Spring Has Sprung! THE FLOWERS ARE COMING!
THE FLOWERS ARE COMING!
TIDBITS DECLARES...
by Patricia L. Cook
Now that the end of April is here and we look forward to May, flowers are popping up everywhere. If you happen to live in a climate where it’s cloudy and drizzly this time of year, remember, “April showers bring May flowers.”• The man who has been credited with coining that
phrase actually said it a little differently. Thomas Tusser was a poet and agricultural writer in the 16th century. He published “One Hundred Good Points of Husbandry” in England in 1557. Later, in 1573, he expanded the work to “Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry.”
• Tusser’s writing style was in old English when he wrote, “Sweet April showers, do spring May flowers.” His books were collections of instructions on housekeeping, gardening and farming. His poems contained humor as well as wisdom.
• Despite his wise insights and the extent of his writing, Tusser’s fame did not come until after his death in London in 1580. His words have lived on for centuries.
• Other familiar quotes attributed to Tusser include: “A fool and his money are soon parted,” “God sendeth and giveth both mouth and meat.” and “Always look at the sunny side of life.” Many

Originally begun as the site for a cement manu- facturing plant in 1888, the 55-acre (22.3 ha) Butchart Gardens is located on Canada’s west coast near Victoria on Vancouver Island. Once an exhausted and abandoned limestone quarry, the site is now a National Historic Treasure of spectacular floral display gardens, walking paths, ponds and waterfalls enjoyed by a million visitors annually.• Robert Pim Butchart was a dry goods merchant
before he began manufacturing Portland cement in 1888, near his birthplace of Owen Sound, Ontario. He became very successful in the growing North American concrete industry.
• Butchart learned of rich limestone deposits, which were vital for cement production, on the west coast of Canada. After exploring the area for its potential, he built a factory on Vancouver Island at a location known as Tod Inlet. In 1904, he and his family established their home there.
• It didn’t take many years for the limestone deposits at Tod Inlet to become depleted. Operations were brought to a halt and the site was abandoned. But Butchart’s wife, Jennie, was ahead of her time in the art of reclaiming depleted land. She set about to refurbish the pit from which limestone had been quarried.
• She obtained tons of top soil from nearby farmland that was brought to Tod Inlet by horse and cart and used to fill in the floor of the abandoned quarry. Under Jennie’s direction, the quarry became the spectacular Sunken Garden that visitors enjoy today.
• Although cement manufacturing stopped at the plant in 1916, tiles and flower pots were made there through 1950. The only part of the abandoned cement operation visible today is the tall chimney viewed from the Sunken Garden Lookout.
• By 1908, the world-traveling Butcharts had added a Japanese Garden on the sea side of their home. Shortly thereafter, an Italian Garden was established where the family had previously played tennis on their private court. By 1929, a beautiful Rose Garden had replaced a large kitchen vegetable garden.
• The gardens are planted annually with over a million bedding plants in approximately

quotes from his writing have been changed to more modern language styles.
• While flowers bloom at different times in many locations, Tusser’s rhyme points to the time of year when most flower gardens are beginning to show their colors.
• Of the many famous gardens around the world, there are some, such as in Holland, that are devoted to specific flowers while others offer a broad variety in size, shape and color.
• The tulip fields that bloom near Amsterdam are among the most famous in the world. The Keukenhof Gardens southwest of Amsterdam in the small village of Lisse are only open from March to May. Keukenhof translates “kitchen garden,” and the historic park is known as the “Garden of Europe.” Every spring more than seven million flowers bloom with tulips the most abundant, but also present are blooms of daffodils, orchids, hyacinths, roses, carnations, irises, lilies and more.
• Nearly 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers have been blooming on the rolling hills of North San Diego County in Southern California for over 60 years. Known as the Flower Fields® at Carlsbad Ranch, the flowers only bloom for six to eight weeks each year, from early March through early May. It is one of the most beautiful and spectacular coordinated displays of natural floral beauty in the world. The flowers announce the arrival of spring to Southern California.
• Giant Tecolote Ranunculus were brought to Southern California by Luther Gage, an English

horticulturist, more than 60 years ago when his family left England to establish a home in California. Enamored with the flowers in England, Gage brought their seeds with him. These seeds became the first ranunculus known to be planted in North America.
• If you love the beauty of azaleas, Callaway Gardens in Georgia is the place to visit. Located at the southern end of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Callaway Gardens’ 13,000 acres include the world’s largest azalea display.
• Callaway Gardens opened to the public in 1952. There are two areas that are bursting with azaleas. The original “Overlook Azalea Garden,” planted under the guidance of the founders, Cason and Virginia Callaway, has more than 700 varieties of cultivated azaleas that were planted many years ago. The “Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl” was opened in 1999 on 40 acres. It has more than 3,400 hybrid azaleas in pinks, reds, whites and more. Both areas also boast trees, shrubs and other flowering plants to complement the azaleas.
• Azaleas are scattered all over the Southern states, and there are many azalea festivals to highlight the showy plants. While many of those festivals occur in March and April to welcome spring and the masses of colorful blooms, there are many yards and gardens with azaleas blooming well into June.
• Peak blooming time in the Gulf Coast states, including Texas, is from February to May or June, and in the Carolinas and Virginia, it is from April to June.
• Even though azaleas are mostly found in the Southern states, Brookings, Oregon, a small town just six miles north of the California border on U.S. Highway 101, has a history that includes azaleas and an Azalea Festival dating back to 1939. To live up to its tagline, “Where flowers meet the sea,” five varieties of native azaleas are cared for in Azalea Park, considered the “crown jewel” of Brookings City Parks.
• Another flower that blooms brightly and keeps Brookings “on the map” with flower lovers is the Easter lily. The flower is native to Japan, but Louis Houghton, a World War I soldier, is credited with bringing bulbs of this flower to the
United States. By 1945, there were about 1,200 growers on the Pacific coast from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Long Beach, California. Today almost all of the bulbs for the potted Easter lily market are grown by 10 farms in a
Where did the War of the Roses get its name? The war, fought in Britain, was between two royal families: the Lancastrians, who had a red rose as their symbol, and the Yorkists, whose symbol was a white rose.
1. Which early blooming spring flower is also known as Easter Bell?
2. What is the state flower of Louisiana that is also the state flower and tree of Mississippi.
A very uniquegarden that “hangs” around all year is the “world’s largest hang-ing flower basket” at the Hotel Indigo in London’s Paddington neighborhood. The massive basket was first revealed at the opening of the hotel in Janary 2009. The flower- laden container weighs more than a quarter of a ton.

