El gobernador de California Arnold Schwarzenegger sugirió que su estado pudiera aliviar los problemas que tiene de sobrepoblación en las cárceles si envía a miles de prisioneros indocumentados a cárceles en México.
“Creo que podemos hacer las cosas mejor dentro del sistema peniten-ciario si consideramos, por ejemplo, a los 20 mil prisioneros que son inmigrantes indocumentados y que están aquí y los enviamos a Méxi-co”, dijo el gobernador a los reporteros reunidos en el Club de Prensa de Sacramento el 25 de enero. Además, comentó que el gobierno podría ahorrarse un billón de dólares con esta medida.
California es uno de los estados con mayor sobrepoblación en las pri-
siones, con aproximadamente 170 mil prisioneros albergados en insta-laciones diseñadas para 100 mil prisioneros, de acuerdo a información del año 2007.
Schwarzenegger declaró una emergencia fiscal a principios de enero, advirtiendo que se necesitarán recortes severos para lidiar con el déficit de 19.9 billones de dólares.
“Piénsenlo. Si California le diera dinero al México… Les pagaría-mos para construir la prisión en México. Y entonces tendríamos a todos esos inmigrantes indocumentados allá en prisión. Esto pudiera reducir a la mitad los costos de construir la prisión y administrar la prisión. Podríamos ahorrar un billón de dólares que pudieran ir a la educación superior”.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said his state could solve some of the overcrowding issues at the local jails if they could send thousands of undocumented prisoners to jails in Mexico.
“I think that we can do so much better in the prison system alone if we can go and take, inmates for instance, the 20,000 inmates that are illegal immigrants that are here and get them to Mexico,” Schwarzenegger said to reporters gathered at the Sacramento Press Club Jan. 25. He said the state government could save a billion dollars with this measure.
California is one of the states with the highest rate of overcrowding in
prisons. About 170,000 inmates were housed in facilities designed for 100,000 prisoners, according to data from 2007.
Schwarzenegger declared a fiscal emergency in the state in early January, warning severe cuts were needed to deal with the 19.9 billion deficit.
“Think about it – if California gives Mexico the money (…) We pay them to build the prison down in Mexico. And then we have those un-documented immigrants down there in prison. It would half the costs to build the prison and run the prison. We could save a billion dollars right there that could go into higher education."

DURANGO – Alrededor de 500 objetos punzo cortantes han sido decomisados a internos del Centro de Readaptación Social número 1 de Durango, luego de que autoridades realizaran diversos operativos a consecuencia de la riña del 20 de enero que dejó 24 muertos.
Autoridades de la Procuraduría de Justicia del Estado, de la Secreta-ría Pública Estatal y de la Delegación de la Procuraduría General de la República en Durango, dijeron que durante las revisiones en el interior del penal se aseguraron 443 instrumentos con mango de madera y hoja metálica de cortar de distintas longitudes, una punta de varilla de 50 centímetros, 20 tijeras, dos navajas, cinco cortaúñas y varias prendas de vestir ensangrentadas.
Los funcionarios dijeron que también se han realizado pruebas para saber si los 75 elementos de seguridad y guardias de la prisión han dis-parado recientemente un arma de fuego. Además, informaron que fue-ron aseguradas todas las armas de fuego de los custodios y que todo el personal de seguridad, incluyendo el director del penal, están siendo investigados.
A raíz de los incidentes del 20 de enero, se han trasladado nueve reos al Centro de Readaptación número 3, localizado en la ciudad de Guada-lupe Victoria.
Además, el nuevo Secretario de Seguridad Pública de Durango, Va-lentín Romano López, designó a Noel Díaz Rodríguez como director encargado del Cereso 1. Diaz recibió instrucciones de contratar a 50 nuevos custodios y mejorar las medidas de seguridad del penal.

