Not originally scripted that way, it was due to all of the problems Spielberg and the crew had with the mechanical sharks that were used during filming. • Three different mechanical sharks were employed during the filming of “Jaws.” All were nicknamed “Bruce” after Steven Spielberg’s attorney, Bruce Ramer. • All three mechanical versions of “Bruce” proved unreliable from the beginning of the shoot. The animatronics stalled the first time one was put in the water, and the sharks sank to the seafloor several times, leaving divers scrambling to recover them. • After completing the filming of “Jaws,” the studio had so little confidence in the film that

America has erected a number of monuments honoring the memory of our fallen veterans who gave their lives to protect our country’s freedom. In recognition of our national observance of Memorial Day, Tidbits looks at two of these respected monuments of remembrance.

•TheVietnamVeteransMemorial inWashing-ton, D.C., honors service members of the U.S.armed forceswho fought in theVietnamWar, aswell asmemberswhodied in servicein Vietnam/Southeast Asia, and those un-accounted for (Missing In Action). Its black granite panels are inscribed with the names of the 58,272 who died or remain missing from the war. About three million people visit this site every year.

•TheWallwastheideaofJanScruggs,acorporalwhoservedinVietnamin1969-1970aspartofthe199thLightInfantryBrigade.Thememorialrecognizes the sacrifice of all those who served.

•In1979,Scruggsandagroupofvets foundeda nonprofit organization to raise funds for theproject and raisednearly $9million fromprivate contributions, with no federal funds used.

•In 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed thelegislation that provided the site near the Lincoln Memorial. It was decided to hold

a contest for anyone wishing to submit an appropriate layout plan for the monument site, with a $50,000 prize awarded to the winner. In 1981, a jury of eight architects and sculptorsunanimously selected a design submitted by MayaYing Lin, a 21-year-oldYaleUniversityarchitecture student fromAthens, Ohio. Lin’sdesignwasselectedfrom1,421entries.

•Groundbreaking took place in March 1982,andtheWall’sofficialdedicationtookplaceinNovemberof that year.Eachof theV-shapedmonument’s two sections is 246.75 feet longand consists of 70 inscribed panels. Thenames were not carved by hand but rather by acomputerizedtypesettingprocess.Theblackgranite came from India, one of only three places in the world where this volume of black granite in large sizes could be found.

•The first casualty of the war was RichardFitzgibbon,whodiedinJune1956.Thenameof his son is also etched in the granite; he was a casualtyinSeptember1965.

the three Bruces were dumped on the Universal back lot. No efforts were made to preserve them, and none of the three original sharks remain.

• A fourth “Bruce” was made from the same mold as those used in the film. Although it never had a place in the filming of “Jaws,” it was employed at the Universal Theme Park from 1975 to 1990.

• In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic “The Birds,” people in a California beach town are suddenly terrorized by swarms of birds. As outlandish as the premise sounds, it was inspired by an actual incident only two years before where birds in Monterey Bay suddenly began crashing into local houses.

• Years later, the strange real-life occurrence that inspired “The Birds” was explained as the result of toxic algae in the birds’ water supply.

• In the story of the 1976 suspense blockbuster “The Omen,” a couple (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) takes on the care of an orphan who, it turns out, may literally be the devil’s spawn. The strange occurances in the filming of this movie were so remarkable it inspired the documentary “The Curse of the Omen.”

• Incredibly, three airplane flights associated with “The Omen” were struck by lightning at the time filming was in progress. Among those onboard during the three separate incidents were actor Gregory Peck, screenwriter David Seltzer and executive producer Mace Neufeld.

• The hotel that Neufeld was staying in during the “The Omen” filming was the target of an IRA bombing, and a local restaurant frequented daily by the cast and crew was bombed with numerous lives lost. Fortunately, neither cast nor crew were present in either incident.

• The special effects coordinator of the Omen

film was also shaken by a strange incident when driving in Holland during the time of the filming. His car suddenly went out of control and crashed. When he got out, he was startled to see the that the road sign read “Ommen, 66.6 km.” The date was Friday the 13th.

• In terms of sheer danger to life and limb during a film shoot, the 1925 epic “Ben-Hur” absolutely tops the list. The chariot race in the film is still renowned for its bloodiness and stark realism. This is because the race itself was completely real.

• “Ben-Hur’s” director Fred Niblo wasn’t happy with the initial footage of the race scenes, so he had it staged again. But the second time, he told the chariot stunt drivers that the winner of the race would be awarded a cash prize equivalent to more than $1,000 in today’s money. With this kind of incentive, the chariot drivers got very serious about coming in first. Many took dangerous, life-threatening chances and made daredevil maneuvers in their determination to win. The competition was so fierce that there was a massive pile-up of men, horses and chariots midway around the track. The other drivers narrowly avoided running over them as they sped to the finish line. Director Niblo was delighted with the entire take and captured it all on film for posterity.

• In another “Ben Hur” scene, a violent hand-to-hand battle that was to ensue between two ships’ crews proved equally as dangerous. Italian extras were recruited and intentionally separated by political affiliation, pro-fascist or anti-fascist. After separating the two groups of politically-opposed extras, the men were given prop swords that had actually been slightly sharpened for “realism.” The violent clash between the opposing men was quite real, as was much of the blood splatters on them.

