Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2015Race Report: Rounds 5&6Fuji International Speedway, JapanJune 5 - 7, 2015

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be in action this weekend at Japan’s picturesque and challenging Fuji International Speedway for Rounds 5&6 of the 14-race 2015 season. The 28-strong field of international driver joins their Porsche Carrera Cup Japan counterparts on the race programme, further strengthening the Porsche motorsport ties in the region following a successful debut there in 2014.Returning to the series in Japan is Martin Ragginger of Team Porsche Holding, absent from Korea last month while on duty at the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours where he and his team mates, amongst them 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Alexandre Imperatori, took a podium finish in their class in a Porsche 997 GT3 R. continued from page 1 Ro Charlz Skyangel. The 25-year-old Singapore driver made his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia debut last season and continues to impress with his increasing pace and consistency amongst the highly-experienced field. Skyangel leads series newcomer, 17-year-old Nico Menzel of PICC Team StarChase, by three points, while Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila of Macau lies fifth on the leaderboard. The points situation is even tighter in the highly-competitive

Class B category for non-professional drivers, where 2012 champion Wayne Shen of Modena Motorsports leads Avila’s Team Jebsen team mate, Yuey Tan of Singapore, by a single point. Just 17 points covers the top six drivers, and fans can expect impressive comebacks from the likes of 100 PLUS Racing Team’s Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak of Thailand, who with two DNFs so far this season has had more than his share of bad luck, and Michael S., fifth in class in Round 2 but with a DNF in the last round dropping him down the leaderboard. The 4.5km Fuji International Speedway, host to a round of the FIA WEC, is a firm favourite with all the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia drivers who have raced there. Its location in the foothills of

the stunning Mount Fuji and its taxing combination of a lightning-quick 1.5km straight on one side, and tight corners on the other, requires both brains and courage to conquer. In addition to the challenges the track layout presents, changeable weather conditions can see grip change quickly and radically. While Bamber took both overall victories in Fuji last year, his protégé Alif Hamdan of Malaysia became only the second Class B driver to stand on the overall Porsche Carrera Cup Asia podium in the series’ history after a stunning second place finish behind his mentor. Hamdan, this year contesting the overall title having clinched the Class B championship in 2014, currently lies ninth on the leaderboard but will be relishing the opportunity to return to the track he mastered so impressively on his debut.

Round 5:

van der Drift Triumphs Over Relentless Ragginger in Fuji Thriller

New Zealand’s Chris van der Drift triumphed in one of the most thrilling races in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia’s 12-year history, successfully fending off a relentless challenge from pole-sitter Martin Ragginger to take the chequered flag after 15-laps of Japan’s 4.56km Fuji International Speedway. van der Drift, contesting his first season in a Porsche, gave his new Chinese Porsche dealer team Kamlung Racing their third consecutive winners’ trophy after crossing the line with the slimmest of margins from the Team Porsche Holding driver. Overall championship leader Craig Baird took third for Clearwater Racing having stayed with the leading duo throughout the race, briefly getting by Ragginger to go second before the hard-charging Austrian snatched back the position.Class B winner was 100 PLUS Racing Team driver Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak of Thailand, successfully converting his pole position into a victory, while OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia took second after yet another epic battle with Team Jebsen’s

Yuey Tan, third. With coveted invitations to race at the Porsche Carrera Cup 24 Hours of Spa 2015 next month at the legendary Spa Francorchamps waiting for whoever leads the overall and Class B championships after Round 6, the heat is on at the top of both leaderboards. While van der Drift may have taken the last three wins, his DNF in Round 2 means he still trails Baird by seven points in the points, who remains in pole position to take on the famed Belgian track. Despite missing out on the last two rounds while on duty at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Ragginger’s thunderous return sees him go joint third in the overall classification with Avila, ahead of Team Yonda’s Ro Charlz Skyangel. In Class B, Tan jumps one point ahead of rival Wayne Shen of Modena

