only the first step. Acceptance is the next. Research Grants Kindle Medical Breakthroughs America has long been a world leader in pio-neering medical research discoveries. The scientific breakthroughs in the last century were breathtaking, and now the future looks even brighter. Two cornerstones of our nation’s research accomplishments are the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The NIH tries to understand every aspect of health, from basic mechanisms of disease to clinical trials of new and novel approaches to treating the most common (heart disease and cancer) and the most rare of diseases. The NSF supports research in the funda-mental sciences, such as biology and chemistry. Only by truly understanding every aspect of human life, at the most basic level, will diseases be cured and disabilities that accompany aging be miti-gated, assuring a better quality of life from the cradle to the grave. To accomplish these goals, our nation has invested heavily in the two agencies. This invest-ment has helped establish a medical industry that is essential to America’s economic and physical well-being. It includes pharmaceutical, diagnostic and treatment sectors. Of all the functions of our federally funded research endeavors, none is more important than creating opportunities and nurturing the careers of young scientists as they pursue postgraduate and doctoral training and eventually join the faculties of our medical schools and research institutions. The NIH provides grants to young scientists that give them the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of experienced mentors. This funding frees them to devote time to research. With-out it they would likely have to do more teaching (in the case of basic scientists) or clinical care (in the case of academic physicians). These young scientists conduct rigorous re-search that will hopefully lead to discoveries impor-tant enough to be published in science and medical journals. Publishing in peer-reviewed journals great-ly enhances a researcher’s chances for more grants and for promotion, such as tenure. Needless to say, there is no more difficult or competitive a career than basic biologic or clinical research. The chances of success are small and the

commitment must be total. A research career is pos-sible only through dedication, long hours and much sacrifice, combined with true talent and intensive training. The key is obtaining a position in a respect-ed researcher’s laboratory, where a young scientist can be nurtured and gain experience. The next step is applying for a grant from the NIH or NSF. A submitted proposal is reviewed by a panel of experts who score the grant based on its creativity and perceived chance of success. Of all the grants written, less than 10 percent are eventu-ally funded. The percentage of proposals receiving funding is likely to fall further as budget cuts become a fact of life for the agencies. A lack of funding could lead to a crisis in many aspects of health care research. Without sup-porting grants, research laboratories close and ex-perienced and talented scientists end up working in more utilitarian environments. Already there are too few young physicians willing to sacrifice for careers in academic research. Their training in understanding disease and treating patients provides them with the necessary insights that could lead to the next great health care break-through. Why should these young doctors consider a career in science when less demanding and more fiscally rewarding career choices are available? Cuts in grant funding, which discourage our best and brightest from pursuing research careers, is a national tragedy. I hope that our political lead-ers and voters understand that America may soon no longer be on the cutting edge of medical research. While money may be saved in the short term, the effect of losing the leadership role to other nations could result in the decline of America’s innovative health care industry, a vibrant economic engine fu-eled by research.

Bleeding Hearts and Bootstraps Q: I was surprised by the woman who wrote to you and said that people living on a small amount of Social Security were just lazy. Let me share my story to help this callous woman understand why people like me don’t get very much from Social Security. Believe me, I am not lazy. I worked for quite a few years before I married my husband. Shortly after we were married, I withdrew all of my retirement savings to help him start a busi-ness, which eventually became very successful. I quit my job and worked for his business but never got compensated. Just before our 10th anniversary, he divorced me to marry someone much younger and prettier. I was left with nothing. I’ve worked at a variety of jobs since then. Some were cov-ered by Social Security. Some were not. I’m now 62 and can’t get benefits from my non-Social Security jobs. I’m left with a small Social Security check of my own. I was married to my ex for nine years and 11 months. I know I must have been married 10 years to claim benefits from my ex-husband. But we lived to-gether for several years before our marriage, and we were living in a common-law state. I talked to someone at my local Social Security office about possibly claiming divorced wife’s benefits from my ex, but she told me I’m not eligible. Do you think I can claim benefits? And if so, would I need a lawyer to do this?

