“It is with disappointment thatAfriForum learnt of the decision bytheDepartmentofEnvironmentalAf-fairs (DEA) to grant a temporaryauthorisation for Sappi to supply ashto affiliates of the Umkomaas BlockMakers Association in November2014. The mandate of the DEA is to

Sewage streams into riverTANNIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

A CONCERNED Amanzimtoti resi-dent has reported to eThekwini onseveral occasions regarding sewagestreaming into theriveralongside thebridge on Riverside Road.

Hesayswhilethemunicipalityhadcorrectedtheproblemafterhereport-ed it, the correctionwas only a short-term solution.

“The problem occurs when pumpstation three trips.

“When this happens the sewageflows out of the manholes next to the

road.“eThekwini explained the reason

forthetrippingisthatthereissomuchclothing and plastic and other thingsfloating in the river. I drive to workthrough there every day and the sew-age streams over two to three times aweek,” he says.

If the trippingoccursatnight, sew-age can stream into the river for 12 to14 hours before it is stopped. Whenthe river breaks this sewage pollutesthe lagoons and the sea.

eThekwini Municipality was un-available for comment at the time ofgoing to press.

Tipper trucks unfairlycharged for overloading>> ‘I am a lawabiding citizen who complies withregulations. I do not intentionally overload my trucks’TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

AMANZIMTOTI businessman IsshwarSingh says he is tired of defending hiscase in court regarding his tipper

trucks being charged for overloading due totechnicalities and is considering takingcounter legal action.

Singh says the problem arises when thesame volume of sand (ash, river sand, stones, blocks and bricks) is being loaded. It has a variable content influencing itsweight.

For example if pit sand is picked up a dayafter it has rained on a eightton truck withsix cubic metres, the sand is heavier, but thevolume required by his client is 6m3.

If he loads less the load will be short onceit dries. River sand is worse because it isdredged out of the water and loadedstraight onto trucks and at this stage it willweigh more.

Another problem is that the sand can

contain big rocks, causing a variable in theweight. Singh says his drivers are also oftenapproached for bribes and they know he hasa strict policy against paying bribes.

“I am a lawabiding citizen who complieswith regulations. I do not intentionally overload my trucks. In fact at a great expenseto my business, I have undertaken to avoidtransgressions and will continue to do so.

“To fine a trucker without consideringthe variables being considered is unjust andunfair. I implore the court to take up the matter with the relevant traffic enforcers witha view to alleviating this situation or reachsome kind of compromise or solution,” Singhsaid in an appeal to the court last Wednesday.

Singh suggested a loss of time being diverted to the weigh bridge, the wait periodto be attended to and the adjustment of theload or the removal of the excess materialis punishment enough.

“The fine could be utilised to make thevehicle more roadworthy and consequently

our roads safer,” he suggests. On Wednesday, the court significantly

reduced the fine charged, but Singh says amore permanent solution is needed.

PHOTO: SUPPLIEDIsshwar Singh says trucks are unfairly charged for overloading without taking into account variables.

She decided to travel to South Africa in2001 to write a paper about childheadedhouseholds. The Aids epidemic, ongoing civilunrest, and grinding poverty had torn families apart and many children were left raisingtheirsiblingsandcousinsalone.Thisbroughther to Mother of Peace in Illovo.

“I came to Mother of the Peace to meetmy friend Elizabeth Towell who was livingand working in the community. I fell in love

with the children and the people who givethem such good care. After a brief tour anda dozen smiling faces I knew I would be back.On top of that Liz was dying and I wantedto return to take care of her.

“She died four months thereafter and Ireturned to Mother of Peace five monthslater. I have come back every year since andplan to do the same as long as I am able.”

Weekes says she returns to Peace because it is the happiest place she has everbeen to.

“Thechildrenarehappybecausetheylivewith their ‘families’ of six, each headed bya supportive and caring ‘mother’. I introducemy friends to Mother of Peace because it isa community of promise.”

Automatic parentalcontrol on TVmaddeningWHY is it that most of the movies and excellent series on DStv (albeit old ones), for instance Sopranos, have parental control automatically on when itcomes to swearing.