Motorsports with Tjia in third only ten points behind, so everything will rest on the outcome of tomorrow’s race. For van der Drift, Round 5 was won off the start when he snatched the lead from Ragginger who, outside his grid box, had had to reverse back into position just seconds before the start lights came on. Sitting alongside the Austrian on the grid, the Kiwi grabbed his chance: “If Martin had stayed in front off the line, I wouldn’t have been able to pass him. He was super, super fast and thanks to Martin for having a clean race too. There were a couple of moments; especially down the straight where, for the first time, I felt the draft effect. Martin got continued on page 5

continued from page 4beside me and it was like a magnet and cars came together, which was quite interesting. My main concern was making no mistakes and making the car as wide as possible!”For 15 scorching laps, Ragginger had battled to find a way cleanly past his rival, the pair giving a wheel-perfect display of no-holds barred racing on the limit: “It was a cool race, and very close and I enjoyed it a lot! van der Drift was defending and Craig was also pushing very hard and was quick. I was in a sandwich [between van der Drift and Baird], but I think everybody is happy we gave them a great race.”Baird, who had struggled in qualifying to master the deceptively tricky circuit, worked hard to make sure

he was ready should the dueling pair come together: “I was waiting for them to take each other out! It was very exciting watching Chris and Martin from third, I had the best seat in the house. I wasn’t quite good enough to be able to challenge though.”In a race packed with exceptional motorsport, the action was no less intense amongst the Class B field, with drivers dicing for position from lights out to the chequered flag. Vutthikorn was delighted to be back on the top step of the podium for the first time after his return to the championship, while Tjia, who set the fastest lap in the category, enjoyed drafting with friendly rival Tan: “My car just got better as the race went on, especially under braking.” Tan, meanwhile, while adamant his focus was 100% on the race, did admit the promise of Spa isn’t far from his thoughts this weekend: “It’ll be a very long day tomorrow, and I know anything can happen. I wasn’t thinking about it during the race, but I have watched all the classic Spa races on Youtube!”As the lights went out, van der Drift rocketed

into the lead, with Ragginger immediately recovering from his start line error to mount one of the fiercest challenges ever seen in the series. Behind the pair, Baird got away well followed by PICC Team StarChase driver, 17-year-old Nico Menzel, Tan’s team mate Rodolfo Avila, Budweiser Team Absolute Racing’s Tung Ho-Pin. As Baird caught up to the race leaders, Menzel, Avila and Tung tussled for position, with the Chinese ace snatching fourth a third of the way through. Rodolfo took the chase to Tung, the latter spinning off before rejoining to cross the line seventh behind Menzel. As the battle between van der Drift and Ragginger had the crowds on their feet, Baird kept them firmly in his sights, even diving past the Austrian on lap 10 to briefly hold second before the Team Porsche Holding driver reclaimed his place continued on page 6

Page 6: Pcca rounds 5&6 post race report hq

continued from page 5and – headlights ablaze – resumed his quest for the race lead. Behind, while Avila kept his head down, talented Malaysian Alif Hamdan was a man on a mission, staying clear of trouble in amongst the drama and keeping on the power to set the fastest lap of the race. Hamdan eventually finished fifth behind Avila having started from the fourth row of the grid. After a truly momentous race in the foothills of Japan’s majestic Mount Fuji, and with the season approaching its crucial mid-point, Round 6 promises to be equally exciting. van der Drift’s second fastest lap of 1:43.345 in the single qualifying session means he will take pole position with Ragginger lining up alongside, and Menzel and Avila making up the second row. However, with the enticing promise of a chance to tackle Spa’s storied Eau Rouge and going head-to-head with fellow Carrera Cup drivers from across the globe next month, Baird, van der Drift, Tan, Wayne Shen and Tjia must both conquer one of the calendar’s most challenging race tracks and their formidable rivals as Round 6 beckons.

