WASHINGTON – La muerte de Osama bin Laden en un recinto de verano cerca de la capital de Pakistán ha cerrado un ciclo para muchos, pero también ha traído miedos de represalias por parte de miembros de al-Qaeda.
Bin Laden fue matado en un operativo realizado en su residencia la madrugada del 2 de mayo, hora de Pakistán. Helicópteros estadounidenses que llevaban a tropas del Equipo Seis de la fuerza especial conocida como Navy SEALs llegaron al lugar por sorpresa y el operativo en general duró aproximadamente 40 minutos.
El lugar está ubicado en un barrio de clase acomodada de Abbottabad, un área turística en las montañas localizada a menos de 35 millas de distancia de la capital del país, Islamabad. La residencia fortificada se encontraba a menos de una milla de la Academia Militar Kakul.
De acuerdo a fuentes oficiales, el edificio de tres pisos estaba construido como una fortaleza, con pocas ventanas y sin servicio de Internet o teléfono.
La casa contaba con muros altos con alambre de púas en la parte de arriba y una bandera ondeando en uno de los jardines.
Algunos vecinos dijeron haber visto automóviles de lujo entrando a la propiedad, pero no había ninguna indicación de que en ese lugar vivieran extranjeros.
Oficiales dijeron que bin Laden fue ultimado al final del operativo. Él recibió un disparo en la cabeza. Una mujer murió, así como uno de los hijos de bin Laden y otros dos hombres.

Las noticias de la muerte de bin Laden se filtraron aún antes del anuncio oficial y al momento de que Obama hizo su anuncio, ya se encontraba reunido un nutrido grupo de personas afuera de la Casa Blanca, celebrando este hecho. También se reunieron más personas en la Zona Cero de Nueva York.
Mientras tanto, la secretaria de estado Hillary Clinton dijo que el asesinato de bin Laden no significa que la guerra contra el terrorismo ha terminado.
“Aún cuando conmemoramos este evento, no debemos olvidar que la batalla para detener a al-Qaeda y a su sindicato de terror no terminará con la muerte de bin Laden”, dijo Clinton.
Poco después de que Obama anunciara la muerte de bin Laden, el Departamento de Estado emitió una alerta de viaje a nivel mundial, advirtiendo a ciudadanos estadounidenses que viajan o viven en el extranjero, del riesgo de violencia en contra de los americanos.
Oficiales de Aduanas y Patrulla Fronteriza han aumentado los niveles de revisión en la frontera. En Laredo, Texas los agentes aumentaron las revisiones de transeúntes, vehículos ligeros y de carga pesada y autobuses de pasajeros provenientes de México.
En Ciudad Juárez todos los vehículos fueron revisados de forma individual y las personas que entraban a pie eran cuestionadas individualmente sobre las razones para entrar a los Estados Unidos, además de que revisaban sus visas en las base s de datos, por lo que el cruce se llevó más tiempo de lo normal.
Imágenes del cuerpo, entierro no serán difundidasOficiales dijeron que existen fotografías del cuerpo de bin Laden, así como un video de su
entierro en el mar. Sin embargo, el presidente Obama ha decidido que estas imágenes no serán hechas públicas,
ya que su naturaleza gráfica pudiera incitar a la violencia y crear riesgos de seguridad para los Estados Unidos.
“No hay duda de que matamos a bin Laden”, dijo el presidente en una entrevista con CBS News que será transmitida esta semana. Citas de la entrevista fueron leídas por el vocero de la presidencia Jay Carney.
“No creemos que una imagen por si misma va a causar una diferencia”, dijo el presidente de aquellos que no creen que bin Laden esté muerto.
“Va a haber algunas personas que lo niegan. El hecho es que ustedes no verán a bin Laden caminando por la tierra de nuevo”, dijo el presidente.
Pakistán reacciona al operativoEl 3 de mayo el gobierno de Pakistán criticó formalmente el operativo, diciendo que había
sido “una acción unilateral no autorizada”. Las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Pakistán se encontraban fracturadas antes del operativo, por lo que estas pueden empeorar.
Oficiales paquistaníes han dicho que no sabían la ubicación de bin Laden. Y el que no hayan encontrado al terrorista en Abbottabad indica que al gobierno se le escapó la situación, no que lo hubieran estado encubierto.
Durante una visita a París, el primer ministro de Paquistán Yosuf Raza Gilani dijo que su
país tenía una excelente cooperación con los Estados Unidos y compartía inteligencia con otros países para pelear contra el terrorismo. Mencionó que “si hemos fallado significa que todos fallaron” y habló de que se debería ordenar una investigación del asunto.
Conforme pasan los días, más oficiales de inteligencia en todo el mundo están cuestionando cómo es que nadie dentro de la comunidad de inteligencia de Pakistán sabía que bin Laden estaba escondido a simple vista tan cerca de la capital y casi junto a una academia militar.
Algunos congresistas estadounidenses han dicho que los Estados Unidos deben reconsiderar los billones de dólares en ayuda que envían a Pakistán si se descubre que le gobierno sabía dónde se encontraba bin Laden.
Sin embargo, otros creen que la situación debe evaluarse con cautela antes de tomar una decisión, ya que Pakistán tiene armas nucleares y los Estados Unidos necesitan su apoyo para retirarse de Afganistán.
Años de trabajo de inteligencia rinden frutoEn base a declaraciones de arrestados desde los ataques del 11 de septiembre, oficiales
pudieron saber que bin Laden confiaba en un mensajero en particular para enviar sus mensajes, y creían que vivía con bin Laden. EL mensajero fue identificado como Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, pero este no era su verdadero nombre.
En 2004, un miembro de al-Qaeda de alto rango, Hasan Ghul, fue capturado en Irak. Este hombre dijo a la CIA que al-Kuwaiti era una persona clave para la organización y estaba en contacto constante con Faraj al-Libi, el tercer líder de al-Qaeda.
Al-Libi fue capturado en mayo de 2005. Bajo interrogación, aceptó que había recibido el aviso que era el tercero en importancia en la organización de manos de un mensajero, pero identificó al hombre con otro nombre y negó conocer a al-Kuwaiti.
Le llevó a la CIA varios años el saber el verdadero nombre del mensajero: Sheikh Abu Ahmed, un paquistaní nacido en Kuwait.
El rastrearlo fue difícil, ya que bin Laden insistía que nadie usara teléfonos o computadoras cuando se encontraban cerca de él. Un detenido también dijo que el mensajero había muerto después de un ataque de Estados Unidos en Afganistán.
Sin embargo, Ahmed tuvo una conversación telefónica con una persona bajo vigilancia de autoridades de inteligencia estadounidenses a mediados de 2010, lo que permitió que se descubriera su paradero. A partir de entonces oficiales de inteligencia mantuvieron la vigilancia de Ahmed.
En agosto de 2010 Ahmed visitó un complejo habitacional en Abbottabad, llevando a las autoridades a esta zona. 40 largos minutosPara llevar a cabo el operativo Obama escogió a dos docenas de miembros del equipo táctico
Team Six de los Navy SEALs.Las tropas salieron de Jalalabad en el este de Afganistán la madrugada del 2 de mayo en
un par de helicópteros, usando tecnología avanzada para no ser detectados por los radares paquistaníes.
Una vez en la zona, los helicópteros llegaron a la residencia, desembarcando a las tropas dentro de la propiedad.
Poco después de que las tropas desembarcaran, uno de los helicópteros se vino abajo y tuvo que ser destruido. Las autoridades no han identificado los motivos de este desplome. Nadie resultó herido y el plan continuó adelante sin ningún cambio.
Mientras que los oficiales llevaban a cabo la operación, oficiales de la CIA y de la Casa Blanca se encontraban monitoreando la situación de forma simultánea, recibiendo imágenes vía satélite.

