CD. DE MÉXICO – El subsecretario de Seguridad Nacional de los Estados Unidos, John Morton, dijo que el gobierno de los estados Unidos va a investigar la muerte de Anastasio Hernández, un inmigrante indocumentado de México quien murió después de haber sido golpeado brutalmente por agentes de la Pa-trulla Fronteriza.
Hernández fue golpeado severamente y recibió choques eléctricos la noche del 28 de mayo, cuando las autoridades dijeron que se había resistido a ser de-portado en la garita de San Ysidro, cerca de Tijuana.
Familiares dijeron que Hernández, de 42 años de edad, había vivido en los Es-tados Unidos de forma ilegal por 21 años y que había sido deportado días antes, ya que durante un accidente de tránsito las autoridades se dieron cuenta de que estaba en el país de forma ilegal. Los familiares dijeron que la mañana del 28 de mayo Hernández había sido golpeado y herido en una pierna por elementos de la Patrulla Fronteriza. Cuando regresó a la frontera para exigir que le dieran tratamiento a sus heridas, fue atacado por los oficiales.
Testigos dijeron que alrededor de 20 agentes de la patrulla fronteriza habían golpeado a Hernández y le habían dado descargas eléctricas hasta que había de-jado de moverse. El hombre fue transportado a un hospital en el lado americano de la frontera, donde falleció el 31 de mayo.
“La posición del gobierno de Estados Unidos es que es una muerte muy trá-gica, no queremos ver nunca una persona morir que está bajo nuestra custodia, agresivamente, estamos estudiando las circunstancias de este caso, el Depar-tamento de Seguridad Nacional está llevando a cabo la revisión del caso. Per-sonalmente siento mucha pena y extiendo mis condolencias a la familia”, dijo Morton.
El gobierno de México demandó una investigación inmediata a fondo de este incidente. Mientras que el médico forense que realizó la autopsia dijo que la muerte de Hernández había sido calificada como homicidio.
Hernández deja huérfanos a cinco hijos de entre 5 y 18 años de edad, todos ellos ciudadanos estadounidenses.
US to investigate death of immigrant while on border patrol custody

MEXICO CITY – John Morton, Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security, said the U.S. government is going to investigate the death of Anastasio Hernandez, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who died after being severely beaten by border patrol agents.
Hernandez was severely beaten and received electric shocks from bor-der patrol agents late May 28, when authorities said he resisted deporta-tion at the San Ysidro point of entry near Tijuana.
Relatives said Hernandez had lived illegally in the United States for 21 years and that he had been deported a few days before the incident because of a traffic accident, when authorities realized he was in the country illegally. The morning of May 28 Hernandez allegedly had been injured on a leg by Border Patrol agents, who had beaten him. When he returned to the border to demand help for the injuries he had suffered that morning, he was attacked by officers.
Witnesses said that about 20 border patrol agents beat Hernandez and tasered him until he didn’t move. The man was taken to a hospital in the U.S. side of the border, where he died May 31.
“The position of the United States government is that this is a tragic death, we don’t ever want to see the violent death of a person while under our custody, we are studying the circumstances of this case, the Department of Homeland Security is reviewing the case. I personally feel very sorry and extend my condolences to the family” Morton said.
The Mexican government immediately demanded a thorough investi-gation of the case. Meanwhile, the medical examiner classified Hernan-dez’ death as a homicide.
Hernandez leaves behind five children between 18 and 5 years old, all of them U.S. citizens.