• In Howard Hughes’ misbegotten 1956 epic “The Conqueror,” John Wayne played Genghis Khan. Filming was disastrous from the very start, when a sudden flash flood nearly claimed the entire film crew and equipment.

• Soon after, “The Conqueror’s” lead actress, Susan Hayward, was attacked by a panther. Although injured, she survived the attack and managed to carry on with the filming.

• Much of the filming of “The Conqueror” took place in St. George, Utah during summer. Temperatures during the filming regularly

topped 120 degrees, and the cast and crew were kept in constant misery. Unbeknownst to all of them, not far away in Yucca Flats, Nevada, were the military testing grounds for the atomic bomb.

• A total of eleven atomic bombs were tested in Yucca Flats during filming of “The

1. Which epic film was the 1956 Oscar winner for Best Picture?

2. What movie did the American Film Institute choose as the best of all time?

One of the most famously embattled movie shoots was Francis Ford Coppola’s1979 film about Vietnam, “Apocalypse Now.” The film was loosely based on the classic Joseph Conrad novel, “Heart of Darkness.” Al Pacino was initially offered the starring role (played by Martin Sheen in the film) but turned it down. Pacino said he didn’t want to get stuck “in a swamp or five months.” The production ended up taking a full 16 months.

● Those who study such things say that more Frisbee-type discs are sold ev-ery year in the U.S. than footballs, base-balls and basketballs combined.

● People sometimes fight over the sil-liest things. Countries, too. For example, in 1925, Greece and Bulgaria were at war for 10 days, all because of a dog. Evidently, tensions were high in October of that year, when a Greek soldier’s dog ran away from him -- across the border. The soldier chased his dog into Bulgaria, where he was shot dead by a sentry. In retaliation, the Greek army invaded, and the League of Nations had to step in to restore order to the region.

● There is a species of frog found in Indonesia that breathes entirely through its skin; it has no lungs at all. *** Thought for the Day: “Everyone, in some small sacred sanctuary of the self, is nuts.” -- Leo Rosten

Among the hundreds of actors and actresses that have graced our TVs or movie screens, there are some fascinating, little-known stories about the paths they took to get there. Here are some quick highlights of a few such individuals that you’re sure to recognize. • Although Elvis wasn’t primarily an actor

(though he did appear in 31 movies between 1956 and 1969), his eighth grade teacher would certainly have encouraged him to pursue an acting career over anything musical. After hearing the 13-year-old strum his borrowed guitar and sing, she told him outright that he had “absolutely no aptitude for singing.” Fortunately for the rest of the world, he listened to his inner voice instead of his teacher and went on to become the best-selling recording artist of all time.

• Emmy-nominated actress Jane Lynch of the hit Fox show “Glee” got her first break from doing commercials for Frosted Flakes. She struck up a friendship with the commercials’ director, Christopher Guest. Later he would use his influence to cast her for big spotlight roles in his films “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind.”

• People strongly associate John Travolta with his starring role as Danny Zuko in the smash movie version of “Grease.” Yet five years earlier another future star played the same role in a small theater production of “Grease.” He was a then little-known wannabee star named Richard Gere.

• Before he became the blockbuster superstar we know from such movies as “Rain Man” and “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise considered a far different calling: the priesthood. Reflecting on those early days, Cruise recalled, “I looked at the priesthood and said, ‘This is what I’m going to do.” Fortunately for Hollywood, he ultimately decided not to become “Father

Cruise” and chose instead to see if there might be a future for him in acting.

• At one time, there might have also been a “Father Akroyd.” While Dan Akroyd was a mail sorter for Canada’s national postal service, he also intended to become a Catholic priest.

• Before becoming the world-famous director of the two highest-grossing movies of all time, “Titanic” and “Avatar,” James Cameron made his living as a bus driver.

• Long before winning an Oscar in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in “Jerry Maguire,” Cuba Gooding Jr. worked as a back-up dancer for Lionel Richie. If you look carefully at a video of Richie performing at the 1984 Olympics, you’ll see Gooding among the dancers with him on the stage.

• Mick Jagger once considered a more stable calling than “internationally famous rock star.” He originally studied at the London School of Economics to be an accountant.

• Legendary actor Christopher Lee — who has appeared in over 275 movies and shows in his long, illustrious career — was once a heroic figure in another life, too. He was a Special Operations Executive during World War II, serving as part of an elite unit commissioned directly by Winston Churchill.

• Also serving in this unit with Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Many of Bond’s adventures were actually modeled after Fleming’s own experiences with the elite commando unit.

• Kurt Russell has been on our TVs and movie screens since the 1970s, but did you know he was also a champion athlete? Before an injury sidlined him, Russell played minor league baseball. His batting average when he retired was an incredible .586! He was a pretty good race car driver also, winning six national

• In the late ‘70s, Tim Allen spent two years in prison for dealing cocaine before turning his life around. Then in 1985, Allen played a mechanic in a commercial for which he was paid $200.

• Lucille Ball was fired from an ice cream shop for not remembering to add bananas to banana splits. Before her acting career she was a model for fur coats at Hattie Carnegie’s in New York.

