In 2004 sales of Industrial valvesworldwide were just under $40billion and it is reported that by2010, annual sales will exceed$50 billion. The McIlvaineCompany report is optimisticand sees the market continuingto grow for a number of reasons:
(1) Water infrastructure needsin developing countries: themove of the rural population tocities is greatly increasing theneed for water and wastewatertreatment systems. By 2010 thiswill be an $8 billion market forvalves.
(2) Rapid increase in energysupply: China is increasing coal-fired electrical generatingcapacity at a rate in excess of
10% per year. India and otherdeveloping Asian countries areincreasingly turning to coal forfuture electricity needs. A coalplant requires four times theinvestment in valves as does acombined cycle gas turbine plant.
(3) Industrial expansion in Asia:the need for cement, iron andsteel, chemicals, pharma-ceuticals and other products inAsia is continuing to result inincreases in valve revenues.
(4) Synthetic oil development:the Sasol complex in SouthAfrica has more valves than anyother facility in the world. Itproduces gasoline from coal.Larger versions of this plant areunder development in China.