700 varieties. Planting varieties are carefully selected, timed and maintained so that full blooms are present continuously from March through October.
• In the early days, weekly symphony concerts were hosted by Mr and Mrs. Butchart. These were often held for guests of the family, but later attracted a larger audience. More recently, in the Summer Season (July and August) and during the Winter Holiday Season they provide a wide range of local entertainment, from Jazz to classical music.
• In 1953, miles of underground wiring was laid to provide night illumination, to mark the 50th anniversary of The Gardens. In 1964, the ever-changing Ross Fountain was installed in the lower reservoir to celebrate the 60th anniversary. In 1994, the Canadian Heraldic Authority granted a coat of arms to the Butchart Gardens. In 2004, two 30-foot totem poles were installed to mark the 100th anniversary, and on that occasion the Gardens were officially designated as a National Historic Site.
• The gardens welcome visitors year round for five seasons: the usual four -- winter, spring, summer and autumn -- as well as a special season just for Christmas. Visitors are blessed not only with spectacular floral beauty but entertainment and lighting displays. On Satuday evenings during the summer months visitors will enjoy fireworks displays accompanied by live music playing classical selections and show tunes. During the Winter, lights and seasonal decorations adorn the gardens and walkways along with an ice-skating rink in the Waterwheel Square.
• The original Butcharts named the estate “Benvenuto,” which is Italian for “welcome.” They developed a truly unique and welcoming spot for visitors to enjoy. The family residence is open for tours during the winter months from January 15- March 15.
• The Butchart family descendants still own the private estate and gardens. In 1939, the Butcharts gave the Gardens to their grandson Ian Ross (1918–1997) on his 21st birthday.
Butchart Gardens at night
Ross was involved in the operation and promotion of the gardens until his death 58 years later. The present owner and managing director since 2001 is the Butcharts’ great-granddaughter, Robin-Lee Clarke.
• With the extensive world traveling the Butchart family did, they returned with many unique sculptures that they included as part of the gardens’ appointments. One of the most interesting is a rare bronze copy of a wild boar statue sculptured from marble and displayed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The copy is known as “Tacca,” in honor of Pietro Tacca, who created the statue in 1620. Many visitors rub Tacca’s snout affectionately for good luck.
• The Butchart family never had intentions to make the site into botanical gardens, focusing instead on making the grounds one of simple natural beauty. Even though there are many plant species present, none are labeled and no botanical collections were created. ■
● It was British doctor and author Alec Bourne who made the following sage ob-servation: “It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely un-educated.”
● In 2007, a world record was set off the coast of Brazil when a single wave was caught by 84 surfers.
● Have you ever heard of a book called “Never Again” by Doug Nufer? Probably not -- it’s not on any bestseller lists and hasn’t been reviewed by any notable critics. It’s quite possibly unique in literary history, how-ever; in its entire 192 pages, not a single word -- even basic words such as a, an, the, of and for -- is used twice.
● If you were to stack up a million $1 bills, they would weigh about one ton.
● The Twist dance craze in the 1960s changed the culture in America and spread around the world. Most people don’t real-ize, though, that the song “The Twist,” which started the fad, wasn’t originally sung by Chubby Checker, though he was the one who sent the single up the charts and has since been irrevocably associated with the dance. The song was originally written and performed by an R&B singer named Hank Ballard. A deejay in Baltimore saw teenag-ers dancing to Ballard’s song and called Dick Clark, host of “American Bandstand.” Clark loved it and invited Ballard to perform the song on the show, but it didn’t work out. Instead, Clark found someone else to per-form the song: Ernest Evans, who changed his name to Chubby Checker. It made his career.
● Colonel Sanders started selling his fried chicken dinners when he was 65 years old, and his only goal was to make $1,000 a month. *** Thought for the Day: “It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is, I can’t remember if it’s the thirteenth or the four-teenth.” -- George Burns

