A group of foreignnationals appeared inthe Cape Town Magistrate’s Court onMonday following a bust of over R3

million worth of abalone, equipment andcash.The suspects were arrested on Friday in

WaboomStreet, Rouxville inKuils River. In-side the house blue buckets, black crates,

plastic bags, pots and cartons filledwith aba-lone were discovered.A large part of the road was cordoned off

at about 15:00 by members of the Hawks du-ring the joint operation involving severalpolice units. Police spokesperson BrigadierHangwaniMulaudzi, said Hawks operativesreceived information of an abalone dryingfacility at a house in Kuils River.“In response, members immediately

pounced on the premises and upon sear-

ching it, they found wet and dry abalone tothe value R3.2 million and equipment to thevalue of R50 000, as well as R23 000 in cash.”Mulaudzi said threeChinese and twoZim-

babwean nationals were arrested.“Investigations are ongoing to determine

the involvement in the illegal abalone poa-ching business and their status in the coun-try,” Mulaudzi said.News of the bust and confiscation of the

marine resource was shared on the Face-

book pages of a local neighbourhood watch.One resident commented that the police alsomanaged to confiscate AK-47 rifles.Several others from the quiet residential

area expressed their shockanddisgust at theillegal abalone operation.One resident mentioned she lives a mere

four houses away from the house where thebust occurred. “Scary, glad they arecaught,” she wrote.

about what happens in their area.“If or when you notice something suspici-

ous, report it to the police,” Davids said.Lionel Adendorf, spokesperson for the de-

partment of agriculture, forestry and fishe-ries, said the department’s monitoring andsurveillance team, along with officials fromcrime intelligence, conducted surveillanceon the residence suspectedof beingan illegalabalone drying facility.

“The residence was entered and sear-ched,” he said.The authorities found 758,60 kilograms of

dried abalone and 551,60 kilos wet abalone.The abalonewas countedyesterday,Aden-

dorf said.Adendorf said the department regards

abalone as a very important marine resour-ce.

“Protecting the abalone resources fallswithin the framework of the Integrated Fis-heries Security Strategy which includes theprotection of the resource throughproactiveand reactive patrols at sea, on land, and anti-poaching operations,” Adendorf said.Officials of the department will also parti-

cipate in the judicial processes that will fol-low.

The Hawks arrested five suspects in connection with the illegal possession of abalone in KuilsRiver on Friday. The suspects appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Kuils River resident and designerMa-ria Uys’s “wearable art” was a hugehit at the recent Cape Town Design

Indaba, with some of her work bought upby international visitors.Maria, who completed her studies in

surface design last year, was one of manylocal designers who was afforded the op-portunity to display their work at the De-sign Indaba.Maria is inspired by the culture and

brightly coloured geometric designs of theNdebele people and this is reflected in herwearable art pieces.Despite not having a clear category for

her Ndebele designs, Maria says her de-signs are open to interpretation.“It is wearable art. You can hang it in

your house or wear it for a special occa-sion,” says Maria, whose label is calledAfrigarde.She said being part of theDesign Indaba

Expo 2015 held from 27 February untilMonday at the CTICC, was an experience.Her designs, which were part of her fi-

nal year B.Tech, were displayed to thepublic for the first time at the indaba.“It has been great and insane.“The people are interested in it. Some

people from overseas bought a few items.Designers from New York, Kenya, Franceand Germany,” Maria added.She plans to travel to some of these

countries to observe how they use andhow they sell it.“This is all insane. I do not know how

I ended up here,” she explained whenasked about her first Indaba Expo experi-ence.“This is good exposure. It is a great way

to network and build contacts,” Mariaadded.Maria currently works from home in

Kuils River and delivers her orders.“This (the Indaba) is all new. I did not

expect it,” she said.She sold nearly all her stock.

Apart from travelling this year to exhib-it some of her designs elsewhere, she is al-so preparing herself for the annual OpenDesign Festival at the Cape Town CityHall which takes place in August.“I have a lot of new ideas that I want to

play with,” Maria said.Garreth Bloor, mayco member for tour-

ism, events and economic development,said in a statement issued by the City ofCape Town that the benefit of the DesignIndaba is two-fold: firstly to provide up-and-coming designers with exposure tothe international design community, andsecondly, to reaffirm Cape Town’s statusas the events capital of Africa.“The event is an excellent launch pad

for emerging design entrepreneurs asthey are exposed to local and internation-al buyers.“The expo promotes design, innovation

and the development of designers, and isthe ideal platform for our local creativeminds to showcase their talent,” Bloorsaid.