De acuerdo a oficiales estadounidenses, las fuerzas sabían que la familia bin-Laden se encontraba en el segundo y tercer piso de uno de los edificios en la propiedad. Las tropas aseguraron primero el resto de la residencia para luego llegar al escondite de bin Laden.
Ahí se registró un intercambio de fuego, donde murieron Ahmed y su hermano. Las tropas entonces ultimaron a bin Laden con una bala que le entró arriba del ojo izquierdo. Oficiales dijeron que bin Laden no estaba armado y no ofreció resistencia. La esposa de bin Laden sobrevivió al operativo con una herida de bala en la pantorrilla.
El código asignado a bin Laden durante el operativo fue “Jerónimo”. Para confirmar la muerte de su objetivo, uno de los oficiales dijo que “Jerónimo” había sido eliminado.
Entonces las tropas procedieron a realizar una búsqueda de la propiedad y se llevaron documentos, almacenajes externos de computadora y discos compactos que pueden ser útiles. Todo el operativo duró alrededor de 40 minutos.
Una vez que las fuerzas estadounidenses se retiraron, los que quedaron en la residencia fueron arrestados por autoridades paquistaníes, quienes llegaron al lugar de inmediato.
Un oficial paquistaní, quien habló de forma anónima, dijo que una de las hijas de bin Laden está bajo custodia de las autoridades. La joven dijo a los oficiales que vio cuando los agentes estadounidenses dispararon contra su padre.
En total alrededor de 12 personas que se encontraban en el lugar durante el operativo están ahora bajo custodia de las autoridades paquistaníes, incluyendo seis o siete niños y una mujer no identificada quien está herida y recibe tratamiento en un hospital.