May Day is a special day celebrated in many places around the world in different ways and for different reasons. The United States and Canada do not consider it as important as some other countries, but nevertheless it’s a significant observance and always fun for children. • May Day is usually observed on May 1,
although some countries have it as the first Monday in May. It is a celebration of spring when flowers start blooming and brightening the outdoors. Many believe that the day started in Roman times as a festival to welcome spring. Other cultures observe it as a celebration of newness and fertility, with the May pole itself a type of phallic symbol.
• May Day has been linked to the Feast of Beltane held by the Celtic religion, which was a pagan festival welcoming summer, dating back to before the birth of Jesus Christ. Activities included dancing around a fire, burning effigies of witches, and herding cattle between bonfires. The Celtic religion existed mainly in Britain but also other places in Europe. The Celts were very superstitious, and the religion claimed more than 400 gods and goddesses.
• When the Roman Empire occupied of most of the British Isles, including the United Kingdom, in medieval times, the Feast of Beltane was mostly cast aside. The Romans celebrated the goddess Flora, the goddess of flowers, with a festival called Floralia. Subsequently, the festivals of Beltane and Floralia were combined
in many areas that held celebrations. • May Day is still celebrated in Britain today,
and many workers get the day off. The day is celebrated in other countries in a variety of ways.
• May Day includes a flower festival in France. Delicate flowers known as “lilies of the valley,” are a major part of celebrations. People believe they bring good luck. Lilies of the valley are also used in Denmark, where sweethearts are gifted with flowers on May Day.
• A tulip festival is celebrated to commemorate May Day in Holland, the home country of millions of tulips.
• In many countries, May Day is associated with the labor movement and known for the start of the eight-hour work day. This came about after labor unions in the United States protested 10-hour work days in 1886.
• In Greece, schools are closed for May Day, which is also International Workers Day in that country. People head from cities to the countryside to gather wildflowers, which they use to make wreaths for their front doors. They later burn them in neighborhood bonfires.
• May Day is actually “Lei Day” in Hawaii. It is a colorful day that honors the culture and traditions of Hawaiian natives.
• The most common modern-day tradition for May Day is to secretly leave a basket of flowers or other gifts on a neighbor or friend’s doorknob or porch. This usually involves ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door and then hiding. If the friend sees you before you escape, you owe him or her a kiss.
• Another May Day custom is to erect a tall pole at playgrounds, schoolyards and parks. The “Maypole” is decorated with streamers and children dance and sing around it. Maypoles were usually erected for the day in small towns, but cities such as London had Maypoles that stayed up all year. This custom originated with the Germans. The Puritans believed Maypole dancing was equated with heathen behavior, like idol worship, so they didn’t allow the practice when in power in Britain in the 1600s.
• The Maypole song is: “Dance around the Maypole, In and out, in and out, Weave the ribbons tight, ‘Round the Maypole we will dance, To the left and to the right.” Consider observing May Day with your family and welcome this warm, sunny month!
• You’ve probably heard the distress call,
“Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!” shouted des- perately in various combat action movies, but why do they say that and what does it really mean? Actually, it has nothing at all to do with the springtime celebration, but everything to do with dire distress and an urgent call for help. “Mayday” is an anglicized version of the French “m’aidez” (help me) or “m’aider” (to render aid to me). The word in its modified form was adopted as the official radiotelephone distress call in 1927 by the International Radiotelegraph Convention of Washington, D.C. ■

Summer Sports Clinic If you’re a veteran with severe physical or psychological impairments, consider whether you’d enjoy participating in an adaptive sports clinic. The next National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic will be held in September 2012 in San Diego. Clinic categories are surfing, sailing, cycling (hand and tandem), kayaking and track and field in venues all over the San Diego area.Check the website [www.va.gov, then click Media Room] to be sure you qualify, but if you have spinal cord injuries, burns, injuries sustained in the past six years, psychological trauma, amputations or trau-matic brain injuries, you’re likely the veteran they’re hoping will sign up. Registration forms are available for down-load online. The deadline is June 1, so don’t delay. (You’ll pay a late fee after that.) The application pack has multiple parts, and you’ll need to fill out all of them: a registration check-list, application, medical/physical exam form, media and news release questionnaire, and application for health benefits (if you’re not registered with the VA).Once you have all your paperwork completed, send it all to: Tristan Heaton (00SSC)SV National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic VA San Diego HCS 3350 La Jolla Village Dr. San Diego, CA 92161
If you have questions or don’t have a com-puter and need the forms sent to you, call the local organizing committee chair at 858-642-6426. If you don’t think you can afford the trip, talk to the Vet-erans Service Organization at the VA center where you receive care. The vision statement for the event says that these sports clinics and enjoying those sports later can improve independence, increase self-worth and quality of life, lower stress, reduce dependency on medications and serve as an addition to rehab you might be getting. Sounds like that could open some doors, doesn’t it?

Q: My friends and I watched the Wlad-imir Klitschko heavyweight-title bout against Jena-Marc Mormeck at our local bar, and were happy to see Wladimir retain his heavyweight title. One of my friends said he heard that Wladimir intends to start up an acting career when he’s done with boxing. Is that true? -- John R., Indianapolis
A: While it’s true that the handsome Ukrai-nian has dipped his foot in the Hollywood pool -- the documentary “Klitschko,” which centers on his and his older brother Vitali’s rise in the boxing world, has been making quite an impression on festival go-ers since premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival last year -- Wladimir is keeping his eye firmly on his box-ing career. I spoke with him recently about the acting rumors, and he told me: “While I am asked often about being in movies -- usually it’s a Russian mob character -- it’s always the same thing. I did play my-self in ‘Ocean’s Eleven,’ and I did two German com-
edies. But right now I’m playing the role called the Heavyweight Champion of the World, and it takes all of my time. I really like to play it, and I have to stay focused. So there’s no nonsense with any wannabe Hollywood stuff. If I lose my focus, then I’m going to lose the titles, and I don’t want to do that.” You can watch Wladimir defend his title July 7 against Tony Thompson, and read my entire en-gaging interview with the charming heavyweight at www.celebrityextraonline.com. ***
Q: I am so excited to see “The Aveng-ers,” starring all of my favorite comic-book he-roes, especially Captain America. Because of “The Avengers,” does that mean there won’t be a “Captain America: The First Avenger” sequel for a while? -- Fred D., via e-mail
A: Walt Disney Studios recently announced that Chris Evans will again suit up in red, white and blue to save the world from the bad guys. You can expect the sequel to last summer’s blockbuster hit to arrive in theaters April 4, 2014. While it’s still too early to camp out for tickets, at least there’s a release date in sight. ***
Q: I’m really sad about this being the final season of “Desperate Housewives.” How are the ladies of Wisteria Lane taking it? -- J.J.
A: If one of Marcia Cross’ latest tweets is any indication, they are as sad as you are. Marcia recently lamented via Twitter: “How do you handle goodbyes? Me, not so well ... already feel so sad and vulnerable ... [I] will miss my ‘Desperate House-wives’ family terribly.” *** Readers - Here’s an update on release dates of various HBO projects that have been men-tioned in past columns: First, season five “True Blood” premieres on June 10 at 9 p.m. with 12 all-new episodes. Also, “Newsroom” -- the Aaron Sorkin drama starring Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer and Sam Waterson -- pre-
Wladimir Klitschko
mieres its 10-episode first season on June 24 at 10 p.m.