DURANGO, MEXICO – About 500 weapons have been seized in-side the Durango State Jail number 1, after authorities conducted opera-tives in the wake of a brawl inside the prison Jan. 20 that ended with 24 inmates dead.
Authorities from the State’s Attorneys office, the state Public Safety office and the Delegation of the Attorney General's Office in Duran-go, said that during the revisions inside the jail officers had seized 443 homemade weapons featuring wooden handles and metallic blades of assorted lengths, a 50-centimeter long rot tip, 20 pairs of scissors, two knives, five nail clippers and several blood stained pieces of clothing.
Officers said that all 75 guards and security officers in the prison have been tested to see if they had fired a gun recently. They also informed that all the firearms assigned to the guards have been secured and that all the security personnel, including the jail’s director, are under investiga-tion for the incident.
In the aftermath of the Jan. 20 brawl, nine prisoners have been trans-ferred to the state jail number 3, located in the town of Guadalupe Vic-toria.
Also, a new jail director has been named. Noel Diaz Rodriguez was appointed to the post by the new Secretary of Public Safety, Valentin Romano Lopez, who instructed Diaz to hire 50 new security guards and to upgrade safety measures in the jail.

Teen charged with trying to impersonate a police officer

AURORA – Aurora police charged an 18 year-old man with trying to impersonate an officer and felony theft, af-ter he was stopped for a minor traffic violation in the early morning hours of Jan. 26.
Officers stopped Edgar Pedroza, of the 600 block of Elmwood Drive, in the Rathbone and Sard avenues area at about 1:47 a.m., for failure to signal. During the stop police dispatchers received a call that a minivan with blue oscil-lating lights had tried to stop a vehicle in the area of New York Street and Farnsworth Avenue shortly before Pedroza was stopped. In that case the victim didn’t stop and called police.
Pedroza’s vehicle matched the description given by dis-patchers. When officers searched the vehicle, they found over $1,000 worth of electronic equipment and other stolen goods.
According to police, during an interview Pedroza admit-ted he had tried to stop other vehicles using a blue oscillat-ing light.
Pedroza’s passenger, a 17 year-old man, was charged with felony theft and curfew violation.

AURORA – La policía ha acusado a un joven de 18 años de tratar de hacerse pasar por policía, además de robo con felonía, después de ser detenido por una infracción menor de tránsito el 26 de enero por la madrugada.
Oficiales de policía detuvieron a Edgar Pedroza, residen-te de la cuadra 600 de Elmwood Drive, en el área de las avenidas Rathbone y Sard alrededor de la 1:47 a.m., cuando no puso la direccional para dar la vuelta.
En el transcurso de esta detención de tránsito los ope-radores de la policía recibieron una llamada de que una camioneta tipo minivan con luces oscilantes azules había tratado de detener a un automóvil en el área de New York Street y Farnsworth Avenue poco antes de que Pedroza fue-ra detenido.
La víctima en ese incidente no se detuvo y llamó a la policía.
La descripción de la camioneta era similar a la de Pedro-za. Cuando los oficiales realizaron una revisión del vehícu-lo, encontraron más de mil dólares en artículos electrónicos y misceláneos robados.
De acuerdo a la policía, durante una entrevista Pedroza admitió haber intentado detener a otros vehículos usando una luz azul oscilante.
También fue acusado de robo con felonía y violación de toque de queda el pasajero de 17 años que viajaba con Pe-droza.

AURORA – Después de unas cuantas semanas de haber reducido considerablemente sus actividades debido a cues-tiones de salud, la concejal del Distrito 2 Juany Garza se encuentra trabajando de lleno para atender las necesidades de su distrito.
Una de las primeras actividades en las que la concejal Garza está trabajando es en conjunto con Marilyn Weisner, directora del Banco Interreligioso de Comida de Aurora.
Ambas mujeres han coordinado realizar, por lo menos dos veces al mes, una despensa móvil para que las personas que no tengan cómo llegar al banco de comida, puedan ob-tener los alimentos necesarios para su familia.
“Esto es algo que va a beneficiar mucho a la comunidad de esta área, sobre todo a los que no tienen transporte”, dijo Garza, quien ha recibido llamadas de residentes de su dis-
trito con necesidades de comida, pero que no pueden llegar a las despensas o bancos donde se las pueden dar.
La primera visita del banco móvil de comida será el 25 de febrero, de 10 a.m. a 12 p.m. en el estacionamiento de la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón, 771 Fulton Street. Las per-sonas interesadas en recibir alimentos ese día deben llenar una solicitud para que los registren y el día del banco móvil de comida deberán llevar una identificación con fotografía y dirección. Se aceptará como forma de identificación la matrícula consular o una identificación bancaria.
La inscripción para este banco de comida está abierta a residentes del área de Aurora, incluyendo personas que ya están registradas en otras despensas.
“Pueden estar registrados en otros bancos de comida, no importa”, dijo la concejal Garza. “Este banco de comida móvil va a ser de carnes congeladas para que la gente pueda cocinar sus comidas, así que no importa si ya están registra-
das en otro lado”.El objetivo es proporcionar este servicio a 300 familias
cada dos semanas. Los alimentos son proporcionados por el Banco Interreligioso de Comida de Aurora.
La concejal Garza tiene solicitudes disponibles tanto en inglés como en español. Para obtener su solicitud o para ser voluntario durante la entrega de comida, llame a la concejal al Tel. (630) 499-5560.

