SEVERAL thousand pupilsthroughout South Africa can nowhappily ride their very own bikesto school thanks to the Bicycle Ed-ucation Empowerment Pro-gramme(BEEP), implemented byWorld Vision South Africa andSwitzerland.BEEP’s 2015 programme waslaunched at Masingizela Second-ary School in Umvoti at the begin-ningofFebruary,when60delight-ed students received bicycles. The programme has been namedQhubeka, which is Nguni for “tocarry on”, “to progress”, “to moveforward”.
At Mashingizela SecondarySchool, students walk as far as8kmonewayaday to attend class-es. This means they have to leavehome at 5.30am to be at school at7.30am. Riding a bicycle to schoolcuts this time down to 45 minutesone way.
“The launch of BEEP 2015 atMashingizela Secondary Schooltruly signifies the very spirit of thecampaign - to reach themost ruralof communities to enable thesechildren to attend school on timeand so improve their overall edu-cational outcomes,” said PaulaBarnard, national director ofWorld Vision SA.
“The principal, teachers andstudents from Mashingizela Sec-ondary School received us withwarm, open arms. It was amemo-rable day and a fitting start to anexciting campaign. Each bicyclewe hand over takes us one stepcloser to improvingthequalityandaccessibility of education in SouthAfrica.”
Also taking part in the launch atMashingizela were representa-tives of World Vision, the Depart-ment of Education and Qhubeka.TheBEEP2015 launchalsoplayed
host to cyclists of Team MTN-Qhubeka powered by Samsung, who will be riding the Tour deFrance 2015. The cyclists wereJay Thomson, Louis Meintjies,Reinhardt Janse Van Rensburgand WCC Africa team athlete,Nicholas Dlamini.
Last year, 6000 bicycles werehanded over to students in 58schools in four provinces in thelaunch of the first campaign. Theprogramme aims to tackle SouthAfrica’s school attendance chal-lenge head-on by improving chil-dren’s access to educationthrough increased mobility.
This year, 6000 bicycles will bedistributed to students fromKwaZulu-Natal. Ten recipientschools in KZN have been identi-fied and each will receive 60 bicy-cles. The KZN bicycle handoversalso incorporate donations fromVolkswagen South Africa, 50 MileRide in the USA and individualQhubeka donors.
The bicycles are sturdy, highquality Buffalo Bicycles providedbyQhubeka. Sparepartsareorigi-nal Buffalo Bicycle parts to ensurethebicyclesaremaintained- threemechanics are trained to serviceand maintain the bicycles as partof an economic development pro-gramme in these communities.
A Bicycle Supervisory Commit-tee at each recipient school ismade up of teachers, student gov-erning body members and par-ents. The committee’s role is to se-lect beneficiaries and to enforcethe two-year service-to-own con-tract which governs the use of thebicycle.

Tensions remain high inMuden as the pro-testors claim no one listens to them andGovernment does not assist with the lackof service delivery . This protest is now inits third week –the community claim thatthey haveno choice but to take such action.
In the photograph showing a Police vanfarmers claim that Police personnel werestanding by watching as the protestors re-dug a trench. However Police spokesman,Colonel Jay Naicker denied this and insist-ed that the Police were guarding the work-ers who were repairing the road. LastThursday with the intervention of the Po-lice, earth movers removed the rocks andrubble littering sections of the Greytown/Muden road and filled in the trenches. However during the night , and the earlyhours of theFriday, the trencheswere onceagain dug. The depth of these trenches canbe seen in the second photo.
The road blockade has not only affectedthe daily life of the community but also hashad a more far reaching impact onn thecountry’s economy as heavy trucks havebeen unable to use the road or have hadto have the expense of obtaining permitsetc for alternate routes. A prime exampleof this was last week when heavy vehiclescarrying large components to the Kusilepower project were unable to proceed be-cause of the damage to the road. A truckdelivering furniture , which was caught upin the blockade, had it tyres slashed, and
items removed.Umvoti past Mayor PG Mavundla, who
lives in Muden, expresses the views of thecommunity ina letterwritten to theMagis-traterequestinghimto takerupthematterwith the relevant authority before “we takethe law into our hands, aswe can no longerstomachwhat is being fed to us andwe arenow sick and tired of this unbecoming be-haviour. Mr Mavundla emphasises theproblemsofchildrengetting toschool ,peo-ple getting to their place of work;farmersselling produce etc off the farms and thegeneral increase in cost to all who areforced to travel the long way round.
Mr Mavundla states”There is a lot of in-timidation down in the valley, the policecannot help as they are locked in them-selves, we cannot receive any medicalhelp,.
We propose that if the police cannot dealwith the situation an army should be callto dealwith the situation and protect us.Hepoints out that .
beside the people of Muden, the R73serves as a strategic road to transport allabnormal loads to theVaal andout of SouthAfrica, with the road being closed all heavytransport are now having to stand still oruse roads that arenot designed for the pur-pose. If theabove situation is not solved ,westand to lose business as a country asmorecompanieswillprefertoreceivetheirgoodsin other ports such as Maputo instead of
Durban or Richards Bay.’A spokesperson for the Department of
Transport appealed to the protestors tostop damaging the infrastructure whichcaused more service delivery delays atenormous cost. A COGTA spokespersonsaid that damaging the roadswas not “howthings worked” to obtain service deliveryfor the community.
