Life is tasteless without salt! In addition to providing seasoning, it’s an essential component of your blood, sweat and tears and is vital to the proper function of the human body. Want to read some interesting facts about this important commodity? Follow along and learn!• TheBible contains the firstwritten reference tosalt,recordedintheBookofJobaround2250B.C.Salt is mentioned in 31 other places, including the story of Lot’s wife, who disobeyed the warning ofangels.Assheandherfamilywerefleeingthedestruction of the wicked city of Sodom, she was told not to look back, but yeilding to her curiosity she turned to gaze at the awesome sight and was instantly transformed into a pillar of salt.
• There are two chief methods of producing salt;evaporation and mining. In the evaporation process, salty sea water is guided into large clay forms for natural evaporation by the sun. Sea salt is the source for about 80mineral elementsessential to proper body function, including iron, iodine, sulfur and magnesium.

● It was British-American poet T.S. El-iot who made the following sage observa-tion: “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.”
● Each fingernail on the Statue of Liberty is nearly a foot long.
● Filmmaker George Lucas is arguably best known for his “Star Wars” franchise, but he also directed “American Graffiti.” During the making of that earlier film, he designated each reel of film with an R be-fore the reel’s number, and each instance of dialog was prefixed with a D. At one point during the sound mixing, the sound design-er needed to use Reel 2, Dialog 2, and so asked for “R2D2.” Lucas liked the sound of it so much that he used it for the name of a robot character in his later work.
● You can tell a cranberry is ripe when it can be dribbled like a basketball.
● Those who study such things (and seemingly have too much time on their hands) say that a quarter has 119 grooves around the outside edge, while dimes have 118.
● Have you ever heard of a woman named Thelma Pickles? Unless you’re a somewhat obsessive fan of the Beatles, probably not. She was John Lennon’s first girlfriend.
● Among those who play basketball pro-fessionally, the men average 6 feet, 7 inch-es tall, while the women average an even 6 feet.
● If you’re a vegetarian, you’re part of the 3 percent of American adults who shun meat. In India, though, you’d be part of a much larger minority; nearly a third of the population of that country is vegetarian.

You might have heard that camels are oftenreffered to as “ships of the desert,” but what else do you know about this unusual animal? We were curious too, so we got busy and found some interesting facts to share. Follow along and learn more about this unique and extremely useful creature of the desert! • One humpor two?Aone-hump camel is of
Arabian descent and is known as the dromedary. The two-humpedAsian variety is called theBactrian.Despitethehumpytopographyofitsback, the camel’s spine is staight, not arched, as you might expect.
• Although subjected to East Asia’s blisteringsummers where temperatures average well over 100ºF, camels are also able to endureseverewintertemperaturesofminus20ºF.
•Althoughaclose-uplookatthesecreaturesmaybring to mind the term “homely,” the camel’s name actually comes from the Arabic word meaning “beauty.”
•Acamelisanungulate,inotherwords,amam-
mal with hooves. Each foot has two toes and a pad, and the pads spread as it walks, distributing its weight and enabling it to maneuver on soft sand without sinking. The camel’s body isspecially designed to protect itself from sand. It has three eyelids to protect the eyes from blowing sand and can also close its nostrils as a defense. Like the cow, camels are ruminants, meaningtheyhaveamulti-chamberedstomach.
•Thecamel’slegsareverythin, yettheyareableto support not only the 1,500 pounds of thecamel’s body weight, but a heavy cargo load upto1,000pounds.Travelingatarateof2to3 miles per hour, they are able to keep up this pacefor6or7hoursaday.Camelscansensewhen its cargo is off center and will refuse to carry loads that are not properly balanced.
•Camelsinstinctivelyknowtheirownenduranceand will refuse to move beyond it. If their masters try to drive them farther, they will lie down and refuse to budge.
• Ifyou think thecamel’shumpisa reserveofwater to help him through the hot desert, you areonlypartlyright.Thehump,risingabout30inchesoutofthebody,isactuallyfat,upto80pounds worth, that the animal can metabolize for caloric energy and hydration as needed.
•As the camel travels great distances withoutsustenance, it uses up the moisture and fat calories it has stored and often arrives at its destination with a flabby hump, or no humpat all! A camel is able to tolerate the loss of a full third of its body mass. A human would die of cardiac failure after sweating away only a small percent of body weight. When the camel is ready to replenish its water supply, it candrinkinover25gallonsinonly3minutes!
•A camel has the ability to carefully preserveits body’s hydration by increasing its own body temperature, thus preventing sweating and subsequent water loss. Its nostrils also trap watervaporandreturnit tothebody’sfluids. In addition, the green plants the camel ingests contain moisture that further contributes to its hydration. It’s not unusual for a camel to endure several weeks or to travel up to 100miles without water. Curiously, camels seemto prefer resting in sunlight, even if shade is available.
•Although the camel might appear clumsy orungainly, it can actually run up to 40 milesper hour in a short burst and sustain longer distancesat25milesperhour.
•Manyof thedeserts’nomadictribescountoncamelmilk as one of their staple foods.Themilk is rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins and is lower in fat and cholesterol than cow’s

milk. Bedouins frequently process it into anutritious drinkable yogurt, and some of these roaming tribes live on nothing but camel milk for six months. Camel milk is also the onlymilk that doesn’t curdle when boiled.