También se usaron otras formas de identificación para confirmar su identidad. Fue positivamente identificado por miembros del escuadrón de ataque y se realizaron pruebas genéticas.
El cuerpo de bin Laden fue llevado al portaaviones USS Carl Vinson, donde el cuerpo fue lavado y colocado en una sábana blanca, de acuerdo a los rituales islámicos, que requieren que
los cuerpos se entierren dentro de 24 horas de la muerte de la persona.Su cuerpo fue colocado en una “bolsa con pesas”, que fue depositada en el mar.Oficiales estadounidenses dijeron que no habían podido encontrar un país dispuesto a
aceptar los restos mortales de bin-Laden, por lo que se había tomado la decisión de enterrarlo en el mar.
Otra razón que se ha mencionado para esta acción es que de esta manera los seguidores de este hombre que lo consideran un hombre santo no van a tener un lugar donde rendirle tributo.
Cambios en la informaciónLos miembros del escuadrón de ataque regresaron a Estados Unidos el 3 de marzo, donde
se encontraban dando su declaración del operativo en la base Andrews de la Fuerza Aérea, localizada afuera de Washington, D.C.
Estas declaraciones han llevado a cambios en la información proporcionada justo después del operativo.
Uno de los cambios es que en un principio se dijo que bin Laden había usado a una de sus esposas como escudo humano, pero después de esta entrevista con los agentes en el lugar de los hechos, la información cambió para reflejar que la esposa había interferido con la acción de los soldados y había sido herida de bala en una pantorrilla.
Originalmente se dijo que bin Laden estaba armado y se mencionó que había disparado contra las tropas, sin embargo, la información cambió para revelar que el terrorista se encontraba sin armas. Esto ha hecho que algunas personas cuestionen la razón para haberlo matado, si no estaba armado.
El vocero Carney dijo que el equipo SEAL tenía instrucciones de matarlo, a menos que ofreciera rendirse, una oferta que tenían que aceptar.

Se cree que Arshad es el mensajero que llevó a los americanos al escondite de bin Laden.Mientras que las autoridades o saben por cuánto tiempo vivió bin Laden en este lugar, hay
especulaciones que pudo haber estado ahí por hasta seis años.Ahora que bin Laden está muerto, oficiales estadounidenses esperan que aparezca un video

WASHINGTON – The death of Osama bin Laden in a compound located in a summer resort near Pakistan’s capital has brought closure to many, but also fears of retaliation by al Qaeda members.
Bin Laden was killed in a raid to his compound early May 2, Pakistan time. U.S. helicopters carrying troops from Navy SEAL Team Six, a top counterterrorism unit, took the compound by surprise and were in and out in less than 40 minutes.
The compound was located in an upscale neighborhood of Abbottabad, a mountainside resort located less than 35 miles from the national capital of Islamabad. The fortified residence was located less than a mile from the Kakul Military Academy.
According to official sources, the three-story building was constructed like a fortress, with a few windows and no internet or telephone service.
The home featured high, barbed-wire topped walls and a flag flying from a pole in the garden.
Some neighbors said they had seen luxury cars entering the compound, but there was no indication that foreigners were living there.
Officials said bin Laden was killed toward the end of the raid. He was shot in the head by SEAL troops. A woman was killed, as well as one of bin Laden’s sons and two other males.
President Barack Obama announced the death of bin Laden, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, during a rare late-night TV broadcast May 1.
“Justice has been done,” President Obama said during his TV announcement from the White House. He also said the U.S. government is not in war against Islam.
“I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity,” the president said.
Obama also mentioned that the raid was conducted by U.S. forces only, without the knowledge or help from the Pakistani government. He said Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was notified after the raid of what had happened.
News of bin Laden’s death leaked out before the official announcement and by the time Obama appeared before the TV cameras, a considerable amount of people had gathered outside the White House to celebrate the death of bin Laden. People also gathered at Ground Zero in New York.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that the killing of bin Laden does not mean the war against terrorism is over.
“Even as we mark this milestone, we should not forget that the battle to stop al-Qaida and its syndicate of terror will not end with the death of bin Laden,” Clinton said.
Shortly after Obama announced bin Laden’s death, the State Department issued a worldwide travel alert, warning U.S. citizens traveling or living overseas of the risk of violence against Americans.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials have increased security throughout the border. In Laredo, Texas, agents have increased the revisions of pedestrians, light vehicles, trucks and passenger buses arriving from Mexico.
In Ciudad Juarez all vehicles were checked one
by one and pedestrians were questioned about their reason to enter the U.S. and their visas were checked against the databases, something that made the wait even longer than usual.
Images of body, burial won’t be releasedOfficials said photos were taken of bin Laden’s
body and there is video of his burial at sea. However, President Obama decided the photos won’t be released, as their graphic nature could incite violence and create security risks for the United States.
“There’s no doubt we killed Osama bin Laden,” the president said in a CBS News interview that will be broadcast later on this week. Quotes from the interview were read by Presidential spokesman Jay Carney.
“We don’t think that a photograph in and of itself is going to make any difference”, the president said of those who don’t believe bin Laden is dead.
“There are going to be some folks who deny it. The fact of the matter is you won’t see bin Laden walking on this earth again,” the president said.
Pakistan reacts to raidOn May 3, Pakistan formally criticized the
raid, saying it was an “unauthorized unilateral action.” Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Pakistan have been strained and can only get worse.
Pakistani officials have said they didn’t know where bin Laden was located. And the fact that they didn’t find him in Abbottabad points to government oversight, not intentional protection.
During a visit to Paris, Pakistani Prime Minister Yosuf Raza Gilani said his country had an excellent cooperation with the United States and shared intelligence with other countries to fight against terrorism. He said that “if we have failed, it means everybody failed,” and that an investigation should be ordered.
More and more intelligence officials throughout the world are questioning how nobody within the intelligence community in Pakistan detected bin Laden’s hideout so close to the country’s capital and almost next door to a military academy.
Some U.S. congressmen have said the U.S. should reconsider cutting billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan if it is discovered that the government knew where bin Laden was located. Others, however, think the situation must be evaluated before making a decision, as Pakistan has nuclear arms, and the U.S. needs it support to withdraw from Afghanistan.
Years of intelligence pay offBased on statements given by detainees since
the 9/11 attacks, officials were able to know that bin Laden trusted one courier in particular to send his messages out to the world, and they believed the courier was living with bin Laden. The courier was identified as Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, but that was not his real name.
In 2004, a top al-Qaida operative, Hassan Ghul, was captured in Iraq. He told the CIA that al-Kuwaiti was a key person for the organization and was close to Faraj al-Libi, the third highest leader in al-Qaida.
Al-Libi was captured in May 2005. Under interrogation he accepted that he had received notice that he had been named the third-highest ranking leader in the organization from a courier, but gave a different name for the courier and denied knowing al-Kuwaiti.
It took the CIA several years to learn the courier’s real name: Sheikh Abu Ahmed, a
Pakistani man who was born in Kuwait.Tracking him down was difficult, as bin Laden
insisted nobody used phones or computers near him. A detainee also said the courier was dead after a U.S. attack in Afghanistan.
However, Ahmed had a telephone conversation with someone being monitored by U.S. intelligence in mid-2010 and his whereabouts were discovered. From there intelligence officials kept watch over Ahmed.
In August 2010 Ahmed visited a compound in Abbottabad, leading authorities to the area. While authorities had known about the property for years, the place lacked security guards, something they thought they would find near bin-Laden.
Authorities said Ahmed lived at the compound with his family, his brother and his brother’s family, something suspicious, as the brothers didn’t have the means to live in a fortified $1 million home.
By mid-February, officials were convinced a high-ranking target was hidden in that place and, according to the AP, president Obama wanted to take action.
The site presented some difficulties, as it was located in a residential neighborhood in a sovereign country. Also, if bin-Laden was not in the compound and an airstrike was ordered, this could bring terrible diplomatic consequences.
Chief counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said the information was obtained little by little and there was no smoking gun that helped determine bin Laden was there.
“The president had to evaluate the strength of that information, and then made what I believe was one of the most gutsiest calls of any president in recent memory,” Brennan said.

