Why Break Down Game Film?

It’s Your Number #1 Officiating Tool!• Video Does Not Lie!

• Find A Way To Get Video of your game.

• If you want to improve, take the time to watch

yourself work.• Make notes on calls(correct and incorrect)

as well as positions and review them prior

to your next game.

Things to Look for……

• First, look only at your non-verbal appearance to see if it answers what you

want it to….calm, confident, happy to be here and ready to run the game.

• Look at your movement… how you run and move in to position.

How to Analyze ……While viewing, hit pause occasionally, paying attention to

where the officials are.• Are they in the correct position with open looks?• Are they focusing on their primary? When looking at specific plays, correct or not correct, always

stop the video and ask the question – WHY? • Did we miss it due to poor positioning, or did we get it right due to good positioning?

Focus On…1. Coverage

• Primary• Secondary• Competitive Matchups• Active and Engaged

2. Open Angles3. Position Adjustments4. Rotations5. Transition Speed6. Play Calling Accuracy7. Mechanics8. Body Language9. Athleticism

Contact…Marginal or IllegalSpecific Plays We Need To

Pay Attention To On Video…

• Displacement• Freedom of Movement• RSBQ

• Rhythm• Speed• Balance• Quickness

• Start/Develop/Finish• Impact to dribbler, shooter and rebounder

Certainty of Calls….. Do you think versus

Do you know?

Eliminate Guesswork!

Consider Time Of Game!

Fouls on Key Players!

4th Quarter• HIGH CERTAINTY

CALLS!• NO 50/50 CALLS!

Critique Yourself…..Critique Yourself……• Be your own worst critic.• Be honest with yourself.• Be open to feedback from others.• Ask for help from other successful officials, not your best friend.• Try suggestions before you dismiss them.• Understand – your “A” game is the way you should be reffing every time you take the court.
