WITH by Patricia L. Cook This week, Tidbits examines grasses around the world. There are many varieties of grasses found from the freezing North and South Poles to many deserts and the lands along the sultry hot equator. • Grasses belong in the plant family botanists call Poaceae. Grasses are considered flowering plants, but the flowers are not showy as they are on, for example, roses and sunflowers. This lack of showiness is due to the fact that grasses are wind pollinated and not pollinated by insects. The colorful blooms of most flowering plants are needed to attract pollinating insects. • The grass family is very large, containing an estimated 10,000 species worldwide. Over 1,000 species occur in North America alone. • Grasses range widely in shape and size, ranging from golf course turf and lawn grass to wheat, corn, rice, sugarcane and bamboo. • Grasses can be as short as the greens on a golf course and as tall as bamboo that can reach heights of 120 feet. Golfers around the world are thankful for the manicured greens that allow putts to roll precisely as intended. Pandas are thankful for the large bamboo forests they depend on for their sustenance. Talk about picky eaters: Bamboo is all they will eat! • All of our cereal grains belong to the grass family, EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY REALTORRosemary Woodward Broker Carol Carpenter Sales Associate RED HOT (760) 341-1231 (760) 902-5063 CALL US TODAY! HEATING & AIR CONDITIONINGRecognized for their fantastic ability to leap long distances, Grasshoppers are found in variable habitats all over the world, except for the North and South Poles. Grasshoppers are closely related to crickets, locusts and even the lowly cockroach.

An unusual plant that grows in Australia and

Tasmania is the “grass tree.” It looks like a tree trunk with grass growing

on top. The trunk grows slowly, averaging about a foot every 30

years. Wildfires enhance growth and the plants live for several centuries. Aborigines used the nectar of grass

tree flowers to make drinks and ate the leaves, stems and roots. The resin has been

used to make glue and varnish.

1. What exotic, invasive grass is currently a problem in the arid areas of the western United States?

2. What is the name of the fragrant oil extracted from an Asian grass?

● If you are an aficionado of the word game Scrabble, you probably know that there are only five words that can be played using a q but no u. In case you’re not in the know, those words are “faqir,” “qaid, “ “qoph, “ “qindar” and “qintar. “

● In 1774, surveyors in Maryland marked off a parcel of land by mistake. The er-ror was immortalized when the town that grew up on that land adopted the name Accident.

● These days you’ll rarely see an elected official with a beard, but facial hair wasn’t always considered to be a liability in poli-tics. In fact, it’s been reported that Abra-ham Lincoln was inspired to grow a beard while he was running for president in 1860 because of a letter from an 11-year-old girl. Grace Bedell wrote to Lincoln that a beard would make him “look a great deal better, for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers.”

• The early predecessors to motorcycles andmotor scooters were called “safety” bicycles, so named because they replaced the high-wheeled bikes of the early 1800s that were hazardousanddifficulttooperate.Thewheelson the newer bikes were both about the same size, making the bikes more stable and much easier to mount and dismount.

• Roper’s two-wheeled, steam-driven machinecould carry one rider and enough coal to travel about 25miles.He built a total of 10examples of his invention and demonstratedthe machines at fairs and circuses around the eastern U.S.

•Roper died of sudden heart failure whiledemonstrating his steam bicycle’s speed andendurance during a trial run in Worcester County,Massachusetts. While he didn’t findcommercial success or fame, his curious invention inspired others to experimentwithsimilar devices.

•It wasn’t long before European inventorsdecided to attach a motor to the velocipedefor propulsion. In 1885, Gottleib Daimleris credited with building the first motorizedbicycle.Daimler’sbikesweremadeofwoodand came to be known as “boneshakers,”

because of the roughness of the ride (shockabsorberswouldnotcomeuntillater).

Q: I really like this season of “Single Ladies” on VH1. Can you tell me more about Ricky Whittle? He plays Charles on the show. -- Candice W., Columbus, Ohio