• Steve Carell was once a mail sorter in Acton, Massachusetts, but says he quit after a few months because he was “very, very bad at it.” ■

Q: My husband said he read some-where that Breckin Meyer is leaving “Franklin & Bash” because he has a new comedy on TBS. Please tell me that isn’t true. -- Kellie K., via e-mail

A: The only part that is true is that Breckin does indeed have a new comedy called “Men at Work” on TBS, which premieres Thursday, May 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The multicamera com-edy, which Breckin created, writes and executive produces, stars Danny Master-son, James Lesure, Michael Cassidy and Adam Busch. Breckin told me a bit about his new show when we spoke the oth-er day: “Honestly, it’s a show based on my life and the embarrassing relationships I’ve had. It’s about four guys who are all at different stages of their lives relationship-wise, and they have each other’s backs. It’s based on me and my friends.” As for Breckin making a cameo, he played coy: “I don’t know -- we’ll see. There might be an Alfred Hitchcock-like walkthrough. Hopefully we’ll have some better guest stars than just me.” Speaking of guest stars, as “Franklin & Bash” gears up for its second season -- premiering Tuesday, June 5, on TNT -- Breckin revealed: “We have an unbelievable line of guest stars this season. Sean Astin plays a superhero. Seth Green and Eric Mabius come on as the ‘Bizarro’ Franklin and Bash. Cybill Shepherd guest-stars. And we actually get to meet Mark Paul Gosselaar’s mom this time around, who’s played by Jane Seymour.” ***

Q: When will my favorite show, “Rookie Blue,” be returning for another season? Please say it hasn’t been canceled! -- Olaf D., St. Paul, Minn.

A: “Rookie Blue” will indeed be back for its third season on Thursday, May 24, at 10 p.m. ET/

PT on ABC. Now entering their third year on the job, our five rookie cops have learned to overcome the sophomore curse -- knowing a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Having seen the premiere episode, I can tell you that it is indeed one that fans won’t want to miss! ***

Q: I love everything that the talented Sarah Chalke does. When will she get her own show? -- Jason R., via e-mail

A: Sarah is slated to star in the new ABC comedy called “How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life,” in which Brad Garrett and Elizabeth Perkins play the aforementioned parents. Sarah plays Polly, a recently divorced single mom who moves in with her eccentric parents, Elaine and Max. The show is set to premiere this fall. ***

Q: I am hooked on “Once Upon a Time.” Will it be back for a second season? -- David T., St. Louis

A: As of this writing, no official word has come from ABC, but you can bet the farm that the top-rated drama series, which has smashed viewing records each week, definitely will be back for anoth-er season.

How to Find a Financial Advisor You Can Trust Dear Mary: My husband has been han-dling our finances, but he was recently diag-nosed with dementia. I feel so overwhelmed with everything. He has already forgotten to pay some bills, so I have gotten involved with our finances. My husband wants to sell our home, but houses aren’t selling in our area -- and I really don’t want to sell. We’re looking into refinancing. We need to get out of debt. I don’t know where to start with all this. -- Rhea, via email

Dear Rhea: It’s time for you to step in and take over the household finances. If you have not been involved all along, just plan on it being daunt-ing. Make an appointment with a fee-only financial advisor, who will charge you a flat fee based on an hourly rate, rather than try to sell you financial products to earn a commission. Once you have this appointment, gather to-gether all of your financial information that you can find or know about, and take it with you. Go alone to this meeting so you will be free to speak openly with this counselor. You may also need to speak with an attorney who can work with your husband’s doctor to give you power of attorney over future legal and financial matters. I am so sorry that you are facing this situ-ation, but now is not the time for a pity party. You need to move into the role of family decision-mak-er, diplomatically and lovingly. The National Asso-ciation of Personal Financial Advisors has a list of fee-only advisors in your area on its website, www.NAPFA.org. * * * Dear Mary: After my children left for college, I decided to go back, too. I am getting my education paid by financial aid, but I also qualify for student loans at a very low inter-

est rate. I don’t need the loans for tuition, but wonder if I should use them to pay off my car, and then use the car payments to pay off the student loans? It makes sense to me, but what do you think? -- Pamela, via email

Dear Pamela: This might look like a good idea on paper, but be very cautious. Unless you have demonstrated a high level of financial maturi-ty and personal discipline in the past, you could be stepping into a trap. Will you really make the same car payments you’re making now to your student debt, even though not required? Should something happen that prevents you from working now (I as-sume you have a job), finishing school or working in the future, how will you make those student loan payments? A traditional car loan could be repaid or discharged through a variety of methods, from selling the car to voluntary repossession or even bankruptcy. If you move that debt to a student loan, you will lose all of those options. Before you know it, you’ll be tempted to consolidate the student debt to a 10-, 15- or 30-year payment schedule, which would be a terrible mistake. I wish you well in mak-ing this decision.