Are store ATMs safe? Dear Mary: After years of arguing about it, my tech-savvy daughter finally convinced me to get an ATM card. The other day, we were at a local delicatessen, and she wanted me to use the machine there. I’m wary of store ATMs. Are they as safe as the ones at banks? -- Vivian, New York
Dear Vivian: According to the FDIC, it’s more of a risk. They say that if you choose to use a privately owned machine, you should use it at a trusted merchant and make sure that the ATM’s owner is clearly identified. * * * Dear Mary: My husband and I are getting set to buy our first home, and we’ve been shop-ping around for the best mortgage rate. Our re-altor is pushing us to use a broker he knows to
be reliable and fast, but my brother-in-law says we’ll actually save money if we go through our local bank. Naturally, the realtor says it won’t make a difference, but I’m wondering if he’s get-ting a finder’s fee and will say anything to get us to go with his friend. The realtor seems to be a trustworthy guy, but we’re concerned about being steered in the wrong direction. What should we do? -- Lauren, Texas
Dear Lauren: It’s possible you won’t be able to beat your bank’s terms, but it can’t hurt to compare. A good mortgage broker is familiar with current rates, stays current on first-time buyer programs offered by your state and the Federal Housing Administration, as well as lending institu-tions like your bank. Face it. You’re a novice when it comes to buying and financing a home. You need a team of professionals on your side. You found a realtor you trust to handle the purchase. Now trust him to refer you to a mortgage broker. He’d be committing career suicide to refer you to a shyster. * * * Dear Mary: After taking a few years off to raise my kids, I’ve decided to re-enter the workforce. I’m nervous about potential salary negotiations. I never know how far to push my request or how much more I can ask for once the company has made an offer. I want to maxi-mize my earnings but I don’t want to spoil my
chances, either. What’s the best way to handle the process? -- Cindy, Nevada
Dear Cindy: Research your market value before you have that first interview. Talk to friends and acquaintances in the business. Consult em-ployment agencies or websites like www.Salary.com that offer information about current salary ranges and benefits in your field. Once you get to the interview stage, pay careful attention during the interview. If the manag-er is expecting you to negotiate, she may ask what salary you have in mind. Say honestly what you have learned and the specific amount you have in mind. If she offers a salary at or close to the num-ber you have in mind, accept it. If it doesn’t quite meet your expectations, weigh your response care-fully. You want to be seen as a team player, not an adversary. Perhaps you can negotiate another area like vacation time or the promise of a salary review after six months.

Stay Out of the Wrong Hands Every once in a while, I get a message from a reader that reminds me to remind you of one very important thing: Dog training is an unlicensed indus-try. Anyone can hang a shingle and call them-selves a dog trainer, a dog behaviorist or a dog psy-chologist. Your best defense is some solid 411. It’s up to you to ensure your dog doesn’t end up in the wrong hands -- hands like these: We adopted a puppy last year, and ever since we brought him home, he has been nipping and bit-ing. We met with a woman who trains dogs, and she said it could be an issue. She advised us to pinch his lips against his teeth as soon as he nips to show that it hurts. It doesn’t faze him at all. He jumps up on us, lunges at us and bites. He is a good dog otherwise. This is just one example of the bad training advice that’s out there. You might hear it from your neighbor, your groomer or your own mother. But the most sinister version of bad advice is that which comes from a “professional trainer” who professes to “care about animals” and then suggests or performs any of the following “techniques”: -- the rolled-up newspaper as a swatting de-vice for any part of your dog’s anatomy -- rubbing his nose in his own mess -- yelling -- pointing -- hitting -- spanking -- stepping on his paws to prevent jumping -- holding his mouth closed to prevent bark-ing -- biting him back to show him what it feels like -- humping him to show him I have no idea what -- pulling his tail -- forcing him onto his back and pinning him to the ground -- isolating him -- depriving him of food or water -- and, clearly, pinching his lips against his teeth. Everything on this list is animal abuse dressed up as dog training. Dogs don’t learn this way. Well, they don’t learn what you want them to learn. Instead, they learn to fear you, to be suspicious of