Q: Who is the beautiful young woman who plays Lilith on my favorite show, “True Blood”? Can you tell me anything about her? -- Bobby R., via email
A: Jessica Clark made quite an impression on “True Blood” view-ers when she made her naked, bloody debut as the “moth-er of all vampires” back in July. Jessica herself is a “True Blood” fangirl and was thrilled to get the chance to be on one of her favorite shows. She eventually got used to the show’s “na-ked rite of passage,” telling me recently: “After the first, second, third take, you just kind of go: ‘OK, I’m naked. You’ve seen it.’ Most of the cast has been through it in some shape or form, so everyone is su-per supportive. The cast and crew are respectful and professional, but funny as well. Everyone was like: ‘Welcome to ‘True Blood.’ Here’s another Thurs-day.’” It also was tough keeping her role as Lilith a secret from family and friends: “It was something the show wanted to keep under wraps, because it’s been building all season. Part of the fun and the mystery of ‘True Blood’ is that you’re never quite sure what’s going to happen. So, I couldn’t tell anybody.” ***
Q: I am so bummed that “Unforget-table” was canceled. I love Poppy Montgomery in just about everything she’s in! Any chance we can convince CBS to bring it back? -- Britney F., via email
A: In a rare turnabout, CBS recently de-cided to un-cancel the procedural drama, which stars Poppy and former “Nip/Tuck” star Dylan Walsh. After the May cancellation, the series was being shopped around to other networks, including TNT and Lifetime, when CBS decided to give it another go. “Unforgettable” will return with 13 all-new epi-sodes in summer 2013. ***
Q: Earlier this year, I read about a man who allegedly killed his wife while scuba diving on their honeymoon in Australia. Then I believe I saw an interview with Harvey Kei-tel, and it was mentioned that he’s starring in a movie about the woman’s death. Is that true? If so, when will it come to theaters? -- David W. in Alabama
A: Mr. Keitel is indeed starring as Tommy Thomas, the father of Tina Watson, whose suspi-cious scuba-diving fatality made headlines all over the world when her husband was accused of orches-trating her death for insurance money. But you don’t have to go out to a movie theater to see “Fatal Honey-moon”; the movie premieres on Lifetime Television Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT (with re-airings throughout that weekend and the next -- check your local list-ings). ***
Q: Since they wrapped up the Rosie Larsen murder on “The Killing,” will it be back for another season? -- Ron A., Bangor, Maine
A: It saddens me to report that AMC has decided not to pick up “The Killing” for a third sea-son. At least we found out who killed Rosie Larsen.

If you need an attorney as a result of a serious personal injury, there are certain things you should consider.
We feel it is inappropriate for a lawyer or representative to contact you as a result of an accident. In fact, unsolicited personal contact is prohibited by the State Bar. The decision to contact an attorney is yours and yours alone.
This means that you pay no attorney’s fees unless your lawyer either negotiates a settlement with your approval or wins a judgement in court. This method of compensation makes legal representation available to many who otherwise could not afford it. It also means that if your case has merit, you can be well represented by a qualifi ed attorney.
Ask friends or attorneys you know for references of personal injury lawyers, or check with the California Bar Association. It’s the best way to fi nd an ethical, competent attorney with the trial experience it takes to bring your case to a fair conclusion. Beware of the promises and claims some attorneys make in their ads.

Rural Cemeteries Veterans in very rural areas have had little opportunity to arrange for burial in a national or state veterans cemetery. The Department of Veterans Af-fairs operates 131 national cemeteries, but they’re in areas of high population. Current requirements say that there must be 80,000 veterans living within 75 miles for a cemetery to come under the auspices of the National Cemetery System. Now, because of the Rural Initiative, eight ar-eas will have local cemeteries established as National Veterans Burial Grounds. The new requirements are that there are no more than 25,000 veterans within 75 miles and that they have no reasonable access to a national or state veterans cemetery. The eight new locations are Fargo, N.D.; Rhinelander, Wis.; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Laurel, Mont.; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Cedar City, Utah; Calais, Maine; and Elko, Nev. This opens up burial options for 136,000 veterans and their eligible dependents. The new designations means that a portion, three to five acres, of existing local cemeteries will come un-der the care of the National Cemetery System and be brought up to the national shrine standards of the larger cemeteries. Besides making it easier on families to have a local cemetery, there are additional benefits to burial in a National Cemetery, no matter its size: The headstone, marker and burial plot are free. Eligibility requirements for burial in a Nation-al Veterans Cemetery are lengthy and complicated, but at the top of the list are: Discharge under condi-tions other than dishonorable, or a service member who dies while on active duty. The specifics can be found at the VA’s National Cemetery site [www.cem.va.gov]. To ascertain eligibility for burial in a National Cemetery, call the scheduling office at 1-800-535-1117. If you’d like to explore having a National Vet-erans Burial Ground at a cemetery in your area, start by contacting your U.S representative and VA Secre-tary Eric Shinseki’s office.