A: The hunky U.K. native got his start in sports, which segued into modeling, and now he’s poised to take Hol-lywood and the acting world by storm. I asked Ricky recently about how he got his start in acting and he told me simply: to meet girls. “At the time, I’d loved to have said I did it be-cause I wanted to be recognized as a great actor, but I was shallow. I was young. I’ll be honest -- at that time I was at univer-sity, and I was in the library six days a week reading books. I thought, ‘Do I want to stay in the library, or do I want to be on TV and get lots of girls?’” Aside from his gig on “Single Ladies,” you can catch him soon on the big screen in “Austen-land,” which is about an American woman (played by Keri Russell) who goes to England for a fantasy vaca-tion where you interact with people from Jane Austen books. Ricky told me: “I play Capt. George East. Basi-cally, Jane Seymour is running a brothel, and we’re paid to romance the women who come to the resort. My character is Caribbean. He doesn’t really fit into the ‘Pride and Prejudice’ time. But you’ve got your Mr. Darcys there, and your other Austen characters. He’s a former soap actor, and he thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread. It was very fun to play.” ***

Q: I know this is the final season of “The Closer,” but it hasn’t been on in months, and I am afraid I missed the finale! -- Delia D., via e-mail

A: “The Closer” returns to TNT after a six-month hiatus to air its final six episodes. So tune in Monday, July 9, at 9 p.m. ET/PT as Kyra Sedgwick and company bring seven years of this groundbreak-ing and record-breaking show to an end. ***

Q: Can you tell me what one of my fa-vorite actresses, Thandie Newton, has coming up? -- Pete W., Omaha, Neb.

A: Thandie is set to star in the DIRECTV original suspense-drama called “Rogue,” which begins production in August and will air summer 2013 for a 10-episode run. Thandie plays a morally and emotion-ally conflicted cop named Grace, who is tormented by the possibility that her own actions contributed to her son’s death. Grace’s search for the truth is further complicated by her forbidden relationship with the crime boss who may have had a hand in the death. ***

Q: Is Josh Lucas from “The Firm” mar-ried? Does he have children? -- Ann N., Fairport, N.Y.

A: The handsome 40-year-old -- whose show “The Firm” was recently canceled by NBC -- married his girlfriend, Jessica, in early March. The two also are expecting their first child together.

Chocolate-Almond Strawberries If you love strawberries like I do, then you’ve been watching the patch as steadfastly as I have (and it really doesn’t matter if your “patch” is in your backyard or at your grocery store). Strawberries With Chocolate-Almond Cream Sauce is the current “most favorite” strawberry recipe for you to try:

4 cups sliced fresh strawberries 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free instant chocolate fudge pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 1/2 cups water 1/2 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1 tablespoon mini-chocolate chips 1 tablespoon slivered almonds

1. Spoon 1 cup sliced strawberries into 4 dessert dishes. In a large bowl, combine dry pud-ding mix, dry milk powder and water. Mix well, using a wire whisk. Blend in whipped topping and almond extract. Evenly spoon about 1/2 cup pudding mix-ture over strawberries in each dish. 2. In a small bowl, combine chocolate chips and almonds. Evenly sprinkle 1 1/2 teaspoons chips mixture over top of each. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes. Serves 4.

● Each serving equals: About 158 calories, 2g fat, 6g protein, 29g carb., 398mg sodium, 2g fi-ber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Fruit, 1/2 Fat-Free Milk, 1/2 Starch.(c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hedge Against the Gloom-and-doomers When people ask me where they should be investing, I tell them my two favorite sectors are canned food and ammunition. Of course, I’m look-ing to get a laugh, but truth be told I am serious. At least about the food. I’ve been quietly growing an investment of non-perishable food for some time. I will admit to having stayed up late at night watching the Nat Geo Channel, learning the many ways the world as we know it may soon end -- from a global economic collapse to unfathomable horrors from outer space. People, this is nothing new. There have always been gloom-and-doomers. When I was a kid, the doom du jour was communism. That led families to construct underground bomb shelters stocked with food and water. Then there was the Cuban missile crisis (oh, great, now I’m really dating myself), which I was certain we would not survive. There have been untold numbers of “doom-ful” predictions having to do with bird flu, swine flu, HIV-aids, tsunamis, meteors and all manner of fear-ful things that surely would wipe out life as we know it. Add Nostradamus and the ancient Mayans. I’ve heard it all. Recently, National Geographic rolled out a new show, “Doomsday Preppers,” featuring ordi-nary, everyday people who are reacting and re-sponding to potential disasters. One guy here in California is prepping for an earthquake that might flatten Los Angeles. He’s learned to live off shrubs and weeds, and carries a flint to build fires. A woman in Texas is expecting an unusu-ally nasty oil crisis. The Houston party girl built an impressive survival cache in her tiny apartment, and she practices nighttime backpacking routes to get out of a city she expects will be completely blacked out. Another Texan profiled foresees a polar shift, where the entire Earth will be doing a back-flip on its axis. He’s constructed a home near San Antonio, using eight steel shipping containers, and loaded it up with enough food and ammo to last for 20 years. So, do I line up with these extremists? Not at all. I find it entertaining but certainly not realistic or reasonable. The other extreme is to not be pre-pared at all, however, which also is unacceptable. To me, building a reasonable emergency supply of food for my family is responsible. It’s insurance.