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9)
Personalized Responsibility Has Role in Cancer Fight The news about cancer continues to be good. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that death rates decreased by 1.6 percent annually from 2004 to 2008 for lung, colorectal and prostate cancer. Death rates from breast cancer have remained stable -- but steep declines occurred in the early 2000s because of re-duced use of hormone replacement therapy. But the death rates from certain cancers are increasing. These include pancreatic, uterine and esophageal cancer. And deaths from malignant melanoma are reaching epidemic proportions, par-ticularly in the Sun Belt States. While the overall rates of death are falling, the actual numbers of cancers are increasing as the 72 million baby boomers reach old age. In 2011, the American Cancer Society reported 1.6 million newly diagnosed cancers and 580,000 deaths. The most common were lung (160,000 deaths), colorectal (49,000 deaths), breast (39,000 deaths), pancreas (37,000 deaths) and prostate (34,000 deaths). Many cancers are more common in families that may carry certain genes that increase the risk of certain cancers, such as colon, breast, bladder and uterus. The risk of colon and prostate cancer is much higher in blacks than whites. For anyone who is at increased risk, diligent screening is criti-cal to identify and treat cancer as early as possible. Screening may be required at a much earlier age for those at high risk. And while there is controversy about the use of the PSA to screen for prostate cancer in healthy men, there is agreement that it should be done in high-risk individuals and populations. We must un-derstand that we are all at risk for cancer, and every one of us should follow the standard guidelines for screening for the common cancers afflicting us. While we cannot do much about our genes, there is general consensus that we can reduce our cancer risk. Over the past 50 years, concerted ef-forts have been undertaken to reduce pollutants in the environment and in our food that can cause cancer. Smoking cessation and avoiding excessive exposure to irradiation (which occurs each time a CT scan is done) should always be encouraged. Just as critical is the compelling link between
cancer and obesity, the foods we eat and a seden-tary lifestyle. According to the National Cancer Insti-tute, there is a strong relationship between obesity and the risk of colorectal, breast (after the meno-pause), pancreatic, esophageal, thyroid and gall bladder cancer. But whether the threat is our weight or our food choices is still not clear. We do know that a high-fat diet increases cancer risk irrespec-tive of weight. And the kind of fat is key. Diets high in saturated fats (from animal products) and poly-unsaturated fats (soy, corn and safflower) increase cancer risk. By contrast, monounsaturated fats found in olive and canola oil decrease cancer risk. Omega 6 fatty acids found in animal fat increase cancer risk, while omega 3 found in nuts and fish oil reduces risk. It is not how much fat but which fats you eat that are important. Cancer also is more prevalent in those who become overweight because of too many calories from sugar and starches. This increases the risk of diabetes and cancer. The message is clear: A healthful, prudent diet is essential to reduce the risk of obesity and to decrease the risk of the most common diseases leading to our demise (vascular disease and cancer). And finally, more and more evidence in-dicates a link between a sedentary lifestyle and cancer. Numerous research studies have shown a strong link between inactivity and a higher risk of colon, breast, uterine, and prostate cancer. And the risk of lung cancer is 20 percent higher in smokers who are inactive as compared to those who exer-cise. There is much to celebrate about advances made against cancer. Lifestyle changes have de-creased the risk, and improved screening and bet-ter therapies have led to more and more cures. But much needs to be done. More research is needed to optimize diagnosis and treatment, and we must personally commit to doing everything possible to assure that we remain cancer free.