Which Bills to Pay First? If you don’t have enough money to pay all of your bills, which should you pay first, and which ones can slide for a while? Allowing bills to be-come delinquent is wrong, but available cash can be stretched only so far. You need to know how to prioritize in a way that will cause the least amount of long-term damage and keep you in the best posi-tion to eventually catch up. Rule of thumb: Do not make payments on nonessential debts when you have not paid es-sential ones, even if your nonessential creditors are breathing down your neck. Essential debts: If not paid, these could produce severe consequences. Determine which debts are essential and prioritize them according to the severity of the consequences for non-payment: 1. Family necessities. This means basic food and unavoidable medical expenses, including health insurance. These expenses should be kept to the absolute bare bones. 2. Rent or mortgage. Assume your landlord or mortgage lender will proceed to evict or fore-close if you are late. Home equity and other loans secured by your home are essential debts, too. Real estate taxes and insurance must also be paid. 3. Utilities. Pay the minimum required to keep essential utility services from being disconnected. 4. Car payments. If a car is necessary to keep your job, making the loan or lease payment is the next priority. You must also keep up to date with insurance. 5. Child support. Paying child support is absolutely essential. Not paying can land you in jail. 6. Other secured loans. You know a debt is secured if you signed a security agreement. If the
property is something you cannot live without and the creditor might take it for non-payment, keep that debt current. 7. Unpaid taxes: If the IRS is about to take your paycheck, bank account, house or other prop-erty, you need to set up a repayment plan immedi-ately. 8. Nonessential debts: These are lesser and have a significantly delayed effect if you’re late in paying. Your credit file will be affected, but a blemished credit report is easier to live with than being thrown out of your home or having your car repossessed. 9. Student loans: Delinquent student loans backed by the U.S. government bring collection remedies like seizure of your tax refunds and spe-cial wage garnishment. 10. Credit cards: Your accounts can be closed and, if the debt is unusually high, you may be sued. 11. Loans from friends and relatives: You have a moral obligation to pay. Have an honest talk; explain your situation and your repayment plan. 12. Medical, legal and accounting bills: These debts are rarely essential unless you are receiving necessary treatment from the provider to whom you owe money. Keep up the minimum payments so these services won’t be cut off. Your role: As a good steward, don’t al-low your emotions to dictate how you handle your money. Do not hide, and do not lie. And do not take your situation personally. When things turns around, keep the promises you have made to your creditors, your family and to yourself.

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING The Truth About Aggressive Dogs Remember that classic scene from “A Few Good Men,” the one that featured Jack Nicholson, decked out in full military regalia, on the witness stand, puffing his chest and bellowing, “You can’t handle the truth”? Well, there are times when I can relate. Take the following letter from a reader: “I have two dogs: a lab-pit mix I raised from 8 weeks old who has no problems with other dogs or people, and Augie, a German shepherd I picked up at 4 months of age who I believe was subjected to some abuse before I got him. “Augie weighs 95 pounds and has an aggres-sive personality. I’ve studied and tried all of the ag-gressive dog tests on your website, and he does not seem to fit any of them. He is not object- or food-pos-sessive. The closest would be dominant-aggressive. However, he does not challenge or fear me in any way I can measure using your tests. “He can be aggressive with strangers, but will back off at the command ‘no’ from me or even from them. I can put him on his side in a park full of active strangers, and as long as no one gets too close, he will stay down until I give him the command to get up. “I once dog-sat a friend’s small dog, and Au-gie was very aggressive in his reaction to the other dog the first day. After 24 hours, I was able to let the two dogs meet and interact. By the end of that day, they were fast friends playing like puppies. Augie isn’t mean; he’s just not socialized and may be fear-aggressive with other dogs. “At home, there are no problems. Both of my dogs walk without pulling and heel on leash. We walk through the park for about 40 minutes nearly every day. When walking in the park, both dogs are fine ex-cept when another dog appears. If the strange dog is closer than 50 feet, Augie goes into aggressive bark mode. I’ve tried a couple of the ‘wrong’ methods to resolve this problem and failed due to his complete focus on the other dogs. Based on an Uncle Matty PBS segment, I’ve lately been using a mister bottle with plain water to distract him and get his focus off the other dog. Once I get his focus on me, he almost always listens -- but not if the other dog is also ag-gressive. He understands and obeys the basic com-mands as long as there isn’t something significant