I am a big girl and get ticked off when conversations are littered with “bleep” every time someoneopens their mouth, on top of which there is a big“dot” over their mouth so you can’t actually lip readthe language. How stupid.

Fever diary Former Kingswayhead boy inspires>> ‘Some people don’t know what hard work is’

TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

KINGSWAY High’s 2012 head boy, nowa motivational speaker, LiyandaNzimande addressed pupils last

week and talked about desire, fear anddreams.

“A wise man once told me ‘Life can beas simple or as complicated as you makeit. Do what you know is right. Avoid doingwhat you know is wrong and do whateverit is that you do to the best of your ability’.”

He said that some people don’t knowwhat hard work is.

“Youwanttoachievethosedistinctionsbut you are not prepared to put in the hardwork to achieve them. You are not willingto burn the midnight oil.”

Nzimande told of how he worked towards becoming head prefect in matricand the representative council of learnerschairman and achieving his goals by reminding himself of his goals and dreamsand believing it was possible, but by

achieving so much a downfall ensued. In his first year of university in Johan

nesburg his social life started taking over.He became infatuated with become a public figure. He however passed his first yearand his modules’ second year soon approached. Thinking he could continue thesame life he lived in first year he failed vitalmodules that led him to be excluded fromthe faculty of B.Com. Stressed and depressed he didn’t know what to do.

“I was faced with an ultimatum. At thatpoint in my life it became evident to methat the only guarantee in life is death andthe only constant is change.

“Standing at a cross road and you don’tknow which way to turn this is when youhave to trust in your gut feeling, a God ora super natural power. You have to believethat the dots in the future will connect before you even get to the future,” he says.

He warned pupils not to spend so muchtime with other people that they forgetwho they are.

“I dare you to spend some time alone.

I dare you to read a book. I dare you to studyyourself, to reinvent yourself and try betteryourself.

Nzimande has since enrolled to studymarketing and plans to open his own business this year.

— Ver-skaf.

THE new Range Rover Evoque, sporting anew design and a host of the automaker’slatest technologies, will make its debut atthe 2015 Geneva auto show.

Land Rover SA says it could be in SouthAfrica by August 2015.

Land Rover design director and chiefcreative officer Gerry McGovern said: “TheRange Rover Evoque first established andthen dominated the luxury compact SUVsector generating worldwide acclaim andsales success. Our challenge has been toevolve the Evoque design without dilutingits distinctive character.”

The new Evoque’s trim levels have beenrealigned to match those of the RangeRover Sport — SE, HSE Dynamic and Autobiography, and a suite of option packs.

The new Evoque gains enlarged air intakes, new grille designs and is will be the

first Range Rover to be offered with adaptive LED headlights. The Evoque’s standardgrille is distinguished by two bold horizontal bars and a new finemesh pattern.

In South Africa, the new SUV will bepowered with a 2.2litre SD4 turbo dieselengine (paired with a ninespeed auto)and Land Rover’s 2.0litre Si4 turbo petrol.

With 177kW on tap, the Si4 petrol engine delivers strong performance, with acceleration from 0100km/h in just 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 217km/h. Fueleconomy is rated at 7.8 litres/100km and181g/km emissions.

Interior changes include new seats anddoor casings, 20cm touchscreen infotainment unit and the introduction of new colours and materials. Its handsfree powertailgate allows owners to automaticallyopen and close the boot by waving a foot

beneath the rear bumper. It’s equipped with Land Rover’s innova

tive AllTerrain Progress Control (ATPC),only available on Si4 derivatives, first seenon the Range Rover and Range RoverSport. The technology maintains a predetermined speed (selected using the cruisecontrol function) in forward or reversegears between 1.8km/h to 30km/h, allowing the driver to concentrate on negotiating tricky terrain.

Its autonomous emergency brakingprevents or greatly reduces the severity ofcrashes in the event of the driver failing totake preventative action. Using an advanced forwardfacing stereo digital camera, the system can identify potential hazards ahead.

Prices will be will be announced closerto the launch. — Wheels24.