Dr. David Lipschitz
you, to guard against you, to brace themselves when they see you coming or even go on the offensive. No reputable trainer would employ or advo-cate the use of any of these tactics with the goal of educating a dog. Next time you’re shopping for a dog trainer, first do a little research and think about how you’d like your dog to be treated during the training pro-cess. Consider your dog’s personality -- shy, effusive, aloof, dominant -- and think twice about a trainer who doesn’t consider it, as well. You don’t teach a shy dog the same way you would a dominant dog. The tone of voice, the physicality and the actual tools a trainer uses will vary from dog to dog based largely on tem-perament and personality. Here are some things to discuss with poten-tial dog trainers before you even schedule an in-per-son consultation: -- Do you have any recent references I can contact? -- What is your philosophy on dog training? You’re looking for a value statement here. -- How do you motivate dogs to learn new behaviors? Food? Fear? Intimidation? Positive rein-forcement? Personally, I believe in motivating dogs with lots of love, praise and affection. -- Ask whether they have experience either developing or discouraging any particular behaviors that apply to your situation. -- Ask about their history as a dog trainer -- education, experience, failures, proudest moments -- and listen with an ear for whether this person is a professional trainer or someone who “grew up with dogs.” -- Finally, ask them how they work with dog owners. A lot of dog training boils down to human training. The problem with a bad dog trainer is that they could do so much more than simply fail to de-liver. They could make it worse. Much worse. Woof!
Dog trainer Matthew “Uncle Matty” Margolis is co-author of 18 books about dogs, a behaviorist, a popular radio and television guest, and host of the PBS series “WOOF! Benefits for Little Ones Cause Big Stink Sometimes I am just blown away by the reac-tion I get to a column. I write what I think is the most innocuous and non-controversial answer to some-one’s question about Social Security benefits -- and then, out of the blue, my email inbox is flooded with letters. Some of them have an inquisitive “this can’t possibly be true” tone, while others are downright angry. The most recent example of this phenom-enon occurred following a column I wrote a few weeks ago in which I answered a question from a re-tiree about the benefits due to his wife and children. Many readers were shocked, and some irritated, to learn that a retiree’s children and his younger wife could qualify for monthly Social Security checks on his account. Here’s a typical response: “You must be wrong about benefits due a retiree’s children. Surely those kinds of benefits are only paid if the children are disabled.” Here is another: “I’ve always heard that children get benefits if a parent has died, but I can’t believe that they get checks if their father has retired.” And finally, one of the typical angry re-sponses: “Why should a 55 year old woman get So-cial Security checks on her husband’s record? She should be working and supporting herself. And their kids don’t need money! These people really know how to milk the system. It’s just another benefit the liberals have tacked on to Social Security to appease the masses!” It may surprise many of my readers to learn this “tacking on” was done in 1939 -- just three years after the Social Security Act was signed and one year before the first monthly Social Security benefits were paid. In other words, Social Security has been paying benefits to the children of retirees, and to the mothers (and rarely fathers) of those kids, for more than 70 years now. Many of you wondered why they would get such benefits. The original intent of Social Secu-rity was to partially replace the income that taxpay-ers and their legal dependents lose when they (the taxpayers) stop working -- because of retirement, disability, or death. The law clearly spells out who those dependents are. It’s a spouse over age 62 who doesn’t have his or her own Social Security benefit; it’s a widow(er) over age 60; it’s a child under age 18 (or over 18 if disabled); and it’s the mother (and more recently the father) of any minor kids still at home -- unless that mother or father is working, in which case the earnings penalty rules (explained many times in this column) would prevent them from getting benefits. And for those of you who are convinced that this is just another example of the erosion of that good old “pull yourselves up by the bootstraps” American mentality, I think you should relax. These benefits are not very common. After all, there aren’t that many retirees (i.e., folks in their mid to late 60s and older) who have minor children at home.
For biological reasons, there obviously are hardly any women who have young kids at home when they reach Social Security age. It’s a differ-ent story with men, of course, especially consider-ing that there are more than a few old goats married (usually for the second time) to a younger woman -- and they might have some teeny boppers still at home when he signs up for Social Security. But the numbers show it really doesn’t hap-pen all that often. There are about 54 million peo-ple getting Social Security checks. Out of all those, about 579,000, or about one percent of all benefits, are going to children of retirees. It is more likely that the children of some-one getting Social Security disability checks would be getting monthly dependent’s benefits. There are 1.8 million kids getting checks on the account of a disabled parent. And there are about 2 million kids getting monthly Social Security checks because their mother or father has died. Finally, there are about 100,000 young moth-ers getting Social Security from their retired hus-band’s account. That’s just one-tenth of one percent of all benefits paid. And you can literally almost count on your fingers and toes the number of depen-dent fathers getting benefits because they are caring for the young children of a retired woman. * * *
Q: I am 68 years old. I have a 47-year-old wife, and we have a son with Down syn-drome who is about to turn 18. He is getting Social Security checks on my record. We’ve heard conflicting stories about whether his benefits will continue after age 18. Can you ex-plain the rules? (My wife doesn’t get any ben-efits because she is working full time.)
A: Your son’s benefits will continue indef-initely. Benefits to a dependent child normally stop at age 18, and sometime can be paid until age 19 if the child is still in high school. But those benefits can go on for life if a son or daughter is severely disabled, and has been dis-abled since childhood. In fact, of the 4.3 million “chil-dren” who are getting Social Security dependent’s benefits, about 950,000 are getting what the law calls “disabled adult child” payments. “Adult” is the key word, because many of these beneficiaries are folks well into their 30s, 40s, and 50s. (Remember though, they have been severely disabled since they were
kids.) If you filed for your retirement benefits quite a few years ago, my hunch is they didn’t do any dis-ability development for your son, since he was eligi-ble for checks simply because he was a minor child. That means you will have to fill out some paperwork to establish his disability in Social Security’s records. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you talk to your local Social Security office about this before his 18th birthday. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar-genau has the answer. When Medicines Fail to Quell Heartburn DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I hope you can help me with my problem. I am 25, and I have a serious case of GERD, which is causing me a huge amount of discomfort and frustration. I’ve seen two different doctors about this and have been put on four different kinds of medicines. I have followed all the directions exactly and none of them are working. I also have palpitations throughout the day. I’ve been told by doctors and nurses that there is nothing dangerous about them. I’d like to know if this true. -- J.C.
ANSWER: GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disorder -- is heartburn. It’s the upward spurting of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esopha-gus, the swallowing tube, a place that is not able to cope with these corrosive juices the way the stom-ach is. Eliminate or go easy on foods that make GERD worse: citrus fruits; tomatoes; onions; carbon-ated drinks; spicy, fatty or fried foods; chocolate; pep-permint; and caffeine. If you’re overweight, weight loss lessens GERD symptoms. Don’t lie down after eating. Don’t smoke. Sleep with your head, chest and stomach on a slope by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. That position keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Don’t wear any-thing that constricts your stomach, like tight pants or tight belts. Medicines called “proton pump inhibitors” nearly completely turn off acid production. Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Aciphex and Dexilant are their names. If you still have heartburn while on these medicines, it’s OK to use an antacid along with them. If medicines fail, other causes of heartburn need consideration, things like bile reflux or eosino-philic esophagitis. If these conditions aren’t found, then surgical treatment of GERD is an option that’s open to you. Palpitations mean a thumping or racing heart. They can be felt as a thud in the chest. The cause is an extra beat -- or more correctly, a prema-
ture beat -- one that comes before it should. The beat after a premature beat is delayed. During the delay, the heart fills with more blood than usual, and that causes a thump in the chest when the heart emp-ties. Premature beats are almost always innocent and need no treatment. You can believe your doctors and nurses. The booklet on GERD explains this common malady and its treatment. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can you give me insight into the Hamman-Rich syndrome? My father passed away from it. -- L.R.
ANSWER: I can tell you only a little, because only a little is known about it. It’s a lung injury that comes on suddenly, with damage to the lung air sacs (the alveoli) and the spaces between the air sacs, the interstitium. The cause is unknown. Because of such destruction, oxygen can-not get into the blood. Patients are severely short of breath, have a fever and they cough. The only medicines are ones to keep the person going as best as possible. There is no cure medicine. Even with a ventilator, death happens to more than 60 percent of these patients. It’s an illness that reminds doctors that they don’t have an answer for every malady. You and your family have my condolences. ***
Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Helpful Gadgets JustFor Seniors There’s a website that rates gadgets just for us! Elder Gadget ranks cameras, computers and more with an eye to how senior friendly they are. Besides an overall rating, it categorizes products in terms of easy to see, easy to use, easy to hear and easy to understand. If that’s not enough, it even gives each item a “Cool Factor” number. If you’re going to buy a gift for a senior or want something unique and helpful for yourself, www.eldergadget.com might well be a good place to check reviews for useful items. How about a pair of reading glasses that come with two tiny lights next to the lenses? No need for a flashlight if you need to look at some-thing in a low-light situation. What about a talking thermometer for when you’re cooking? You won’t need to squint at the tiny numbers on your digital thermometer anymore. Then there are the easy-to-use cameras, those with simple menus that still have a whopping 12 megapixels to take really sharp photos. And how about a small digital emergency-alert radio to use if the electrical power is out? By using the hand crank, you don’t need to use batter-ies. You’ll get emergency broadcasts and advance warning if bad weather is coming. One of the best gadgets on the site is a temperature control faucet light. If the water is cool, the color stays blue. Once the temperature rises above 89 degrees F, the light becomes red. No more putting your hands under water that’s too hot! The best place to start exploring www.eldergadget.com is with the Find A Review drop-down list on the left side of the screen. It offers more than a dozen categories, including games, cell phones, laptops and lots more.