distracting him. “I believe that with better training and the correct muzzle and halter I could eventually work with him in areas where lots of other dogs and people are active and get him successfully socialized. I’d like some advice on methods of training and the optimal tools for control when socializing him.” The world is full of distractions, and this country alone is populated with millions of strang-ers. If Augie’s daily life is going to include walks in the park and exposure to other public places, profes-sional training is a must. Right now, he’s a 95-pound ticking time bomb; not a bad dog, but an aggressive dog. And an inadequately trained aggressive dog is a dangerous dog, unfit for any public arena. The fact that Augie will only listen when there are no external distractions means he requires additional training. A trained dog listens and obeys. Period. A dog that will only listen under certain ideal circumstances determined by him is not a trained dog. Augie’s owner used the word “aggressive” to describe Augie seven times in as many paragraphs. But he wasn’t about to hear it from me. We spoke on the phone, and I hope he takes my advice to hire a professional trainer. His heart is in the right place, but sometimes too much heart is the problem. Right now, he’s in the emotionality business. And I, like Jack, am firmly rooted in the reality business. Woof! lifelonghealth
Dr. David Lipschitz
Reduce Risk of Falling by Maintaining Health After age 65, about 30 percent of people fall at least once annually. If a hip fracture occurs, 25 percent will die in a year and 50 percent will become dependent -- frequently requiring nursing-home care. Fortunately, much can be done to reduce the risk of a fall, the need for lengthy hospital stays or the loss of independence. The risk of falling frequently is due to de-clines in balance, mobility and gait, as well as a high risk of fainting caused by a blood pressure drop when attempting to stand up. Visual difficulties, diz-ziness, inappropriate shoe choices and drug side ef-fects often contribute to falls. Tripping due to environ-mental hazards in the home or elsewhere remains the major cause of falls at any age. For a person at risk of falling, an evaluation by a physician is essential. Medical conditions that contribute to falls must be identified and treated, and problems with gait and balance should be evaluated. Medications that increase the risk of falling should be avoided. Wherever possible, keep medications to a minimum and avoid sleeping pills, tranquilizers and alcohol. Patients must be made aware that medica-tions to treat hypertension can lead to dangerous drops in blood pressure, with changes in posture. Never stand up suddenly and always have some-thing to hold on to. No matter your health, aging is associated with a relentless loss of muscle mass, an increased proportion of weight as fat, and progressive weak-ness that slows gait speed, affects balance and increases the risk of falls. It follows that the more we do to maintain strength the better. Physical therapy can help reduce falls. Treat-ment includes balance exercises and working with weights that build muscle, bones and most impor-tantly, strength. The older the patient, the longer the time taken to see tangible improvements, but they will occur and in the long term, the results are well worth the effort. When physical therapy ends, keep moving and consider joining a health club to maintain and improve strength and balance. If needed, do not be embarrassed to use a cane, walker or wheelchair. But walk as much as possible. The more time spent being immobile or sitting in a wheelchair, the greater the loss of muscle and the increased chance of a fall. Most serious falls occur in the bathroom.
Carefully review the bathroom and make sure slip-pery surfaces can be avoided, that water does not leak from the shower or tub, and if possible, install handrails from the bed all the way into the bathroom. Often a raised toilet seat with armrests can prove helpful. A sturdy plastic seat should be placed in the tub or shower and use a hand-held shower to bathe. If a wheelchair is needed or gait and balance is significantly impaired, a uniquely designed bathtub or shower may be necessary. Fall-proof the home by clearing walking areas of boxes and electrical and phone cords. Remove low coffee tables and move magazine and plant stands out of the way. Loose rugs should be removed or taped to the floor; uneven wooden floorboards or carpeting must be repaired; and skidproof materials should be used for cleaning. Many falls are caused by standing on a chair or attempting to remove some-thing from an out-of-reach cupboard. For this reason, clothing, cleaning materials, dishes, utensils and food must be accessible and stored within easy reach. Adequate lighting decreases the risk of a fall. Assure that each room has ambient light from outside during the day, is well lighted at night and use night-lights liberally. Always switch on a light before climb-ing the stairs and install glow-in-the-dark or illuminat-ing light switches. If the risk of a fall is too great, consider whether living alone in a large house with stairs is ap-propriate. It may be time to move to a one-level home or assisted-living facility, where help is available and people surround you. And as you grow older, no mat-ter your health, live as close as possible to immediate family. Accidents due to falls are a major cause of physical disability, the need for nursing-home care and poor quality of life. The earlier precautions are taken to reduce the risk of a fall, the better.