early May 2 in a pair of helicopters, using sophisticated technology to evade Pakistan’s radar systems.
Once in the area, the helicopters arrived at the compound, dropping off the troops behind the walls.
Shortly after the troops landed one of the helicopters came crashing down and had to be destroyed. Authorities still haven’t released any official information about this incident. No troops were injured and the plan continued without change.

LOS ÁNGELES – Un soldado hispano, cuyos padres son originarios de México, fue parte del equipo de Operaciones Especiales en Mar, Tierra y Aire de la Marina estadounidense (SEALs) que atacó el escondite de Osama bin Laden y eliminó al autor intelectual de los atentados terroristas del 11 de septiembre.
Mientras que las autoridades militares estadounidenses tienen la política de no identificar a soldados que participan en operativos, y oficialmente el equipo de los Navy SEALs es tan secreto que no existe de forma oficial, un familiar del soldado dio la información a los medios de comunicación y reveló la identidad del soldado.

El hombre, un operador de maquinaria en Los Ángeles, dijo que los soldados habían llegado con una bandera estadounidense doblada en sus manos.
“Los soldados nos traían una bandera de Estados Unidos y cuando vieron que empezábamos a llorar nos aclararon que era un reconocimiento y un honor el traernos la bandera porque nuestro hijo había cumplido
una gran misión por la nación”, dijo el hombre.Mientras que los miembros del equipo SEALs no
pueden revelar a sus familias sus proyectos y no comparten detalles de su trabajo, Mejía dijo que su hijo había hablado con él por teléfono.

LOS ANGELES – A Hispanic solider whose parents are from Mexico was part of the SEALs team that stormed Osama bin Laden’s hideout and killed the mastermind of the 9-11 attacks.
While the U.S. military has the policy of not identifying soldiers who participate in operations, and officially the Navy SEALs team is so secretive that does not exist officially, a relative of the soldier gave the information to the media, revealing the soldier’s identity.
Martin Mejia, the soldier’s father, called one of the top-rated Spanish-language radio shows in Los Angeles, ‘El Mandril’ to talk about his son, the fear they had when they saw soldiers approaching their home and how proud they are
of the soldier’s actions.“A few hours ago my family was shaken when they saw
about ten military officers arriving at our home, and when they knocked on the door the whole family was shaken and started crying because they believed they had bad news,” Mejia said the morning of May 2, a few hours after the announcement of bin Laden’s death.
The man, who works as a machine operator in Los Angeles, said the soldiers arrived with a folded American flag on their hands.
“The soldiers brought an American flag and when they saw we were crying they told us that bringing the flag was an honor and a recognition, because our son had participated in a great mission on behalf of our country,” the man said.
While Navy SEALs members cannot reveal to relatives
what their assignments are and are very secretive about their work, Mejia said that he had received a phone call from his son.
“He told me that a helicopter had gone down during the operation,” the man said. “He told me he had received congratulations from President Barack Obama and that the president wants to meet with the whole group as soon as possible.”
The soldier, identified by his father as Ruben Mejia, was born in the United States and his parents are from the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Ruben has been in the armed forces for six years.
According to his father, Ruben was slightly injured during the operation and was able to see bin Laden’s body after it was taken out of the hideout.