WASHINGTON – El presidente de Estados Unidos Barack Obama y la gobernadora de Arizona, Jan Brewer se reunieron en la Casa Blanca para hablar sobre inmigración.
Brewer se encontraba en Washington para asistir a una reunión de trabajo con otros gobernadores de la nación. Originalmente se había dicho que la reunión entre Obama y Brewer no podría realizarse durante este viaje, debi-do a conflictos en la agenda del presidente. Sin embargo, a principios de esta semana se anunció que la reunión se llevaría a cabo el 3 de junio.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer met at the White House to talk about immigration.
Brewer was in Washington D.C. this week to attend a meeting with gov-ernors from other states. At first the White House had said that a meeting between Brewer and the President was not possible because of conflicts in the president’s agenda. But early this week it was announced that Brewer and Obama would meet June 3.
Brewer, in comments she made prior to meeting with Obama, said that she wanted to talk about border security and immigration.
“I think it’s important that the leader of the United States and the gover-nor of the State of Arizona sit down face to face and have a conversation about what exactly is going on in Arizona,” she said.
Obama announced last week that he would deploy 1,200 National Guard
troops to the border and would request $500 million to help secure the southern border.
The president has been critical of SB 1070, a bill signed into law by Brew-er in April, which deals directly with illegal immigration. The law makes it a state crime to cross the border illegally and requires officers to verify the immigration status of a person if they have reasonable suspicion the person is in the country illegally. This law will become effective July 29, but since it was approved has been attacked all over the country.
Those against it say it encourages racial profiling against Hispanics, while those who support it say that the states must take action against illegal im-migration if the federal government is not doing anything to stop it.
Obama has said that the Arizona law uses the wrong approach to dealing with illegal immigration and has instructed the Department of Justice to review the law and check if it violates civil rights.

WEST CHICAGO – Con un cos-to total de 7.7 millones de dólares, el Distrito de Protección de Bomberos de West Chicago ha inaugurado dos nuevas estaciones de bomberos.
Las estaciones de bomberos, lo-calizadas en el 1651 Atlantic Drive y 1080 Commerce Drive, cuentan con lo último en tecnología, inclu-yendo pantallas que permiten tener información actualizada sobre el equipo disponible en todo el distrito de bomberos.
La construcción de las estaciones de bomberos fue aprobada por los electores en abril de 2007, para ace-lerar el tiempo de respuesta a emer-gencias en un distrito que cuenta con varios cruces de ferrocarril.
Para dar servicio en las dos es-taciones de bomberos el distrito de bomberos ha contratado a 12 perso-
nas. Las nuevas estaciones también cuentan con comodidades para los bomberos, incluyendo estufas que se apagan automáticamente cuando suena la alarma, televisión de pan-talla plana, una biblioteca para es-tudiar y un cuarto de ejercicios con caminadora, bicicleta estacionaria y pesas.

West Chicago opens two new fire stations

WEST CHICAGO –The West Chicago Fire Protection District recently opened two new fire stations, at a cost of $7.7 million.
The new fire stations, located at 1651 Atlantic Drive and 1080 Commerce Drive, have the latest in technology, including screens that display updated information of the availability of resources throughout the fire district.
The construction of these two fire stations was passed by voters in April 2007, to provide a faster response to emergency calls in a district crisscros-sed by train tracks.
The fire protection district hired 12 people to provide service at the new stations, which also feature some comforts for the firefighters, including stoves that shut-off automatically when the alarm sounds, as well as a flat screen TV, a library to study and an exercise room with a treadmill, a bike and weights.
Elgin to implement ‘311’ Customer Service line

ELGIN – In an effort to give residents a place where all their answers about city services can be answered, officials have announce plans to im-plement a 311 call center for non-emergency calls.
City officials said the implementation of this call center is an effort that they hope will help them provide better customer service, and also will allow them to check which areas need improvement.
During a city council meeting Dan Ault, city management analyst of or-ganizational development, said that the 311 call centers are an access point for residents to obtain information about and request municipal services.
While the 311 phone line won’t be operational until 2012, Elgin resi-dents can now call the Public Works Department, where an operator will route the call to the appropriate department. The Public Works line is (847) 697-3160.
During his presentation before city council, Ault said the objective be-hind the implementation of this call center is to give residents a more ef-ficient way of accessing city services, something that can prove confusing given the number of listings that exist for the city.
“If you have a phone book at home, I encourage you to go to the gov-ernment blue pages and look at how many different listings there are for the city of Elgin, it’s right about 50 listings,” Ault said. “What this ulti-mately leads to is citizen confusion as to which number to call when you have a specific request.”
Similar phone systems have been installed and are operational in cities throughout the country, including Chicago.