Chris van der Drift took his Kamlung Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to its fourth consecutive Porsche Carrera Cup Asia victory, taking an emphatic win in Round 6 at Japan’s Fuji International Speedway to leap to the top of the overall championship leaderboard. For the second time in as many races, the New Zealander had to fend off a strong challenge from Team Porsche Holding’s Martin Ragginger of Austria, who crossed the line second ahead of Budweiser Team Absolute Racing’s Tung Ho-Pin of China. Tung stormed from his fifth place grid position to claim the final podium place, expertly finding his way through the pack and past Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila.OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia took the Class B win after a flawless drive to the flag, successfully keeping friendly rival Yuey Tan of Team Jebsen at bay. Third was Tjia’s brother and team mate, Christian Chia, taking his second career Porsche Carrera Cup Asia podium. Paul Tresidder of Australia won the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia medal. In the overall standings, van

der Drift leaves Japan with a nine point lead over Clearwater Racing’s Craig Baird, with Ragginger in third, thirty points adrift of the top spot, having missed two rounds. Tan tops the Class B title chase with a nine point advantage over Tjia, with Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen third, one point behind. After the intensity of Round 5, van der Drift was grateful his rival was kept busier this time around: “The biggest thing was to get off the line well. I had a little bit more speed today and the car was easier to manage. When you look in your mirrors and you see the guys behind fighting, it gives you a bit of a breather.”Ragginger enjoyed the race despite not being in a position to seriously challenge for the win this time around: “I had no big chance to get in today. I had a really good start this time, but I could have done with that yesterday! Today we had almost the same speed, and Ho-Pin and Rodolfo were very quick behind me, so I had to watch them.”Tung, winner of Round 2, was delighted to put his subsequent run of back luck firmly behind him: “I had a good start, but was hit from behind into Turn 1 so lost a few positions. I was able to close the gap to Rodolfo, got a good run down the straight and planned to surprise him, which I did!”In Class B, Tjia was clearly thrilled to be back on the podium: “It feels great to be back on the top step! It’s been a while. I love this track so it feels good.” For brother Christian, who made his debut at the Fuji circuit this weekend, it was a superb result and more

than exceeded his expectations: “It’s a great feeling to be sharing the podium with my brother. It’s also vindication for my poor race yesterday!”Tan, who now leads the Class B title chase for the first time in his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia career, tempered his delight with a sobering dose of realism: “It’s only half way through the season, so there’s a long way to go. I really enjoy racing with Francis, and I pushed him all the way to the end. I think were both pushed 110% all the way today.”As the formidable field launched off the grid, van der Drift made a superb getaway from pole and Ragginger could only follow in his wake, with Avila, Tung and Baird, seventh on the grid, three abreast into Turn 1. PICC Team StarChase driver Nico Menzel, who had lost ground at the start from his second row starting position, was immediately onto the back of Baird, the 17-year-old mounting a strong challenge to the vastly experienced Porsche expert. Menzel made a move on Lap 3, briefly getting by the New Zealand driver before Baird grabbed it back. Menzel ran wide, briefly making contact with Malaysia’s Alif Hamdan. Hamdan then came under pressure from Team Yonda’s Ro Charlz Skyangel, the battle giving Menzel the chance to close back up to Baird and resume their duel.At the front of the pack, Tung had closed up to Avila and made his move on Lap 7, immediately pulling away from the Macau driver. Lap 9 saw Menzel set up another move on Baird, this time making it stick to claim a fifth place finish. Behind, Baird and Hamdan made contact, the former spinning and rejoining behind the Malaysian. In Class B, while Tjia led the pack in the opening laps, 100 PLUS Racing Team’s Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak was on a charge, getting by to take the category lead on Lap 5. However, the Thai driver retired with technical problems on Lap 6, and Tjia led Tan and brother Chia home. The final laps of the race saw Ragginger reel in van der Drift while having to fend off a challenge from Tung, with Avila never losing sight ofcontinued on page 8