Detectan negocios que venden tabaco a menores

AURORA – Tres establecimientos comer-ciales de Aurora que vendieron productos de tabaco a menores de edad fueron descubiertos por la policía.
El Grupo de investigadores de Operaciones Especiales del Departamento de Policía reali-zó revisiones aleatorias la semana pasada, en establecimientos que venden productos de ta-baco y detectaron a tres negocios que vendie-ron este tipo de mercancía a un menor de edad que estaba colaborando con la policía.
Empleados de Randall Liquors en al cua-dra 1000 de North Farnsworth Avenue, Shell Gas en la cuadra 1800 de North Farnsworth y El Palenque en la cuadra 300 de North Farn-sworth, recibieron citatorios para aparecer en al corte por vender productos de tabaco a un menor de edad.
La policía dijo que continuará realizando operativos similares en el futuro para asegurar que se cumplan las leyes.
Banco móvil de comida, proyecto de concejal Garza para atender las necesidades de su distrito

AURORA – After several weeks in “light duty” due to some health issues, Ward 2 Alderman Juany Garza is back at work, helping cover the needs of her community.
One of the projects is collaboration with Marilyn Weis-ner, Executive Director of the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry.
Both women have been able to put together a mobile food pantry, which twice a month will take food to people who don’t have a way to get to the food pantry’s facilities.
“This is something that will be of great benefit for people in this area, especially for those who lack transportation,” Garza said. She has received calls from ward residents who need food, but don’t have a way of getting to the food pan-tries to get it.
The first mobile food pantry stop will be from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 25 in the parking lot of Sacred Heart Church, 771 Fulton Street. People who are interested in receiving food at this location must fill out an application and register be-
forehand. The day of the distribution those who registered must present a photo ID in order to receive food. Acceptable forms of identification include Consular ID cards and bank ID cards.
Registration for the mobile food pantry is open to Aurora area residents, even those who are registered at other food pantries.
“People can be registered at other food bank, that’s not a problem,” Garza said. “This food pantry is providing frozen meat so people can cook their meals. This is why it’s not relevant if they have already registered someplace else.”
Their goal is to serve 300 families every two weeks. The food distributed at this event is provided by the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry.
Alderman Garza has applications for people who are in-terested. Applications are available in English and Spanish. To get an application or to volunteer to help during the mo-bile food pantry, call Alderman Garza at (630) 499-5560.
“This is the first time that a mobile food pantry is taking place, and it’s because the community needs it,” Garza said.