Changes to liquor code proposed in Aurora

AURORA – Aurora aldermen have preliminarily approved some changes to the liquor code, including the cre-ation of a new one-year probation period for new liquor licensees, the requirement that all liquor sellers and servers must have state certification, and increase seating restrictions for taverns.
City Clerk Cheryl Vonhoff said during a Committee of the Whole meeting that the most significant changes to the code include the state certification and the probation period.
The one-year probation period for new licensees would allow liquor commissioner (Mayor Tom Weisner) to have a hearing if there is a violation to the code, and depending on the severity of the violation, the license can be revoked after the hearing, instead of implementing progressive discipline.
The new code would require all liquor sellers or servers to get a state certification within 90 days of getting hired and also would prohibit them from possessing open alcohol in public.
Another change includes the minimum requirement for seating at bars and taverns in the downtown area. This minimum seating requirement would have to be followed at all times. “They can’t be moving tables and chairs to make their dance floor bigger,” Vonhoff said.
Aldermen will vote on the new liquor code during the June 8 city council meeting.

Roadway improvements come to I-55 in Will County
CHICAGO – The Illinois De-partment of Transportation is let-ting Will County drivers know that between June and November there will be some road improvements that will impact traffic flow.
The improvements include patch-ing and resurfacing of the roadway and bride decks on I-55 from south of I-80 to the Will/Grundy County line near Reed Road. Most of the roadway work will be completed in the overnight hours. However, the work to patch and resurface bridge decks will require permanent lane closures, and drivers should expect delays and allow extra time to travel to their desired location.

La empresa ha dicho que este año han registrado 12 reportes de per-sonas que se han hecho pasar como empleados de ComEd, dijo el voce-
ro de la compañía Jeff Burdick. Du-rante 2009 solamente se reportaron siete incidentes.
De acuerdo a un comunicado emitido por ComEd, los impostores utilizan una serie de tácticas para atrapar a sus víctimas. CHICAGO – ComEd, the electricity company, is asking customers to take precautions, so they don’t be-come victims of criminals who impersonate company employees to get money or information from them.
The utility company has said that so far this year there have been reports of 12 cases in which people have im-personated employees, according to ComEd spokesper-son Jeff Burdick. In 2009 the company only received seven reports of similar incidents.
The impersonators use a number of tactics to snare their victims, according to a release from ComEd. While in some instances they are dressed in plain clothes, in
some other cases they wore clothes similar to the ones used by utility workers, including hard hats, a shirt with the company logo or a generic orange safety vest.
Utility officials said residents and business owners always should ask for a company photo ID before al-lowing any utility worker into their home or business and never pay on-site for services.
Not only has the electricity company been affected. Other utility companies have had the same problem of impersonators, including gas companies and cable TV services.
Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam is asked to report it to local police and ComEd, if appli-cable, to (800) 550-6154.

MEXICO CITY – Manuel Lapuente, head coach of soccer club Amer-ica, has said that he is interested in becoming the National Team{‘s head coach for the third time.
Given that current head coach Javier Aguirre has said that he will leave the team after the 2010 World Cup, Lapuente has shown he is willing to take over.
Talking about the players who were chosen to represent Mexico, Lapuente said he hopes some of them who play in European clubs and that haven’t seen much action in their regular leagues, would be able to get in sync before the World Cup starts, and talked about Carlos Vela and Guillermo Franco.
“I hope they see some activity, I hope Aguirre and Nestor (de la Torre) can form a good team, given that Vela and Franco played little with their teams. They are on time to get in sync,” he said.
Lapuente said that in the past the Tri was known to be strong in the mid-dle, in the defense and protecting the net, but the forwards weren’t that ready, however, “now we are seeing these young players (forwards Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez) they can give the team a different per-spective and make it a winning team.”
About the rivals the Tri is going to face during the first round of the World Cup, Lapuente said: “Francia was champion at home, but after that they have declined, it’s not the same team, even when the quality of the players is evident, but I don’t want to say we are at the same level, but it’s a team that can be defeated.” About the other two rivals, he said: “with Uruguay I think we are a little bit above them, we are better, maybe by a 55 to 45 percent margin, but we are above them, and we need to defeat South Africa.”
Beyond the first round, Lapuente is a firm believer that Mexico can go all the way to the final, because it has the tools to succeed.
“Mexico has the capabilities to reach the final, the way the games and the rivals present themselves will give the rhythm to grow or to pull back, the fifth game has been talked about a lot, but what it represents, that we had it and let it go, means that we can do it and we can defeat anyone,” he said.