continued from page 7 the top three. However, the Kamlung Racing driver proved once again unbeatable, sailing home with a 0.788 second advantage at the end of another 15 laps of sportscar racing at its very best. The weekend marked the second occasion the Porsche Carrera Cups of Asia and Japan have come together to produce a thrilling weekend of Porsche one-make racing, and all agreed it had exceeded everyone’s highest expectations. A demanding and technical track, the astonishing vistas of the majestic Mount Fuji, and an atmosphere of friendly camaraderie amongst the drivers, teams and organisers ensure that Rounds 5 and 6 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is guaranteed to be a highlight of the 2015 season. The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be back in action in August, when the 28-strong field of Asia’s finest sportscar drivers will reunite, and the battle of the overall and Class B championships will resume in earnest.

As a truly sensational reward for leading the overall and Class B Porsche Carrera Cup Asia standings mid-way through the 2015 season, Kamlung Racing’s Chris van der Drift of New Zealand and Singaporean Yuey Tan of Team Jebsen will next month head to Belgium’s fabled Spa-Francorchamps circuit to fly the flag for the region in the Porsche Carrera Cup 24 Hours of Spa 2015, which will run in support of the 24 Hours of Spa.van der Drift, who is making his Porsche racing debut this season, is looking forward to the chance to see how he measures up to drivers from the other Carrera Cups across the world: “I know Spa very well, I’ve done many races there before. It’ll be a big field so will be good to see where I fit in there - plus it means more time in the car, which is great. I’d like to thank the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia for this awesome opportunity.”Tan, who has watched all the great Spa races time and time again, the chance to actually compete there is very much a dream come true: “I’m quite lost for words. I feel a little emotional today. I want to get a result there, so I’m going to study and learn the track as much as I can on simulators. I’m going to approach this race the same way I do any race – I need to prepare, go racing and as be fast as I can.”

Van der Drift and Tan to Represent Asia’s Finest in Spa Porsche Spectacular

The race has been organised jointly by the Porsche Carrera Cups of France and Italy with guest drivers from sister series across the world, and the invitations to make up the Team Carrera Cup Asia entry were extended on Sunday to van der Drift and Tan by Manfred Braeunl, Vice President Marketing, Porsche China following Round 6, held at Japan’s Fuji International Speedway. In an exciting update, series organisers have announced that the entry, which is fully supported by Porsche China and its partners, will be run by successful Porsche Carrera Cup France team and regular Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup entrant, Sébastien Loeb Racing. Established in 2012 by the worlds’ most successful-ever rally driver, nine-time FIA World Rally Champion Loeb is no stranger to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia having joined the series in 2013 for a special invitational at the Macau Grand Prix, where he put in a brilliant drive to finish runner-up to current Porsche LMP1 Le Mans driver, Earl Bamber. Said Loeb: “Our aim is to establish the team at an international level and we are therefore pleased to work with the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia during the Spa race. On a demanding circuit, it will be an interesting experience for the team – for the engineers and mechanics – to run two new drivers: van der Drift and Tan. I had the opportunity to personally compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in Macau in 2013, and I know how high the level is. Each of these drivers leads his respective classification and therefore has ambitions at Spa, so we must meet expectations. It’s what makes things exciting.”Commented Alexandre Gibot, Motorsport Manager, Porsche China: “The 2015 Porsche Carrera Cup season has been an intense battle for points since opening race, and Chris van der Drift and Yuey Tan have fought hard every

lap of the way amongst our superb international field to lead the overall and Class B championships after Round 6, more than earning their invitations to compete at Spa. We congratulate our drivers, and thank Sébastien Loeb Racing for ensuring our Team Carrera Cup Asia will have two perfect cars for the race.”With an international grid of 55 entries expected, the Porsche Carrera Cup 24 Hours of Spa 2015 promises to be a race of epic proportions, and the Team Carrera Cup Asia will carry the hopes of their fellow drivers - and Asian motorsport - with them as they tackle one of the world’s greatest race tracks.