A: Yes, I think you are eligible for divorced wife’s benefits. As you know, the rules do state that a divorced woman has to be married 10 years before she can claim benefits from her ex’s Social Security account. But there are different ways to define “mar-riage.” And if you live in a state that recognizes a common-law relationship, that can be just as legally

valid as a traditional marriage. So it certainly is worth a shot to try to claim benefits. As I point out so often in this column, you have every right in the world to file for any kind of Social Security benefit for which you think you might be eligible. You’ll need to get to a Social Security office to do this. You should make an appointment by calling them at 800-772-1213. There’s a pretty good chance whomever you’re talking to will say, “You’re not eli-gible, so there is no need to file a claim.” But again, you have every right to do so, and you must insist on applying for benefits. When you file a claim, you make the process a legal one. That is very important. Without actu-ally signing an application form, you have only the (possibly wrong) opinion of the person to whom you are talking. And that’s worth nothing. But by filing a claim, you have legal rights, including the right to appeal the claim if they turn you down the first time. As part of this process, you’re going to have to come up with some kind of proof that you had a common law relationship with this man that lasted more than 10 years. Or in your case, a traditional married relationship for 9 years and 11 months, and a common-law one for at least one month before that. The preferred proof would be something like tax re-turns or property records during the period before you were actually married that list you as a couple. Barring that, it could be a document as simple as a birthday card in which he wrote: “To my loving wife” or something like that. Even affidavits from friends and neighbors indicating they knew you as a couple before your marriage would help make your case. You won’t need a lawyer to file that first claim. Just fill out an application for divorced wife’s benefits at a Social Security office and provide as much of the evidence discussed above as possible. If your claim gets denied, file an appeal immediately. The first ap-peal is really just an internal review of your case in a Social Security office, so no lawyer is needed for that either. But if that first appeal is also denied, then the next step is a hearing before a Social Security judge. This is when you might get a lawyer. But don’t pay for one. Almost every large community has an office that offers free legal counseling. It’s usually called “legal services.” These are generally staffed by young lawyers who take cases for free because they’re trying to get legal experience. And I will bet they would love to take your case because it’s so in-

teresting. Working with this attorney, you may just be able to come up with the proof and the convincing ar-guments you need to prove a common-law relation-ship and claim the divorced wife’s benefits I think you are due.

If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar-

genau has the answer. Contact him at [email protected]. To find out more about Tom Margenau and to read past columns and see features from other Creators Syndi-cate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate web-site at www.creators.com.

Louse Invasion Drives Mom Buggy DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My family is going buggy -- literally. My 5-year-old kinder-gartener has head lice. I discovered them after he started continually scratching his head. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about this. I can’t imagine where he picked them up. Is the entire family destined to come down with them? I have four other children, two dogs and a husband. Help! -- B.C.

ANSWER: Head lice cause mothers more consternation than just about any other illness. For the record, head lice don’t transmit any illnesses. They do cause itching and scratching. They’re not a reflection of your cleanliness. Most likely your child picked them up at school from head-to-head contact or from sharing caps, brushes or combs. The head louse is only 3 mm (0.12 inches) long. They’re difficult to see. The female louse lays her eggs at the base of the hair and glues them to the hair. The eggs are called nits. They hatch in about eight days. Nits found within a quarter of an inch from the scalp indicate active infection. If they are farther away, the infection is not likely to be active. Treatments for head lice are many and usu-ally quite effective. Advisory bodies promote per-methrin (Nix) as the treatment of choice. It calls for reapplication in one week to 10 days. Malathion lotion (Ovide) is another reliable cure. Benzyl alco-hol (Ulesfia Lotion 5 percent) is another good treat-ment that is applied to dry hair and then rinsed off. Natroba (spinosad) Topical Solution was approved recently as a head lice treatment. Both these latter two medicines need a prescription. You have many choices. Some of these treatments include combing the wet hair with a fine-toothed comb to get rid of nits. You do not have to treat other family mem-bers if they show no signs of infection. Pets are safe; human head lice don’t like them. The only household cleaning necessary is vacuuming chairs and carpets where your 5-year-old has been. Clothes he has worn in the past two days need to be washed in hot water and dried with maximum heat. Lice that are off the head live for only two days.

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Some time ago, you wrote about a shrunken leg that was shaped like some kind of bottle. It has the word “teeth” in it. I have a dropped foot. My doctor doesn’t know what I am talking about but would like to see the article. Will you repeat it? -- I.D.