ALEMANIA – Gerardo Torrado e Israel Castro, jugadores de la Selec-ción Mexicana que está concentrada en Herzogenaurach, Alemania, ofre-cieron una conferencia de prensa durante su preparación para enfrentar a Italia en Bélgica el 3 de junio.
Durante la conferencia, Torrado habló sobre la salida de Jonathan Dos Santos de la selección en el corte final de Aguirre, realizado el 31 de mayo.
“La decisión iba a ser tomada, éramos 24 y tenía que pasar. A todos nos pega pero hay que seguir trabajando. A Giovani le pega de una forma más directa, porque es su hermano, entonces hay que intentar arroparlo, (...) he-mos platicado con él para que se sienta lo más a gusto posible, es un jugador importante como lo son los otros 22 jugadores que han sido elegidos. Hay que hacerlo sentir como en casa, muy a gusto y que siga entrenando con todos nosotros para llegar lo mejor posible al Mundial”
Al respecto, también externó su opinión el mediocampista Israel Castro:“Fue justa la salida porque, como dice Gerardo, lo sabíamos desde antes
de venir al viaje que uno iba a quedar fuera y cualquiera estábamos expues-tos a eso, entonces al final en ese lado sabíamos que tenía que haber una salida”.
Por otra parte, Torrado expresó sus expectativas sobre lo que viene para el Tricolor en los próximos días después del tiempo que tienen trabajando:

Ya que Javier Aguirre ha anunciado que dejará la Se-lección después del Mundial Sudáfrica 2010, Lapuen-te se muestra dispuesto a quedarse con el paquete.
Con respecto a los convocados a la Selección Na-cional, Lapuente indicó que espera que algunos juga-dores que militan en equipos europeos, pero que han visto poca acción, puedan agarrar un buen ritmo antes del inicio de la Copa Mundial. En particular se refirió a Carlos Vela y Guillermo Franco.
“Ojalá tengan actividad, espero que Aguirre y Nés-tor (de la Torre) puedan armar un buen equipo ya que Vela y Franco participaron poco con sus equipos. Es-tán a tiempo para tomar ritmo y futbol”.
Lapuente dijo que en el pasado la selección mostra-ba fuerza en la media cancha, en la defensa y la por-tería, pero en el frente no se veía mucha decisión, sin embargo “ahora estamos viendo que esos jóvenes (los delanteros Giovani Dos Santos y Javier Hernández) le
pueden dar otra cara a la selección y la pueden volver ganadora”.
Con respecto a los rivales de México en la fase de grupo, Lapuente hizo una evaluación de los contrin-cantes.
“Francia fue campeón en casa, pero fuera de ahí ha bajado mucho, ya no es el mismo equipo, aunque la calidad de los jugadores se distingue, pero no quiero decir que estemos a la par, aunque sí es de los equipos a los que se les puede ganar”, dijo. Con respecto a los otros dos rivales, dijo que “con Uruguay creo que esta-mos un poco arriba, estamos mejor, quizá un porcenta-je bajo, 55 a 45, pero arriba de ellos, y a Sudáfrica hay que ganarle, no hay más”.
Más allá de la primera fase, Lapuente es un firme creyente que México puede llegar hasta el final, ya que tiene las armas para conseguirlo.
“México tiene la capacidad para llegar a la final, el devenir de los partidos y los rivales es algo que debe dar la pauta para crecer o desmerecer, se está ‘caca-reando’ mucho el quinto partido, pero lo que repre-senta hacerlo, que ya lo tuvimos y no lo hicimos, eso quiere decir que si podemos, a cualquiera se le puede ganar”, aseveró.

CD. JUAREZ – The Chihuahua States’ Attorney informed that dur-ing the month of May 253 people were killed in this city, making it the deadliest month this year.
According to information pro-vided by the State of Chihuahua States’ Attorney, 227 people were killed in January, 163 in February, 203 in March and 240 in April.
May 28 marked the first 100 days of the program “We all are Juarez”, a program created to restore safety and the social well-being through government sponsored programs,
but some organizations say it has been a failure.
Residents of the Villas de Sal-varcar neighborhood held a me-morial mass May 31 to remember the 16 people who were killed in this neighborhood four months ago by gunmen with ties to organized crime.
After the mass, relatives and friends of the deceased released white balloons in protest for the violence that is felt in this city.
Currently Juarez is the most dan-gerous city in Mexico, even though over 5,000 Federal officers keep patrolling the streets.