Evacuan a 8 mexicanos de Macchu Picchu

PERÚ – Hasta el momento la embajada de México en Perú ha sido informada de que 8 de los 24 mexicanos que se encontraban en la zona arqueológica de Macchu Picchu el 25 de enero cuando ocurrieron las inundaciones y el deslave de la montaña, fueron ya trasladados a la zona de Cusco y están fuera de peligro.
En entrevista, el cónsul Sergio Juárez destacó que el Ministerio de Turismo de Perú le ha asegurado que los otros 16 mexicanos que aun no han podido ser trasladados a Cuzco se encuentran fuera de peligro.
El diplomático comentó que dos de los ocho mexicanos que ya fueron trasladados a Cus-co son la señora Refugio Chávez Zazueta y el señor José Álvarez y ya se comunicaron con la embajada para notificar que están bien de salud.
El grupo mexicano es he te rogéneo, apuntó el diplomático, compuesto por hombres y mujeres de diversas edades, aunque se desconoce si entre ellos se encuentran menores de edad.
Pueblos inundados, puentes destruidos, casas desplomadas y cientos de turistas varados en Macchu Pichu dominaban el panorama en la región del Cusco, azotada por torrenciales lluvias que han provocado desbordes y aludes que mataron a por lo menos cinco personas, entre ellos una turista argentina.
Las intensas lluvias causaron los deslizamientos y el desborde del río Urubamba, lo que afectó a las pequeñas ciudades de Ollantaytambo y Aguas Calientes, mientras que el Ejér-cito desplegó un operativo junto con la Policía Nacional para evacuar a los turistas de la ciudadela del Macchu y trasladarlos a la fortaleza arqueológica de Sacsayhuamán.

PERU – The Mexican Embassy in Peru received news that 8 out of 24 Mexican citizens who were in the Macchu Picchu archaeological zone Jan. 25 have been evacu-ated to Cuzco and they are safe. Heavy rains flooded the zone and caused mud slides on the mountain.
In an interview Consul Sergio Juarez said the Peruvian Tourism Ministry had as-sured him that the other 16 Mexicans who are waiting to be evacuated to Cuzco are not in danger.
The diplomat said that two of the eight Mexicans who were taken to Cuzco, Refugio Chavez Zazueta and Jose Alvarez, were able to call the Embassy and let them know they were fine.
The official said that the Mexican group is formed by men and women of assorted ages and that they are not sure if there were any children with them.
The Cuzco area was hit by heavy storms that have caused mud slides and floods. Towns are flooded, bridges and homes have been destroyed and hundreds of tourists are trapped in Macchu Picchu. At least five people have died, including an Argentinian tourist.
The intense rains caused the Urubamba river to overflow, flooding the cities of Ol-lantaytambo and Aguas Calientes. Meanwhile the Army activated an operative along with the National Police to evacuate tourists from Macchu Picchu and take them to the archaeological fortress of Sacsayhuaman.

Two dead in Sugar Grove plane crash

Dos hombres de Florida murieron en un accidente de aviación que dañó el garage de una casa en Sugar Grove.
Algunos testigos reportaron haber visto una bola de fue-go en el suelo cerca de una casa en el Municipio de Sugar Grove, enfrente del Colegio Comunitario Waubonsee en la Ruta 47. El incidente se registró alrededor de las 7 p.m. el 23 de enero.
Los oficiales que respondieron a la emergencia descu-brieron que un avión había chocado en la parte norte de una casa localizada en el 43W420 Old Oak.
Aparentemente el avión chocó contra el suelo y se par-tió en numerosas piezas. En el momento del impacto había cuatro personas en la casa, dos adultos y dos niños. Ellos
resultaron ilesos.El tráfico se vio interrumpido en la Ruta 47 entre Bliss
Road y Merrill Road desde las 7 hasta las 11:30 p.m. el día del incidente.
Mientras tanto, las víctimas han sido identificadas como Gary Lee Bradford, de 37 años, y Drago Strahija, de 32, ambos residentes de Florida. De acuerdo a información pre-liminar Bradford se encontraba al mando del avión. Él era un piloto capacitado para volar con instrumentos.
La Agencia de Seguridad en el Transporte (NTSB, por sus siglas en inglés) confirmó que el avión, una nave Piper Aerostar de dos motores, había despegado del Aeropuerto Municipal de Aurora y se dirigía a Denver, Colorado.Tanto la NTSB como la Agencia Federal de aviación están investigando las causas del choque. Two Florida men died in a plane crash that damaged a garage in Sugar Grove.Some people reported seeing a fireball on the ground near a home in Sugar Grove Town-
ship, across the road from Waubonsee Community College on Route 47 at about 7 p.m. Jan. 23.
The initial emergency responders discovered that a plane had crashed just north of the residence located at 43W420 Old Oak.
The plane appeared to have struck the ground and broke into numerous pieces of debris. Some of debris struck the attached garage of the residence.
There were four people in the residence at the time of the crash, two adults and 2 chil-dren. All four of the occupants of the residence were not injured.
Traffic was halted on Rt. 47 between Bliss Road and Merrill Road from 7 to 11:30 p.m.The victims have been identified as Gary Lee Bradford, 37, and Drago Strahija, 32. Ap-
parently Bradford was manning the controls of the plane. He was an instrument rated pilot.The NTSB confirmed that the plane, a twin engine Piper Aerostar, had taken off from the
Aurora Municipal Airport and was headed to Denver Colorado. The NTSB and FAA are continuing the investigation into the crash.