In my adult lifetime, my husband and I have paid close to $100,000 for insurance (automobile, homeowner, health, etc.). We’ve filed precious few claims; nowhere close to the premiums paid. Do I regret it? No! I am grateful we have not faced dev-astating tragedy. To me, food and survival supplies in rea-sonable amounts are just as much insurance as our policies that cover household disasters. These things give me peace of mind and assurance that I will be able to protect my property, my family and my life in the event of emergencies or disasters. Done reasonably, it’s not wacky. And, I intend to do everything in my power to encourage you to follow my lead.

Help for Spouses Spouses and family members of veterans who need services and benefits from the Depart-ment of Veterans Affairs are often the ones who have to deal with the paperwork. Having a source for in-formation and assistance can be immensely helpful. A fairly new website is shaping up to be a one-stop source of information for the spouses of veterans. “The Veterans Spouse, Resources for the Family” at www.vetsspouse.com was started by two women, one the wife and daughter of career mil-itary veterans, and the other the wife of a soon-to-be veteran. While the site is just now up and running, it’s loaded with information that can help you. Here’s a partial list of contents: How to file an appeal, along with a sam-ple letter. A template for general letters, along with a link to correct addresses to send them to. A simplified guide to burial benefits. Information on caregiver benefits and lots of links. Eligibility for the death pension. Clothing allowance for veterans with a prosthetic or special cream medication, with link to application. Substitution of Claimant: If a veteran dies during the benefits process, another person, a family member, may apply to continue the claim. Fiduciary appointment, when the VA decides it will appoint someone else to handle a vet-eran’s finances. An Overview of Civilian Health and Med-ical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). Child-support information (No, it’s not protected. Veterans must pay court-ordered sup-port.) How to handle apportionment (garnish-ment of benefits). Check out VetsSpouse.com and bookmark it in your browser so you’ll know it’s there when you need it.

(and more than a few adults)

The Bombs Bursting in Air The parties, the parades, the fireworks... Who doesn’t love the Fourth of July? Your dog. That’s who. Every snap, crackle and pop, every snare drum and piccolo solo, the average dog hears it five times more intensely than the average human. And if your dog is the shy or timid type, that degree of intensity could induce all-out panic. Panic is no friend to your canine. It can make a pooch do some crazy and dangerous things. Pan-ic is what sends a dog through a glass window. It’s what compels him to dart out of an open door and into the nearest street. It’s what motivates him to keep chewing through a wall, even when his mouth and gums are already torn and bleeding. Yes, indeed, the best view of the rocket’s red glare for your dog is no view at all. Can he attend that Independence Day barbe-cue with you? Sure -- if he’ll be in a secure environment where he can’t run off; if he’s well-socialized and friendly with all people, big and small; if there will be no amped live music or excessive noise, including fireworks; and if he was invited by the hosts. But even if you answered in the affirma-tive to all those conditions, ask yourself whether your dog might still be better off at home. Just be-cause you are technically qualified to go somewhere doesn’t mean you want to be there. On behalf of timid and shy dogs everywhere, I feel confident serving as their collective voice and saying, “Thanks, but no, thanks. I’ll stay home.” Another thing I’d like to suggest for the ben-efit of the timid types is a little desensitization exer-cise that’s good for everything from fireworks and thunderstorms to that scary air compressor in the garage. Buy a CD or collection of CDs that repre-sents the kinds of sounds and noises that freak your dog out. Nature CDs are good for different storm patterns and include varying degrees of thunder. Music that features percussion instruments and drums is great for mellowing a dog to the everyday thumps and knocks of home life. And Michael Jack-son’s “Thriller” might perform miracles in desensi-tizing your dog to creaking floorboards, slamming

More Risk Than Benefit to Replacing Hormones For many years, the use of hormone replace-ment therapy after menopause in women was felt to be invaluable in preventing disease and slowing the aging process -- allowing women to remain forever young. In those days, virtually every one received hormone replacement. In the field of geriatrics, it was not uncommon to initiate hormone replacement therapy in women beyond the age of 70, based on the common belief that heart disease would be pre-vented and memory loss slowed. Then came a landmark study from the Wom-en’s Health Initiative comparing hormone replace-ment therapy to a placebo (sugar pills). Women who had undergone a hysterectomy received estrogen alone. Those with a uterus received estrogen plus progesterone. The trial was abruptly discontinued because of the high risk of breast cancer, strokes, heart disease and venous blood clots. Since this report, published more than a de-cade ago, there has been a decline in the incidence and deaths from breast cancer, ascribed to fewer women receiving hormone replacement. And today hormone replacement is virtually never prescribed initially in late life.