Mental Health Help From the VA Depression. Post-Traumatic Stress Disor-der. Substance abuse. Thoughts of suicide. Trauma from sexual assault. Anxiety. If you’re a veteran with any of these mental-health struggles, there is help via the Department of Veterans Affairs. You can take a big step forward in getting help for yourself or a veteran family member by go-ing to the VA’s website, www.mentalhealth.va.gov. Click on: --Screening tools: You’ll find screening tests for depression, PTSD and substance abuse, includ-ing drugs and alcohol. --Where to get help: Click on the green HELP graphic, and you’ll find tabs for getting help right now (if you are in crisis, call 1-800-273-8255 and press “1”), program locators and treatment info. Click on the map graphic to find the nearest VA facil-ity. Use the drop-down menu to find the type of facil-ity you need. There is a special PTSD link on the left side of the screen. --If you’re having suicidal thoughts (or if there is a veteran you’re worried about): If you can get to a computer, consider checking in with the Vet-erans Crisis Online chat. Someone is there 24 hours a day. Go to www.mentalhealth.va.gov and click Suicide Prevention on the left side of the screen. (Or go to http://veteranscrisisline.net/) You also can send a text message to 838255. You don’t have to be enrolled in VA health care to get help. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinse-ki recently announced that the VA would be adding 1,600 more mental-health clinicians -- nurses, psy-chologists, social workers, psychiatrists -- plus 300 more support staff. The need is great -- 1.3 million veterans were helped with mental-health services last year -- and that number will only increase. If you need help, it’s there. Don’t wait. Just take the first step.

Summertime Pests Summer brings outdoor fun, warm weather and a closer relationship with Mother Nature and all her offspring -- including pests that can affect your dog’s health. This time of year, vets see more dogs who are eating their normal fare but experiencing weight loss. This could be caused by a lot of things, but any dog who eats what he normally eats and suddenly starts losing weight needs to see a veterinarian. Among other things, this is a symptom of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), which is caused by a parasitic worm that infests the pulmonary arteries after the dog has been bitten by a mosquito that has previous-ly bitten an infected dog. The disease is life threaten-ing and must be treated promptly. Other signs of an infected dog include cough-ing after physical exertion and labored breathing. You could protect your dog by avoiding exposure to mosquitoes, but that’s impossible if he goes outside when mosquitoes are in season. So the best protec-tion is preventive medication for heartworm, which can only be administered if your dog has not been infected. Unfortunately, there is no protection against the West Nile virus, also carried by the pesky mos-quito. Keep your dog indoors at sunset and during the early evening hours when those disease-laden pests are hunting for blood. Puppies abound this time of year, and they start their basic vaccinations at about 6 to 8 weeks of age. Follow-ups continue every four to six weeks until the pup reaches about 4 months of age. Until that time, your pup isn’t protected from some of the more prominent and serious diseases -- distemper and parvovirus -- and it’s best to keep him out of dog parks and group obedience classes until he is. Internal and external parasites are big prob-lems, especially now. Beware of fleas, ticks, flies and lice, all of which carry disease and cause serious allergic reactions. Fleas also transmit internal para-sites. What can you do about these pests? Inspect your dog regularly. Look beneath the fur to the skin for signs of fleas and for ticks. Check him head to toe. Fleas are sneaky little buggers, and there is more than one variety. Some prefer ears. Others lurk in armpits. And when you come look-ing for them, they scatter so rapidly that you’ll miss them if you are not diligent. If your dog is scratching

frantically or digging into his skin ferociously with his teeth, you can be sure you have a problem that needs tending. There are many types of flea protec-tion, so ask your veterinarian which kind is best for your dog. Embedded ticks must be removed immedi-ately and disposed of, and this is no easy task. You may want your vet to handle this. Ticks cause blood loss and eventual anemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other blood diseases; the most common today is Lyme disease. Once any and all pests have been removed from your dog, treat your home with a thorough cleaning and the use of an appropriate, nontoxic pes-ticide. Disinfect all areas, including your dog’s bed-ding. If your home is infested, a professional exter-minator may be the best choice. Woof!

PSAs ill-Advised in Men of Warren Buffett’s Age Warren Buffett’s recent disclosure that he has been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer made front-page news in virtually every newspaper and business website in the nation. The billionaire investor is 81, and questions have long been raised about who would be his suc-cessor as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. At his age, Buffett has an average life ex-pectancy of 8-10 years and fortunately, the chanc-es that prostate cancer will shorten his life are very small. The biopsies to diagnose the cancer and the adverse effects of any form of surgery, radiothera-py or chemotherapy pose a far greater risk. Should his doctors have screened him for prostate cancer? Most experts believe that no tests should be done unless symptoms are present that suggest a problem. Buffett had an elevated pros-tate-specific antigen test, or PSA that suggests the presence of prostate cancer. However, the use of the PSA has come under intense fire. In 2008, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended against us-ing the test in men over 75. Their rationale was its notorious unreliability as well as the fact that PSA levels are frequently elevated in older men for other reasons. Furthermore, while prostate cancer is more common in this age group, the chances of the disease causing symptoms and shortening life expectancy are small. Recently, the task force recommended that the PSA not be tested in healthy men of any age. While this has created some debate, virtually every expert on prostate cancer agrees that measuring the PSA level in men over the age of 65 is of no value and does not prolong life; even for younger men, the benefits are small. The thinking now is that PSA tests should be limited to men at a high risk of developing prostate cancer, including those with a strong fam-ily history of the cancer, blacks and anyone with symptoms suggesting prostate cancer (blood in the urine, for example). Based upon all the available evidence,