ANSWER: The “teeth” in what I wrote re-ferred to Dr. Tooth, an English doctor whose name is part of a nerve illness called Charcot (SHAR-coe)-Marie-Tooth disease. In spite of the fact that the name draws a look of puzzlement from most people, it’s the most commonly inherited nerve-muscle disorder. The illness usually shows itself in teen years, but it can take many years before it’s diagnosed. The lower leg muscles become quite thin, so the leg looks like an upside-down champagne bottle. It makes walking difficult. People stumble. Often, they cannot lift the foot fully off the ground -- a dropped foot. A number of different varieties of this illness exist. I’ve described the most common one. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Applying Online for Social Security Have you seen the public service announce-ments with Patty Duke promoting Social Security and Medicare? Now there’s a new one: She’s signing up for Social Security ... from home ... in her pajamas! I thought the plaid PJs were a bit much, but the message is a good one. We can sign up for So-cial Security and Medicare from the comfort of our home, assuming we have an online computer. Here is a partial list of things you can do on-line at the Social Security site: Apply for Social Security benefits. Apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Apply for Medicare. Apply for disability benefits (includes the Adult Disability Report). Estimate the amount of retirement benefits you’ll get. There’s a limit of 30 minutes to this feature, so make sure you have all your information ready. You’ll need your name, Social Security num-ber, date and place of birth, and your mother’s maid-en name. You’ll be able to calculate the best age to start collecting benefits. Get extra help with Medicare drug plan costs. This could add up to $4,000 in assistance if you’re already on Medicare and have low income. Once you apply online, you’ll be given a con-firmation number. At the same site you can then go in and check the status. If you’re certain you’ll never want to use the online features at Social Security, your best bet is to block access. You might want to do this if you’ve been the victim of identity theft or domestic violence. Suggestion: If it’s more convenient to apply online, once you’re all set up, then go in and block your information completely. Then no one, even you, can access it without a phone call to Social Security. To get started, go online to www.socialsecurity.gov.

My Grandmother, My Hero! Q: My widowed grandmother of 89 years is my hero. During my lifetime, I have found her to be the happiest and most contend-ed individual I know. She literally radiates love to everyone and always has a friendly, positive attitude even through several difficult trials in her life. How she does it do not know, but I ad-mire her greatly and would like to write her life story. I want future generations in our family to know and appreciate her for the great lady she is. How does one go about something like this?

A: As all writers know, before starting a task like this you first have to be motivated, and it’s clear that you’re already there. So now you must purpose yourself to buckle down and just get started. Sit down with your grandmother and explain what your intentions are and your reasons for wanting to write about her. Ask if she is willing to cooperate by spending several interview sessions to answer in her own words a list of questions that you will prepare in advance. I would guess she’d be happy to do this. Decide how inclusive you want your story to be. Do you want to present a complete narrative of her life, or just some of the important highlights? Remem-ber that it’s always better to gather too much informa-tion than not enough. Giving her a list of questions ahead of time will help jog her memory and give her time to orga-nize her thoughts. It may also prompt her to dig out some old photo albums, diarys and newspaper clip-pings. Today’s home computers make it easy to scan pictures and include them with the text. This will greatly enhance the story and make it even more in-teresting to your readers. Start your list with questions about her child-hood memories and work your timeline from past to present to keep your notes in the proper sequence. Ask leading questions that will cause her to give you as much information as possible, for example: What does she know about her grandparents? Where did they live, and what was their background? What work did her father do? How big was her fam-ily? Was she raised on a farm? Did they have electric-ity? Did she share in doing the chores? What was the school like where she attended? What are some of her favorite childhood memories? What church did they attend? What did they do for fun and entertainment? What influenced her most in establishing her values to become the person she is?

Using speech recognition software that auto-matically transcribes spoken words into written text would be an enormous help to you in this project. One that I have used successfully is called Dragon (dragonnaturallyspeaking.com). All your notes will be instantly written for you as she answers your ques-tions in her own words. It couldn’t be easier! Unless your grandmother’s storehouse of in-formation about her life is captured while she’s still living, it will be lost forever. How I wish I had such a story to read about my own grandparents. What a great legacy you will be leaving for your family to en-joy for generations to come! ● On Feb. 23, 1945, during the battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raise the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi, an event captured on film by AP photographer Joe Rosen-thal. Although the photograph has long led people to believe that the flag raising was a turning point in the battle, fighting continued for 31 more days.