CLIP AND SAVE
Hospital Stay Gives Columnist Time to Reflect There is nothing like a brush with death to make one realize what’s important in life. And of course, what’s important are things like family and friends and good health. What’s not really all that im-portant are things like “delayed retirement credits” and “file and suspend” rules and all the other Social Security benefit gaming tactics that have taken up so much of this column space, and my email inbox capacity, in the past couple of months. About a week and a half ago, I found myself in a hospital emergency room. I was having difficulty breathing. In a relatively short span of time, I had gone from getting more winded than usual following a game of tennis to getting out of breath doing sim-ple household chores like cutting the lawn to hav-ing trouble just walking across a room in our house. That’s when we headed for the hospital. (Of course, I should have had this checked sooner. But I’m one of those big stubborn guys who thought I could simply shake this off!) Anyway, doctors discovered two pretty sig-nificant blood clots in my lungs that they surmised grew out of several long plane flights my wife and I took in June. I spent a week in the hospital where for a time I thought I’d never be able to get out of bed again. For a guy whose most significant medi-cal issues up until then had been several bouts of flu -- a guy who had never been in a hospital in his life (other than for the birth of his children and grand-children) -- I was suddenly facing the grim reality of my mortality. But I don’t want to get too over-dramatic here, because long story short: I am back home now and getting around just fine, although I’m tethered to an oxygen hose and popping blood-thinning drugs like candy. The oxygen should come off in about a week. However, I’ll be taking those anti-coagulants for some time to come. What led to writing this column and shar-ing my medical woes is this: When I got home, I had about 500 email messages waiting for me. And easily, three-fourths of them were from readers who were fretting over decisions about when to start their So-cial Security benefits. A typical question went like this: “If I file for benefits at 66, immediately suspend those benefits and then decide to restart them at 68, will I get my age 66 benefit rate or a delayed retire-ment rate?” Another common question: “Can I file for my own Social Security at 66, suspend those ben-efits, and then claim a wife’s benefit on my husband’s account until age 70 -- and then can I switch back to my own and get delayed retirement credits?” And almost all the questions exhibited some form of anxi-ety with readers pleading for me to tell them what to do! As I’ve written before, this “gaming” of the Social Security system is a relatively new develop-ment. In the past, throughout almost my entire 32-year career with the Social Security Administration, most people simply claimed their benefits at age 62. They took an early retirement reduction for starting benefits before their “full retirement age.” But lots of retirees decided they’d rather get benefits for a longer period of time at a reduced rate as opposed to waiting until 65 or 66 to claim full benefits. A not insignificant portion of retirees waited
until age 65 or 66 to claim full benefits. And a fairly small percentage of folks opted to wait until 70 to get full benefits plus a delayed retirement bonus of 32 percent. But something has happened in the last five years or so, and all of that has turned around. Retir-ing baby boomers are either more financially savvy than their older colleagues, or at least they think they are more financially savvy, because millions of them are now gambling with their Social Security benefits. They are routinely delaying benefits as long as possi-ble on the assumption that they will live long enough to beat the odds and win the Social Security game. They are giving up tens of thousands, sometimes more than a hundred thousand dollars in benefits between age 62 and 70 hoping that they will live into their mid 80s -- usually the point at which they come out ahead by delaying starting full benefits until age 70. I just want some of these folks to think about me. Prior to my recent blood clot calamity, I had nev-er been sick a day in my life. I would have bet I was a sure candidate to live into my mid 80s, if not my 90s. Now I’m not so sure. Regular readers of this column know that I am a proponent of taking your Social Security ben-efits early. I know that almost every financial planner in this country would disagree with me. But I’ve al-ways been an “eat, drink, and be merry ... for tomor-row we might die” kind of guy. Now I know that’s literally true! I took my Social Security benefits at age 62. So did my wife. It might have been a knuckle-headed decision. It might have been the smartest move we ever made. Who knows? But here is my main point: we made that decision, and we’re happy with it. We’re not worrying about it one little whit! That’s why I wanted to write back to all these folks fretting over their Social Security benefits to tell them to relax. When it comes to their Social Se-curity options, most of them are not between a rock and a hard place. They are between a cushion and a soft place. No matter which decision they make (take their Social Security at 62 or 66 or 70), they are on target to live quite comfortably in retirement. Maybe it takes someone who was recently “knocking on heaven’s door” to realize that whether or not you end up with a few extra nickels in the long run by delaying benefits until age 70 isn’t really all that important in the bigger scheme of things!
Having made that pitch, I know that thou-sands of you at least want to be familiar with your options with respect to when to take your benefits. That’s why once again I’m offering a free digital copy of my fact sheet, “When to take your Social Security benefits.” To get one, send an email to [email protected]. And maybe add a “get well” wish! Sometimes Heartburn Can Lead to Cancer DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For many years, I had heartburn, and I lived with it by taking things like Tums. Finally, I consulted a doctor, who referred me to a gastroenterologist be-cause he was alarmed at the length of time I’d had it. The gastroenterologist gave me a scope exam of my esophagus and stomach. It turns out I have GERD and something called Bar-rett’s esophagus, which turns into cancer. Nat-urally, I am nervous. I’ve never heard of heart-burn-causing cancer. Is this a common thing? How often does this happen? -- A.S.
ANSWER: Not often, but enough that plans have to be made to keep checking for such a change.Heartburn is officially called GERD, gastroesopha-geal reflux disease. Stomach acid squirts upward (refluxes) into the swallowing tube, the esophagus. The esophagus isn’t built to deal with stomach acid the way the stomach is. The result is heartburn. Medicines for GERD are many. The ones most often chosen are proton-pump inhibitors, medicines that all but turn off acid production. Their names are Prevacid (lansoprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole) and Aci-phex (rabeprazole). Up to 12 percent of GERD patients, even with treatment, develop Barrett’s esophagus. The lining cells of the lower part of the esophagus change into ones that are more resistant to stomach acid. That change can evolve into another transformation that is precancerous. That’s called dysplasia. Dysplasia can then become cancer. The absolute risk for this is small, but it is real, and has to be carefully looked for. If the Barrett’s cells show signs of low-grade dysplasia, then a follow-up scope exam of the esopha-gus is done in six to 12 months and repeated annu-ally. If high-grade changes are found, the scope exam is repeated every six months. If no dysplasia changes are seen, follow-up exams are scheduled for every three years. The booklet on hiatal hernia and GERD gives a comprehensive treatment on this subject. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a senior citizen. For the past five years I have received
Botox injections and wonder where the Botox goes after it leaves the injection site after about six or seven months. Does it stay in the body forever? Does it go to an organ? Suddenly, I am worried about this. -- S.B.
ANSWER: The body, as it does with all in-jected medicines, breaks down Botox, and the break-down products are eliminated. It’s the way nature takes care of all foreign materials that find their way into our bodies. ***
Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.(c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc.