ALBUQUERQUE – Susana Martinez, a district attorney in the south-ern part of New Mexico was elected as the Republican Party candidate for governor during the primary elections held June 1.
She will run against Democratic Party candidate Diane Denish. This is the first time in New Mexico’s history that the state is going to have a woman governor.
Also this is only the third time in U.S. history that two women vie for the highest office in one state and the first time a Hispanic woman is a candidate for governor.
Martinez, Dona Ana County District Attorney, won the primary elec-tions by 51 percent of the vote, according to unofficial vote counts. She was challenged by four other Republican candidates.
Republicans hope to regain the governor’s office after eight years of Democratic control under bill Richardson, who cannot seek reelection for another term. Denish was Richardson’s running mate in 2002 and 2006.
Making reference to the ties between Richardson and Denish, Martinez said that she represented a big change and that Denish had been a good soldier to Richardson. “She had been part of the failed policies that have existed the last 71/2 years despite her efforts to separate herself,” Martinez said in an interview with AP.
The 50 year-old GOP candidate switched parties in 1996, when she ran for district attorney against the Democratic incumbent, defeating him. Since then she has been reelected to the post in the second largest county in the state, which is a strong Democratic stronghold.
During the primary campaign, Martinez emphasized her experience fighting crime in a county that is at the Mexico-US border. She also sup-ported the repeal of state laws that allow undocumented immigrants to get drivers’ licenses and their children to get college scholarships financed by the state lottery system. Martinez also promised to fight against corrup-tion in state government.
Both Martinez and Denish will face each other during the fall to become governor of a state that has been hit hard by the struggling economy and a downturn in revenue, something that will likely force the new governor to deal with a budget shortfall and to make difficult decisions like cuts to education and government services.
Republicans are optimistic they can win the race, even though Demo-crats are ahead in voter registration, because in other races throughout the country the outsiders seem to be win-ning over the insiders.

Ella se enfrentará a Diane Denish, la can-didata demócrata. Esta es la primera vez en la historia del estado que habrá una mujer como gobernador.
Además, es la tercera vez en la historia de los Estados Unidos que se da una contienda a gobernador entre dos mujeres, y la primera vez en que una mujer hispana es candidata a gobernador.

CD. JUÁREZ – La Procuraduría de Justicia del Estado de Chihuahua informó que durante el mes de mayo 253 personas fueron asesinadas en la ciudad, convirtiendo a mayo en el mes más mortal del año.

María Celeste, victim of domestic violence
UNA VOZ STAFFMIAMI – Telemundo news anchor Maria Celeste Arraras became the main character of an
incident in which apparently she was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her new boyfriend.
Maria Celeste and her boyfriend, a businessman from Venezuela who is six years her junior, allegedly had a fight at a party the night of May 28, when they were celebrating the eight anniver-sary of her program “Al Rojo Vivo” and her new contract.
The couple left the party but the fight continued at a private property, according to authorities.The police report states that early May 29 Maria Celeste called police to ask for help because
her boyfriend, identified as Raul Quintana, was being abusive. Authorities arrived at the scene and arrested the man, who was charged with domestic violence and possession of cocaine.
During the broadcast of Al Rojo Vivo June 1, Noticiero Telemundo anchor Jose Diaz Balart touched on the subject.
When asked, Arraras said that she hadn’t been abused physically, as it had been said, but said that the abuse can be psychological and verbal.
“There are details in the police report that are not accurate, but I don’t want to say much about this because this is a legal matter and I’d rather have it handled through the appropriate channels,” she said.
When asked about the drug charges filed against Quintana, Maria Celeste said she didn’t know he was a drug user. She said that she had never seen her boyfriend use drugs and when authorities arrived at the scene, they checked him several times, and that “this apparently came after” officers took him away.
Quintana, who spent several hours in jail and was freed after paying a $2,500 bond, has to go to court June 28 to answer to the accusations.
During a phone conversation with Telemundo, he said about the incident that “The police re-port has been altered also in the matter of drugs. Never! I have been a sports player all my life (...) She doesn’t have a mark, if I hit someone repeatedly, as the report states, she would have a mark. Mari and I had a discussion. I was very hot-headed. I imagine this is going to have a positive outcome in court.”