According to officials, U.S. forces knew bin Laden’s family was probably located on the second and third floor of one of the buildings on the property.
Troops secured first the rest of the property, then proceeded to where bin Laden was hiding.
There a firefight ensued. Officials said Ahmed and his brother were killed. Then SEALs killed bin Laden with a bullet just above his left eye. U.S. authorities said bin Laden was unarmed and didn’t fight back. Bin Laden’s wife survived with a gunshot wound to the calf.
The code name assigned to bin Laden for this operation was “Geronimo”. One of the soldiers then confirmed the death of bin Laden by stating that “Geronimo” had been killed in action.
Then the troops conducted a search of the compound and left with documents, hard drives and DVDs that could be useful according to a U.S. official. The entire operation took about 40 minutes.
Once the U.S. forces retreated, those left behind at the compound were turned over to Pakistani officials who quickly took over control of the site.
A Pakistani official who spoke on condition of anonymity said one of bin Laden’s daughters is in Pakistani custody. She told officials she saw when U.S. forces shot her father.
In total about 12 people who were at the compound are now in Pakistani custody, including six or seven children and a women who is wounded and is receiving treatment at a hospital.
Positive identificationBin Laden was allegedly identified by one of the women
found at the compound. Also, other forms of identification were used to determine his identity. He was identified by members of the U.S. raid squad and that DNA tests were conducted to confirm his identity.
Bin Laden’s body was then taken to the USS Carl Vinson, where the body was washed and placed in a white sheet,
according to Islam rituals, that require disposal of a body within 24 hours of death.
His body was then placed inside a “weighted bag”, which was then released at sea.
U.S. officials said they couldn’t find a country willing to accept the remains and that’s why bin Laden was buried at sea.
Another reason that has come up is that this way those who see him as a holy man don’t have a place to pay tribute to bin Laden.
Revisions in informationThe SEALs were back in U.S. soil May 3, at Andrews Air
Force Base outside Washington, for debriefing on the raid. This debriefing has lead to changes in the information that was first provided right after the raid took place.
One of the changes is that in the beginning it was said that bin Laden had used one of his wives as a human shield, but after debriefing the troops on the ground, the information was changed to reflect that the wife had interfered with the action of the soldiers and was shot in the calf.
Because originally it was said that bin Laden was armed and even firing, then the information was revised to state that bin Laden was unarmed, the reason for his death has been questioned by some.
Spokesman Carney said the SEAL team had instructions to kill him unless he offered to surrender, an offer they had to accept.
“Consistent with the laws of war, bin Laden’s surrender would have been accepted if feasible,” Carney said.
At the time of his death, bin Laden had about 500 euros sewn into his clothes, and had phone numbers with him. Officials interpret this as a possible indication that the terrorist had plans to flee his compound on short notice.
Details about the hideoutProperty records obtained by the Associated Press show that
the land where bin-Laden’s compound was built was owned by Mohammed Arshad. The information showed he bought adjoining plots of land in four different stages between 2004 and 2005.
A doctor who sold a plot of land to Arshad in 2005 told the AP that the buyer was a man who spoke with an accent that sounded like he was from Waziristan, a tribal region near Afghanistan that is home to al-Qaida operatives.
The doctor saw Arshad several times after the purchase transaction and in one of those occasions Arshad told him “your land is now very costly,” meaning very valuable. Arshad told the doctor he was purchasing land for his uncle.
Arshad is suspected to be the courier who led the Americans to bin Laden.
While authorities don’t know for how long bin Laden was at the compound, some believe he was living there for up to six years.
Now that bin Laden is dead, U.S. officials expect a posthumous video to be shown in the next few days. The video was allegedly made to be revealed in case of bin Laden’s death and includes specific instructions to avenge his death.

Obama talks about immigration reform with Hispanic congressmen

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama met with members of the all-Democratic Congressional Hispanic Caucus to talk about an immigration reform, but when the session ended no breakthrough agreements had been reached.
Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois said after the meeting, held May 3, that the president agreed that it makes no sense to deport young people who had been raised in the United States after their parents had brought them here illegally. However, Gutierrez said he doesn’t know how the president is going to act about this.
Two presidential advisors, Melody Barnes and Cecilia Muñoz, told reporters before the meeting that the president was not going to support any proposals that suggest an executive action to declare certain segments of the immigrant community exempt from deportation.
Gonzalez said that “the president stressed absolutely that the real fix is going to have to be legislative.”
Meanwhile Muñoz said that “what we need are partners in Congress that will help us promote legislation to attain the goal.”
This is the third meeting that the president has had this year with different groups to seek support for an immigration reform.
The first meeting took place in early April with a group of religious and union leaders, activists, businessmen, current and former government officials and chiefs of police, to whom he renewed his commitment to keep working to make Congress pass a change in immigration laws.
The second meeting, held in late April, gathered a group of “influential Hispanics,” among them actors, TV personalities and journalists. In this meeting President Obama asked them for their support to convince Congress to pass an immigration reform.