Vitamin Supplements and Bone Fractures The New England Journal of Medicine recently reported findings of a study on the rela-tionship between vitamin D supplements and bone fractures. Researchers at Oregon State University analyzed 11 different studies done with and without calcium, which often is given at the same time as vitamin D. All participants were age 65 or older. The study concluded that there is a cor-relation between low levels of vitamin D and early death in older adults. Specifically, researchers looked at vitamin D levels in “frail seniors,” a group defined by having three of the following five characteristics: Exhaustion; Slow walking; Muscle weak-ness; Low levels of physical activity; and Uninten-tional weight loss. “Pre-frail” seniors have two of the above characteristics. The most frail of the seniors had the lowest amount of vitamin D in their blood. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found “strong evidence” that seniors need both vitamin D and regular exercise to prevent fractures from falls. Pretty compelling evidence, I would say. So, how do we get vitamin D? Ideally we get it from our diet (though there’s not much in our food) and through sunshine. But many of us live in areas where it’s too cold to continue walking outside when winter comes. That’s where vitamin D sup-plements come in. Ask your doctor if you need a test to de-termine your vitamin D levels. Ask, too, whether you are in a high-risk group and perhaps need to have your balance, gait and vision assessed. Get-ting more vitamin D could be as simple as adding certain types of fish to your diet and taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Don’t try this on your own because your personal dose will vary. Ask your doctor first.
Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot person-ally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Who Wins Estate Wars Q: My parents both died in an auto accident nearly a year ago. They had an estate worth more than a million dollars. My brother and I are the only heirs. My brother was desig-nated as their executor. I am to receive 60 per-cent of their estate and my brother 40 percent. My brother, who is far better off financially than I am, is OK with this, but my sister-in-law is jealous because I am getting more. I believe she is deliberately delaying settlement of the estate in the hope I will agree to share equally. The assets are invested in stocks, bonds and in the home. My husband and I would like to buy a new home now, as prices are down. Can we pressure my brother to settle the estate as soon as possible?
A: There are numerous legal papers re-quired before estate assets can be distributed. For example, the IRS and state agencies want their cut; the cost-and-sale basis of their home needs to be de-termined; a real estate commission and attorneys fees need to be paid; and there are processing and other costs that you probably never anticipated that also need to be paid. You will learn how fast a million dollars can dwindle. Also, remember ongoing fees, such as the maintenance of their home, federal and state tax obligations, and stockbroker’s expenses continue. Releases from every potential debtor must be executed. It is not unusual to take a minimum of a year to settle an estate. I am aware of a similar estate that took over two years before checks were released. Determining a settlement date is all but impossible. Think options. Is it possible for a real estate broker to find a homeowner who would sell their home on a lease/option purchase agreement to you, based on the current valuation? Is there a family member who would make you a two or three year loan to expedite your purchase? Unfortunately, in many cases, World War III is declared when the second parent dies. Also, more often than you might believe, the adult child who gets to their parents’ home with a truck first wins the war. * * *
Q: We are in our middle 60s and on the path of trying to keep ourselves fit, healthy and as young as possible. We take vitamins, ex-ercise regularly, try to keep our diet sensible with the right foods, and we keep our attitudes
positive and under control. What tips can you give us about what more can we do?
A: I believe comedian George Carlin had some good answers on this one: “Throw out non-essential numbers, which includes age, weight and height. Keep learning and enjoy the simple things. Laugh often long and loud. Cherish your health. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every op-portunity.” Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away!