MIAMI – La presentadora de televisión de Telemundo, María Celeste Arrarás, fue protago-nista de una historia de escándalo, al darse a conocer que fue víctima de un aparente incidente de violencia doméstica por parte de su novio.
Aparentemente María Celeste y su novio, un empresario venezolano seis años más joven que ella, discutieron en una fiesta donde se celebraba el octavo aniversario del programa Al Rojo Vivo, conducido por ella, y la renovación de su contrato, la noche del 28 de mayo.
La pareja abandonó el lugar, pero de acuerdo a las autoridades, la pelea continuó en una pro-piedad privada y fue desde ahí que la conducto-ra llamó a las autoridades.
Según el reporte policial, la madrugada del 29 de mayo María Celeste llamó a las autoridades para pedir ayuda ya que su novio, identificado como Raúl Quintana, la estaba agrediendo. Las autoridades llegaron a la propiedad y detuvie-ron al hombre de inmediato y fue acusado de agresión doméstica y posesión de cocaína.
Durante la transmisión de Al Rojo Vivo el 1 de junio, María Celeste dejó que el conductor de noticiero Telemundo José Díaz Balart pre-sentara la noticia y hablara sobre el tema.
Al aire María Celeste dijo que ella no había sido agredida físicamente, como se había espe-culado cuando se dio a conocer la noticia, sin embargo, recalcó que el abuso puede ser verbal y psicológico, además de físico.
“Hay detalles en el informe policial que no son precisos, pero no quiero abundar en eso por-que al ser una situación legal prefiero que se maneje por las vías adecuadas”, comentó.
Al ser cuestionada sobre la acusación de posesión de cocaína que le hicieron a su pareja, la presentadora dijo desconocer que él usara drogas. Arrarás aseguró que nunca ha visto a su novio con drogas y cuando las autoridades llegaron lo revisaron varias veces, por lo que “eso surgió aparentemente después” de que se lo llevaron.
Por su parte Quintana, luego de varias horas en la cárcel, salió después de haber pagado una fianza de 2 mil 500 dólares y tiene que presentarse en la corte el 28 de junio para responder a las acusaciones.
Él habló vía telefónica con representantes de Telemundo y dijo sobre el incidente que “El re-porte de la policía está alterado también con relación a la droga. ¡Jamás! He sido deportista toda mi vida. (…) Ella no tiene ninguna marca, si yo golpeara a alguien repetidamente, como dice el reporte, tendría alguna marca. Mari y yo tuvimos una discusión. Yo estaba bastante exaltado. Me imagino que esto se va a resolver de una manera positiva en corte”.

CD. DE MÉXICO – La reconocida actriz y bailarina Edith González, de 45 años de edad, aparentemente está en pláticas con Televisión Azteca para participar en una futura telenovela al lado de Cristian Meier.
Los rumores de su incursión en Azteca se desprendieron después de que el blog “Vida de Ce-lebridad” asegurara que la ex “Aventurera” se habría reunido con algunos directores de la tele-visora del Ajusco, con quienes incluso habría firmado un contrato por los próximos tres años.
Trascendió que su salida no tiene nada contentos a los ejecutivos de Televisa, por lo que le habrían pedido a Alejandro Benítez, que hiciera hasta lo imposible para convencerla de que per-manezca en las filas de la televisora, ya que fue ahí donde se inició profesionalmente en 1970. Su más reciente proyecto con Televisa fue la telenovela “Camaleones”.

MEXICO CITY – The famed actress and dancer Edith Gonzalez, 45, apparently is in talks with Television Azteca to star in a soap opera alongside Cristian Meier.
The rumors about her move from Televisa to Tele-vision Azteca came after the “Vida de Celebridad” blog posted that the actress had met with some Tele-vision Azteca executives, with whom she apparently signed a three-year contract.
It has been reported that Televisa executives are not happy with this and have asked Alejandro Benitez to convince her to stay with the company in which she got her start in 1970. Her most recent project in Tele-visa was the soap opera “Camaleones.”