Blind man given help to ‘see’Leon Vincent Poole (52) from Athlone

Thanks to VisionTrust, a public benefittrust and blind adventurer and motivatio-nal speaker HeinWagner, Leon recently re-ceived a high-tech reading aid – known asthe Eye-Pal Solo –which enables him to livelife normally.Kuils River resident and founder of Visi-

onTrust, Hein aims to provide people withdisabilities with a variety of adaptive andassistive technologies, allowing them tooperate independently in the open labourmarket.Leon lost his sight at the age of 40, which

was a major life adjustment. He was facedwith many new challenges.“When I was presented with the reading

aid, it was a very emotionalmoment forme.I did not have any support structure whenI lost my sight, which of course led to morechallenges, such as lack of job opportuni-ties,” Leon said.Leon holds a BA Honours degree in Edu-

cation and was employed as an educator atDagbreek Primary and Woodland Primarybefore he lost his sight.He is currently unemployed but still con-

tinues to do what he is passionate about– motivating school children with special

needs. He is also busy with hisMaster’s degree in Education.“Motivating children with

disabilities is very important.It allowsme to encourage themand give them support. I ampassionate about educationand am a sports fanatic.“I used to be heavily invol-

ved in soccer coaching clinicsand physical fitness program-mes. It was a very difficult timefor my family when I lost mysight because they had to assistand guide me with everything.I am thankful to Hein becausehis help will make a huge diffe-rence in my life,” Leon added.Hein, an adventurer who has

takenpart inmanychallengingexpeditions, including a mara-thon in Antartica, said: “I wasdeeply moved by Leon’s deter-mination to continue his stu-dies despite his late onset ofblindness.“The Eye-Pal Solo will be of

enormoushelp to himashe cannow read his printed study materials byhimself and no longer has to rely on sightedhelp to do this for him.

A total of 344 suspects were arrested thispast week during a series of operations con-ducted in the Kuils River police cluster.According toWarrant Officer Annacletta

Mothoalo, police spokesperson, 232 sus-pects were arrested for serious crimes suchas murder, house robbery and pointing ofa firearm. The remainder, 112, were arre-sted for less serious crimes which include

disturbing the peace, riotous behaviourandbuying alcohol froman illegal premisesor being drunk in public.She said the arrests were made during

disruptive operations executed betweenMonday and Sunday.The police also searched several houses

for drugs and illegal alcohol sales.Mothoalo said different types of drugs in-

cluding tik, dagga and mandrax tablets we-re confiscated from drug outlets and direc-tly from suspects.The drugs are valued at R800 000.“Dangerousweapons suchasknives, oka-

pis and stainless steel knives were also con-fiscated from suspects.”Mothoalo said two illegal firearms were

also confiscated.

The Wesbank Multi Purpose Centre cameout tops this year at the Area Games heldin Kleinvlei recently.

The event is hosted each year by the Cityof Cape Town’s sports and recreation direc-torate.

Wesbank came up against the sports andrecreation facility teams from Macassar,Eerste River and Kleinvlei.

Glen Goldman, district recreation officer,said a variety of games are normally playedduring the year at the various sport and re-creation facilities run by the municipality.

“The games that are played by the youthinclude four-a-side soccer, dominoes, chess,draughts, morabaraba, three-sticks and net-ball.

“Qualifying for the competition took placeat the halls during the December and Janua-ry school holidays,” Glen said.

On Saturday 21 February teams got toge-ther to take part in the Area Games to deter-mine who will qualify and go through to thenext round – the District Games. This eventtakes place on Saturday, 21 March at theSwartklip Sports Complex, Glen said.

“Besides winning the games, officials alsomonitor the behaviour of the participantsand take into account fair play and sports-manship.

“This year it was Wesbank who took homethe trophy as the winning area,” Glen saidproudly.

The winners at the District Games will begoing through to the Cape Town Gameswhich will be held on 27 April also at theSwartklip Sports Complex.