Despite this information, many experts be-lieve that hormone replacement therapy is valuable. They belong to a group of “anti-aging” experts who maintain that to be effective, hormone replacement must be individualized and tailored to the unique physiology of the individual woman. They are con-vinced that continued use of hormone replacement truly retards the aging process, promotes more vi-brant skin, reduces wrinkles and assures a better sex life. However, the vast majority of the health care community does not share this point of view. Nevertheless, their position has been bol-stered somewhat by the fact that hormone replace-ment is effective in treating osteoporosis, while other commonly used medications to build bone and pre-vent fractures -- bisphosphonates -- are not without significant side effects. Some evidence suggests that most of the adverse effects of hormone replacement therapy are due to progesterone. For women who are able to take estrogen treatment alone, the risks of breast cancer and heart disease are much lower. While there is no question that hormone re-placement therapy should be used for post-meno-pausal women who have symptoms such as hot flashes, mood disorders and headaches, their use to treat chronic conditions such as osteoporosis still remains questionable. To address this problem, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has just issued a recommendation, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, that hormone replacement therapy should not be used to treat any chronic condition, including osteoporosis. In this report, the task force notes that com-bined estrogen-progesterone therapy does reduce the risk of fractures in post-menopausal women and may lower the risk of diabetes. They also note that estrogen treatment alone reduces fracture risk, decreases the risk of the more dangerous invasive breast cancer and even reduces the risk of breast-cancer death.

Despite these benefits, the task force strongly recommends against the use of hormone replacement therapy. They note that women taking estrogen and progesterone therapy have a high-er risk of invasive breast cancer and deaths from breast cancer. These women are more prone to have strokes, blood clots in the legs and lungs, gall bladder disease, memory loss, urinary incontinence and deaths from lung cancer. Migraines and heart attacks also are more prevalent. And estrogen therapy alone is not safe. Strokes, blood clots in the legs and lung, gall blad-der disease and urinary incontinence are frequent side effects. Based on all these facts, most experts be-lieve that hormone replacement therapy should be limited exclusively to women who have symptoms after menopause. The lowest dose of hormones needed to relieve symptoms should be prescribed and treatment should be continued for as short a period of time as possible. After menopause, wom-en are more likely to develop chronic disease such as osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Every woman should be appropriately screened for these disorders. When needed, highly effective and relatively safe medications are avail-able. Sadly, there is no “fountain of youth,” and aging is inevitable and normal. To date, neither hor-mone replacement therapy nor any other medica-tion can make us either feel or be younger.

doors and the shrieks of children. Whatever you use, the trick is to sit beside your dog, with him on a leash, and start at a very low volume. Praise him gently whenever he is truly calm, being careful not to nurture an anxious state of mind. Once he grows comfortable with the current level of volume and demonstrates this by remaining con-sistently calm as the music plays, gradually increase the volume. Take your time with this exercise, and do not expect instant results. Desensitization requires time and patience. But it’s worth every bit of effort to see your formerly skittish dog utterly bored by the very things that used to frighten him. Talk about freedom! Happy Independence Day! Woof!

The “Ex” Factor: Divorce and Social Security

Q: My brother recently got a divorce. His ex-wife must have had a better lawyer than he did because she inserted language into the divorce decree specifying how much of his So-cial Security she will get. I believe it’s an extra $500 per month, and this is over and above what she will get through regular Social Secu-rity law on his account. Is there anything my brother can do to get out of this financial obliga-tion?

