plot (n.)

Def: sequence of related events in a story

Sentence: Every story must have a plot: a beginning, middle and end.

conflict (n)

Def: problem to be solved in a piece of literature

Sentence: In Twilight, one conflict is that people cannot find out Edward is a vampire.

Types of Conflict

achieve (v.)

Def: to get or reach (something) by working hard

Sentence: The young runner achieved her goal of competing in the Olympics.

attitude (n.)

Def: the way you think and feel about someone or something

Sentence: You should have positive attitudes about your work.

discrimination (n.)

Def: unfair treatment of a group of people because of race, ethnic group, religion or gender

Sentence: Discrimination against people is wrong.

illegal (adj.)

Def: not permitted by law

Sentence: It is illegal for 17 year olds to be outside their homes past midnight on the weekends.

politics (n.)

Def: issues of running a country

Sentence: Senators and representatives deal with politics.

Democrat (n.)

Def: a person who believes in or supports democracy

Sentence: Obama is a democrat.

Republican (n.)

Def: a person who believes in or supports a republican form of government

Sentence: McHenry County is mostly made up of republicans.

advocate

Def: (n.) a person who argues for or supports a cause or policy

(v.) to support or argue for (a cause, policy, etc.) Sentence: If you support a cause, you should

advocate for it.

banter (v.)

Def: to joke in a friendly way

Sentence: Friends banter back and forth about embarrassing experiences.

debate

Def: (n.) discussion between people in which they express different opinions about something

(v.) to discuss (something) with people whose opinions are different from your own

Sentence: Scholars debate theories that pertain to their field of study.
