US EPA approves AkzoNobel GLDAchelates
AkzoNobel has secured US EPAapproval for its L-glutamic acid, N,N-di (acetic acid), tetrasodium salt(GLDA) chelates for use in non-contact pesticide compositions. Thechelating agent, marketed asDissolvine GL, is now included in theEPA’s list of approved FIFRA InertIngredients, allowing the product tobe used in non-food applicationpesticide products at a maximumconcentration of 5% weight.Meanwhile, Dissolvine GL is claimedto enhance preservative function andhelp reduce discoloration in personalcare products.

PCCA has selected Univar toexclusively distribute its all-natural,scent-free ingredient NataPres, whichoffers effective natural preservation inpersonal care products. NataPreswas developed for non-paraben andnon-formaldehyde containingpreservation with effectiveness in awide pH range. The ingredient actsagainst Gram-positive and -negativebacteria. When applied in normallevels, the ingredient showed activityagainst fungi and yeast.

Anti-dumping duty on soda ash likelyto impact detergent prices
The Indian detergent industry, whichis worth some Rup 100 bn (c €1.7bn), has aired concerns over theimposition of the antidumping duty onimports of soda ash from China at16% for 20 Apr 2010-19 Apr 2011and at 14% from 20 Apr 2011 to 19Apr 2012 by India’s DirectorateGeneral of Safeguards. This actionhas deteriorated the situation and isexpected to cause a hike in the priceof detergents by 10-12% by virtue ofsoda ash being a major raw material.Soda ash constitutes 30% of the totalproduct formulation costs of low-priced detergents and 15% forpremium detergents. The IndianGovernment is also investigatingalleged dumping of soda ash by theEU, Kenya, Pakistan, Iran, Ukraineand the US. There are about 1000brands of detergent in India.

Rhodia to increase IBCH productioncapacity in China
In China, Rhodia is moving IBCHproduction from Wuxi to Zhenjiang,Jiangsu province. The transfer willenable IBCH production capacity tobe increased, and production is dueto commence at the new facility in2011. IBCH is a fragrance ingredientused in cosmetics, personal careproducts and homecare products.
Rhodia markets IBCH under theRhodiantal brand.

GEA Liquid Processing is taking partin a new €3 M turnkey project forLebortovo Capital Partners Ltd in theMogilev region of Belarus. The fullyautomatic, multipurpose productionline from GEA will produce skin careand liquid household cleaningproducts for the local market,significantly reducing the region’sdependence on imported products.The new Svoboda production facilitywill operate according to internationalhygiene and production standards.The products themselves will fall intothe category of green and naturalproducts containing the minimum ofadditives and will be produced tomeet the highest standard forsustainability while maintainingsuperior product quality. In line withthe trend in the industry, the objectiveis also to reduce manufacturing costs,waste, energy consumption and theemission of carbon dioxide. GEALiquid Processing, part of GEAProcess Engineering, is the maincontractor for the project responsiblefor designing the production line,supplying the key equipment andhandling the installation andcommissioning.