A: Your brother has nothing to worry about. And your former sister-in-law really didn’t have a bet-ter lawyer -- just a very naive one. There is no language that an attorney can scribble into a divorce decree that takes precedent over federal law. And that law prescribes exactly who is eligible for benefits as a divorced wife and how much she will get. In a nutshell, the rules say that a divorced woman will be eligible for somewhere between one-third to one-half of her ex husband’s Social Security benefit (depending on her age when she files for benefits) if she is at least 62 years old; if her husband is at least 62 years old; if she was married to him at least 10 years; if she is currently unmarried; and if she is not due higher benefits on her own Social Se-curity record. So your ex sister-in-law won’t get a nickel more of your brother’s Social Security than what the law allows her to receive -- no matter what the divorce decree says. This situation is a bit of a twist on a much more common divorce decree issue I’ve dealt with many times in past columns. Normally, I hear from a divorced woman, who tells me that her husband inserted language into the divorce decree that says something like this: “My wife will not be eligible for any benefits as a former wife on my Social Security account.” Once again, that clause isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. A divorced wife will get exactly what Social Security law says she will get. But these greedy husbands may be relieved to hear that any benefits paid to their ex-wives do not take anything away from their own retirement pay-ments. Nor if they remarried does the money paid to an ex offset any spousal benefits the new wife might be due on their accounts. One final point: Social Security also pays benefits to divorced husbands. But they rarely get such payments because their own Social Security retirement benefit is generally higher than anything they might be due from an ex-wife. * * *

Q: I was married to my ex husband for 30 years. I have not remarried, although he did. (He married the woman he was sleeping with while we were married!) Since our divorce, he has gotten a much higher paying position -- through his new wife’s family’s influences. I never worked outside the home because he wanted me to be home with our kids. So I don’t have a Social Security account of my own. He says he won’t sign up for Social Security until he’s at least 70 because he doesn’t need the money. But I do. So I have two questions. We are both 62 now. Do I have to wait until age 70 to get any of his Social Security? And whenever I do get it, will my benefits be based only on the

income he had during the years we were mar-ried?

A: I’ve got good news for you -- and then even better news! And I hope this double dose of happy news makes up for that bad news husband you were married to! The first bit of good news is that you are eligible for benefits right now on his Social Security account. The law normally says that a woman can’t get dependent wife’s benefits from her husband until he is getting benefits. But the rules were lib-eralized for women just like you -- divorced women whose former husbands are intent on sticking it (So-cial Security-wise) to their ex. The law says you can get a divorced wife’s benefit on his record even if he isn’t getting benefits himself. He just has to be old enough to qualify for Social Security. And he is. You said he is 62. The second bit of good news is that your ben-efit rate will be based on his entire earnings history -- not just the period of time that you were married. So at least in a small way, you’ll share in the bounty he’s received from his former mistress’s family! * * *

Q: I am 65 years old. My husband re-cently died. We were married only 8 years. Friends tell me that I had to have been married for 10 years to qualify for widow’s benefits. Is this true? A: No, it’s not true. The 10-year duration of marriage rule applies only to claims for benefits as a divorced wife or widow. But you were still married to your husband when he died, so you are eligible for widow’s benefits right now. You should contact your local Social Security office to file an application right away. Call them at 800-772-1213, or file online at www.socialsecu-rity.gov. And if you were married before, you will possibly have two options. You are certainly due widow’s benefits from the man you were recently married to, but if you can get higher benefits from a prior husband’s Social Security account, you will get those benefits instead.

Suspicious Pap Smear Isn’t Death Sentence DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please say a few words about the prognosis and treat-ment of cervical cancer? My daughter, 45, was told at a recent checkup that she has a few cells of this kind, and she is reacting as if she has received a death sentence. Since it was caught early, shouldn’t her outlook be more cheerful? -- J.B.

ANSWER: All women are indebted to Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear for the early detection of cervical cancer. The cer-vix, by the way, is the necklike projection of the uterus into the vagina. It was the site for the most common cause of cancer death in women before the Pap smear came into wide use. That was in the early 1940s. Since then, deaths from cervical cancer have been cut in half, with about 4,200 deaths occurring annually and 12,200 new cases detected each year. Most of the deaths are in women who did not have Pap smear testing. I’m not clear what you mean by “a few cells of this kind.” If the cells obtained on a smear show low-grade changes, a woman’s chances of having cervical cancer are close to zero. Follow-up smears are the only treatment needed. If the cells show high-grade changes, the doctor will perform a colposcopy. Colposcopy is an examination of the cervix with an instrument that has a magnifying lens so suspicious areas can be readily seen and biopsied. Results de-termine what the next steps should be. However, at these stages -- long before the cancer has spread -- it is still quite curable. Your daughter can trust her doctor to take the appropriate steps depending on the results of her

Pap test. She does not face a death sentence. If she has any questions about her diagnosis, she should call her doctor for an explanation of her test results. The booklet on cervical cancer and Pap smears deals with these issues in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and ad-dress. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband and I are both 28. We have one child, a son. My husband felt a lump in his testicle and saw our family doctor. It turned out to be cancer. He was operated on. The doctor discussed many things with us, but we never discussed the prognosis. We need to know: What’s the usual life span of someone who has had testicular can-cer? -- L.R.