Esta semana contestaré una pregunta que recibí de uno de los lectores.
“Hace muchos años mi hermano, que es ciudadano estadounidense, envió una petición a nombre mío para que yo pudiera recibir beneficios de inmigración en los Estados Unidos. Ya ha pasado mucho tiempo y no sé qué pasó con esa petición.”En muchos casos algunos familiares, en
este caso hermanos y hermanas de ciudadanos estadounidenses, pueden ser los beneficiarios de una petición de visa de inmigrante debidamente enviada. Cuando un ciudadano estadounidense hace una petición para un hermano o hermana para recibir beneficios de inmigración, este es un proceso de dos fases.
El Servicio de los Estados Unidos de Ciudadanía e Inmigración (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) aprueba la petición y entonces usted tiene que esperar para que haya una visa disponible.
Bajo las leyes actuales de inmigración de los Estados Unidos, un máximo de 226 mil personas pueden recibir visa legalmente para venir a los Estados Unidos como residentes permanentes.
Con un número limitado de visas disponibles, y una gran demanda para esas visas, se puede llevar muchos años para que un hermano o hermana reciba la visa.
Actualmente hay visas disponibles para personas que sometieron peticiones para hermanos y hermanas el 1 de enero de 2000 o antes. Pero viendo que algunos países, como México, tienen muchas personas que quieren entrar a los Estados Unidos, se está trabajando en disponibilidad de visas para personas que pidieron a hermanas o hermanos el 22 de enero de 1996 o antes.
Por lo tanto, si su hermano o hermana hicieron una petición para usted antes del 22 de enero de 1996 y su país de origen es México, usted puede
recibir una visa par entrar a los Estados Unidos.Sabemos que muchas personas están en los
Estados Unidos sin documentos y son beneficiarios de peticiones enviadas hace muchos años. En esos casos existe una provisión en la ley, llamada 245(i), en la que si usted ha estado en los Estados Unidos desde antes del 30 de diciembre de 2000 y la petición fue sometida antes del 30 de abril de 2001, usted puede pagar una multa de mil dólares y ajustar su estatus mientras está en los Estados Unidos. Por lo tanto, usted no tiene que irse de los Estados Unidos cuando hay una visa disponible.
Uno de los beneficios que un hermano o hermana recibe cuando hay una visa disponible es que su esposo o esposa también puede beneficiarse de la visa. Esto se llama un beneficiario derivado. También los hijos de su hermano, que sean menores de 21 años de edad y estén solteros pueden recibir una visa para entrar a los Estados Unidos.
Si sus sobrinos o sobrinas tienen más de 21 años o están casados no pueden recibir el beneficio derivado.
Cuando digo que tienen la disponibilidad para recibir una visa, con esa visa en el momento en que entran a los Estados Unidos son residentes permanentes y reciben su tarjeta de residencia.
En muchos casos la persona que envió la petición original se cambia de dirección o pierde los documentos. En estos casos la pregunta se convierte en ¿qué puedo hacer?
En estos casos, yo puedo escribir una carta a nombre suyo al Servicio de Inmigración, solicitando una copia del archivo y entonces el Servicio de Inmigración me va a enviar una copia de los documentos mostrando las fechas de prioridad de su caso, cuando fue enviada la petición y así podemos obtener la información para saber qué ha pasado con su caso. En muchas situaciones terminamos encontrando los números de caso apropiados y la fecha de prioridad correcta, y por lo tanto en algunas ocasiones podemos, o usted puede, actuar si la información muestra que su fecha está vigente, o por lo menos sabe o tiene una idea de cuánto
tiempo más va a esperar.Lo que usted no quiere que suceda es que
cuando la visa esté disponible, el Centro Nacional de Visas lo trate de contactar, pero no lo contactan porque se cambió o hay un problema, o ellos no tienen su dirección correcta. Después de un año usted pierde la disponibilidad de ese beneficio y ellos le podrán negar su caso en muchas ocasiones en base a esta situación.
Por lo tanto, es muy importante que usted conozca su fecha de prioridad, cuándo espera recibir información del Centro Nacional de Visas y mantener informado al Centro Nacional de Visas de su dirección actual.

