In the fall 2005 semester thefaculty and staff of the School ofPhysical Education votedoverwhelmingly (86%) to relocatefrom the Coliseum either partially orcompletely to the St. Francis facilityacquired by West Virginia University. This decision was precipitated by theexpansion of programs and theaccompanying need for additionalspace within the School of PhysicalEducation and with the Departmentof Intercollegiate Athletics.Extended Learning and ROTCprograms were also identified asprograms in need of space and wereincluded as potential units to considerin the transition process.

On April 13, 2006 a transitionteam appointed by Dr. Brooks, deanof the School of Physical Education, was convened to discuss the possiblestrategies for occupying St. Francis. The committee included the followingSchool of Physical Education

personnel: Lynn Housner, associatedean, co-chair; Louise Christiansen, visiting committee chair; DallasBranch, program coordinator, SportManagement Program; LindaCarson, director, Motor DevelopmentCenter; Andrew Ostrow, director,International Center for PerformanceExcellence; Vince Stilger, programcoordinator, Athletic TrainingProgram; Jack Watson, assistantprofessor, Sport and ExercisePpsychology Program; TracyWheeler, Business Office; BruceWilmoth, director, Lifetime ActivitiesProgram; and Dan Ziatz, programcoordinator, Athletic CoachingEducation Program. The committeealso includes the following WVUpersonnel: Russ Dean, associateprovost, co-chair; Sue Day-Peroots,dean, Extended Learning; and RobMoyer, interim director of FacilitiesPlanning.

After much deliberation thetransition committee submitted thefollowing three options to the provostfor consideration.

Option 1: Physical Educationwould use the existing St. Francisschool adn annex building, relocatingonly Physical Education space fromthe Coliseum.

Option 2: Using the existing St.Francis school and annex space, asecond floor would be built above thegym area. The ROTC programs,Extended Learning, and part ofPhysical Education would be housedin the facility.

Option 3: A new building wouldbe constructed to house ROTC,Extended Learning, and all ofPhysical Education, both from theColiseum and Stansbury Hall.

Option 3 was the preferredoption followed by Option 1. Option2 was the least preferred option.

We are currently awaiting theprovost’s decision.

Possible Move for the School of Physical Education

Beginning in January 2006, theOffice of the Dean, WVU School ofPhysical Education established aName Change Task Force. Thecharge given to the Task Force wasto propose by July 1, 2006 a newname for the School of PhysicalEducation that reflected the diversityof academic disciplines within thecurrent School. Members of theTask Force reviewed severalhundred names of colleges andschools within the United States thathoused one or more of the currentacademic programs found in theSchool.

The Task Force identified keywords (e.g., sport, performance, physical activity) that members feltmight be of value for inclusion in aproposed title. The Task Force thendetermined that the final name

Name Change Task Force Recommends New Nameselected must best meet thefollowing five evaluative criteria:anticipate growth opportunities;encompass existing programs; avoidoverlapping across campus;communicate effectively; andprovide marketing appeal.

The Task Force prepared awritten justification for inclusion ofthe word “College” rather than“School” in the title. Based on thefive criteria above, the Task Forcethen identified five names that wereincluded in a survey format: Collegeof Allied Sport and PerformanceSciences; College of PerformanceExcellence; College of PhysicalActivity and Performance Sciences;College of Physical Activity andSport Sciences; and College ofPhysical Activity Sciences.

A survey was created by thetask force and administered to a totalof 250 undergraduate and graduatestudents and 25 faculty membersacross the five academic programs inthe School. The survey was alsoadministered to selected school staffand members of the VisitingCommittee. The results of the surveyindicated that 100% of theconstituency groups identified aboveranked one name as their first(88.24%) or second (11.76%)choice. Based on these data, theName Change Task Forcerecommended to the Office of theDean that the School of PhysicalEducation be renamed the Collegeof Physical Activity and SportSciences.