there is little chance the cancer will cause Buffett to experience symptoms or lead to his death. On the other hand, the diagnostic tests and treatment may cause serious problems. Buffett has had multiple biopsies, which can cause severe bleeding and a chance of a serious infection that, on occasion, is difficult to treat. Buffett was 1 of 1 million U.S. men estimated to have had a prostate biopsy in the past year. Of those, 3 out of 12 had a cancer, but for the majority, treatment was unnecessary. Buffett is being treated with radiation. Not only is there no evidence that his life will be pro-longed or symptoms prevented, the side effects are significant. Radiotherapy can lead to incontinence, persistent blood in the urine, chronic irritation of the bowel and bladder, and a higher risk of infection and impotence. These side effects are not rare. The Preventive Services Task Force has found that of the more than 1 million U.S. men treated by either surgery or radiotherapy or both from 1986 through 2005, about 5,000 died soon after treatment, up to 70,000 had serious complica-tions, 500,000 men had persistent blood in the se-men and about 250,000 were impotent, incontinent or both. Only Buffett and his physician know the true extent of his disease and any decision about treat-ment must be jointly decided by the physician and a fully-informed patient. For every physician who believes that screening should not be done, there are others who believe just as strongly that not do-ing the test or ignoring possible cancer may lead to the spread of the disease throughout the body and a painful death. While this may occur in only a very small or even a tiny fraction of patients, there are those who believe that saving a single life is worth it, no matter what. The message is clear. Be empowered and involved in your care. Warren Buffett studies every minor detail of a company before he considers an investment. The same amount of study and under-standing is needed in making a decision about a treatment that remains so disputed.

Gambling with Social Security I find it rather curious that baby boomers, many of whom, in their youth, decried the accumula-tion of wealth and the materialism of their parents, are the first generation in history to regard Social Security not as the safety net it was intended to be but rather as a pot of gravy to pour over their already meaty investment portfolios. I’m not saying this is a bad thing. In fact, it is just the opposite. People have always been encour-aged to plan for their retirement. And baby boomers have, by and large, done a good job of that. Social Se-curity was never meant to be a person’s sole source of income in retirement. Instead, it was meant to be one leg of the proverbial three-legged stool that should prop up your retirement nest egg -- the other two legs being a pension or IRA account and what-ever savings or other investments you are able to ac-cumulate throughout your working life. It’s just that all this focus on Social Security as an investment, sometimes even as a gambling stake, is still a relatively new phenomenon -- espe-cially to a guy who spent most of the last 40 years helping folks sign up for Social Security. And almost all of those people simply applied for benefits at 62, or maybe 65 -- and just let the checks start rolling in without giving it too much thought. A Social Security check was simply something you got in your old age, and you used that check to pay the rent or buy gro-ceries. Today, more and more folks are trying to “game” the system -- doing their utmost to squeeze every last nickel out of their Social Security invest-ment. They are putting off taking Social Security

until age 70 in order to get a 32 percent “delayed retirement bonus.” Many are claiming benefits as a “dependent” husband or wife off of their spouse’s Social Security account at age 66, and then living off that smaller amount until age 70 when they switch to their own retirement account -- with that added bo-nus. Until the law was recently changed, others were filing for reduced Social Security benefits at 62 and investing every dime of that money while they lived off of other retirement accounts. Then at age 66, they would pay back all the benefits they received and file a new claim to get full benefits from that point on. They came out ahead of the game because they were able to pocket whatever interest they earned on the benefits received between age 62 and 66. The government realized they were essentially providing interest-free loans to wealthy retirees, so they put a stop to that practice. Again, I am not saying that treating Social Security as an investment is bad. Whatever you get from Social Security is your money, after all. And if you want to work within the rules to get the highest return out of that money -- well then, more power to you. But I have been more than a little taken aback by the obsession some people seem to have gambling with their Social Security benefits. People who delay their Social Security until 70 are throwing away tens of thousands, some approaching one hun-dred thousand dollars, in Social Security benefits, betting that they will live into their mid 80s to “beat the system.” But I’ve got to wonder, even if they live that long, will they really be able to enjoy their So-cial Security “winnings?” Lots of folks are taking that chance. And I can tell from the tone of their emails that they’re really not sure they are making the right wager. All of this came home very clearly to me recently after I offered my readers a copy of a fact sheet I called, “When to take your Social Security benefits.” It was intended to present people with the facts -- with the advantages and disadvantages of tak-ing reduced retirement benefits as early as 62 versus waiting until age 66, or even 70, to get full benefits. And I’m afraid I fed some people’s manic desire to gamble with their Social Security by offering some tips for “maximizing” one’s Social Security payout. Most of my readers take this advice for what it is worth. They will sit down, perhaps with a finan-cial planner or with someone at their local Social Se-

curity office, go over all the numbers, consider their options, and then make a rational decision based on the facts. But some of my readers aren’t being ratio-nal. They are going way overboard. They sent me lists with dozens of different options and asked me to help them make the right choice. Some sent me matrixes. Others sent me spreadsheets with more data on them than I’ve seen in the annual reports for major corporations. One guy had figured out what he would get from Social Security in 25 different scenarios: file at 62, die at 90; file at 66, die at 85; etc. He said he was losing sleep trying to figure out what to do! A little financial planning is good. But trying to squeeze every last nickel out of the system is maybe too much? And I noticed that almost all of the folks who sent me emails fretting over their Social Security de-cision were not between a rock and a hard place. They were, financially speaking, between a cushion and a soft place. No matter what they chose to do with their Social Security, they were going to be liv-ing very comfortable lives in retirement. My wife and I both took our Social Security benefits at age 62. It might not have been the smart-est decision in the world. But guess what? We don’t care. We are having way too much fun enjoying life and our retirement. So the message to my readers is this: study the information I give you; maybe give some second thoughts to delaying benefits too long; then make a decision about when to take your Social Security that you are comfortable with -- AND ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