ANSWER: If your husband had a seminona, one of the common varieties of testicular cancer, and if it was in its early stages, your husband’s chances of living a long, full life are very high, over 95 percent.Your husband’s story is something that all young men should take to heart. Testicular cancer is a can-cer of young men, most often males between the ages of 15 and 35. The earliest sign is a small, pain-less lump in the testicle. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Age Has Its Rewards Now that summer is here and we’re all out and about more often, we need to find ways to cut our expenses. There are discounts available in more places than you’d suspect. Asking for discounts locally can be a bit difficult if you’ve never done it. No one wants to stand in a checkout line talking with a cashier about your age while others are waiting, but I’ve discovered the easiest way to get started: Make a list of all the places you generally go: grocery stores, retail shops, theaters, restau-rants, hair salons, bookstores and anywhere else. Call them all up and ask whether they offer a se-nior discount. Ask what the specific discount age is, because some places use 55, or 60, or 62 or even 65. Ask if there are any restrictions. For exam-ple, grocery stores often limit the senior discounts to one day a week. Movie theaters might give the discount only during matinees on certain days of the week. Once you have your list of places that offer a senior discount and know what to expect, you’ll be more willing to ask for it. If you’re about to travel, ask about dis-counts for various modes of transport, as well as for rental cars and motels. If you’re a member of AARP, the opportuni-ties widen. Go online to discounts.aarp.org and click through the offerings. You’ll find shopping, dining, entertainment, home, technology, travel and more. Be sure to click on Local and put in your ZIP code for offers near you. Fifty percent discounts aren’t out of the ordinary. Once you start using the discounts you’ve earned, be sure to ask everywhere you go. There is a good amount of money to be saved simply for the asking. Heaven knows, you’ve earned it!

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot person-ally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Widow Competition Q: In my retirement community the ratio of widowed women to men runs about 4 to 1. Of the available men, the women believe only about half are potential husbands or partners. This is primarily because of the male’s own issues, such as failing health, financial problems, little interest in socializing or sex, and other realistic negatives. I am interested in knowing what recommendations you can offer about finding a compatable new relationship.

A: I can tell you that most senior men look for partners with similar beliefs and values, who are loving, energetic, positive, enthusiastic, attractive, have a sense of humor, and are pleasant and comfortable to be with. They also like a partner who is a good homemaker with caretaking instincts. Most women, I believe, are looking for these same qualities in men. The marked differences we see between younger men and younger women tend to decrease quite a bit as we age. Caution: A major turnoff for any man is a woman who blurts out at the get-go that her number one goal is to get remarried. This will get a man looking for the door before she even knows what happened! It’s in a man’s basic nature to be the pursuer, not the pursued. A major factor in finding a new partner is looking for one with a positive, kind and considerate attitude that shows more interest in others' needs than in his own. Important in a new relationship are common values, common interests, understanding, mutual respect and a willingness to compromise. And keep in mind that there is a special fellow out there looking for you, too! * * *

Q: When I visit my doctor I often feel a bit intimidated and don’t even ask questions that I really want answers to. I do like my doctor, but he always seems in such a hurry and sometimes cuts my visits short. I would like to hear more details about my various conditions, but I usually wind up leaving his office only more confused and wishing I would have been more persistent. Would it be rude or out of place for me to ask if he could stay another minute to give me more information?

A: Absolutely not! You and your insurance carriers are paying your doctor to keep you informed. You not only have the right to more information, but the assurance that nothing regarding your health care is being overlooked. You need to be advised of your

options about medications, possible side effects, weight, diet, blood test results, your eyes, future operations, assisted living options, blood pressure, heart -- and any other concerns you have. It’s common for patients to become tense and simply forget many of the questions they wanted to ask their doctor. You are certainly not the only person who is faced with this dilemma. Do this: Before your next visit, take time to write your questions on a card. Tell him at the start of your session that you don’ t want him to leave until you’ve had the chance to ask about a few things on your list that concern you. Unfortunately, many good doctors forget that their patients have feelings, fears and apprehensions that may not be expressed. Of course, your doctor is on a busy schedule seeing other patients, but it’s not a valid excuse for skipping over vital information that you need to hear. Sometimes, as in your case, you’re going to have to take the lead and let him know what you expect from him.