33 personas involucradas en fraude con cheques de nómina
33 people implicated in payroll check scam

ELGIN – Authorities said 33 people have been implicated in a payroll check scam that affected four Northern Illinois counties. At least 13 of the suspects are from Carpentersville or Elgin.
Police have said that over $2 million in phony payroll checks were cashed in several businesses throughout the counties of Kane, Boone, McHenry and Winnebago since July of last year. Some of the affected businesses are located in Elgin and East Dundee.
South Elgin detectives were first involved in this case in September of last year, when they received complaints from Tower Hill Health Care, a local business, who reported that $50,000 had been with-drawn from their account through fraudulent payroll checks.
In the investigation it was discovered that some of those checks had been cashed at local banks and at the Wal-Mart store in East Dundee.
Meanwhile, two Elgin businesses were affected by this scheme: Dino’s Foods on Summit Street and Northwest Liquors on N.McLean Blvd.
Elgin police detective Carla Carter said that about 40 complaints for fraudulent checks were received between the months of Septem-ber and December, with the total amount exceeding $20,000.
Authorities in South Elgin and Elgin said the investigation is still ongoing and that some more people could be charged in the future. However, authorities are confident they have the ringleader behind bars: Carpentersville resident Warren Clark, 43, has been charged with organizing a organizing a continuing financial crimes enterprise. He is being held at the Winnebago County Jail.
According to police, the suspects made phony computer-generated payroll checks that were then cashed at businesses in the four coun-ties. A ringleader in the schemes then laundered the money at area casinos, and paid off those who cashed the counterfeit checks, au-thorities said.

WEST DUNDEE – Un agente federal de inmigración fue arrestado la madrugada del 26 de enero, acusado de haber hecho dos disparos con una pistola para detener una pelea afuera de un bar de West Dundee, infor-maron autoridades de esta población.
Raymonn C. Brown, de 31 años y residente de East Dundee, fue acusado de descarga imprudencial de un arma. El incidente sucedió a la 1:20 a.m. en la cuadra 100 de Main Street.
Al ser arrestado Brown se identificó como un agente del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE).
De acuerdo con el reporte de la policía, un amigo de Brown se vio involucrado en una pelea con otro hom-bre afuera del bar. Brown trató de detener la pelea, pero no lo escucharon, por lo que decidió hacer un par de disparos al aire.
El jefe de la policía de West Dundee David Sawyer dijo que Brown había cooperado con las autoridades en este incidente. El acusado fue llevado a la cárcel del Condado de Kane, donde pagó una fianza de 2 mil dólares y fue liberado. La acusación de disparo imprudencial de un arma de fuego es una felonía de clase 4.

WEST DUNDEE – A federal immigration enforcement agent was arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 26, accused of allegedly shooting off his gun twice to stop a fight outside a West Dundee bar, according to local authorities.
Raymonn C. Brown, 31 and resident of East Dundee, was charged with reckless discharge of a weapon. The incident happened at about 1:20 a.m. in the 100 block of Main Street.
When Brown was taken into custody he identified himself as an agent with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE).
According to a police report, a friend of Brown got involved in a fight with another man outside the bar. Brown tried to stop the fight but didn’t succeed and decided to discharge his gun a couple of times in the air.
West Dundee Chief of Police David Sawyer said that Brown was cooperative with police. The man was taken to the Kane County Jail, where he paid a $2,000 bond and was free. The charge is a class 4 felony.
As for the men involved in the brawl, Michael Wilde, of Poplar Grove, and Chris Hirsimaki, of Carpenters-ville, were cited for public fighting, a local ordinance violation.
Meanwhile, ICE spokeswoman Gail Montenegro said that the agent had been reassigned to administrative duties while the local investigation and an internal investigation are finished.
Police haven’t determined if the gun used in the incident was the officer’s service gun or a personal weapon.

