Jonathan Dierdorff,

Associate Pastor

I am grateful that I get to be a part of the Forrest

Burdette community as we celebrate 100 years of ministry

in Hurricane. As I have been reflecting on the 100th

Anniversary, I have considered the question, what does it

mean for Forrest Burdette UMC to turn 100? As it has been

mentioned several times in worship, the church is not a

building (besides, the physical plant has gone through

several dramatic transitions in the last century!). Likewise,

it is not about celebrating the past and the way that things

used to be; rather, it is about celebrating God, the good

news of Jesus Christ, and the continuity of ministry as the

church marches onward to be the hands and feet of Jesus in

Putnam County.

Furthermore, I think we should also consider, what

lessons can we learn from 100 years of ministry? To my

knowledge, we don’t have any charter members still with

us, but we can still reflect and ask critical questions about

the last 100 years that will help the church move forward in

ministry. The one prevailing theme I recognize in the

history of the church is the necessity to make changes in

order to reach others with the good news. Parishioners and

clergy have planted seeds at Forrest Burdette over the last

century, and we are now enjoying the fruit of their labor. I

believe that our responsibility is to continue to be faithful in

our ministry today, while planting seeds for the future.

Perhaps we will never reap the harvest that we now sow,

and perhaps at times we will have to make difficult choices

to ensure the wellbeing of the church’s future, but like those

who have gone before us, we often have to look beyond our

present concerns to plant seeds for future generations.

Mission Outreach

UMCOR Cleaning Bucket Collection: Coming in May through June 7th, the

Mission Outreach Team will be sponsoring

an UMCOR Cleaning Bucket Collection.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief

(UMCOR) is dedicated to alleviating human suffering

around the globe. UMCOR’s work reaches people in

more than 80 countries, including the United

States. They provide humanitarian relief when war,

conflict, or natural disaster disrupts life to such an extent

that communities are unable to recover on their own.

Relief-supply kits help provide care for the most

vulnerable people during times of crisis. UMCOR

collects 6 types of kits for global distribution and

cleaning buckets for US distribution after storms. We will

be collecting cleaning buckets which will enable people

to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a

flood or hurricane. Be watching for a supply list and an

example of a cleaning bucket in mid-May! For further

information on UMCOR and the relief kits go to

www.umcor.org.

Community Cupboard Month is May:

The month of May is FBMUMC’s month to serve at

the Community Cupboard. The sign-up board is in the

Narthex, and there is still space available. This outreach

ministry is such a tremendous blessing to so many

families in our community. Please keep the families as

well as the workers in your prayers! For additional

information, contact Eddie Ellison at 304.743.9832.

Jeremy Daniels,

Director of Youth & Young Adult

Ministries

“I’m not ashamed of the gospel: it is God’s own power for

salvation to all who have faith in God, to the Jew first and

also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16 (CEB)

Talk about a warm, welcoming church. The

parishioners and members of Forrest Burdette Memorial

UMC have been nothing short of fantastic in their

welcoming me here as your new Director of Youth and

Young Adult Ministries. My favorite Bible verse is Romans

1:16, not only because it’s a reminder that we should be

living our life for Christ unashamed, but it’s also a reminder

that God’s love is available to ALL. Much like I’ve

experienced God’s love from ALL that I have met so far

here at Forrest Burdette, I want to be able to share His love

with each and every one that I continue to meet and come

in contact with. As I continue to get settled in, I hope that I

can be as friendly and welcoming to you and your families

as we join together in ministry.

May brings us many opportunities to serve within our

church, as well as outside these church walls.

May 2nd is our Touch-A-Truck event. This is the final

fundraiser for our youth group to assist

in funding their Reach Workcamp

2015 trip. The event runs from 11:00

a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Valley (Wave

Pool) Parking lot. Touch-A-Truck is a

unique event for children (and adults)

of all ages to get behind the wheel of the vehicles and meet

the heroes that make our town run! The cost is $5.00/person

or 5 for $20.00 pre-event.

May 3rd is the Contemporary Christian Music artist

Matthew West concert that’s being held at the Clay

Center in Charleston. We are hoping to

have several Youth and Young Adults

attend this wonderful worship opportunity

through the word and music. Concert starts

at 7:00 p.m.

Senior Roast: Don’t forget to come and share your

memories of this year’s Senior Class as we prepare our

annual Senior Roast service on Wednesday night, May

20th.

I’m looking forward to serving Christ alongside each

and every one of you.

Uth: Students between 6th -12th grades unite from 6:30-

8 p.m. on Wednesdays in the basement of the church to

hang out, bond with friends, eat snacks, play games, and

worship God through music, God’s Word, and small

groups.

Sunday Night Group (S.N.G.): Sunday Night Group is a

time for Uth to grow deeper with God. We currently meet

@ 6PM in the basement with G.L.A.M. (High School

Girls) but are wanting to get the Dusty Men (High School

Boys) back up and running. If you’re interested in

digging deeper into the word of God; come check it out

with us!

Reach Work Camp (July 19-25): We continue to

welcome your prayers for this year’s trip and those

participating.

Soup Kitchen: The soup kitchen takes place every 3rd

Saturday of every month. This is open to all ages;

anybody can go, but we highly encourage our Uth to go

and serve West Virginia! We meet at the church, leave at

10 a.m., and head down to Huntington to a local

Salvation Army and serve food, sing songs, and get

personal with those who extremely need love.

Traci Dunmire,

Director of Children’s Outreach

Ministry

“She opens her mouth with wisdom,

and the teaching of kindness is on her

tongue. She looks well to the ways of

her household and does not eat the

bread of idleness.” Proverbs 31:26-27

Spring is upon us, and we are excited for the many

activities that will happen this month!

COM will be having our Mother’s Day Luncheon on

May 7 & 8 from 10:45-12:00. We can’t wait to celebrate

our mommies! The Book Fair will be up and running in the

Fellowship Hall May 4–8. Please stop in and see what

Scholastic has to offer. The fair is open to the church, and

you can stop in the preschool office for payment or book

fair information.

COM will be closed for Memorial Day on May 25th.

Lastly, our Spring Program will be May 28th in the

Sanctuary beginning at 6:30. We proudly salute our

preschool graduates and will promote our younger

students to their next class. We know God has big plans

for our little ones! Family Fun Day will follow on May

29th with the grand finale of a family cook out and ice

cream from Huskies. Please plan on attending

all the fun! COM has had a wonderful

school year, and we thank our families

and the church for sharing space and

sowing the seeds of God’s love.