Creating Happiness Q: Several years ago I became ac-quainted with a lady who has now become one of my best friends. She is one of the happiest and most upbeat people I know, and every time we meet she lifts my spirits. I have asked her how she manages to stay so positive and seem-ingly carefree, and she says she really doesn’t know. Her “motto” is simply to take life in stride and not to let the bad things get the best of her. I wish I could be that way. What is the secret that makes some peo-ple able to do this, while others can’t?
A: I believe the “secret” is that all of us at some point in our lives have made the choice of adopting either a positive attitude or a negative one. Our attitude dictates whether we are happy and positive, or basically unhappy and negative. It is our choice to either to rise above our circumstances and not allow them to have control over us, or to simply yield to our circumstances and let them dictate our emotional reaction and behavior. Your lady friend has obviously chosen to adopt and maintain a positive attitude. This type of attitude creates the cheerful personality that natu-rally attracts others, which is exactly why you feel your spirits uplifted when you are with her. A positive attitude also makes us more will-ing to be of help to others. Recently, upon leaving a restaurant, I witnessed a teenage boy who noticed an older woman with a walker trying to get the exit door open. He stepped in front of her and held the door open until she went through. And last week, as I exited a train lugging two heavy pieces of luggage, a young man walking be-hind me spoke up and said, “Want me to carry one of those bags for you?” I gladly let him do so, and shook his hand when we parted, thanking him for his thoughtfulness. Doing helpful things for others is just one of the earmarks of a cheerful, positive attitude. My advice for you is to spend as much time with your lady friend as possible and let some of her cheerful demeanor wear off on you! * * *
Q: My husband and I were pleasantly surprised when our new neighbors came over last week and introduced themselves. They seemed quite pleasant, and we appreciated it. However, just before they left, the wife asked if we had any addictions. We just laughed it off and didn’t really comment. What do you sup-

● On May 6, 1911, George Maledon, the man who executed at least 60 men for “Hanging Judge” Isaac Parker, dies of natural causes in Tennessee. Paid $100 for each hanging, he tried to be a consci-entious hangman who minimized suffering with a quick death. Maledon considered the job “honorable and respectable work.”
● On April 30, 1927, the Federal Industri-al Institution for Women, the first women’s federal prison, opens in Alderson, W.Va. All women serving federal sentences of more than a year were to be brought there, with the vast majority imprisoned for drug and alcohol charges imposed during the Prohi-bition era.
● On May 1, 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicates New York City’s Empire State Building. The entire 102-story building went up in just over a year, under budget (at $40 million) and well ahead of schedule. During certain periods of build-ing, the frame grew an astonishing four-and-a-half stories a week.

● On May 3, 1952, a ski-modified U.S. Air Force C-47 becomes the first aircraft to land on the North Pole. On the flight was Dr. Albert P. Crary, a scientist who in 1961 traveled to the South Pole by motorized ve-hicle, becoming the first person in history to have stood on both poles.
● On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays hits his 512th ca-reer home run to break Mel Ott’s National League record. Mays would finish his ca-reer with 660 home runs, good for third on the all-time list at the time of his retirement.

pose she meant, and why did she ask such a question?
A: That’s a tough one to answer. For a first meeting, it seems an odd question to ask a strang-er. I suppose we all have our own addictions in one form or another, but people don’t normally choose to discuss them with people they’ve barely met. Addic-tions can take many forms and range from caffeine to alcohol, drugs, food, nicotine, sweets, gambling, sex -- and the list goes on and on. On the surface, her question may appear to be a rather poor attempt at humor, but it could be her way of sounding you out to see if you share some common ground. Perhaps she is struggling with an addiction of her own and needs someone to talk to. I think it’s a safe bet that as you and your hus-band get better acquainted with your new neighbors your question will be answered in due time. Mean-while, allow your new friendship to develop and take its own course .