ELGIN – Autoridades han nombrado a 33 per-sonas como participantes en un fraude con cheques de pago de nómina que afectó a cuatro condados del norte de Illinois. Cuando menos 13 de los implicados son de Carpentersville o Elgin.
La policía ha calculado que más de 2 millones de dólares en cheques fraudulentos de pago de nómina fueron cobrados en varios negocios de los condados de Kane, Boone, McHenry y Winnebago desde julio del año pasado, incluyendo algunos negocios en El-gin y East Dundee.
Detectives de South Elgin primero se vieron invo-lucrados en el caso cuando recibieron denuncias en septiembre del año pasado por parte de Tower Hill Health Care, una empresa local, que denunció que se habían retirado 50 mil dólares de su cuenta bancaria mediante cheques de nómina fraudulentos.

MEXICO – El goleador paraguayo de las Águilas del Amé-rica, Salvador Cabañas, quien recibiera un impacto de bala en la cabeza, se encuentra grave en un hospital de la Ciudad de Méxi-co. Las causas de este ataque todavía no están bien definidas.
Cabañas fue llevado a un hospital de la Ciudad de México, donde fue intervenido quirúrgicamente para extraerle coágulos del cerebro y tratar de extraer la bala que lo hirió. Sin embargo, los médicos que operaron al goleador decidieron no extraer la bala, que permanece alojada en la parte de atrás de la cabeza del jugador.
El futbolista de 29 año en un principio mostró cambios fa-vorables, pero durante el 27 de enero su estado comenzó a de-terirorarse, mostrando un edema en el cerebro, por lo que el jugador permanece sedado.
Los hechos ocurrieron alrededor de las 5:30 de la mañana del 25 de enero en el Bar Bar, al sur de la ciudad de México, donde el paraguayo se encontraba junto con unos amigos y su esposa. Este sitio es un centro de reunión para artistas, depor-tistas, empresarios y políticos.
El incidente se registró al interior de los sanitarios del centro nocturno. Después de revisar los videos de seguridad del bar, autoridades han podido identificar a un sospechoso.
El procurador capitalino, Miguel Ángel Mancera, presentó el video de seguridad del bar Bar, con el cual se logró estable-cer que el atacante del futbolista Salvador Cabañas, responde a la identidad de José Jorge Balderas Garza alias ‘el JJ’, presunto agresor del futbolista Salvador Cabañas.
De acuerdo con las imágenes, es un hombre de aproxima-
damente 35 años, 1.77 metros de estatura y a quien, según los testimonios, se le ha podido percibir un acento sinaloense.
Este sujeto es cliente de este lugar desde hace varios años y siempre se hace acompañar de una escolta, por lo que las au-toridades judiciales no descartan que pudiera estar relacionado con el crimen organizado.
Mancera mostró el video y en él se puede percibir que El Modelo era acompañado por otro sujeto, quien originalmente fue identificado como Francisco, alias El Contador, pero cuya
identidad ahora se desconoce, quien habría esperado afuera del sanitario, mientras el JJ habría atacado al futbolista paraguayo.
Las autoridades judiciales capitalinas en un principio se en-focaron en la teoría de que la agresión al futbolista había sido consecuencia de algún mal entendido por la cercanía de una bailarina rubia, de origen aparentemente cubano, que estaría cerca de la mesa de Cabañas y sus acompañantes. Sin embar-go, ahora las investigaciones no respaldan esta teoría y el mo-vil del crimen se desconoce.
En el video se logra percibir que el matrimonio ingresa cada uno a los sanitarios correspondientes y en el baño de hombres entran enseguida los dos sujetos, pero El Contador sale unos instantes después y platica con la rubia.
Tras unos minutos, sale corriendo el agresor aún cuando un guardia del centro nocturno se asoma aparentemente tras escu-char un ruido.
El guardia es aventado y los sujetos huyen del bar y salen para subirse a un vehículo que ya los esperaba.
El procurador recalcó que hasta ahora no se puede afirmar que estos sujetos están relacionados con el crimen organizado, pero es de llamar la atención que se conduce con escoltas. Sin embargo, explicó que solicitará a la PGR su colaboración para buscar al atacante con su presunto cómplice.
Las autoridades se encuentran investigando una posible obs-taculización de justicia en el caso, ya que aparentemente los empleados del bar dejaron que el sospechoso huyera y negaron la entrada a las autoridades cuando se presentaron a indagar el incidente. Además, se indaga el por qué el antro continuaba abierto a las 5:30 de la mañana, cuando los centros nocturnos deben cerrar sus puertas a las 2:30 a.m.