Perdekarre in Kuilsrivier wat rommelby huise kollekteer net om dit doodlui-ters weer elders in die buurt te stort,

maak inwoners warm onder die krag.“Hulle laai vullis teen ’n bekostigbare

prys by huise op,maar stort dit op die naasteoop stuk veld,”meen Jacob Jacobs, raadslid.Hy sê perdekarre is al ’n ou verskynsel in

die gebied se strate.“Ekwil ’n beroep doen op die inwoners om

nie van die perdekarre se dienste gebruik temaaknie, veralwanneerdit kombyrommel-verwydering. Boomtakke, blare en grasword meestal gelaai.“Hulle laai dit op en gooi dit net verder in

die pad af weg. Daarna moet ons (die raad)die gemors opruim,” vertel Jacobs.Ben Small, voorsitter van die Amandel

and Surrounds Crime Watch, het verledeweek ’n soortgelyke beroep op inwoners ge-doen.’n Stukkende toilet is al langs ’n straat in

penne by onvoltooide huise steel,” sê hy.Een perdekar-ryer is al by ’n huis semuur

rommel stort is welkom om die registrasie-nommer vandie kar aandie vereniging deurte gee. Die vereniging sal die eienaarmet be-hulp van die nommer opspoor en die inlig-ting dan aan die wetstoepassingsafdelingdeurgee,” verduidelik White.Sy sê daar is al in die verlede gereeld klag-

tes oor onwettige storting by haar kantooraangemeld. “Gewoonlik deur die raadslid ofbuurtwag-organisasies,” sê sy.“Daar is ongelukkig niks wat ons as die

vereniging daaraan kan doen nie. Dis diewetstoepassingsdepartement se verant-woordelikheid.”Die vereniging konsentreer net op diewel-

syn van die perd.’n Soortgelyke probleem is nog tot onlangs

in Pinelands ervaar.“Dis deur die inwoners self stopgesit. Hul-

It might surprise corporate decision-makers to find the leafy suburbs havepeople who are battling to make endsmeet in this depressed economy. Andmany who plead poverty while living intownships have far more disposableincome than is declared.

Goldy aims for gold

Goldy Fuchs from Brackenfell is part of the South African paracycling team that will competeat the UCI Italian World Cup.

After sustaining serious head injuriesas a five-month-old baby in a car acci-dent, Goldy Fuchs survived as an as-

ymmetrical quadriplegic, but is taking theworld by storm as a record breaking cyclist.

The 23-year-old Brackenfell resident star-ted cycling at the age of 12 and representedWestern Province on numerous occasions,settingnational records at theNedbanknati-onal championships.

Healso representedhis province for swim-ming and athletics.

During the Pennypinchers South AfricanRoad, Time Trial and Para-cycling Champi-onships held in Nelspruit last month, Goldywongold and silver in the road race and timetrial respectively.

Champion“In 2010, when I was still a junior cyclist,

I decided to participate in the Senior T2 cate-gory and won the time trial and road racenational championships. Since then, I havecompeted internationally in six para-cy-clingWorldCup events and twoworld cham-pionships.

“I am currently ranked ninth in the worldon the 2014 UCI para-cycling T2 world ran-kings,” said Goldy.

Goldy is the current SouthAfricanT2 roadcycling champion too. “I won it convincin-gly with 2 minutes 10 seconds, in Nelspruitduring lastmonth for the third year in a row.

Tiptop shapeGoldy is aiming high. “I came second in

the time trial at the 2012 SA National Cham-pionship in Durban, and was therefore notincluded in the final team. I have now setmygoals on competing in the 2016 Rio Paralym-pics, andwillwork extremely hard to realisethis dream of mine.”

Goldy currently receives fitness coachingat the Sport Science Institute of SouthAfrica(SSISA) in Newlands, ensuring he is in tip-top physical shape.

Another highlight for Goldy when he wasinvited by the Laureus Sport for Good Foun-dation to be part of theVodacompeloton par-ticipating in the 2011 Argus Cycle Tour withother well-known sport stars such as Mornedu Plessis, Daley Thompson and Miguel In-durain.

For now, the focus is on the UCI ItalianWorld Cup in Maniago, Italy from 5-7 Juneas part of the SA para-cycling team..