■ On Aug. 28, 1774, Elizabeth Ann Bay-ley is born in New York City. She went on to found the first Catholic school and the first female apostolic community in the United States. She also was the first American-born saint beatified by the Roman Catholic Church.
■ On Sept. 1, 1850, circus entrepreneur P.T. Barnum brings to the United States Jen-ny Lind, the greatest opera performer in the world in the mid-19th century. Lind -- “The Swedish Nightingale” -- was a sensation. Her tour is believed to have netted Barnum close to a half-million dollars, an astonishing sum in 1850.
■ On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau (also called Krakatoa), a small island located in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air and cre-ated 120-foot tsunamis.
■ On Aug. 29, 1942, the Red Cross re-veals that Japan has refused free passage of ships carrying food, medicine and other ne-cessities for American POWs held by Japan. Japan allowed just one-tenth of what POWs elsewhere received to reach prisoners in their territories.
■ On Aug. 31, 1959, Brooklyn Dodgers left-hander Sandy Koufax strikes out 18 bat-ters, setting a new National League record for most strikeouts in a single game. Koufax retired after the 1966 season at just 30 years old because of arthritis in his elbow. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972.
■ On Aug. 30, 1967, Thurgood Marshall becomes the first black American to be con-firmed as a Supreme Court justice. He would remain on the Supreme Court for 24 years before retiring for health reasons, leaving a legacy of upholding the rights of the individ-ual.
■ On Sept. 2, 1987, the trial of Mathias Rust, the 19-year-old German pilot who flew his Cessna plane into Red Square in May 1987, begins in Moscow. Rust had become an international celebrity after he flew com-pletely undetected through Soviet airspace. At his trial, Rust claimed he was merely try-ing to promote world peace.

Piano Babies in Tune With the Times Q: Enclosed is a photo of a porcelain doll. My mother-in-law said shawls or scarves were put on pianos and piano dolls were used to keep them from falling. The doll is eight inches tall and in excellent condition. You can see the exceptional detail on the fingers, nails, toes and dimples. We cannot make out the mark that is on the lower back of the doll. It looks like a circle with lines radiating like sunrays, though only from the top half, and it also has letters on the lower half that we’re unable to read. Can you help Identify this doll?
A: You have a bisque piano baby and your mother-in-law is correct. In the late 1800s, most families had a piano they would gather around for entertainment. The pianos, especially baby grands, were covered with decorative shawls or scarves. The babies were designed to anchor the shawls so they wouldn’t slide off. The babies were produced in a variety of sizes and in positions that ranged from sitting, crawling, lying down and sleeping. Typical-ly, they have rosy cheeks, winsome smiles and are molded with exact attention to detail. The mark you described was used by Heubach brothers, who have been located in Thuringia, Germany, since 1882. They produced vases, plaques, figurines, dolls and dolls’ heads. Your piano baby was made in the late 1800s. Similar babies can be found selling in antiques shops in the range of $275 to $325.
Q: My mother left me eight plates that were rarely used. I have sent my drawing of the mark that is on the back of each one. The plates are 11 inches in diameter and decorated with multi-colored flowers in the center. The back-ground is white, they have gold borders and are in mint condition. I don’t know where my mother got the plates. They may have been a gift from her British employer. Can you tell me anything about them and whether they have any value?
A: Scammell China Co. was founded in 1924 in New Jersey. They made hotel and railroad china. In 1939, they added Lamberton China, a line of fine china designed for homes. The decorations were both hand painted and transfer printed. The company was sold to Sterling China Co. in 1954. Your dinner plates were made around 1950,
and each would probably be worth $10 to $20.