This week I will answer the question that one of our readers sent to my office.
“Many years ago my U.S. citizen brother filed immigration paperwork on my behalf so I can receive immigration benefits in the U.S. A long time has passed and I don’t know what ever happened with that paperwork.”In many circumstances family members, meaning brothers
and sisters of U.S. citizens, can be the beneficiary of a properly filed immigrant visa petition. When a U.S. citizen petitions for a brother or sister to receive immigration benefits, it is always a two-step process.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves the petition, then you have to wait for visa availability.
Under the current United States Immigration laws a maximum of 226,000 people can legally receive visas to come to the United States as permanent residents.
With a limited number of visas available, and a high demand for visas, it can take many years for a brother or sister to receive a visa. Currently there are visas available for people who filed petitions for brothers and sisters on Jan. 1, 2000 or before. But seeing how some countries, like Mexico, there are so many people that want to enter the United States, they are currently working on visa availability for people who filed for brothers or sisters on Jan. 22, 1996.
Therefore, if your brother or sister petitioned for you before Jan. 22, 1996 and your home country is Mexico, you can receive a visa to enter the United States.
We know many people are in the United States undocumented who are the beneficiaries of petitions filed many years ago. In that circumstance there is a provision in the law, called 245(i) where if you have been in the United States before December 30, 2000 and the petition was filed before April 30, 2001, you can pay a fine of $1,000 and adjust your status while still in the United States. Therefore, you do not have to leave the United States when a visa becomes available.
One of the benefits that a brother or sister receives is when a visa becomes available their spouse also can take advantage of the visa. This is called a derivative beneficiary. Also, all of your brother’s children who are unmarried and under the age of 21 also can receive a visa to enter the United States.
If your nephews or nieces are over the age of 21 or get married they cannot receive derivative beneficiary.
When I say they have the ability to receive a visa, with that visa when they enter the United States they are permanent residents of the United States and receive a green card.
In many circumstances, the petitioner who filed the original paperwork, who is the original petitioner, would have moved or lost the paperwork. And the question becomes what can I do?
In those circumstance I can write the Immigration Service a letter on your behalf requesting a copy of the file and then the Immigration Service will send me a copy of the paperwork showing the priority dates of your case, when your case was filed,
and we can track down the information to find out specifically what happened to it. In many circumstances what we end up finding out is the proper case numbers and proper priority dates or the correct priority dates, and therefore we can or you can sometimes act upon that information if it is current, or at least you know or have a very good idea of how much longer is going to be.
Because what you don’t want to happen is a visa becomes available, the National Visa Center tries to contact you, you are not contacted because you have moved or there is a problem, they don’t have your correct address, and then, after one year, you lose the availability of that benefit and they will deny your case in many instances based on that. Therefore it’s important you know when your priority date is, when to expect information from the National Visa Center and to keep the National Visa Center advised of your most current address.

SABINAS – Cinco mineros han muerto y nueve más se cree fallecieron en una explosión de una mina de carbón en Sabinas, Coahuila.
La explosión sucedió el 3 de mayo en un pozo de carbón que había estado operando por 20 días sin autorización.
Catorce mineros estaban trabajando a una profundidad de 60 metros cuando se dio la explosión y los mineros quedaron atrapados.
Cinco fallecieron y sus cuerpos han sido recuperados. Un menor de edad que trabajaba fuera de la mina resultó gravemente herido.
El menor, de 15 años de edad, fue trasladado a un hospital de Monterrey donde se le amputaron ambos brazos. Nueve mineros permanecen atrapados.
El secretario de Trabajo Javier Lozano Alarcón dijo en una entrevista que existen “nulas
posibilidades” de encontrar a los mineros con vida.

oficial y que los empleados que laboraban en el lugar no estaban dados de alta en el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro

SABINAS – Five miners have been killed and nine more are presumed dead after an explosion in a coal mine in Sabinas, Coahuila.
The explosion took place May 3 in a coal well that had been operating for 20 days without authorization.
Fourteen miners were working at a depth of 60 meters when the explosion occurred and they were trapped. Five miners were killed by the blast and a minor who was working outside the mine was severely injured. The 15 year-old male was taken to a Monterrey hospital where both his arms had to be amputated. Nine miners remain trapped.
Labor Secretary Javier
Lozano Alarcon said in an interview that there are “no possibilities” of finding the trapped miners alive.
He said the coal well didn’t have an official registry and that the miners hadn’t been registered with the Mexican
Institute of Social Security as the law requires.
The first rescue workers entered the mine 12 hours after the explosion. They couldn’t do it sooner because they had to wait until gases in the air evaporated to enter.

AURORA – Para apoyar a los propietarios de restaurantes en Aurora, La Cámara Hispana de Comercio de Aurora (AHCC) ha programado un taller gratuito de información en el que se les brindarán las herramientas para hacer que su negocio tenga más éxito.
Norma Vázquez, presidenta de la cámara, dijo que este taller, a realizarse en español, está dirigido a restauranteros para darles herramientas en las áreas de mercadotecnia, servicio al cliente, productos y servicios entre otras, que les permitirán mejorar su negocio.
“Lo que queremos hacer es ayudarles a mejorar lo que están haciendo ahora, al traer a un presentador que les diga cómo mejorar su negocio para estar al nivel de su competencia o sobrepasar a sus
competidores” dijo Vázquez.Ella mencionó que existe un gran
segmento de la población hispana que son dueños de negocios y al realizar este tipo de talleres se les está brindando un servicio para mejorar su empresa.
El taller se realizará en español y está dirigido particularmente a los dueños de negocios ya establecidos, pero está abierto a las personas interesadas en abrir su propio restaurante.
“Esperamos que sea un taller trimestral, pero depende de cuántas personas asistan”, dijo.
La primera sesión de este taller gratuito se realizará el 18 de mayo a las 6 p.m.