MEXICO – Salvador Cabañas, a soccer player with First Division America, was shot in the head and is in grave condi-tion at a hospital in Mexico City. The motive behind the attack is not clear yet.
Cabañas was taken to a Mexico City hospital, where he un-derwent surgery to deal with blood cloths and surgeons tried to extract the bullet, but decided against it because the procedure could cause more damage.
The 29 year-old player showed some progress right after the surgery, but on Jan. 27 developed edema and the medical team
decided to keep him sedated to prevent any further damage to his brain.
The incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. Jan. 25 inside the Bar Night Club located in Mexico City’s south side, where the player was having fun with some friends and his wife. This night club is very popular with artists, sports stars, business-men and politicians. The player was shot inside the bar’s rest-room and authorities have identified a suspect by reviewing the night club’s surveillance videos.
Miguel Angel Mancera, Mexico City’s Attorney General, pre-sented some footage from the bar’s surveillance cameras, where they were able to identify the alleged shooter, who has been
identified as Jose Jorge Balderas Garza, aka JJ and El Modelo.According to the footage, the suspect is a man of about 35
years old, 1.77 meters in height and who speaks with an accent from the northern state of Sinaloa.
The man has been a regular at the night club for several years and he is always with a bodyguard, something that has made authorities consider the possibility that the suspect may be involved with organized crime.
The video shows “El Modelo” and another man, who origi-nally was identified as Francisco, a.k.a “El Contador,” but now his identity is unknown, as someone who could have waited outside the restroom while JJ attacked the player.
In the early stages of the investigation, Mexico City authori-ties were following the lead that the incident was motivated by a misunderstanding caused by a blonde woman, apparently Cuban, who was seated near Cabañas’ table. However, that theory is not being supported by evidence and the motive be-hind the incident is unkown.
The video shows Cabañas and his wife going to their respec-tive restrooms. He was followed by two men, but “El Conta-dor” got out of the restroom and started a conversation with a blonde woman.
A few minutes later the suspect runs out of the restroom, even when a security guard looks inside after apparently hear-ing a noise. The suspect pushes the guard away and both he and his bodyguard leave the bar and get in a car that was wait-ing for them.
The attorney general said that while they don’t know for sure these men are linked to organized crime, it’s odd that he relies on bodyguards. He also said he is requesting the help of federal authorities to find the suspect and his bodyguard.

Former Guatemalan President in police custody

GUATEMALA CITY – Authorities captured former President Alfonso Portillo Jan. 26, a day after the United States prosecutors indicted him on charges of laundering mon-ey stolen from foreign donations meant to buy children’s books.
Portillo was captured in a ranch located in the province of Izabal in northern Guate-mala. He was President from Jan. 14, 2000 to Jan. 14, 2004.
According to the documents filed by prosecutors, while in power Portillo embezzled tens of millions of dollars worth of public funds, a substantial portion of which he laun-dered through American and European bank accounts.
If convicted of the money laundering conspiracy count with which he is charged, Porti-llo, 58, faces a maximum term of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of the greater of $500,000, or twice the value of the monetary instruments or funds involved in the money laundering transactions.
Autoridades arrestan a ex- presidente de Guatemala

