Continuing with the tradition of outstanding guest speakers, this year’s keynote speaker comes to us from the Washington, D.C. area, where he serves as the Chief Diversity Officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges. He encourages audiences to elevate diversity out of its silo and into the company of talent management and strategic planning to transform organizations and, ultimately, communities. In the context of academic medicine, this means making diversity core to the overall mission of better health outcomes for all.

Dr. Marc A. Nivet provides strategic vision and programmatic leadership around diversity and inclusion. Diversity Spotlight - Summer Recap

Summer Faculty Conference: Diversity Track We closed an event packed Spring

Semester and started the summer term with a bang. The 20 participants in the 2012 Summer Faculty Development Conference’s Diversity Track embarked on a highly motivational learning experience on Culturally Responsive Teaching, with the guidance of our special guest and keynote speaker, Dr. Margery Ginsberg.

Dr. Ginsberg is an associate professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington, and has authored six books on educational motivation. The second edition of her book, Diversity and Motivation: Culturally Responsive Teaching in College, provided the premise for the Diversity Track’s focus on Global, Cultural and Professional Perspectives.

Attendees had the opportunity to review applications of her four-part

Motivational Framework - Inclusion, Attitude, Competence and Meaning - and learn how it would apply to their respective classrooms. Faculty members from theatre to the sciences worked together to incorporate the methodologies into their teaching styles.

The week’s experiences were evident during the Poster Presentations in the UCF Library’s Knowledge Commons. Six well thought out posters presented different aspects of Culturally Responsive Teaching in the company of at least 60 more posters created by other conference attendees.

The final conference deliverables will incorporate the lessons learned and applicable scenarios into online learning modules, which will share the knowledge of Culturally Responsive Teaching via our website for everyone interested in the implementation of this concept in their classrooms.

You can view Dr. Ginsberg’s keynote presentation on our website (http://www.diversity.ucf.edu/presenter_profile.asp), and you can purchase her book online from Wiley.com: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470614781.html.

As with any graduation, it is a moment to celebrate a new accomplishment and look forward to what doors may open. Twenty faculty and staff members from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) and the University of Central Florida (UCF) made up the 2012 graduating class who participated in the event that took place at the UCF Live Oak Room.

Graduates, alumni, mentors, family and friends were all in attendance as each graduate received their certificate and commemorative pin, in honor of their completion and participation during the

2011-2012 year. Several graduates took the floor and expressed their gratitude to the program, and the Diversity Initiative Directors, both Dr. King and Mr. Stickney of ERAU. Diane Maldonado, UCF, expressed herself with intense emotion and pride as she shared the day with her parents and children. Kristen Seitz, UCF, even shared a very relevant rendition of Defying Gravity

from the Broadway Musical Wicked. A year of hard work and dedication to

becoming better leaders, better professionals, culminated in a celebratory moment, full of gratitude and great food.

Many thanks were shared. One stand out thank you was given by Dr. King, in recognition of Carmen I. Afonso, whose hard work, encouragement to all the LEP members, and love of rubber ducks led Dr. King to part with her one and only. As the Executive Secretary, Ms. Afonso has for 10 years now taken the lead organizing meetings, compiling materials and acquiring special guests that have helped in the success of the LEP participants over the years.

A memorable day for everyone present, and as each graduate explores the doors the LEP has opened, we welcome a new group in 2012-2013 as they start their journey.
