TORNADOS

Our Questions1.How does a tornado

form?2. What causes a tornado?

3.How strong can a tornado be?

Our Hypothesis

1. We think a tornado forms by a lot of wind.2. Jadeline and Rubby think that a tornado is

caused by hot and cold wind mixed together.3. We think that a tornado can go up to 180-200

miles per hour.

Planning a Experiment

• food coloring• sand • water• measuring cup• Tape

•2 soda bottles

Instructions

1.Get 2 empty soda bottles.2.Fill it up 2/3 of water in 1 bottle.3.Put food coloring and some sand in the soda

bottle .4.Carefully tape the empty bottle from top to top to

the bottle full of water.5. Shake the bottles in circular movements and turn

it around to the other side.6.Finally you’ll have a TORNADO!!!

RESULTS Tornados can occur at any time of the year. In the South tornados peak in March -May in the North during summer. Tornados might occur between hours such as 3 and 9pm,but can also occur at all hours.

Tornados can most likely occur in spring and least likely in the winter. So since autumn and spring have times to be warm and cool there are more opportunities of cooler air mixing with warmer air.

While 90% of tornados occur in the United States made by dry cool air from the Gulf of Mexico, tornados most likely go around the world. About 800-1,200 tornados occur in the United States each year even though most tornados occur in inhabited places.

Tornados make a circular column of low pressure, up to almost 100 milliards lower than the surrounding air, that has very fast wind circling around it at speed level of 200 to 500 miles per hour. The 450-1,800 foot wide columns can break in through wood and into medal as they make their way of destruction.

Tornados are also known as twisters, most likely moving at a speed of about 15 to 30 miles per hour.