Alzheimer’s Is Common Type of Dementia DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is the dif-ference between dementia and Alzheimer’s dis-ease? Are they the same? -- M.J.

ANSWER: “Dementia” is an encompassing word that includes many different conditions. Those conditions have some similar features that indicate an impairment or loss of important mental func-tions. The inability to retain new information, get-ting lost in familiar surroundings, difficulty choosing the proper words to express oneself, trouble doing simple arithmetic like adding and subtracting, the failure to recognize close relatives and friends, and showing poor judgment like dressing for winter in the middle of summer are signs of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease, Pick’s disease, vascu-lar dementia (dementia due to many small strokes), dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are but a few of the dementia illnesses. Each of these illnesses has special features that set it apart from the other dementing conditions. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common kind of dementia. People often use “dementia” when they mean “Alzheimer’s disease.” It’s best to give the exact name for the illness that is causing mental deterioration. The booklet on Alzheimer’s disease pro-vides the signs and symptoms of this illness. Read-ers who would like a copy can obtain one by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipi-ent’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What has hap-pened to the appendix? I never hear about ap-pendicitis anymore. Has the operation gone out of fashion? Or is there some other way to deal with it? -- R.P.

ANSWER: The appendix is still where it al-ways has been, dangling down from the first part

of the colon on the lower right side. Long thought not to have any purpose, it does appear to add to immune defenses and seems to produce products useful for the development of the fetus. We do well without it, though. Appendicitis has not gone out of fashion. It happens with the same regularity it always has. The age group most likely to suffer from it is the group between 10 and 19. Around 250,000 appen-dectomies are done yearly in the United States. Newer developments in the diagnosis of appendicitis include CT scans and ultrasound. Many surgeons now use a laparoscope to remove it. It’s a viewing instrument passed into the abdo-men through a small incision. Instruments also are inserted through similar small incisions. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don’t think my problem will impress you, but here I go. I refuse to wear a bathing suit in the summer because of all the spider veins on my legs, especially in the area of the ankles. How are they gotten rid of? I heard that tea bags work. Do they? -- E.L.

ANSWER: I’m not familiar with tea bags for spider veins. Other treatments do work well. Lasers can obliterate them. So can sclerotherapy. A doctor in-jects these tiny veins with a solution that causes them to wither and dry up. I’m sure you won’t have trouble finding a doctor who does these procedures. If you do have trouble, ask your family doctor for a referral.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an or-der form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Prepare Yourself toKeep Driving Longer Few of us want to even contemplate giv-ing up driving, but as the years keep adding up we need to consider that we will eventually see that dreaded day. None of us wants to give up our independence by having to surrender our car keys. We should be thinking long and hard about this, because there are actually steps we can take to prolong that day and help us keep driving longer. The American Automobile Association has put together a website full of valuable information for us: www.seniordriving.aaa.com. There you’ll learn how to: --Evaluate your driving ability: a 15-question self-rating tool, interactive driving evaluation and links to getting a professional assessment. --Understand mind and body changes: As we age, our vision and hearing might not be as good as they once were. The medications we take can affect us, too. Our reaction times can slow, but there are ways to learn to overcome that. --Improving driving skills: Everyday driv-ing can become challenging for us as we age, and unexpected situations can be downright dangerous. Click on the sections with tips for handling both everyday and unexpected situations on the road. Don’t miss the link to driver-improvement courses, especially the AAA’s Senior Defensive Driving Pro-gram. You can take the class online from home! --Maintaining mobility and independence: One of the best things we can do to keep driving longer is to stay physically and mentally fit. Click on the physical fitness techniques link. AAA has a series of stretches and exercis-es designed to improve neck, shoulder, trunk, back and overall flexibility. When you consider all the twisting and turning involved in getting in and out of the car and bending to put groceries in the trunk, it makes sense that we’ll do better if we stay limber. If you don’t have a computer, have a friend print out the brochures under Tools & Additional Resources.

Patience and Experience Wins Q: Our grandson is off to college in September, and he is eager to spread his wings. He is a hard working student, but as of yet, has not chosen a career path. Fortunately, he has the academic record to choose either a science or liberal arts curriculum. His father died ten years ago, and he often relies on my husband for sound advice. He has some questions about what course of study to follow toward a career that offers a good chance of finding a job when he graduates. Can you share some ideas we may not have thought of?