AURORA – The Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is providing a free workshop to area restaurateurs to provide them with information and tools to help them make their businesses more successful.
AHCC President Norma Vazquez said this workshop, to be held in Spanish, is geared to restaurateurs to provide them with tools in the areas of marketing, customer service, products and service among others, to help them grow their business.
“What we want to do is help them enhance what they are doing now, by bringing a facilitator to tell them how to better their business, and how to be on par with their competitors or be better than
them,” she said.Vazquez said there is a large segment of
the population that are Hispanic business owners and by conducting these workshops the chamber is providing them with a service to help their companies grow.
The workshop will be in Spanish and is geared particularly to established restaurant owners, but it’s also open to people who are thinking about opening a restaurant.
“We are hoping it will be a quarterly workshop, but it depends on how many individuals come,” she said.
The first session of the free workshop will be held at 6 p.m. May 18.

MEXICO CITY – Entertainer Ninel Conde has come out to defend herself of accusations that she had posted a tweet giving her condolences to the U.S. people for the death of “Barack Osama,” after Osama bin Laden was killed May 1.
The Twitter message read “I regret the death of President Barack Osama. All my condolences to the United States.”
The message spread like wildfire but the singer denies ever writing it.
“There is great confusion about some alleged comments I wrote in my official and verified Twitter account. I haven’t pronounced myself about the death of Osama bin Laden,” she told the media, visibly upset by the whole
situation. “Any information or comment linking me to this topic is false and doesn’t come from me.”
She issued a statement saying a screenshot of her official Twitter page had been used to paste the message on top of it, to make it look credible.
“This is nothing more than a rumor that has gone beyond the social media and has reached the mass media outlets,” she said.
Conde was severely criticized several years ago, when after the tsunami that affected Indonesia she wrote “the surimi was awful.”

El mensaje de Twitter decía “Lamento la muerte del presidente Barack Osama, todas mis condolencias a Estados Unidos”.
El mensaje comenzó a circular por el internet pero la cantante niega haberlo escrito.
“Hay una gran confusión sobre unas supuestas declaraciones que escribí en mi
cuenta oficial y verificada de Twitter. Yo no he opinado al respecto de la muerte de Osama bin Laden”, dijo la artista, visiblemente molesta por la situación. “Cualquier información o comentario que me relacione con este tema es falso y no proviene de mi persona”.
Ella emitió un comunicado diciendo que una imagen de su sitio oficial de Twitter fue usada para montar el mensaje en cuestión.
“Esto no pasa de ser un rumor que ha sobrepasado las redes sociales y ha llegado a diferentes medios de comunicación”, dijo.
Conde fue criticada duramente hace varios años, cuando después del tsunami que arrasó Indonesia escribió el mensaje “qué feo lo del surimi”, demostrando su falta de conocimientos sobre asuntos de actualidad.

SAN JUAN – Un empresario puertorriqueño, que por años ha dicho ser el verdadero padre de Luis Miguel, ha dicho que el cantante será obligado por la justicia puertorriqueña a cambiar su apellido en su acta de nacimiento, y entonces va a tener que hacer lo mismo con las actas de nacimiento de sus hijos.
En una entrevista con el programa Primer Impacto de Univisión, José Juan Arias dijo que “Luis Miguel no contradijo la demanda de paternidad que se le interpuso y estamos esperando al sentencia, que va a ser que se cambie el apellido, que se ponga el mío”.
El hombre dijo que las autoridades puertorriqueñas van a obligar a Luis Miguel a cambiar sus apellidos legales de Gallego Basteri a Arias Basteri.
Arias continuó diciendo que después de hacer este cambio, el cantante tendrá que hacer lo mismo con las actas de nacimiento de sus hijos.
“Una vez que den las sentencia se le cambiará el apellido en Puerto Rico y él (Luis Miguel) deberá hacer las gestiones para cambiar las actas de nacimiento de los muchachos y de la nieta, Michelle”, comentó.
El hombre dijo estar preocupado por la salud del cantante, ya que su supuesto abuelo falleció de problemas cardiacos. También dijo que no era cierto que Araceli Arámbula no estuviera recibiendo dinero para la manutención de los niños.

SAN JUAN – A Puerto Rican businessman who for years has claimed to be Luis Miguel’s real father, has said the singer will be forced by Puerto Rican authorities to change his last name in his birth certificate, and then will have to do the same with his children’s birth certificates.
In an interview with Primer Impacto in Univision Jose Juan Arias said that “Luis Miguel didn’t fight the paternity suit that was filed and we are waiting for the sentence, which will be (an order) for him to change his last name, to use mine.”
The man said Puerto Rican authorities then will force Luis Miguel to change his legal last names from Gallego Basteri to Arias Basteri.
Arias went on to say that after this change is made, he will have to do the same with his children’s birth certificates.“Once he gets the sentence he will get his last name changed in Puerto Rico, and he must make the changes in the boys’ birth
certificates and in the granddaughter, Michelle.”The man said he is worried about Luis Miguel’s health as his alleged grandfather died of heart disease. He also mentioned that
it’s not true that Araceli Arambula doesn’t get child support from the singer.