CD. DE GUATEMALA – La policía capturó al ex presidente Alfonso Portillo en el norte del país el 26 de enero, un día después de que el gobierno estadounidense lo acusara formalmente de lavar dinero robado de donativos que deberían ser destinados a la compra de libros para niños.
Portillo fue detenido en un rancho de la provincia de Izabal. Él fue presidente del país centroamericano del 14 de enero de 2000 al 14 de enero de 2004.
De acuerdo a los documentos emitidos por el Departamento de Justicia estadouniden-se, durante su presidencia Portillo desfalcó decenas de millones de dólares de fondos públicos y una considerable parte de esos fondos los lavó mediante cuentas bancarias en Estados Unidos y Europa.
De ser encontrado culpable del cargo de conspiración para lavado de dinero, Portillo, de 58 años, enfrenta una pena máxima de 500 mil dólares o el doble del valor de los instrumentos monetarios o fondos involucrados en las transacciones de lavado de dinero, cualquiera que sea mayor. También enfrenta hasta 20 años en prisión.
Choferes de camiones comerciales no podrán enviar mensajes de texto

WASHINGTON – El gobierno federal anunció que los choferes de vehículos comer-ciales tienen prohibido enviar o leer mensajes de texto mientras manejan.
Esta prohibición entró en efecto el 26 de enero y especifica que los choferes de auto-buses, tráiler y camiones comerciales que envíen mensajes de texto mientras manejan pueden estar sujetos a multas civiles o criminales de hasta 2 mil 750 dólares.
De acuerdo a investigaciones realizadas por la Administración Federal para la Segu-ridad de los Transportistas, los automovilistas que envían y reciben mensajes de texto quitan la mirada del camino por 4.6 segundos de cada 6 segundos mientras realizan esta actividad. Si el vehículo va a 55 millas por hora, esto significa que el chofer maneja de un extremo a otro de un campo de futbol sin fijarse.

The prohibition became effective Jan. 26.Truck and bus drivers who text while driving commercial vehicles may be subject to
civil or criminal penalties of up to $2,750.According to research by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, drivers
who send and receive text messages take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds out of every 6 seconds while texting. At 55 miles per hour, this means that the driver is traveling the length of a football field, including the end zones, without looking at the road.

Permanecerán arraigados Los Cadetes de Linares

Guadalupe Tijerina y los demás integrantes del grupo musical Los Cadetes de Linares continuarán arraigados por otros 40 días, informó la Procuraduría General de la República.
Los músicos se encuentran arraigados mientras las autoridades investigan sus presuntos nexos con el cartel de los Beltrán Leyva.
A mediados de enero Lupe Tijerina, de 70 años, fue hospitalizado de emergencia por complicaciones relacionadas con la diabetes. En ese momento sus abogados solicitaron a las autoridades que se le levantara el arraigo debido a sus condiciones de salud, pero esta fue negada.
La PGR decidió ampliar la medida cautelar el 26 de enero para determinar la probable responsabilidad en la comisión de los delitos de delincuencia organizada, contra la salud, operaciones con recursos de procedencia ilícita y lo que resulte por parte de los músicos de Los Cadetes de Linares y de Torrente.
Ellos fueron detenidos el 11 de diciembre en Tepoztlán, Morelos, cuando amenizaban una fiesta organizada presuntamente por integrantes del cartel de los Beltrán Leyva. Junto a ellos fue detenido Ramón Ayala, integrante de los Bravos del Norte, quien fue liberado el 23 de diciembre.
Los Cadetes de Linares will remain in police custody

MEXICO – Guadalupe Tijerina and Los Cadetes de Linares will remain under police custody for another 40 days, according to the Attorney General’s Office in Mexico.
The musicians have been under police custody since early December while authorities investigate their alleged links to the Beltran Leyva drug cartel.
In mid-January Lupe Tijerina, 70, was taken to a hospital for diabetic complications. At that time his lawyers requested authorities to set him free given his health issues, but the request was denied.
The Attorney General’s office decided Jan. 26 that the musicians must remain another 40 days under police custody while they determine if they are involved in organized crime activities, crimes against health, operations with illicit money and other crimes. All nine who remain under custody are members of Los Cadetes de Linares and Torrente.

Rivera said that while the couple hadn’t discussed marriage before, now she is happy and ecstatic with his unexpected proposal, but a wedding date hasn’t been set up yet.
What Rivera knows for sure is that she wants to have another child. “We want a child. I’d like to have a boy and for him to have Esteban’s sports talent, my legs and for him to be surrounded by love,” Rivera said.
She described herself as a very fortunate woman. “I’m a mother, I’m a grandmother, people love me and I have a wonderful career. What else can I ask for?”