A: In this sorry economy we now find our-selves in, most students are well aware of how scarce good jobs are upon graduation. Since it will take your grandson several more years before he faces the sit-uation, time may be on his side. Maybe by the time he has his degree things will have turned around and the economic outlook will have improved. Finding a career that combines together one’s passion and natural ability is the ideal situation to hope for. The first two years of broad undergradu-ate study is when he will be exposed to new areas of study that may capture his interest and curiosity. Many college students switch their majors several times as they continue to discover new areas that in-terest them. Your grandson should try to settle on his major by his sophomore year to allow him time to complete all the prerequisite classes. What high school subjects captured his in-terest? What classes were the easiest for him to get the highest grades? Is he a people-oriented person or is he more interested in science and research? Networking through inside connections is always a better way of landing a position than com-ing through the front door with a job application. As grandparents who likely have a wide circle of ac-quaintences, do you have connections to people who could help in this area? During summer vacations, could he volunteer or find part-time work to broaden his base of experience? It’s been said that experience is the best teacher because it gives you individual instruction!

Q: These days, whether we are watching television or reading the newspaper, we find ourselves getting depressed and feeling negative! There's nothing but bad news coming from every direction --- socially, politically and economically. Our society appears to have lost its direction and is now headed down the wrong track. How are we supposed to stay positive?

A: I reluctantly have to agree with you. I blame our collective sour attitude on the media gatekeepers who seem to be convinced that only the bad news deserves attention. I believe that pessimism tends to feed on itself. It is self-fulfilling and grows its own destructive momentum. Most people seem to go along with the majority in shaping their outlooks and attitudes. We need to rethink our priorities and remind ourselves that although things aren't perfect, we don't have to let negative news make us negative people. As for me, I miss the can-do spirit I grew up with. During the Great Depression, we had no choice but to roll up our sleeves, dig in and solve our own problems. We knew what it was like to want and not get. In today’s world people want and expect instant gratification. The trouble is it takes to time to find solutions to our problems. Things like “saving for a rainy day” is a good example. People seem to have lost belief in the virtue of patience. But there is something all of us can do

to reverse this trend if only we tried. We could focus on maintaining a healthy, positive attitude, accepting and being thankful for what we have, and finding satisfaction in helping others.

Dear Doug

Creators News Syndicate

● On May 22, 1455, the battle of Eng-land’s War of the Roses begins in St. Al-bans, 20 miles northwest of London. The forces of House of York, whose badge was a white rose, defeated the red-rose House of Lancaster. Both families claimed the throne, and the war would stretch on for 30 years.

● On May 23, 1701, at London’s Ex-ecution Dock, British privateer William Kidd, popularly known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for piracy and murder after captur-ing a boat that was loaded with gold, jew-els, silk, sugar and guns. A colorful legend grew up around the story of Kidd, including reports of lost buried treasure.

● On May 21, 1881, in Washington, D.C., humanitarians Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons found the American National Red Cross, an organization established to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters.

● On May 26, 1897, horror writer Bram Stoker’s classic vampire tale, “Dracula,” is first offered for sale in London. Through fic-tional journal entries and letters written by the novel’s principal characters, “Dracula” tells the story of a Transylvanian vampire and his English victims.

● On May 24, 1917, after losing 373 Allied and neutral ships in one month because of attacks by German U-boat submarines, the British Royal Navy introduces a con-voy system, whereby all merchant ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean would travel in groups under the protection of the British navy.

● On May 27, 1963, Bob Dylan releases his second album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” which included future hits “Blowin’ In the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.”

● On May 25, 1977, the communist gov-ernment of China lifts its decade-old ban on the writings of William Shakespeare. Mao Tse-Tung’s 1966 revolution had banned any cultural work -- music, literature, film or theater -- that did not have the required ideological content. By the early 1970s Chi-na was desperate for new sources of trade, and the revolution was declared ended.

Best Sports Apps for Your iPad According to the Gartner Group, more than 66 million people purchased some type of tablet computer last year (myself included). There are thousands of applications for the iPad, Android and Windows-based tablets. Here are some of the Top 10 apps I’ve found for the sports fan with an iPad:

10. Flipboard This just may be the best application for the iPad, period. It allows users to pick up to 36 web-sites, Facebook or Twitter accounts and presents them in a magazine-like fashion. While not a sports app per se, it is easy enough to plug in your favorite teams and other sports information sites. Flipboard keeps it all in one central location. I use it every day.

9. Zite This app is CNN’s version of Flipboard, but with a twist. Like Flipboard, it presents the web, Facebook and Twitter like a magazine, but it sorts information by topic instead, and it lets you pick as many of them as you like from a pre-approved list. Again, one convenient location makes it easy and convenient to follow your favorite teams or sport.

8. The Masters Already outdated for this year, nonetheless, Augusta National came through with a truly excel-lent app for the most famous golf tournament in the world. Everything you’d expect from an app that focuses solely on one event, at one venue, is in-cluded. HD video, detailed maps of each hole and the history of the club and tournament are covered in exquisite detail and during the tournament, the scoreboard is active and there is a live feed from the course and a highlight reel. This is the standard that every tournament should be measured by.