● On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theater, where most of Shakespeare’s plays de-buted, burns down. The Globe was built in 1599 from the timbers of London’s very first permanent theater, Burbage’s Theater. The galleries could seat about 1,000 people, with room for another 2,000 “groundlings,” who could stand around the stage.

● On June 28, 1888, writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his family leave San Fran-cisco for their first visit to the South Seas. Stevenson, an adventurous traveler plagued by tuberculosis, was seeking a healthier cli-mate. His novel “Treasure Island” was pub-lished in 1883.

● On June 27, 1922, the American Library Association awards the first Newbery Medal, honoring the year’s best children’s book, to “The Story of Mankind” by Hendrik Willem van Loon. The Newbery Medal seeks to encourage originality and excellence in the field of children’s books.

● On June 26, 1948, in response to the So-viet blockade of land routes into West Berlin, the United States begins a massive airlift of food, water and medicine to the citizens of the besieged city. For nearly a year, supplies from American planes sustained the more than 2 million people in West Berlin.

● On June 25, 1956, the last Packard rolls off the production line at Packard’s plant in Detroit. The classic American luxury car used the famously enigmatic slogan “Ask the Man Who Owns One.”

● On June 30, 1962, Sandy Koufax strikes out 13 batters and walks five to lead the Brooklyn Dodgers over the New York Mets 5-0 with his first career no-hitter. Koufax went on to throw three more no-hitters, in-cluding a perfect game on Sept. 9, 1965, in which he allowed no hits and no walks.

● On July 1, 1979, the Sony Walkman -- the world’s first low-cost, portable music player -- goes on sale in Japan. The initial production run of 30,000 units looked to be too ambitious, as only 3,000 were sold at $150 apiece in the first month. Some 200 million sales later, Sony retired the cassette Walkman in 2010.

Ice Was a Luxury in Victorian Era Q: Enclosed is a photo of a silver tankard that has been in our family for some-where around 100 years. On the bottom are the words, “Barbour Silver Co. -- Quadruple -- 50.” What can you tell me about the history and value of my tankard?

A: You have a Victorian tilting ice pitch-er with a matching goblet and stand. It was made around 1880 by Barbour Silver Co. in Connecticut. “Quadruple” means your pitcher is silver plate rather than sterling silver. Available ice was a luxury in the Victorian era. Silver plate ice pitchers were a symbol of wealth and status. They are lined with metal, glass or porcelain to help keep ice from melting quickly. Few tilting ice pitchers have survived with their stands and goblets intact. Similar pitchers that are in excellent condi-tion and not in need of re-silvering are selling in the range of $300 to $600.

Q: I found among my collection of old books a 1949 copy and first edition of “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller. It was pub-lished by Viking. It has the original dust jacket with a small tear. Unfortunately, it is not signed by the author. Please let me know what you can find out about it. Is it worth anything?

A: “Death of a Salesman” was a Pulitzer Prize winning play that has become an American classic. Joseph Hirsch designed the dust cover. Values for a 1949 first-edition copy start at $1,000 and go up to around $2,500, depending on the condition. Signed copies sell in the range of $4,500 to $10,000.

Q: This is a photo of the mark that is on a set of dinnerware that belonged to my grandmother. Each dish is decorated with a

white background, pink borders and gold trim. I would like to purchase some more pieces. I contacted a replacement firm, and they weren’t able to help me. Do you have any idea of its val-ue and where I might be able to buy additional place settings?

A: The Royal Tettau mark was used by Royal Bayreuth in Bavaria, Germany, during the oc-cupation by the U. S. of the German zone from 1945 to 1949. There are several matching/replacements sites on the Internet. Keep checking for additional ones, as well as at antiques shops. The replacement services usually request a photo, a clear description of the dish and the manufacturer’s mark. A five-piece place setting would probably cost $50 to $75 purchased through a replacement service.

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing

Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.

As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.

For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.

Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.

And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations

during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.

But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.

Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.

