In-House Case Study: McMaster UniversityMcMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, is one of the top 100universities in the world. The “McMaster Model”—a student-centred,problem-based, and interdisciplinary approach to learning—has beenadopted by universities around the world. McMaster University supportsthe educational goals of more than 19,000 full-time undergraduate and2,700 graduate students each year.

First Aid Training IssuesIn the past, each department at McMaster University sent its staff for off-campus training with various first aid training companies. This would becoordinated on an ad-hoc basis by each department, which incurredadditional expenses for travel time, lunch, and other items.WhileMcMaster has an Emergency Medical System (a hospital on campus)and a Student Emergency Response Team, all departments are requiredto ensure employees are trained to meet Workplace Safety andInsurance Board (WSIB) guidelines.

SolutionWith the support of the Red Cross, McMaster’s Department ofRecreation took over the management of training, offering this service toall other university departments. McMaster’s Department of Recreationbecame a training partner with the Red Cross, which allowed it topurchase quality Red Cross training materials and use certified RedCross First Aid Instructors to facilitate courses.

Immediate ResultsMcMaster’s ability to introduce its own emergency protocols into trainingensured that staff knew their own unique emergency procedures (e.g.,staff call security instead of 9-1-1 to direct an emergency call). Therehave also been several other benefits to this approach:

Reduction of costs: The cost of training has been reduced andemployees have the convenience of staying on campus for training.Quality course materials are available at competitive prices.

Employment and development opportunities for campusstudents: Students with Red Cross First Aid Instructor certification canwork on campus for the Department of Recreation.

Better records: With this in-house approach, McMaster’s humanresources department now has better records, as staff training recordsare shared with human resources and added to employee files.

Control over scheduling: McMaster can run its courses during non-academic times of the year, when more staff and facilities are available.Other department staff can plan in advance for staff training in earlysummer. McMaster is also able to react quickly and set up training if anemerging need arises.