7. Asphalt 6 This is a racing game that has great graph-ics and utilizes the iPad’s gyroscopic abilities in that you treat the tablet like a steering wheel. It’s pretty difficult and very fast-paced. (Don’t play it before bed -- your adrenaline will keep you up all night, and I speak from experience.) The game is free, and as you win races you earn points and get to upgrade to other car models. I’m not much of a game player, but this one has me hooked.

6. NBC Sports Talk I’ve found this to be the best “inside” sports-information app available. The stories are well-writ-ten, often a bit pithy but usually very insightful. Every major sport is covered in an easy-to-use interface, and it provides a daily schedule, scores, the Vegas line and even lets you buy tickets to an event. Far better than ESPN or any other sports-news app I’ve found to date.

MON., MAY 14Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle Figurine the Twinkle in Collectors’ Eyes Q: This is a photo of a music box figu-rine that I have. Several years ago, I bought a home and all its contents and found it stored in a closet. On the bottom, are the words “Schmid -- Musical Collectibles -- The Tale of Mrs. Tig-gy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter -- Warne Co., New York & London 1977 -- Hand Painted.” It stands about 7 inches tall, is in perfect condi-tion and plays “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.” Can you tell me anything about my mu-sic box?

A: Your porcelain music box figurine is a hedgehog washerwoman named Mrs. Tiggy-Win-kle. She was created by Beatrix Potter in the late 1900s. Potter was an English author, illustrator and conservationist who wrote children’s books. The “Tale of Peter Rabbit” is one of her most well-known books. Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was based on Potter’s pet hedgehog. Schmid and Co. was located in New York and was a distributor of decorative items. Freder-ick Warne and Co. was the original publisher of the book “The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle” in 1905. Pot-ter’s charming books are still being published. Your music box figurine was made in 1977. It is a popular collectible and sells in the range of $25 to $50.

Q: I would like to know if you can help me find out the value of my set of sterling silver flatware. I have place settings for 10 and also 6 serving pieces. The pattern is called “Proces-sional,” and it was made by Fine Arts Sterling Co.

A: From 1944 to 1979, Fine Arts Sterling Co. was a distributor for six sterling patterns made by International Sterling Co. “Processional” was made around 1947. The value of your set would probably be be-tween $2,000 and $4,000. * * *

Q: This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain water pitcher that was given to me by my mother-in-law. The color of the porcelain is spectacular, and I love it. It stands about 9 inches and has a sterling silver scrolled over-

lay, spout and handle. What can you tell me about the mark, the vintage and value of my pitcher?

A: “GDA” is the mark used by Gerard, Du-fraisseix and Abbot, in Limoges, France. Your pitcher is an example of art nouveau design and was made around 1900. It would probably be worth $300 to $500.

Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a gen-eral interest will be answered in this column. Due to the volume of inquiries, she cannot answer individual letters. The Smasher and the Simply Smashing

Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.

As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.

For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.

Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.

And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations

during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.

But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.

Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.

While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”

Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

The downhill bunker shot can be very in-timidating, but with the right setup you can feel more comfortable over the shot as well as enjoy better execution. Here’s what you need to focus on the next time you are faced with a downhill bunker shot:

in the center of your stance. This setup will encourage a steeper swing. You still want to ensure that you hit the sand behind the ball as you would a regular bunker shot, but the follow through should continue along the slope of the hill, remaining low and as open as possible. Don’t allow the club to turn over. The ball will come out lower than a normal bunker shot and there will be more topspin on the ball, causing it to roll further. By taking all of these factors into account your downhill bunker shots and your confi-dence in achieving them will quickly improve.

● Align your shoul-ders with the slope of the hill. Your shoul-ders should be paral-lel to the slope. To do this properly you will find that your weight is on the inside part of your left foot and your left shoulder is lower than your right. ● Ball position is critical. With a slight-ly open stance and club face, play the ball

Conqueror.” Not only were the actors and crew exposed to dusts blown over from the nuclear test site, filmmakers unknowingly shipped 60 tons of the radioactive dirt by rail back to Los Angeles for reshoots.

• One of the most recent series of bizarre incidents occured during the filming of Mel Gibson’s biblical epic, “The Passion of the Christ.” Actor James Caviezel, who portrays Jesus in the film, had a puzzling experience when a total stranger walked up and said, “You will be Jesus.” The incident occured six months before he had even heard about the Passion film.

• Mel Gibson said he received similar signs that seemed to suggest that he should go ahead with his plans to make this film. In one incident, a French woman, whom he had never met, appeared out of nowhere and said, “Jesus loves you.”

• During the whipping scene, Caviezel was struck several times with enough force by the cat o’ nine tails that the weighted ends actually whipped around his body, puncturing his skin and drawing blood. His facial winces during this scene were due in large part to the actual pain he experienced with each lash.

• Before he was to be placed on the cross in the crucifixion scene, Caviezel was struck by lightning. People started screaming as his hair stood out in a fuzzy ball, fire shot from the left side of his head and his body glowed a pinkish aura for several seconds. Miraculously, Caviezel survived the incident seemingly unscathed and was able to continue shooting the scene.

• The assistant director was also hit by lightning when a bolt struck the cross on which Caviezel was about to be “hung.” He, too, was uninjured.

• Before filming was finally completed, Caviezel had endured a case of hypothermia, a dislocated shoulder, and contracted both a lung infection and pneumonia. ■