While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”

Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

Women Weaken Legs Mickey Goldmill didn’t have too many rules for his fighters. But the ones he did have, he pretty much expected them to heed and obey. To lighten the load on his punch-drunk stable, he kept it very simple: Either listen to him, or he’s leaving you all alone when you try and fight the big fight. Rocky Balboa, a heavyweight southpaw with a 44-20 record, learned that the hard way. He wasn’t impressed with Rocky’s hoodlum life and booted him from the gym. “You’re a bum,” Goldmill declares. But we all know how this story ends. By a freak chance, Rocky is given a shot at the title, and Goldmill gets back in Rocky’s corner -- but with a few caveats: 1) He must catch a chicken with his bare hands and, 2) He must keep his hands off of the ever-so-cute pet-shop clerk Adrian. “Women weaken legs!” Goldmill warned. These harpies will sap your physical strength by bogging you down in bed: They’ll sap your testos-terone dry, wreak havoc with your mind and do all of these things just before your championship bout. True or not, that rule (which many scientists dis-pute, but what do they know about science?) was dragged out onto the mats and body-slammed 11 years later by Linda Fiorentino in the ‘80s era clas-sic “Vision Quest.” “Rocky” is arguably the best boxing movie in history, but when it comes to the world of wres-tling -- real wrestling, not the Saturday-morning car-toon stuff -- there is absolutely no doubt that “Vision Quest” takes the title. Matthew Modine (playing Louden Swain in the film) exhibits the hunger and desire of a cham-pion in ways far more complex than Sly Stallone’s Rocky did. His character is a classic portrayal of the hyper-hormonal, mentally mangled, girl-crazy high-school wrestler. Unlike Stallone’s Rocky, however, Modine’s Louden Swain actively pursues his fight with the seemingly unbeatable “Shute” and does so for classic guy reasons: Because he’s there and because Linda Fiorentino said so. Talia Shire, the Zooey Deschanel of her day, melted our hearts when she told Rocky to “win, Rocky, win.” Fiorentino (a native Philadelphian, by the way), lights us on fire when she breaks into the men’s locker room and orders Louden to stand up to Shute and “kick his a__.” Sure, some women might weaken legs, but the ones that fuel your desire and threaten to break your legs if you don’t win? All apologies to Mickey Goldmill, his well-tested theories and Jennifer Grey who, as “Baby” would never be caught dead in one, when it comes to a babe like Linda Fiorentino, it’s probably best to have her in your corner, ya know?

Initiate Your Swing with a Trigger in the Legs

Have you ever stood over the ball and looked out to thetarget in the distance and thought “ok now what”? Manygolfers’ face this dilemma of standing over their ball ataddress and have no idea how to trigger their takeaway.Sometimes starting the swing can be the most difficult thingto do! Here are my keys to getting the swing started tocreate a great shot. I think the key to a great swing is to work it from the groundup; feet, knees, hips, shoulders and then into the arms andhands. To often I see higher handicappers swing too muchwith their arms and not utilize the stronger muscles of thelegs. Trigger your swing by relaxing your legs softly downand allow the arms to drift straight back along the targetline (as seen in the photo). The two things that you are trying to do in the takeawaywhich leads into the backswing is to 1) store up power forthe forward swing through the ball 2) direct the golf clubalong the target line with a square clubface. It my Empowered Golf strategy to have the legs be thepower source in the golf swing, since they are the strongestmuscles in the body. I think it is key that the legs trigger theswing by starting tall at address, which will allow them toflex, or load downward, to begin the motion of thebackswing, this in turn will be like loading up a spring forpower in the forward swing. The next thing you need to do is to get the golf club movingin the correct path back away from the ball. It is my Empowered Golf strategy to have the golf club control thedirectional motion of the ball. This is controlled through theshoulders, arms and hands to reference the club to thetarget line in the takeaway. Notice in the picture how I havethe golf club moving straight back along the target line(white line) as my legs are loading downward to store uppower for the forward swing.

Initiate your swing with atrigger in the legs Have you ever stood over the ball at address, looked out to the distant target and thought, “OK, now what?” Many golfers face this dilemma sim-ply because they don’t know how to trigger their takeaway. Sometimes just starting the swing can be the most difficult part of the process! Here are my key steps in getting your swing started to create a great shot: The first key is to work it from the ground up; feet, knees, hips, shoulders and then the arms and hands. All too often I see high handicappers swing too much with their arms and not utilize the more powerful muscles of the lower body. It is my Empowered Golf Strategy to have the strength of the legs be the power source. Start tall at address and then let your legs flex down slightly as you begin the backswing, as shown in the photo. This is much like loading tension in a spring mechanism. As you do this, bring the clubhead back in the takeaway motion and guide it along the target line (white line in the photo). The clubhead, the di-rectional source of the swing, is controlled through the shoulders, arms and hands. Once your back-swing has reached its limit, the legs are now load-ed and ready to supply the power you need for the forward swing and a great fairway shot!