Profitable Glass Table Set Still Sparkles Q: I enjoy your column in the paper and hope you can answer my question. About 20 years ago, an antique shop dealer told me my pictured set of dishes is called a breakfast set. My husband received the set from his grand-mother after she died. It is trimmed in gold and has strawberries; it is unmarked and in excel-lent condition. We are curious about how old our set is and its value.
A: You have a four-piece table set that was made by Indiana Glass Co., which was located in Dunkirk, Ind. The “Panelled Strawberry” pattern was available in clear glass, rose-colored glass and clear with gold trim. Indiana Glass Co. made water sets, table sets, berry dishes, celery vases, goblets and sauce dishes in this pattern. “Panelled Strawberry” was introduced in 1913 and priced at $2 for the four-piece set. After be-ing in business in Dunkirk for over 100 years, they closed their doors. The value of your set today would probably be $250 to $275.
Q: This mark is on the bottom of a por-celain figurine of a young woman leaning against a rock. The overall height is 15 inches -- it is in perfect condition. I inherited it from my great-aunt and would like to know who made it and if it has value.
A: Royal Dux Co. created your figurine around 1900. Founded by E. Eichler in 1860, the company is also known as the Duxer Porzellan Manu-faktur. It was located in Dux, Bohemia, which is now Duchov, Czech Republic. Royal Dux porcelains are very collectible and yours would probably be worth $400 to $500.
Q: I have a porcelain pitcher that has been in my family for generations. It is deco-rated with lemons, flowers and leaves against a cream background and holds approximately two quarts. Marked on the bottom are an artist’s palette and scrolled letters inside a circle. What can you tell me about the manufac-turer, age and value of my pitcher?

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing. As most of us know by now, Bubba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too. For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a custom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the com-pany announced after the tournament. Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uniforms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase aware-ness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of mak-ing fun of the color. And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoenix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so. But his manner of dress and that unortho-dox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tournament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders. Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each outfit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit. While both Sanders and Watson are philan-thropists and champions, they have something else in common -- they’re both self-taught golfers. Nei-ther has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.” Well, Watson surely will be beating it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one sugges-tion -- and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree -- you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a playoff, but this isn’t hock-ey, you know.

The Future of Golf Instruction is MAT-T
The biggest challenge in learning the golf swing and its various components and sensations is that traditional golfinstruction is limited to the amount of feedback the studentreceives to experience the correct feelings of a particularswing. Golf instructors can share drills and feedback to theirstudents but many times the student doesn’t seem to latch on to the correct feelings and when they do, those feelingsseem to disappear without any explanation. Whether that isfrom shot to shot or from day to day. But new technology ismaking it clearer for the student to capture the sensations ofgreat swings.Motion Analysis Technology (MAT-T) is an extraordinary newtechnology that elevates swing analysis to an entirely newlevel and heightens the clarity of the student to feel the appropriate sensations of the swing.MAT-T gathers vital swing information and statistics usingmultiple high-speed cameras. MAT-T distills that informationto create a three-dimensional animated image of your swingthat is viewable from any angle with detailed data for greaterprecision in making adjustments for a better swing. Notice in the picture that the sensors on my body are collecting thedata to produce the image of my swing on the screen. Now, how does this relate to you and your swing? For all ofyou beginners out there, you can now feel what a good golfswing feels like at a much faster pace than if you were to justgo out and beat balls on the range. For all of you that have played golf before, you now can have exact digital statisticson what you are doing well when you are making your bestswings, no matter how good or bad you may think they are. Now we take that date and help you reproduce your verybest swings with more consistency as we make gradualadjustments to help you improve your way to better swingsand lower scores.
Rob Stanger is recognized by Golf Magazine as a 2007-2008 TopTeachers West Region. He teaches in the Desert at The College Golf Performance Center. To view more tips or video golf instructiongo to www.robstanger.com. You can contact Rob at 760-409-8628for inquiries about your golf game.
The future of golf instructionis MAT-T The biggest obstacle in learning the right feel in the golf swing is that traditional instruction is limited to the feedback the student gets from the instructor’s observations. Despite repetitive drills and practice, the student often can’t connect with the right “feel” needed in the swing, or at least how to maintain it on a day-to-day basis. But new technology is making it possible to cap-ture the feel of great swings. Motion Analysis Technology (MAT-T) is an extraordinary new system that elevates swing analysis to a new level that allows the student to feel, review and practice these sensations. Using strategically placed body sensors and high-speed three-dimensional cameras, MAT-T gathers vital swing information and replays it in animated images viewable from any angle. As shown in the photos, the equipment senses my every movement and displays it on the screen. This new techonology can prevent the beginner from developing bad habits, and allow seasoned players to develop maximum effectiveness in their swing. Better than simply beating balls out on the range, you can now have digital statistics showing exactly what you’re doing well in your best swings, and then work on reproducing them for precision and consistency - and lower scores.

small coastal area along the California-Oregon border. Appropriately, this region is called the Easter Lily Capital of the World.
• According to the National Geographic book, “The 10 Best of Everything,” the best garden in the world is at the Château De Versailles in Versailles, France. The garden was the desire of King Louis XIV and was designed by French landscape designer, André Le Nôtre in the 17th century. Over 250 acres of ornamental lakes, flower beds, and over 200,000 trees graced the park.
• A storm that struck Versailles in December 1999 caused major damage. Among the destroyed trees were two tulip trees from Virginia planted by Marie-Antoinette in 1783; the oldest tree in the park, planted during the reign of Louis XIV, known as “Marie-Antoinette’s oak;” the Corsican pine of Napoléon, plus numerous others. In all, 10,000 trees had to be removed. Even though the damage was extensive, good has come from the storm. Neglected areas of the park have been restored and over 50,000 new trees have been planted.
• While the spring season may be a wonderful time to see the blooms of Versailles, don’t forget to notice the ones all around where you live. ● Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.
● Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

Even our attention to safetyis a relief. When you fill your prescription at Walgreens, rest assured that it is carefully checked for potentially unsafe drug interactions with
other prescriptions you’ve filled at Walgreens and over-the-counter medications that you tell us about.
If there’s a problem, we’ll work with your doctor to provide you with another option.
Walgreens makes it easy to switch your prescription from a different pharmacy. Just bring in your prescription bottles. No need to call your doctor or wait for your current prescription to run out.
To learn about other services that will help you feel better about your pharmacy care, visit Walgreens.com.