● On Feb. 22, 1950, Walt Disney’s ani-mated feature “Cinderella” opens. Based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, “Cinder-ella” featured songs like “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and became one of Dis-ney’s most beloved films.

● On Feb. 20, 1986, France and Britain announce that a tunnel under the English Channel linking the two countries would soon become a reality. Trains, cars and buses would be able to speed through the tunnel in less than half an hour. Construc-tion began in December 1987, and the “chunnel” was finally completed in 1994.

At least 10 men were killed af-ter Ames revealed their identities, and more were sent to Russian gulags. Both Ames and his wife were later convicted. Ames was sentenced to life in prison while his wife, as part of a plea-bargain agreement, was giv-en a five-year sentence.

Carnival Glass Bowl Used on Holidays Q: My mother received this purple car-nival glass bowl around 1910. She gave it to me when I married in 1957. Marked on the bottom is an “N” in a circle and there is a line under it. The inside is smooth; the only pattern is on the out-side. The bowl has three feet. It is in mint con-dition. My mother always used this dish every holiday to serve pickles and relishes. It is hard to believe it survived all these years. Anything you can tell me about my dish will be appreciated.

A: Northwood Glass Co. was founded by Harry Northwood in Wheeling, W. Va., in 1901. They made pressed glass and blown glass. They pro-duced carnival glass from 1908 to 1915. Northwood Glass Co. ceased operations and closed in 1925. Your circa 1910 bowl would probably be worth $185 to $225.

Q: This mark is on the back of a porce-lain bust of a mother and child. Also included in the mark, below the circle, is the word “Czecho-slovakia.” The bust measures approximately 8 inches tall by 8 inches wide, and it is finished in a white glaze. The details are very good, and the folds of the drape on each are most graceful. It sat on my grandmother’s mantle as far back as the early 1940s and is in excellent condition. I would be most grateful for any informa-tion that you might share with me.

A: Objects marked “Czechoslovakia” were made between 1918 and 1993. Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on Jan. 1, 1993. The history of the mark “Y B S” in a circle is rather murky. It appears on pieces made in several

countries including Czechoslovakia, Germany, Italy and England. It is thought to be the mark of an im-porter or distributor. Interestingly, it has been known to be included with some marks by the Czechoslova-kian Fischer and Mieg Factory. The value of your porcelain bust would prob-ably be $200 to $300.

Q: I have a leather bound book titled “Know Thyself or Nature’s Secrets Revealed.” It was published in 1911 by The S. A. Mullikin Co. in Marietta, Ohio. The book imparts information from the beginning of life to the end. There is also a chapter on how to mix prescriptions and advice on how to heal honeybee stings. I would like to know if it is worth anything.

A: The value of your book is in the range of $35 to $45.

• The word red has found its way into many terms and phrases in the English language. When you’re really angry, you’re seeing red. And lots of things can cause you to see red: going through a lot of red tape (excessive paperwork or numerous steps to complete a process), or having your checkbook in the red, meaning it is below balance. Taking the red eye? You’re on an overnight flight. There’s not much recourse if you’ve been caught red-handed, because you’re clearly guilty. That might cause you to become red in the face or extremely embarrassed. Now and then, we’ve all received the red carpet treatment, when we’ve been made to feel special, and we’ve all had red-letter days, which were important, memorable or joyful. After such days, many folks like to paint the town red, meaning they go out to celebrate! ■

Smoother putts

last used 11-23-08 Vol. 4 - No. 50

Too many players put an emphasis on “hitting” the ball when putting instead of concentrating on getting the ball rolling properly. A good roll includes topspin, which results in the ball dying toward the hole instead of trailing off to the left or right of the hole. Many players set up to a putt with too much weight on their forward foot. This causes a steep-er putting stroke which results in backspin. The ball jumps a bit, and you don’t get the topspin you are looking for.

When setting up to a putt, try putting a small amount of weight on your back foot. This encourages the putter to strike the ball slightly on the upswing causing that nice forward roll. You will find that your ball is rolling more true and you are going to make more putts.