Olympics Are No Joke Last week, I wrote that the Olympic Games were a joke. I retract that statement. They’re seri-ous business in several ways. Plenty of people -- agents, Olympic com-mittees and, in some cases, even the players -- make money during the games either directly (the U.S.A. basketball team), indirectly (medal-winner endorsements) or through pot brownie bake sales for the American judo team. The games also lead to various infrastruc-ture improvements and leave lasting legacy sites, such as the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. It is that place in particular that will leave a last-ing impression in mind, for I was in the Centennial Olympic Park the night the park was bombed. The games for me, ironically, started with me being in the right place at the right time. I had recently moved to Atlanta and secured a job at the tech company tasked with providing the technology at the Olympics. A colleague scored a gig at the games, and I rode in on his coattails, hosting the “Surf Shack” inside the Olympic Village. Next to the Surf Shack were a laser-tag tent and the Village arcade. Every day I’d sneak out of the shack and do battle with the world’s greatest athletes inside both venues. The usual warlike countries excelled in laser-tag battles, but at the air-hockey table? That was reserved for a country all to its own: New Jersey. For it was there that I reigned supreme, to the supreme annoyance of the world’s best athletes. My relentless, bank shot-laden assault backed with boardwalk-honed smack talk proved to be unbeatable ... that was, until I played the Australian swim team. My seashore smack was tolerated by, say, the Ukrainians or Moldavians, who hadn’t a clue what I was saying, but the Aussies, they spoke the language. Also, they were huge and they were there to win real Olympic gold medals. So, rather than crush me like a bug, they complained, and the Atlanta Committee of the Olympic Games decided to ban all non-athletes from the arcade. After arguing with American swimmer Jenny Thompson about Surf Shack rules (she didn’t like that we didn’t adhere to Stanford’s rules of emailers first), I took my lanyard to the Centen-nial Park that evening and met with an old girlfriend at the beer tent. We watched a country-fried band playing on the main stage, but decided we didn’t want to stay for “Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.” The night lasted until the early morning in an era just on the cusp of rampant cellphone usage, so I didn’t know that the park was bombed and that we had been sitting squarely within range of the blast. Suddenly, air hockey didn’t seem so impor-tant anymore, and as the athletes and citizens at the games came together in ways hard to describe if you weren’t there, I realized the games were no joke -- at all.

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing
Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.
As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.
For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.
Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.
And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations
during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.
But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.
Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.
While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”
Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

Adapting to the Ball Above Your Feet
Have you ever gone to the driving range and hit the ball greatonly to see it disappear when you play the course? If that is the case, the reason could be that when you are on thedriving range the ball is on a flat lie that is level to your feet. When you play on the golf course the ball is lying at anglesthat could position the ball above or below your feet. The first thing you want to do when you are getting ready tohit your shot is to assess the lie. Is the ball above or belowmy feet? You can see in the picture that I drew a line alongthe ground that represents “foot level”. The ball isapproximately a couple inches above that line. With the ballbeing above my feet I need to make two adjustments to mysetup; 1) I need to grip down an inch off the top of the club, therefore shortening the shaft. 2) I need to be taller in the legs and in my spine angle.I will also need to make slight adjustments to the swing; Be sure to have the right foot push the hip up through the ball inthe forward swing which will help from hitting the shot fat. Also, finish the swing with the hips and shoulders level to thehorizon. This swing feels very similar to a baseball swing, more level to the horizon line rather than “down” to the ball. The best way to check and see if these adjustments aregoing to help is to make a practice swing and see where andhow deep the divot is in reference to the ball. Your goal is to have a clean brush of the grass through the area of the ball.Keep making the adjustments to the setup and swing untilyou get the right combination for that perfect brush of thegrass. Now you’re ready to have the ball respond to thatswing. The biggest challenge in golf is that the ball lie’s at variousdegrees on sloped ground. That challenge requires that youdevelop the ability to adapt to those angles to produce thebest shot possible.

Adapting to the ball aboveyour feet Have you ever found yourself hitting the ball great at the driving range, only to see all that dis-appear on the course? It could be that the ball at the range is always level to your feet, but on the hilly course your setup is always changing. To overcome these terrain changes, you first need to assess your lie. Is the ball above or below your feet? In the photo I’ve drawn a line to represent my “foot level”. In this case the ball is several inches above that line, which means I need to make two ad-justments to my setup: 1) I need to grip down an inch off the top of the club to shorten the shaft. 2) I need to be taller in the legs with less angle in my back. My swing will also need some adjusting. My right foot needs to push my hip up through the ball to avoid hitting it fat, and I’ll finish with my hips and shoulders level to the horizon. This swing is somewhat similar to a baseball swing, more horizontal than “down” to the ball. Your goal is to adjust your setup according to your lie and have the clubhead make a clean bush of the grass through the ball. Once you’ve learned to adapt to the slopes this way, youll be producing the best shots possible.
