DESCRIPTION

The UNITY Newsletter serves as the office's electronic newsletter that is circulated to over 5,000 students, faculty and staff each month. The newsletter is designed to inform the University community about programs and activities for African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American students. In addition, the newsletter includes information on scholarships, internships and other resources that are beneficial to the University's diverse student community.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2010

On October 6th at 7pm in Clarke Recital Hall HHM will host “What’s Your Latino I.D? with Luis Aira. Mr. Aira, a political consultant for Al Gore, John Kerry & marketing consultant for MTV’s Rock the Vote, will discuss the impact Latinos will have on the nation. From NuYoricans to Chicanos to Miami’s generation “n”, from JLO to the rock band Mars Volta, Aira will discuss the rich Latino history that encompasses numerous cultures and traditions.

Soccer Leagues (Deadline to Register: 10/12)

Namaste students! Are classes stressing you out? Take a break from academics and meditate! You will develop mental clarity and discipline that will help you focus and improve concentration (great skills when it comes to studying!) Lunthita Duthely, a follower of the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, will guide and instruct participants through the meditation. The classes are free and open to everybody. Heart Saver CPROctober 4th, 2pm

2nd Floor Herbert Wellness CenterHeart Saver CPR course teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. The cost is $15 for student members, $25 for non-student members and $35 for non-members. Lifeguards

Lifeguards (UM’s Suicide Prevention Outreach Program) will be participating in a 5k walk on Sunday October 24, 2010 to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. Join us and bring a friend! The walk will take place on UM’s Gables Campus and registration for the walk starts at 9am. You will also receive a team shirt for your participation. We hope to see you there! Middle East PiecesWednesday, October 6, 6:30pmHerbert Wellness Center Kitchen

Expand your taste buds and culinary expertise by signing up for a cooking class at the Herbert Wellness Center! Participants will prepare three different Middle Eastern dishes: spiced rockfish with spicy carrots, kibbeh with carmelized onions and pomegranate molasses drizzle, multigrain pilaf with Persian spices and sugared cardamom pears. Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International

AffairsThe Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs is pleased to announce that the 2011 PPIA Junior Summer Institute will be held at Princeton University from June 9 through July 29, 2011. The goal of the PPIA Junior Summer Institute is to prepare students for graduate study and careers in public policy and international affairs. The summer institute provides a rigorous training in policy analysis and serves as a springboard to exciting careers in public service. The brochure is available at http://wws.princeton.edu/jsi/ . Jewish Culture International Community Service ScholarshipsCriteria: Scholarships are awarded annually for professional training for careers in Jewish education, Jewish social service, the rabbinate, shehita, and milah. The recipients must commit themselves after their training to serve two to three years in a Jewishly deprived Diaspora community outside the United States, Canada, and Israel where such professional personnel are urgently needed. Recipient should also be knowledgeable in the language and culture of that country or be prepared to learn it. California Park and Recreation Scholarship

Criteria: Undergraduate students enrolled full-time in a college or university with a major in recreation/leisure services or related human services field with a major emphasis in gerontology and/or current student research in gerontology. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have work, volunteer, and/or professional involvement in the recreation/leisure services, gerontology or related field and financial need. Thirty Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans The scholarship will be awarded in 2011 on the basis of a single national competition. Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study – in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program – in the United States. Each award is for up to $25,000 in maintenance grants and up to $20,000 in tuition support for each year of graduate study supported, a total of as much as $90,000.The deadline for submission of completed applications is November 1, 2010. To be eligible, you must be: - A New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of naturalized citizens if born in this country). - Not yet 31 years old, as of the application deadline. - A college senior or holder of a bachelor’s degree. - Not beyond your second year – if already enrolled -- in the graduate degree program for which you request support.Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment. The program values a commitment to the constitution and the bill of rights. The program promotes a strong sense of community among fellows and alumni through fall conferences for fellows and numerous events for fellows and alumni held throughout the country. The top 84 applicants will be designated “finalists” and will be asked to appear for interviews in New York City or Los Angeles in mid-January of 2011. Reasonable expenses will be covered by the Fellowship Program. The 30 fellowship winners, selected from among the 84 finalists, will be announced in February of 2011. Native American Programming Board (NAPB)Are you passionate about commemorating the Native American culture? Do you want to be part of bringing new and exciting events like this semester’s Finals Fiesta and celebrate the indigenous traditions, heritage, and customs of the different Native American tribes? If so, then be part of the Native American Programming Board sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) and help plan this year’s events. Native American celebration is held during the month of November and with your help the month will be filled with entertaining and engaging programs. 6th Annual Walk 4 Myeloma at the University of Miami

The 6th Annual Walk for Myeloma raises awareness and funds for the incurable cancer, Multiple Myeloma via the Student Myeloma Advocacy Coalition and Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. Join the Lovely Ladies, Myeloma supporters, students, faculty, and staff at the walk around Lake Osceloa on Sunday, October 10, at 10 a.m. Walkers will also enjoy a lunch, live entertainment, a commemorative t-shirt and a chance to win prizes. To date the walk has raised over $22,000 for research. Check in starts at 9 a.m. at the Whitten University Center Patio. Individual walker registration is $20, registration for a group of 10 is $15 per person, and for a group of 20, registration is $10 a person. Registration the day of the event is $25.
