2. ADJECTIVE ORDER When we use more than one adjective before a noun, we put the adjective that gives our opinion before the adjective that gives factual information. Ex Hes a pleasant young man ( NOT a young pleasant man) Martin is pleasant= an opinion Martin is young= a fact 3. ADJECTIVES CHART Adjectives usually go in a particular order: Example: A lovely big pink striped Spanish silk shawl OPINION SIZE COLOR SHAPE NATIONALITY MATERIAL A lovely big pink striped Spanish silk 4. TWO ADJECTIVES TOGETHER TWO ADJECTIVES TOGETHER ARE OFTEN JOINED BY AND WHEN THERE ARE TWO COLOUR ADJECTIVES. IF THEY ARE TWO OTHER ADJECTIVES THERES NO AND. Ex: He also bought a red and gold duvet cover to go on the bed. Ex: Hes got short fair hair. 5. THREE ADJECTIVES When there are three adjectives before the noun you dont use AND. Ex: A lively warm intelligent woman When there are three adjectives alone after a link verb, we usually put a comma after the first, and AND between the last two. Ex: Shes lively, warm and intelligent 6. PRACTICE 3 Put the adjectives in the best order. 1 That (tall/young/nice) man is Martin Paxman 2 Hes got a (blue/grey) Mercedes. 3 His girlfriends got ( round/big/brown) eyes. 7. ANSWERS 1 That (tall/young/nice) man is Martin Paxman That nice tall young man is Martin Paxman 2 Hes got a (blue/grey) Mercedes. Hes got a blue and grey Mercedes. 3 His girlfriends got ( round/big/brown) eyes. His girlfriends got big round brown eyes. 8. PRACTICE 4 Go to Workbook page 31 Activities 2 & 3!
